[q] mtd install system reboot failure - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok please tell me what on earth went wrong here. I was stock deodexed el30 rom.. i tried install the zip of clean gb mtd, and when i did the system reboot, it rebooted right back to cwm 5 (the one that i currently have). am i missing something here? i thought when you go from a bml rom and install an mtd rom (other than cm7 or 9), that it should automatically convert.

The CWM that comes with MTD still says 5.0.2.7 even though it is modded for MTD. Did you change kernels? The reboot in the power menu may be broken for that kernel.

nope, i just installed the rom.. and decided to just go ahead a system reboot. should i also install the mtd kernel before rebooting? was that my mistake?

not all mtd Roms will auto convert however that one should. When you flashed the ROM did cwr reboot? It should have rebooted when converting to mtd. Maybe try reflashing zip

After I installed the rom, I just selected system reboot, and that's when it rebooted right back into cwm, so I tried again, the same thing happened.

My guess is a bad download. You will need to Odin with repartition checked, then root then redownload the CleanGB 1.12 MTD version and reflash.

Problems with Inc cm7

Flashed cm7 on bosses Inc and then gapps. Got the phone booted then went to file manager to move the radio to SD root then rebooted to hboot and it doesn't see the radio image which is named correctly.
So I can't flash the new radio but the phones ril is working so...
Next, the market will not open... just hangs at the white screen the shuts down and goes to the home screen

I'm having the same problem with Market right now. Just flashed CM7 7.0 final. Tried several other ROMs too. They're all doing the same thing.
Had the wrong gapps flashed lol. Funny thing is had a customer come in with a stock ally doing the same thing and a rooted d2 doing it too lol.
Still doesn't change the cackle I can't flash anything through hboot on this phone
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
I've tried 3 different GAPPS packages, plus Sense ROMs are doing it for me too.
Is your sdcard formatted to fat 32? Necessary to flash via hboot.
Ill have to check that, the one thing I forgot, what is it stock?
Sent from my ThunderBolt using XDA App
Before you install your ROM make sure you wipe everything. Make sure you format /system
Doing those 2 things will fix most people's problems.
Also CM7.0 is pretty buggy, I would suggest flashing RC1 or preferably one of the latest nightlies.

FAT, so if you didn't format it, that's your problem.

Okay, so the phone was running awesome. Then he went to hang up on a call and the phone rebooted. It went into a boot loop. So I restored stock nandroid. Then wiped and reinstalled cm7 and all was good. dropped back down to recovery and flashed gapps and the phone boot looped again... I'm baffled.

When upgrading from nightly to nightly, I only do a dalvik wipe which can be done via RM. But when going from different roms, you need to do a full wipe, including system, which can only be done in recovery.
I don't know much about this stuff but what I have experienced is that rom manager sometimes doesn't fully wipe cache and dalvik cache and it makes my phone loop

Ended up downloading cm7.0.3 and a different gapps and all seems well except he is claiming to have SMS issues

You are probably on EXT4 now and trying to restore an RFS kernel. You can either flash a kernel like Samurai or Shadowkernel or run ext4toRFS.zip to return to that system. Other option is to Odin to EC05, root and then restore.

Changing names on backup

Can u change the names on the backups I do with cwm without messing up my backups
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
have u tried restoring one of those backups? Did u see if it still worked with chaning the name?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
No I haven't tried
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Yes you can change them. There cannot be any spaces or un-supported characters like "/", "*", etc...
You can use underscores or camelCaseNomenclature to help make it flow / read easier for multiple words or numbers.
I have had trouble with this and always got md5 errors. Use ROM Manager to rename them as they are made. It works great.

Worst that would happen is an md5 error. Reboot would bring him right back.

When I install rom manager and run cwm it ask for my phone Samsung epic 4g or Samsung epic 4g (mtd) which one do I choose and does rom manager work for this phone being I bricked a phone before messing with rom manager
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
if you are on a mtd rom choose mtd. if your on a bml rom choose the first option

You choose Samsung Epic not MTD unless you have done the conversion or on a MTD ROM. If not on MTD then Install Clockworkmod at the top of the menus of ROM Manager. It installs the officially supported CWM on your phone which is uses regardless of the recovery that is on your phone. You should also find and flash CWM 5.027 zip so your phone's recovery matches for 3 finger salute. And yes it works fine now that the Epic is supported.
If you are on MTD ROM just hit menu key in ROM Manager and pick manual recovery or something like that and then choose Epic-MTD and clockwork 3.xxx.

[Q] cm9/el30 temp update question

i understand that in order to update the prl and profile on cm9, you have to install the temp el30 multiboot and then reboot to go back to cm9 rom. i tried installing the el30 multiboot file yesterday for that reason, and when i rebooted phone from recovery, it rebooted right back into cm9. so, what exactly am i doing wrong that i can't have the phone temporarily reboot into el30 to perform the updates?
No it will only temp. reboot into bml cwm which allows for delta flashing...

He's not talking about that... he's talking about the full el30 rom that you can boot from your sd card... seems that you may have unpacked it wrong... head to that thread because some people were having the same problem...

baseband version aka modem? i think

hi guys,
alright some i'm new to this forum. i wouldnt consider myself that great at rooting and flashing etc but i'm getting the hang of it. been following qbking77 cuz he is like my god lol
anyway, i need to post at least 10 times before i can post on the thread that i wanna post on and i searched a little bit but cant seem to find what i'm looking for. and btw i have an Epic 4g.
ok, so ive noticed everyone saying i have CM10 or 9 and this and that and then they say they are on FC19 or El22 etc. I want to know how do i update/change that stuff, what my options are, and what would those benefits be?
i'm currently running CM10 build 9/14 by nightlies on stock FC09. will be going to the most recent build soon but want to maybe play with the baseband version. thanks guys.
You are correct. It is the baseband aka modem software on your phone. There is a thread in development that allows you to flash with clockwork mod and another thread that has you changing modems with Odin.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Since you're on CM10, your first stop should be this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30433583
Should give you better service/speed than any Epic modem.

Ok. I'm a noob. I'm on stock fc09. So if I go to that link what modem would that put me at? And I'm assuming flashing means all you do is go to recovery mode and install zip from sd card, correct?

That will put you on the Nexus 4G modem. Most have reported great results.
And yes, boot to recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, and flash away.

The modem package includes a modified kernel. You must flash the ROM first, or its included kernel won't recognize the Nexus modem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
it keeps failing. i downloaded this: http://darkierawr.com/Android/Users/xboxfanj/nexusmodempatchcm10prevAIO.zip
was that the right one?
I'm pretty sure my baseband said unknown for the first hour or so before it showed the modem version
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
the only way i could get that file to install was if i did it before the CM10 rom. when i do it after it fails. so i wiped cache and dalvik again and just installed CM10 and now i still have unknown baseband version. what do i do? will i have to do a data reset?
Try mounting system and data in recovery.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
i accidently wiped date, then cache, then dalvik, mounted system and then mounted data. flashed CM10 and then tried the modem and it still failed.
nevermind! i accidently mounted sd card instead of system. wiped everything rebooted recovery, mounted system and data and installed both zips. booting up now. taking a while for the animation tho....
