Just use ROM Manager It will install recovery without adb or a computer. Just do it through an Android app.
But if you want to use AmonRA, you can follow any of the above links. You'll need the Android adb tool and drivers I believe (if you are running on Windows or Linux). On Mac, all you need is adb.

So basically... I have a unrooted, unhacked etc. Desire.. I want to test some of the new 2.2 roms..
Can I, without my phone being rooted, use "rom manager" from the market and flash a custom recovery, from where I can flash roms, radios etc.? Or do I have to something before I can utilize the power of "rom manager"?.... What about the new "fake-flash" released a couple of days ago?
Excuse me, but i'm coming from an HTC Hero where the only thing you did, was using flashrec...
I'm a little confused with all the guides around here.. Some say you have to use a PC/mac (I have a mac) to "root" the desire... Others say that there is a simpler way... I'm looking for the safest and simplest ... I like when procedures are convenient

To root it you'll need a pc/mac running linux, windows or whatever macs run. Afterwards there are workarounds that makes flashing ROMs relatively simple, without having to initiate recovery form a computer first. So step one: follow the root guide in the stickied thread.

Stop using Toolkits....
If you have a custom recovery you can download a SuperUser.zip and flash that.. this should give you what you want. Or you can download a Custom Rom and just flash that... problem solved you also dont have to go through the process of deleting the stock-recovery.sh that runs and kills your custom recovery.
I already fixed it but thanks for the reply and I should be not using tool kits thatsbfor sure but what do you mean about a custom recovery? How would I install that? So I would install the custom recovery then flash the su file and then flash a new from is this correct?

If you want to find out if your rooted check Play Movies. It will say ur appeared to be rooted and refuse service to the device.
The toolkit is amazing. I don't know why someone wouldn't recommend using it.
CWMR is a emergency thing in my opinion. It saves my butt countless amounts of time. U can flash it with Rom Manager, CWMR touch, and Rom Toolbox.
They are all available in the play store.
The toolkit isn't recommended because people don't learn things themselves. OP go superuser and see if things are given root or denied.

I was just saying the simplest way on how to do it in my opinion.
And I don't use CWMR much. Only if something goes wrong.
Hey everyone, so im trying to help out a friend of mine with rooting her GNex but I havent been able to find a way to root it and flash TWRP using Ubuntu 12.10. Is there any tut or tool for Ubuntu to do so? I've tried looking on Google for "I9250M 4.2.2 Root using Ubuntu" with no helpful results. Any help will be gladly appreciated I tried using her XP desktop and i couldnt find JDQ39 in the list for the GNex Toolkit but i was able to unlock the bootloader but that was as far as I was able to go.
All you need are the adb and fast boot executables. There is even a PPA that adds them to your Ubuntu install.

To root, you need a custom recovery first. Which means... It's already installed before you root, (unless you just booted it with fastboot - which most won't do or know the possibility exists)
I used to root all of my phones but I stopped because I started using crappy phones. Haven't even seen a rooted phone in a couple of years, I fear I may be rusty. Can I still use this method the same way? Also, any ROM recommendations? How is Cyanogen on Nexus? Thanks for the help guys!
You can use WuGFresh's Nexus 7 root toolkit to root your Nexus 7 running 4.4 Kit Kat.
The app is amazing and very easy to use. First use the app to install the USB drivers so you can connect your tablet to your PC and allow them to communicate.
Second use the app to unlock the bootloader...this is a must!
Third use the root toolkit to root your N7 tablet and make sure you check the box that says install TWRP recovery manager before you start the root process. You don't have to install the recovery manager technically... But you definitely want an advanced recovery manager.
If you do a YouTube search you can see how to do this step by step...if you learn better visually.
As for ROMs...load up the google play store and download multi rom manager, this app will allow you to put extra ROMs on your tablet without damaging your stock N7 rom.
CyanogenMod is my favorite custom rom...
CyanogenMod has CM 11 available for the N7 in the "nightlies" section. Dpmt forget to flash Google apps the GApps zip after you install CM.
For how to install ROMs with multi rom do another YouTube search to get the exact steps. Doctor Android has some really great tutorial videos...
Hope it helps...

Can you help me. I used the method and set up the drivers, tested it and it said everything was good, got it unlocked and then went to root and now it says it can't find adb device. I also suspect that the drivers may be erased off of my tablet but i really don't know.

Hi,
I just joined the forums this evening. This is my first post.
Basically I want to figure out how to re-root my (2013) Nexus 7 which I just updated to 4.4.2.
I installed 4.4 and had to re-root, of course losing all my settings and apps, having to reinstall and reset everything to my liking.
I have never made a backup.
I just now upgraded to 4.4.2 update, and all my settings and apps are in tact, however, I lost root.
I do not want to re-root and reinstall everything again, so I need help on recovery and steps involved.
I am still unlocked, and I have the TWRP installed as well as SuperSU and RecoveryTools.
Please advise how to make a backup and re-root in the least painful way.
(PS I did use the Wug'sFresh kit to do my rooting the first time around, and am not very comfortable using the SDK etc)
Thanks!
-Mike

Hi,
It is very frustrating I want to be able to keep all my apps/settings and configurations after root, but I don't know how.
I think there is an app that allows you to keep your root after upgrades, but I haven't really figured out which way to do things.
Any pros out there who can help?
Everything is fine on my tablet right now, just the way I like it BESIDES being unrooted.

have you tried flashing the SuperSU zip in recovery? should be all you need to do to get root back. dont need to lose any data. just re-enable root apps aka grant root permissions when they pop up.

Hi efan3719:
I don't have the zip in my SDcard but SuperSU is installed, but when I tap on it it says I need root access, and when I tap on Recover Tools > flash TWRP it says "need root" as well..
Should I download SuperSU zip latest file version and copy it over to my device and then run it using my file explorer?
Sorry, I may be confusing I'm still learning this stuff.

download SuperSU from here http://download.chainfire.eu/370/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip, put it on your device. reboot to recovery, flash the supersu zip. reboot. you should now be rooted.
:/
I have the zip file now on my device.
However, when I reboot into recovery TeamWin no longer comes up it goes to dead android character with exclamation point. :/
Try the nexus root toolkit. It makes rooting very easy with great step by step instructions.

I have that program. I used it to do my original unlock and root.
Can I re-root using that without losing my latest update/and settings?
I cannot boot into Recovery Mode to reinstall SuperSU (which I currently have installed on my system but it won't work when I tap on it because it says I require root).
So I cannot install the SuperSu zip I just placed onto my device.
This is confusing.
Okay I used Wugs again and looks like I am re-rooted.
Wugfresh is the answer to all these questions.-->> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475

Hi,
basically I had my Nexus 7 (2013) upgraded to KitKat 4.4.2 using the automatic (wi-fi) over the air update.
it installed fine but caused me to lose root. no other information was lost, all my apps and settings were the same, i simply lost root.
when you lose root, you are no longer able to access TWRP during the bootloader startup by going into recover mode. it will show a dead Android character.
so I simply connected my Nexus to my pc and (having Wug's Root Tookit and Nexus 7 drivers already installed from my first time rooting) I selected (from Wug's drop down menu - when Wug's program starts up) my build and version.. then it did it's magic and downloaded the pertinent files. (of course you need to have USB DeBugging checked in settings > developer options or whatever..
then i selected Root option and 'install custom recover' check box as well.. and let it do its thing.
TWRP started up automatically during reboot, and did the root.. then my Nexus was all good again, all apps and data in tact, with root. all good.
Hope that helps.
Excellent sharing. I have the same issue after upgrading to 4.4.2 via OTA

Fantastic post. I hadn't heard of Wug and did the old school adb push business. This was very very helpful. Many Thanks. :good:
Finally rooted again using Wug.
However it is asking me to make a full backup (nandroid).
Could someone help to show me how to make a backup correctly?

Just before upgrading from by Google server pushed OTA 4.4 to 4.4.2 I bought Pro version of SuperSU and enabled 'Ota Survival Mode'. Worked great, after OTA still root.
Saved the trouble (with my stock recovery) to temperary 'boot' TWRP via Adb fastboot and Usb-cable to reflash SuperSu.
Yes you should just be able to use WuGFresh's nexus root toolkit to update n7 4.4.2 update
The app won't have a 4.4.2 option but you can just select root any version and it will still be able to root your n7 running 4.4.2
Such a great program...
