[Q] Rooting troubles - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've rooted my Droid X numerous times, but I'm having trouble rooting my Evo 4G. I had it rooted once, then an air-push update did it before I could stop it.
S-OFF
HBOOT- 6.16.1002
Radio 2.15.00.05.02
Android 2.3.3
Baseband 2.15.00.05.02
Software 4.24.651.1
It still has S-Off, but I'm not sure what I can do without risking somewhat permanent damage, seeing as how I don't know much about rooting this particular phone. The one thing that confused me was the Hboot version, I couldn't find a guide or anything for it anywhere.
Anyways, I was wondering how I would go about rooting the phone again, and if possible flashing a rom I found with is basically an enhanced version of the already installed OS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153 Just for reference
Pardon my ignorance if this has been asked before, and thank you in advance for any and all help!

I think if you're still s-off you just need to flash a custom recovery again
We're comin from a pure power source.

Yup your s-off so just flash a custom recovery and then to gain root flash via recovery superuser and superuser binaries. You can find those at androidsu.com in superuser. Make sure you download the one for gingerbread

as for the hboot version, dont worry... that what it gets changes to when you root with revolutionary.

Bought An Evo that was rooted already but don't know which one? Please help

I bought an Evo from Cragslist and Installed on it was the android-wifi-tether. I neaver asked the seller what root he had put on the Evo is there any way to check? I wanted to but the new update on Evo not really sure what to do I don't really use/abuse the teathering thing it is nice to know you can do it though.
Settings-About Phone-Software. It should be listed in the version number. If the bootup is the typical Spring 4G splash, then it's probably just stock with wifi tether.
If you ever want to keep root or unroot in the future, do not install the OTA update. You'll lose the ability to root.
You can install just about any ROM you want, read around the forums for information on each one and how to install them. You may also want to read the "how to root" threads to see how it was done, as it's very instructional.

Thanks for your help its sounds like I may want anthor rom idk the battery life and SD cards are major issues for me and i'm hoping that with a diffrent rom they would be able to fix them. I read that formating the SD card might fix the sd card bug but i'm afraid i'lll lose my root do you know if thats the case? Thanks
Formatting the SD card will not make you lose root. Although, it sounds like you may want to try flashing another Rom or even trying to redo toasts rooting guide

If all else fails just re-root. That way to can make sure of the root type
Simple Root
Thanks for your reply I'll try re-formatting the SD card tonight i'm kind of scared to put anther rom on the phone it seems so complicated....
But since I bought the phone used I really have no idea whats on this thing since I didn't ask the seller the right questions when i bought it
I have never used Craigslist before, but you can't email him just to ask? Worst case is he doesn't reply to your email.
good call I wrote the person I bought it from I didn't even think to search email and send him a message thanks for the advise!!
when i follow these steps i get the option to see versions of many diff things. android version, baseband version, kernel version, pri version, prl version... which one tells me the root? i also bought a rooted evo off someone and need to update gingerbread and beed this info i am told

If you're rooted and s-off, all you need to do is download the stock rooted rom (or if you'd like, a custom rom with updated software) and flash it through recovery. If you don't know how to flash roms, there are guides available here and on other sites.
You don't really need to know how it was rooted unless you are wanting to unroot. If you boot into hboot, then your hboot version will most likely tell how it was rooted. If it's 6.16, then it was rooted with revolutionary. If it's 2.10 or below, it was most likely rooted with unrevoked... but it could've been rooted with Toast's method or something else. If it's still on 2.2, then most likely unrevoked was used unless someone rooted with revolutionary and then flashed a 2.2 rom, but that's unlikely.
If you don't want it to be rooted, find out which root method was used and unroot with the proper method. You can RUU to the latest firmware during the unroot process.

All you need to do is research flashing roms. Once you understand that, go to the Evo 4G Development forum and find the stock rooted rom (grab the odexed version unless you plan to theme or modify it). Backup your apps and data with Titanium Backup and texts with SMS Backup & Restore if you'd like. Boot into recovery, nandroid backup, then wipe and flash as directed in one of the many guides.
If you have ClockworkMod recovery, I suggest switching to Amon Ra. Download the PC36IMG for AR and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders), then boot into hboot. The phone will scan for the file and ask you to update, hit volume up for yes.
You can get a properly named version of Amon Ra from here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
But before doing anything, read as much as you can. Good luck!

First you need to read.
Read these threads first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20201201
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865204
Once you've read those threads and searched for anything else you don't understand, then ask questions. You have to help yourself a bit.
No offense, it's just that your questions have already been answered. If you're not willing to do some reading, then I'm not willing to do some unneeded writing.

I had spent an entire day reading these forums and I finally found a vid on YouTube that showed me how to do it

[Q] I'm on CM7 2.3.4 with S-ON, do I need S-OFF?

Hey guys I've been doing a little reading about this whole S-OFF thing but I flashed CM7 2.3.4 to my Wildfire with S-ON and it worked... From what I've read it seems this shouldn't have been possible but it worked so should I still use AlphaRev and flash S-OFF? Or did S-ON/OFF only start on android 2.3.4?
Thanks for the help
if you have hboot 0.08.000 , you can install custom roms without s-off
No, its not necessary to get S-OFF to be able to use Custom ROMs. (Obviously valid only for Older HBoot version only).
S-OFF is full / permanent root. What you are using is an exploit on a system, and, in a way, temporary root. But, again, it is working for all feasible purposes, so, you don't NEED S-OFF. (Whether you WANT it is another story)
Awesome thanks for the help guys

[Q] EVO 4G: Need to install stock Bootloader

Hello XDA,
I have been trying to unroot my phone, but have been running into a problem. I was able to restore my backup of the official Sprint ROM I took after using to Revolutionary tool. But I cannot figure out how to install a stock bootloader.
I tried using the files at; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801568 but when I load up the gootloader and press volume up to have it install the bootloader, it says "[1] Bootloader - bypassed" and asks me if I would like to restart.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My phones info;
HBOOT 6.16.1002
Radio 1.36.00.04.02
Security S-OFF
Android 2.3.3
Baseband 1.36.00.04.02
Kernel 2.6.35.10-gc0a661b
To the best of my knowledge it can't be unrooted yet.

According to this site, all hboot versions after 0.97 are not downgradeable, however, since you have the 'international' hboot version, I'm not sure if it applies, but I am 'assuming' it does.

[q] HBOOT .98 s-OFF???

I looked for hours and tried many different things...
My friend has the HTC Desire, CDMA version (cspire/cellsouth version, but i think its the same hardware as the US Cellular device) with h-boot .98
i was trying to gain s-OFF but all methods were either for .93 or 1.06 and i dont know how to get there. do i need to flash new firmware before i can do ROMs?
he is fully rooted, but only on android 2.1 and he wants gingerbread sense...
any help would be much appreciated!
PLEASE
Revolutionary.io supports the HBOOT 1.06 for cdma, but it should the 0.98 as well.
If not, flash the latest firmware, then do the revolutionary procedure .
or you can just use unrevoked, it roots and S-OFF's the CDMA Desire.

if you have rooted using alpharev, then you need to downgrade the hboot using hboot downgrader from alpharev.nl, then run the respective RUU.
I could use some help with a similar issue, too!
Had everything fine, S-OFF, rooted, Cm7
Mistakenly formated my /system in clockwork recovery
Now I have .98 HBOOT but w/ S-OFF
can install ROMS and boot CM7
I have superuser installed
but no root!
What can I do to gain root back?

sigh. yet another how to unroot and revert to stock question

Hi there, I'm just going to get to the point. I want to unroot and revert to stock, however, as I've researched, I'm just slightly confused. I know there's a million threads but I can't seem to find a straight answer.
What I have:
hboot .76
radio 2.15.00.05.02
PRI 2.15
I rooted using some kind of flash exploit when the evo was still newish (summer 2010).
I've looked into using revolutionary's unroot option, but i'm unsure if that's the best way. If it is, after I get S-on can I go ahead and flash the latest official rom and radio package via recovery? If not, what's my best option?
Thanks.
Since you have Hboot 0.76 and rooted with some kind of flash exploit method (It was either Toast Method or Simple Root, which is Toast Method inside a program), you just need to run any official HTC PC36IMG.zip file or RUU and your phone will be unrooted with S-ON. However, since you want the latest radio package, you should probably run the latest RUU or PC36IMG file from HTC.
that simple? Thats a relief then. Thanks
