Just received my Desire HD and after 1st sync I noticed a message saying "Matched contacts suggestion" with a list of some of my contacts...can anyone advise what this does?
If you're talking about when you link contacts, then I believe it just links certain contacts together into the same contact. You have to check through them though, because sometimes they may be trying to link two different people into the same contact.
Yeah, for example it may suggest you to link a Facebook contact to a phone contact, and if it is the same guy, you will see his Facebook updates when he/she calls you etc.
Yes, linked contact...its strange though as I dont have duplicates, so not sure why it would try to link some contacts...under what criteria? Thanks anyway.

assumedly you've signed into facebook or twitter.
What it's doing is going through your social network friends list and saying "Aha! I have that name in the phonebook. They probably don't want them in there twice, so I'll ask if they want me to link them"
As I'm signed into facebook and twitter via the app and via sense, some of my contacts have 4 links! It's so much better than having 5 contacts in my phonebook for each person
yes, that would make sense..but I dont have facebook or twitter (probably only person on the planet)..I did find in my google contacts online, that as well as "My Contacts", there was a group made called "Other contacts", which had copy of all my contacts, so I deleted the group..everything was ok for a while then I got message again asking if i want to link some contacts..weird.
even worse: no info whatsoever is given with regards to what it means if you tap the name and it becomes green? Do you eed to tap all of them?
pull down the notification bar and open the linked contacts (if its still asking you) and it'll tell you who it thinks can be linked...you can choose to accept or discard the suggestion. simple
and don't worry you can always unlink contacts later should you wish to.
Get it again
Hello,
I received this question also and I was selecting all my links one by one.
I thought what if I do 'dismiss all', then maybe I can 'select all' after that..
But all my suggestions where gone..
How can I get all the suggestions again?.. I have many contacts..
Thanks in advance from The Netherlands.
Best regards,
Johan Groeneveld
Hi,
I read somewhere that ICS can have high res contact photo in the People App, but only when synced with Google+.
Is that true?
That means, if you don't sync with Google+, and utilizing only Google Contacts (GMAIL Contacts), you will get low resolution 96x96 from Google Contacts.
So, how do you add the Google+ profile of your contact in the People App?
Do you add it manually? Or the People App will automatically search and pick one for you?
Because, if we can add the G+ profile manually, I think we can have workaround by creating G+ profile for them manually !
This is a right f**k up pain in the ar5e problem that could probably be easily fixed by google.
I used an external app to link all my google contacts to my facebook contacts thus providing pictures, its better to do it that way because if I install a custom rom that requires a wipe I dont have to re-link the contacts.
Unfortunately about 0.5% of my phone contacts and facebook friends have google plus so i've no idea how to get around it.
ICS looks so cool and polished only for someone to ring me and present me with a picture that looks like its come out of a 1980's pong game. grrr

Make sure you have your IRL friend in your normal Android/Google contacts, then if you add your manually created "friend" on Google+ there will be 2 separate contacts on your phone - one for phone, one for G+.
If you go to the "phone" contact and select "edit" in the menu then on the next page there will be an option to "Join" in that menu.
If you then select the G+ contact, it will be joined to the phone contact as one user with phone number and G+ pic!
Or I think you can just manually add a photo to the contact but I haven't tested whether that is definitely hires or not.
All my contacts are on Google Contacts. I've assigned photos from Picasa but they still look crap...
Why Why Why..
I think you can manually change contact photo with high res one.
But, once you synced with Google Contacts, it will be replaced with the low res from Google Contacts.
I wish there is an option to just disable contact photo sync, photo only.
Or, is there any clever developer who could create an app to simply replace all contact photos with user selected one?
I could imagine the app would work like this:
. The app works like the contact app, when started it will show you contact list
. Then you can assign photo manually to each contact
. App will remember this assigment
. Woth one button hit, the app replaced all contacts pgoto with the assigned one
So, every time after we synced with Google Contact, we simply run the app, hit the replace all contact photos button, and we are done!
Okay, any dev out there? I will pay premium for this kind of app!

a much easier way is to get a decent sized pic of your contact and save it to your phone and then edit contact > edit pic > select new pic. simples! - they DO NOT have to be from Google+ at all!
Hope that helps!

Not quite true. As soon as you sync your contacts with Google it sends them to the cloud which uses 96x96 photos. For some reason these then get used on the phone.

In my experience the phone will keep the high res contact picture, but if you delete your contacts for whatever reason (e.g. factory reset) then restoring from Google Contacts will bring back the low res versions.
The Google+ versions seem to work with high res photos, but since only about 4 or 5 of my "real life" friends actually use Google+ this is a bit pointless for me.
This is a problem with Google Contacts only saving low res pics, and it has been a request from the community to upgrade these for absolutely ages. So far it has gone unnoticed, which I presume is because of the focus on using Google+.
There seems to be a lot of duplicated features now G+ has come out, such as Picasa/G+ Photos; GTalk/Messenger; Google Contacts/G+ Contacts; and these really need to be consolidated which will hopefully iron out issues such as these.
guys how do I edit a contact on the phone?
Ive gone into the people app, gone into the contact and even long pressed but I cant see to edit the contact?
I want to assign a high res photo to the contact from a photo in my gallery. Is this possible?

I really don't understand why they didn't turn long press on in the People App. Having to reach all the way at the top of the screen to get to "Menu" icon and then "Edit" takes a lot more effort especially when you have to edit a lot of contacts.
Anyhow. Do you guys know whether all the "linking" I made to each and every single contact to its Twitter or Google+ account will be sync'ed or backed up on Google's server? Thinking about installing custom ROM.
Does anyone know how to link contacts from within the phone (like when you have multiple contacts like with Whatsapp adding its own version of the contact)?

Took me a day to figure this out myself. Haha. Go to "Edit" under the menu button for that contact, then hit once you're in the edit mode, hit menu button once again, then hit "Join"
When I go into Accounts & Sync in the settings menu and try to add Facebook as an account, it doesn't work. I click to add facebook but it just returns me to the settings and never adds it. It works perfect for Twitter, LinkedIn, and other apps as well. Anyone else having this happen too? I've tried uninstalling and clearing all data, didn't work.

Same here. Don't think its setup for ICS yet
Facebook has not made an app that actually works with Android. Many companies, like HTC, have made apps for that by themselves. Facebook and Google are not on friendly terms when it comes to sharing contacts data, so this might not change anytime soon.
Doesn't that make the People Hub pointless then? All of my "real" friends are on Facebook, not Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn so it doesn't sync any real info or high def pictures.

That's not entirely true. Facebook sync used to work with all Nexus devices but Google themselves pulled the sync due to them not allowing contacts to also be exported to Android devices. From Google:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/22/google-android-facebook-contacts/
“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”
They only stopped this feature on the Nexus line of phones and the reason Facebook sync still doesn't work is because Facebook has not made the necessary change yet that Twitter and the like have. Google however doesn't stop other OEMs from allowing Facebook to sync contacts though - I wish they would to light the fire under their ***** so I could get my contact photos back, but what can you do? They hate each other right now.

You could always start spamming Facebook to allow contact export so Google will let them sync again. I doubt they'll do it though.
The fact that any OEM can make this feature work again no matter what Google does kind of sucks when you only buy Nexus phones. I've gotten used to it not being there and I take a random candid picture of everyone I add to my contacts list now which works better in some situations since some of those FB profile pics don't give you any idea who the person actually is.

No they did not. The way Facebook synced before was a hack, they did not use Android contacts API the way others do and the way it is meant to. Google removed the hack.
Facebook does not want to share contact information with Android so that user 'owns' their data. They can always build their app the right way. Zuckerberg & Co just don't want to.

because it is called the People application, not the Facebook application.
Not everyone uses Facebook, as apathetically ubiquitous it may appear to be. Some people use Twitter. Some people use Google+. Either way, the point of it is that it links with multiple social networks. The Facebook application does not work properly with Android 4.0, and even if/when it does it is unlikely that Facebook will be allowed API access to the People application due to the fact that they do not make it simple to get at your contacts data. It's your prerogative if you want to blame Google or Facebook there, but the point I'm making is that the People application obviously has a point, since Facebook isn't the be-all-and-end-all of social networking.
So if i understand this right.
Google wont let facebook info sync. Because facebook wont let it fully sync and be backed up to gmail etc?
And this would mean all your friends facebook info would then be your property and not theirs (facebooks).

Google cannot stop anyone from syncing and using the API, this is open software. Facebook simply does not wish to implement that feature, since all contact data synced is accessible by other applications. The other thing is that Facebook does not wish to share friends email addresses.
It is entirely about Facebook not allowing user to do whatever they want with data shared with them by friends.
Basically, Facebook is afraid that if they allow people to export contact data, it will be very easy for everyone to just move all their friends to a new social network. Since Facebook only has one way of making money it's understandable that they want to make it as hard for us as possible to do that.
From Google's point of view, it's very exploitative of Facebook to expect to get special treatment on Android phones even though they refuse to play ball with Google, hence why their special privilege has now been removed.
Whose ever fault you think this is, it's us consumers who are made to suffer. -.-

Not backed up to GMail but backed up to the phone. If you delete your FB account and I only had you as a FB contact then you would completely disappear from my contact list, or if something happened and FB went down for a few hours or a few days I wouldn't be able to contact anyone who was synced only through FB. Most people only join existing contacts so they only suffer from not having the photo and status updates synced, but not allowing export could be much more problematic. It's not that it's your property, it's information you have access to that you have been given approval by those you have friended to have therefore you could just use what FB gives you and manually enter the contact yourself if you wanted to. Google is basically saying if that's the case you should be given the option to automatically export that entire list to your phone instead of having to manually enter all the information that FB is supplying you with.
This frustrates me also.. ever since they updted my nexus s and removed it. Its the only thing i will miss from htc sense. I know use contapps to sync facebook and its associatd contact photos

Guys I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I couldn't find it on a search of the forums.
When I go into the "ME" profile in the People app and click on my picture I get my phone number, Gmail, Google+ and Google Talk icons show up but no Twitter. If I swipe to the right again I only see updates from my Google+ account but not Twitter. Twitter is synched to my phone and I have looked in the "edit settings" on my profile but there seems to be no option to add it.
Any clues ?
Thanks
Anyone ? Surely some whizz out there must know the obvious answer to this (clearly not so obvious to me).
Thanks in advance.
Unlike HTC Sync the stuff pulled is just from google+..... Same as the FB app doesn't sync to contacts.
Danny
Danny I'm a little confused. I see the Twitter option in others profiles? Was the Twitter & Google + feed in the people app not touted during the Nexus launch ? I'm pretty sure it was.

Go to the People app, pull up the menu, and select the "Contacts to display" option. Click the Twitter option (it'll have the twitter icon and your twitter name) and it will list all of your twitter contacts. Find and open the contact you want to make a connection with, pull up the menu, and select "Edit". Then click Menu, "Join". Find the contact to join that twitter handle to, and you're done. Then just set your "Contacts to display" option back to whatever you had it at before.
Yeah, a little convoluted, but you only have to do it once.
BTW, there is a new twitter app that integrates nicely with your contacts now
This seems to be done for me in other contacts... but in the "ME" contact it doesn't. I just have the "discard" option and displays my google+ feed in the place of where the twitter is displayed in other contacts..... now I'm confused
Danny same goes for me. The explanation given above does not solve my issue i'm afraid though I am grateful for the reply. If I select twitter from the "contacts to display" it does not show my twitter name, just those I follow. On the ME tab it shows all my other personal details for other services so it should also show the twitter feed as well?

Yeah, you're right; I didn't realize you meant you wanted your OWN contact to have the Twitter updates. Apparently the Twitter app doesn't synchronize your own account as a contact, and there's no way in ICS to specifically add that connection, as far as I'm aware. Maybe they'll add that in a future update?
Ahhh ok,thanks Copkay. I thought I was going mad and missing something.

Sorry for digging out old thread, but I have similar issue and I thought there is no point in making a new one.
In people when viewing contact that has twitter integration I can see in "Connections" (or something similar, I have different language set to default) "Twitter" and "View Profile" (again, or similar) but I can't do much with those two. Taping twitter does nothing and taping "View profile" results in message "Could not download tweets. Try again latter". Is it normal? Is it supposed to "work" like that? I use stock Tweeter app on stock 4.0.1
Any feedback appreciated
Ok so I realize facebook won't sync with ICS so I get Haxsync that was recommended and its ok. However, I don't like this People app that ICS uses compared to the old simple Contacts. When I need to manually merge contacts I used to longpress and choose join contacts and now I cant . But I've seen posts where people say they manually join them, so there must be another way I'm not seeing. Menu options don't bring up merge or join either.
Thanks in advance for any help.

it is a bit annoying managing contacts in ics...i haven't figured how to automatically join contacts but I have been able to do it manually...for example...let's say your friend's name is "Michael B. Jordan" in facebook and simply "Michael Jordan" in your normal contacts...you have to change the name to "Michael B. Jordan" in contacts facebook and press "space" after the name change..you should see the "facebook name" be suggested right under the contact being edit..click it and it should say "join"..it is pretty annoying way to join contacts (maybe there is a better way, I don't know)...
it took almost an hour to properly sync my 70 contacts and their pictures with haxsync...sorry for the horrrible grammar and I hope it helped..
Annoying it may be... But open "people" Menu> edit> menu> join. Then either pick a suggested person or scroll down to find the right person.

Just made an already tedious process even longer. Damn girls and their stupid fb names. That's the only crappy part of wiping during ROM changes for me. Apps, data, ringtones, wallpapers, etc are all easy but damn having to manually rejoin contacts. Now even worse that's it's not native in ICS.
I'm at the point now where I think I'm just going to manually assign pictures to my contacts. Maybe download them from facebook assign them thru my contacts in google. This way the pix will stick from now on. Anytime I flash a rom, I won't need to go thru this tedious process any longer. I've given up lol.

You know I think this would make sense, but I just tried an import and the only option is to import a single vCard file from bluetooth or email.
This used to work out nicely in the 2.x.x days. You sync your google contacts and then facebook contacts. Join a few that the names don't match (ie John Doe and John D). Now with ICS, it won't even try to join John Doe with John D. Doe or Johnathan Doe, even though they are the same person.
The other thing is that haxsync only does photos. I have friends that I don't have saved in my google contacts because their info is on their facebook. Guess I could go through them and manually save a duplicate contact and number to my google contacts, but that's something I didn't have to do in the past. Taking steps backward is not what integration is about.

Haxsync does have an option "Additional friends to sync" under "Sync Preferences" - the help text says "These friends will be synced even if they don't match any contacts on your phone". Does this do what you want?
I think he means their contact info from facebook. The main app syncs not only a contacts photo, but any contact info they have on their profile.

For those who have multiple accounts and want to join them in a few easy steps:
Log into you Gmail account and go under Contacts.
Right above your contacts list, right in the middle, there is a button you click and have some settings come down. One of them is a "join multiple contacts". Hit it and it will automatically join all of them together. A lot easier if u have LOTS of multiple contacts and dnt want to merge them manually

I would love to have it sync the phone numbers . Like the FB app does.

Well I got friendcaster then used it to sync and it copied over with crappy low res pictures, so that pissed me off. The haxsync ones looked decent at least. I'll be fine for now until there is stock integration built into to CM9. I know the OTA ICS guys have figured it out.

haxsync is not showing my entire friend list from facebook
what is to be done??
In the options their is a setting which by default only syncs people already in your contacts. You can change it sync all your friends from facebook.
Also to some of the people earlier in this thread, the latest version of Haxsync lets you write HTC tags to the notes section of your contacts so at least you won't have to do it all again manually when you change roms
