Live wallpaper lag - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I experience quite much lag when using live wallpapers. I have tried many custom rome, launchers, kernels, overclocking, but nothing seems to help. Is my desire z just too weak for running live wallpapers smoothly? If someone can run lw smoothly, please tell me how did you do that. Oh yeah, the best results I have gotten with cyanogenmod 7.1.0 and hacked touchwiz launcher. Any help ??

May I know what Rom ur using? And do u use service app like Skype ,Im+ and vice versa?

Do the built-in HTC live wallpapers work okay? Sometimes 3rd party live wallpapers on the Market are really poorly optimized, and don't work great. I've never had an issue running live wallpapers (both HTC and 3rd party) on my DZ, including the stock ROM and Sense 3 ROMs. As the previous response stated, maybe you have an issue with background processes?

Well, I have this lag on EVERY rom i have used. I can notice that the ui runs slower, no matter what. And the lag is same on stock and market live walls.
Now I'm using mini and nexus live wallpaper.(the stock miui one) The ui runs slower than on static ones. AND i have about 170mb of free ram, so that should not be the problem either. Any help???

What are your clock speeds? Whenever mines over 1.3ghz its fine

Why are so much apps so laggy?

I was so happy when I upgraded from a T-Mobile g2, but now I'm thinking it wasn't worth it
Everything was smooth on the g2 even if it was single core at 0.8ghz
When I use apps the scrolling isn't smooth at all, everything's so laggy, especially go launcher which I was using on the g2 without any problems
Do you guys think a future update will fix this?

I think it is a problem with Go Launcher not being updated for ICS..

I would say that there isn't many apps updated for ics yet.....only a few and that's why they don't run smooth....but I would guess that as more and more phones get ics, more and more apps will be updated too......at least that's what I think and hope......

The built in live wallpapers aren't optimized for ICS except phase beam. Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of others weren't either. Also.. if you are using a live wallpaper not optimized for ICS.. well there's your problem.
I'd bet, like most, that it hinges on the optimizations for ICS.
Keep in mind, ICS was a HUGE update (maybe not coming from 3.x but y'know) and app-devs have a ways to go before they're using the newer configs on all their apps. It'd be entertaining to see GB ported back over to the GN to see how well it ran.

Sense is a bit laggy

I think Sense is a bit laggy in my HOX. Is it possible to install apex launcher and not root the Phone? Or Will Sense run in background?

yes apex doesnt need root, runs at flawless 60fps
reboot once apex is default and sense will load less in the background

Good! Sorry im a bit snappy im tired . No i think hes planning to release somewhere else, modaco probably. Yeah i saw this aswell, knowing him he will have a fix though, it may even be an option in CM9 to have tablet UI or not
phone is not finished yet.. it was released so soon only because of MWC in Barcelona. Give it few weeks and phone will be probably best on market (fck i hate samsung)

There isn't a tablet option in CM9 yet that's built in.. I have seen the option in individual CM9s, but it isn't a general feature

This is interesting. I am still stock but this is the smoothest Sense out of the box for me.
Are you rooted? If yes, did you port stuff from your phone? This would create problems especially switching from another version of Android.
If you aren't, it could be stuff that you have installed also.
Just a guess.
Could you specify where you get lags? I didn't really notice any lags. There are slight delays sometime (for example when you open the clock (defaults to world time, which sucks)) but that's to be expected. Other than that it seems very smooth to me.
You can download Apex or Nova Launcher from Play store and you don't have to have root. I prefer Apex because it just fels more smooth and has more options. And who thinks that Sense is not lagging should give Apex a try and than compare yourself
By the way Sense gets disabled by itself if you set Apex as default launcher. That's a 100 MB pure win on RAM.
Just by scrolling between homescreens, i only have clock/weather widget and contacts widget and calendar widget + some icons on my homescreens. Sometimes it runs totally smooth, and sometimes it lags when scrolling to the next screen.

I have gone from 2.1 to 4.0, in between using all kinds of launcher.
It's true in the earlier version the difference can be quite obvious. But I don't think so for 4.0. Sense may be slower, may be not. It is no longer obvious.
But I don't use fancy background, just a static picture. And I always turn off animation.
The OP is talking about smoothness and not response which I agree that sometimes sense causes some delay. But that split ms is harmless to me. I am not going anywhere in that time span anyway. But for the OP to notice such a difference is abnormal.
Apex launcher made me love and buy the device again lol
Sense fan since the early days, but not 4.0 i don't like the taste or will tolerate the lagginess on a quad core hot chip

With all due respect how can you honestly be okay with a half-baked phone? I am a galaxy SII owner and I've had my HTC one X for one day. I love the phone but sense still appears to be more of a memory hog and hindrance than anything else.
I know lots of people who are happy with SGSII's because the software largely functions as its supposed too (I still put vanilla ROM on it because touchwhizz is ugly) but I am already experiencing my htc rebooting the launcher everytime I press home after opening a few apps.. I also noticed that something like 650mb of the 1gb ram is being used when I turn the phone on... Sense is seriously a memory hog. Multitasking doesn't appear to be functioning how I'm used to on the S2. HTC should make sure they iron out kinks like this before they rush to market, after-all their USP is the software...
Even before I received my HTC one X i was reading weekly about bugs and problems people were having with it, which unnerved me a bit.
Thing is, I actually like some elements of sense and it's a vast improvement from my desire but the fact is I can see sense really dragging the performance down over the life of the handset. Even if I use Apex launcher, sense's launcher still drains memory.. I'm removing sense asap

Lag switching pages with live wallpaper

It's a feature or a bug?
Because a think the second...these is someone out there trying to fix it?
I really need smooth switching because I've found the best live wallpaper for me "terra(earth in English, I don't know if the name is translated in Italian or not) hd deluxe edition"
Btw I think I need some new chargers now...on my car, on my bike, at my office and also on bus and underground...because I think it'll drain my poor battery

Not a feature. Sense just takes so much memory that there's not enough to animate the lwp while switching homescreens.

[Q] Thought the HOX was powerful?

Hi all,
I'm beginning to question the power of the HOX.
I purchased Gyroscope 3D Space Live Wallpaper, and installed it on my Nexus 7.
I was very impressed may I add !!! Nice wallpaper.
But, when I put it on my HOX, unlocking the phone became very slow.
Constantly re-drawing the homepage etc, sometimes crashing.
Getting a blackscreen and then having to swipe left, then right to get my homepage to show.
How can the HOX struggle with this wallpaper, but my N7 displays it with ease !!
Thanks.

On stock sense isn't locked into memory so once you're out of ram it gets killed and has to reload.

Ahhh, this may explain why. But could a live wallpaper really lag the HTC One X, which is a quad-core phone? I mean come on, a quad-core struggling with a LWP...

I see,
But I'm using Nova launcher?
I know sense is still running, but essentially the LWP is running on Nova?
And I have it set to "Aggressive Desktop", which is basically "Keep in Memory"
So why the constant re-draw?

But the problem is that "Sense" isn't just the launcher of HOX. The fact that it runs on sense rom is the problem. Sense rom has aggressive memory handling as someone pointed out in few posts above.
While Nova is your default launcher. you are still basically using sense rom.

[Q] Strange delay on app drawer anyone else have this issue?

Hey guys, im not sure if this has been discussed before and I have googled the issue but no one has seemed to have pointed it out.
I am currently using ATOM rom on my GSM Maguro Galaxy Nexus and I have noticed a slight delay when flicking from page to page on my apps but it only happens upon opening the app drawer... I'm not sure if explaining it in words is the right thing but its the best I can do without recording the problem with a camera as I do not have a separate recording device to do so.
I'll go into more detail however, say for example I open my app drawer and I immediately swipe across to show more of my apps, there is a 1 second delay before it decides to acknowledge what I have done. Does anyone else have this issue?
Also I would like to point out that it is not the custom roms fault as it does this on every rom I have used, including stock rom.
Its not a huge deal of a problem but it is quite annoying as sometimes i'll swipe again and end up on the widgets page of my phone because I think my phone hasn't registered my finger correctly.
Thanks for reading guys
Weird?!?! I just tried this and I don't have that issue.

I was using Stock launcher, i've tried all of them launchers and they're all nice but just don't feel 'right'. I'm so picky . The ROM I am now using (installed last night) is Android Revolution HD and it seems to have solved at least a little bit of this delay which is strange because last time I had this rom installed I remember the lag still being there. I can also recall that 4.1.2 and below didn't have this random delay but 4.2.2 does?
