Hey guys,
i am using all my android phones for a while with all the gapps provided. i really like them, but there are some things that make me angry and really would like to get rid of them.
let me start with the contacts syncing.
contacts app is fine, especially the way u can attach pictures to your contacts, which will be displayed in nice looking hd quality when getting a call.
so far so good. lets sync with your google account. oh well... picutures really look bad now. and each time you sync with it... it will be bad again, no matter what
(i know, the problem is the googleservice itself. we cant do **** here)
but how to handle this? if there would be another way to safe my contacts in a easy way, i would like to hear it.
so first point: no need for contacts sync
next point is gallery. i dont need the sync for it. google does not need to know anything
next point, music app. its fine, but there is no need for me attach it to my google-acc
calendar is nice and will be used. but even with this, i do not need it on other devices.
last two points are the market and maps. here we get a problem
i do need both of them. is there a way to avoid using a google account?
this could be a workaround for ppl who dislike using a google account in future maybe... if it is even possible. i dont know right now
You can disable account-wide sync for all the apps that you've mentioned. Gallery is a little tricky especially if you are using G+ but it's possible. In fact, you can skip signing into a Google acocunt completely should give you a clue.
You will only have problems with the market. As far as I know, you have to have a google account to download apps from the google market. But you could always install 3rd markets like Amazon appstore, Slideme and GetJar, off the top of my head.
the biggest problem i have is the contacts.
is there a way to easy backup them and restore, maybe when switching roms or whatever?
some for my calendar. how to restore it without signing in?
ps: i am not using g+
pps: if someone would know if there is a data folder or whatever, where the contents of my contacts and sms and calendar are saved, that would be enogth for me.
coz then i could just cut it off there and place it in my new roms
Your problem with contacts is bad picture quality..? Then don't put pictures on your contacts.. Google isn't looking at your pictures either. If you want to use the market you need a Google account. None of the information is stored on your phone so there is no folder on your phone that will let you back these up.

You can completely disable all syncing to your Google account if you want, but you're really just making it harder on yourself than it needs to be.
I realize there are some little niggles that are annoying about how its working right now, but I think its a bigger hassle to completely turn it off and do it all manually with a mishmash of other services.
if there would be a solution to have high quality contact pictures, i would use it. no problem with it
but it seems really ugly. dont you have that ****?
just as an example i found on the internet...

this is what any contact picture looks like after syncing my contacts.
if i just attach one without sync enabled, it looks awesome. after syncing, its like the picture
there must be any workaround for this problem...?!?

You just said it yourself.. don't sync your contacts. You aren't forced to sync anything. If you get pictures from Facebook there is an app called Haxsync that will give you high quality pictures.

thats the point, where to get my contacts if not syncing when switching the roms?
and no, i dont use any social network
STOP
We are forced to sync! Ok one can avoid it if you now what options to be checked and which not. But in first place everything is synced to somewhere. You have to some kind of "pro" to avoid it completly
I had all my contacts accidently synced to google after android "stole" my thunderbird contacts claimed that they have to be googlemail.com contacts and then after an accidently removal of an small hook evrythink went to google.
The best was that my thunderbird then all contacs removed as well, because my phone said "all contacts in the homeaccount have been deleted"
###Just to have my anger put at least somewhere###
To come back to the orginal poster:
Now it works all perfectly well with birdiesync (i read somewhere but havent tried thta MyPhoneExplorer would to the trick as well), i have only an google account for market access reasons. I dont use gmail (as google reads all mails in order have the right advertisement for me) but k9. Just deactivate syncing under settings.
But i cant so far confirm that the contact pics arent downsized. Because i dont really care...

hello everyone,
I finally got my desire this monday and being playing it all the time.
I have all my gmail/facebook/phone contacts under the people menu and i have filtered them as phone/with numbers only. everything looks nice, but when i try to send sms to multiple contacts it shows all my contacts, facebook/gmail. how can i fix this?
and to have my contacts sync automaticly i want to "convert" my phone contacts to gmail contacts. is it possible and if yes, will the facebook links will be stored as well.
thanks for answering in advance!
ps.in order not to get "google it" comments i did heavy searching but as the words are like people, contacts, desire, sync it is almost millions of results, mostly unuseful.
What do you mean by 'it shows all my contacts'
Do you mean in the Messaging app or in the Contacts app??
Contacts has everything linked into it Google+Facebook, your phone will link Google with the contacts on your phone so you always have your contacts on your phone and Gmail.com, Facebook contacts wont show up on Gmail.com and the pictures from Facebook wont show up on Gmail.com regardless of if they are linked to contacts on your phone or not,, i hope this helps a little bit

In messaging app. I just want to see my gmail/phone contacts, not the facebook contacts as it is in people app.
Also is there a way to just import gmail "my contacts" rather than "all contacts" as all contacts include all the email addresses you have used so far in gmail.
Thanks
If you open up Gmail.com and click contacts usually you can have a play around in there and move/delete certain contacts and thatll then sync with your phone
and as for messageing, do you mean;
'im sending message to 5 people and it shows the 5 seperate people in messaging'
or?
'its showing messages i have received on facebook as well'

I mean when I am goign to send texts to multiple recipents in messaging app, in the recipent selection windows, where you tick the people, I am getting the list of all contacts, including facebook emails and mobiel numbers. I don't want facebook but gmail and phone contacts.
Was it more clear this time?
Thanks for the superquick answer btw.
I get ya know
out of curiosity, your facebook, did you select sync all contacts or sync only contacts on phone?? (this has happened to me in the past) also if your facebook contacts have phone numbers listed on facebook itll try synching them as well
This time it is me who didn't get the question.
Are you asking if Facebook is selected under the sync menu? In sync menu. myfacebook, and gmail accounts are selected.
I just don't want my facebook contacts(numbers and emails) under the messaging app and "phone" menu.
if you go into the sync menu and click on facebook is it only synching with contacts in phone, or all facebook contacts?
There are only 3 options under Facebook under Sync:
Account settings(just selecting the sync frequency)
Sync live feed
Sync contacts
I can only select or deselect the last two, so I don't know where to look if it syncs with contacts in phone, or all facebook contacts
Go into the facebook app and on the main menu screen press Menu (on phone) and click on settings have a look in there at the bottom for 'other settings' and there should be an option for sync contacts, bringing up this screen;

if this helps any??
Now I understand you
But under the other settings it is only "Helpful Tips". Maybe it is because I am using the default facebook app?(for htc sense, that was preinstalled on the phone)
Maybe,,, it might be worth having an quick install from the market and seeing if this changes anything
other then that this might be a 'feature' in the official HTC ROM,, i never checked it though and rooted and installed a Cooked ROM 2 days after purchase
double post*
i will try the app from the market!
The app in the market comes as an update to HTC sense one, it didn't change anything as I can see.
I will try something on my own now
Keep us updated mate as there might be more out there having issues
after hours of googling and calling htc hotline:
you can't link your phone contacts to facebook contacts and keep just facebook contacts out of your "phone" and messaging tabs.
i will spend some hours on my gmail contacts and add photos manually, remove facebook sync at all.
Dang!
i have to admit that sucks,,, i like the sync contacts only in phone so some of my contacts have pics but other then that,,, that sucks!
Give it a week or 2 and someone will have Cooked a ROM or made a MOD to fix this issue
just downloaded haxsync 1.4.1 and im having issues syncing past the A Contacts
was wondering if anyone has found a fix for this or knows whats up?
the XDA Link from the Android market page is dead
HaxSync issues
I am also having issues with HaxSync and was looking for the developer's thread here on XDA but it seems to be removed.
I am currently running 1.4.3 version of HaxSync on Galaxy Nexus and the first time it synced the contacts everything was fine. Then I swapped batteries in my phone and I am now missing contact pictures. The contacts are still synced with HaxSync, but half the contact pictures are gone.
just updated today to 1.4.3 everything synced but i think i've got some battery drain issues now

Yes, I am seeing this as well. Like 2 hours on battery and was at 50%.
Also, if you want to test out my theory, try pulling your battery and when you boot back up I wanted to see if all your contact pictures were still there or not.
correction MAJOR Battery drain issues 50% in 2 hours, had to uninstall
to late on the battery screwed everything up when i uninstalled had to redo all my contacts

Yep, I am trying friendcaster now, but cant seem to get HiRes photos on ICS
im just going to hold off for now, apparently this facebook sync issue is supposed to be fixed in ICS 4.0.3 whenever that finally pushes out, friendcaster is like syncmypics it works but doesn't allow high res stuff

The hi-res pictures issue is an issue with GMail not allowing hi-res photos. If you notice your contacts with Google + have great looking photos, but the others do not.

The contacts that are linked with Google+ in my people app STILL have pixelated pictures.
HaxSync is great... However, since I used SyncMyPix, it actually downloaded the picture and inserted it into the contact that way it was available when I went to my Google Contacts on my desktop computer.
Which brings me to my next point, apparently contacts will use whatever picture is stored on your Google Contacts instead of any service trying to sync over top of it. So now I have the option to REMOVE the pictures completely from the contact and then allow HaxSync to 'faux' sync them or just stick with the low quality version till something more suitable works.
Incidentally, does anyone know of ANY program or extension or anything that will sync the profile pictures from Facebook to Google Contacts? I found one called Google Contact Sync, but it grabs the low quality version instead of taking the HQ one.
Anyway, hope someone can help out with any of that.
Android will use the FIRST photo a joined contact has...
So, if you have low-res photos from Google and add hax-sync on top, then you are stuck with the low-res photos for any auto-joined contacts.
However, the reverse is true... if you have hax-sync contact and then add Google contacts, it will continue to use the high-res photos from Haxsync.
So, the solution is, delete your Google account from "Accounts & Sync," Sync your haxsync account, THEN add your Google account back in.
If you have any duplicates with slightly different names that don't get auto-joined, make sure you start with the Haxsync version of the contact when you do an "Edit > Join" to select the Google version. This will retain the high-res photo.
You can simply chose which pic to use for the contact.
-> chose contact
-> menu -> edit
-> in the edit menu, you should see all the accounts linked to this contact
-> tap on the picture next tu HaxSync
-> chose "Use this picture".
Voila!
^^^^ True, but then you need to do it for each and every contact individually. If you delete your Google account and re-add it, it will automatically keep the high-res pic as the default. Much easier.

Ummm, it's also used no data, so apparently it's not syncing anything for you.
Did you go to accounts & settings, and add your hax sync account, then go into the account itself and check the sync box? because the app doesn't do anything if you don't do those steps.

Also, is there anyway to actually SAVE the pictures into the Contact so it's ALWAYS there? Or will I have to wait for SyncMyPix to do it.

Quick n simple
I didn't realize until after I read this thread that I also disabled that function. Good advice Namuna. I think I may have it fixed. Hope OP gets it solved.
edit: Since we're on the topic of contacts and such... What exactly is the "AT&T address book"? Why can't I import my contacts from my SIM card without choosing AT&T address book or google services? Does this mean AT&T would then have all of my contacts?

I'm thinking this is their new service to keep your contacts for u in the case of emergency, just like wat sprint n verizon r doing since they do not have a sim card to save contacts to. Instead of having to save your contacts to a gmail account, which many "common" users might not have any idea dat it syncs with the phone, at&t provides the service of migrating the contacts to a new phone just by placing the sim in a new phone n activating it. This is what I assume though, might be totally incorrect. lol.
edit: Btw, I think if you freeze/delete AT&T address book, u also will not be able to add new contacts to the phone.
Yeah I followed some guy's list of things he froze/disabled and one of them was the WMsync... something rather. That is the AT&T Address Book and it didn't show up in the options to import from SIM. I've since enabled it and it's there again and I'm also able to add contacts.
I just thought it was weird that I can't save the contacts directly to the phone. Is the AT&T Address Book just like a cloud sync?

I guess you can say so about AT&T address book.
What do you mean save directly to the phone though? Won't you want it to sync to your Gmail acc directly so in case anything ever happens to the phone, you won't lose your contacts?

I understand how u feel about cloud servers at one point, I felt very insecure about having my information somewhere where other people with power can easily access them on a whim. But then I thought to myself, if someone really wants the info, with enough power they can get it as long as we are connected to the "network" aka the internet. We have to be totally void of connectivity to the internet to avoid having our info in other people's hands.
Reminds me of something I saw when I watched Battlestar Galactica; how Galactica had to be completely and utterly network-less in order to avoid any possibility of being hacked and accessed by the Cylons (Cybernatic Lifeform Node). The moment they networked their infrastructures, they immediately got hacked, and had to rely on firewalls to defend themselves lol. Just a side story it was a great series too

Another question about the cloud servers. Would you guys recommend the AT&T Address Book or the Google account thing? And why did you choose it?
I'm trying to download my contacts into the car Bluetooth, but it wont recognize any contacts. I'm guessing that's due to them not being saved to the phone.
I'm wondering if its something to do with rooting and debloating. I could swear it was working before that, but I can't figure out what I would have disabled to cause the problem.

If you want facebook stuff out of contacts, open the people app, hit menu then view, and uncheck facebook for htc sense. This will not remove the facrbook stuff already there you will have to delete it manualy but it will stop new stuff from being added or updated.

I'm not on a sense rom tthough. I'm on cm7. I don't have that feature
-My life is a shooting range, people never change-
I think this is really annoying, too. Especially if you switch between Sense and AOSP roms. Unfortunately, I haven't found a quick way to mass delete all the notes. You have to manually edit each contact and erase it. But as long as you never use another Sense rom, the notes won't fill back up, so that's a plus.
Neat trick I have used before, though: delete the notes with MIUI. It's got a quick clear button to erase all the content in a contact's note box. You still have to manually edit each contact, but it's a little faster than CM7 or anything...
You can also try this app that's supposed to replicate the MIUI contacts and see if that works for the quick clear: http://goo.gl/TtOcU
Hope this made sense.
Just putting it out there that there may be an app that can do this.
I know I used an app to erase a bunch of annoying duplicate contacts I had after I accidently restored them 3 times. Of course this is a much more specific problem, and I haven't checked, but just throwing ya some ideas
just went through them all. thumb hurts. lol

Only by doing it manually
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I had to do it manually too. I sync my Gmail contacts so it was a little easier to manually erase the "HTC Notes" on the web interface.
1. Export all the contacts to the SD card, which produces a .VCF file.
2. Edit this VCF file with a good text editor like TextPad, and use that to delete any lines beginning with 'NOTE:', e.g. use the regular expression '^NOTE:'
3. Delete all the contacts off the phone - the app 'Contact Remover' can do this.
4. Force a sync; this is because you may get a warning about too many deletions. If so, confirm the delete. Check they are all gone.
5. Import from the SD card.

Not one click, but it works way better than what I've had to do before.
1. Open contacts in gmail on web.
2. Export all contacts to GoogleCSV
3. Download the file.
4.Edit the CSV and just clear the whole notes column or edit them individually if you have contacts with notes already.
5. Delete all your gmail contacts.
6. Import newly edited file.

Wouldn't this remove any contact pictures associated with those contacts?
I don't believe the CSV file stores the picture....which means in my case I'd have just as much of a PITA to fix the pictures.
I'm really surprised no one's created a contact cleaner app yet... there was a great one on my old Palm device eons ago that would let you do all sorts of things to standardize your contacts.

It was fine. I don't use this phone very much. The other day I turned my phone on and I had my entire Contact list from my GMAIL #2 account in my contacts list... All 160 of them plus the Gmail #1 (6 contacts). I must have did something in the SIII that brought all these contacts from my GMAIL #2 into my SIII Phone. I don't want this. I tried deleting one of the Contacts from GMAIL #2 from the SIII and it also deleted it from my GMAIL #2 email contact list on my desktop computer. I certainly do not want these contacts in my phone.
The questions here are...
How can I delete all of these contacts from GMAIL #2 from my phone Contact List in the SIII without deleting them from my original GMAIL #2 account.
What did I do to make this happen? I'm sure it just didn't get this way. I must have did something.
Finally: Is there some sort of Manual for this phone/android other than what I got with the phone? A practical Hands on/How to use this phone?
Tap menu and then scroll down to accounts. Have a look in the Google and Samsung accounts.
Should have options for contact sync.

Go into settings and under the accounts area click Google and remove the #2 account which should remove those contacts you don't want on your phone, then you can add the account back but when you do make sure the contacts box is unchecked when it gives you the options of what to sync. That should work for what I believe you want to do

Contacts Thanks
Thanks for the answers. I deleted the GMAIL #2 account and that solved the problems and saw the settings. I must have synced them. Now... If I bring the Gmail #2 account back on and do not sync the contacts but check to have my email only show up (Checked) on my phone will that be ok. Also... Can I just add contacts to my phone and unchecking Contacts to email #1 or #2 Contacts? I would like to be able to check my emails on #1 & #2 but just manually add contacts.
Thanks again...
Oops no answer yet for a good how to detailed manual for SIII or android? I need it.

Wait, you have only 6 contacts you want in this phone?!
Honestly, it doesn't really matter how many you have in your phone, you never really have to page through them to call people. Just go to the phone dialer and start typing the number associated with the letters in their names. They pop up automatically. I have like 2200 contacts because it pulls all my work email contacts in automagically. Don't stress it, its easy to find.
Alternatively, you can always just put those 6 people on your home screen, or star them and put them in a widget....there's a lot of things you can do to isolate them.
For a good Android manual, I suggest Androidcentral.com Android 101 : http://www.androidcentral.com/tags/android-101

Ya if you go back to that same Google section In the settings then and select one at a time and uncheck the contacts box and just the emails you will be able to have both emails with none of the contacts and just add them as you want. But remember most likely whatever email you set up first will most likely save whatever contacts you add to the phone going forward
