Galaxy Nexus Screen Brightness at max - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just got the Galaxy Nexus (Canadian version) and was comparing the screen to my old Nexus S. One thing I notice immediately was how low the brightness was at max brightness on the Galaxy Nexus when compared to the Nexus S. The whites where noticeably duller on the Galaxy than the S. For people with both devices, should that be normal. I was hoping that the Galaxy Nexus brightness would be comparable if not better than the older Nexus S. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

My sister had the Nexus S, and I have had it in for some fixing a few times.. What's important to mention in this comparison, especially for the white's, is that on the Galaxy Nexus, the "factory" white isnt really "white".. (At least that's what I see when I look at the screen.) This have been fixed in various roms and stand-alone fixes in these sites.. If I turn my Galaxy Nexus to full brightness, it is deffo better and crisper than on the Nexus S. (I might have been too busy checking out pixels on the Nexus S to realize exactly what you mean.)
What I mean is that, on the Samsung Galaxy S II, I got a headache from looking at full brightness, on the Galaxy Nexus, the brightness is lower, this might have something to do with the small "+" behind the name of the LEDscreen name of the SGS2, but I find the Galaxy Nexus to be very soothing to look at. And I think it is a matter of "reproducing colors" you're finding yourself in. The Nexus S might be able to do "brighter/more vivid" colors, but if you compare the Galaxy Nexus' screen to "any" other screen on the market, it is capable of reproducing colors almost perfectly, (when it has the color fix, - mostly noticed in low brightness tho.)
Congrats on your new Galaxy Nexus. I'm sure, with time, you will see that the screen is a different technology than on the Nexus S, and.. Thus the brightness is "different", but I won't say lower.
Just my 5 cents.

So I just compared my galaxy nexus with a Verizon one at the store and noticed that the Verizon nexus screen was more brighter and vivid at max brightness than mine. Right now, mine is still on stock v4.0.1 while the Verizon model was at v4.0.2. Did they change the color temperature with the newer update. The screens hopefully should be the same between all galaxy nexus models, right?

Unlock bootloader, update to 4.0.3 of your choice, see if the screen seems better.. If not.. reload bootloader, return phone, get a new one with a display that's not assumingly.. "bad"?
I dunno man, it sounds strange, no where I have gone, I have heard anything of any upgraded specs in the Galaxy Nexus. I don't know alot about the structure of LED screens.. But maybe some liquids in it, is bad or wrong.. I dunno man.. Sorry. But try to unlock, root, update and then turn the brightness to full? If you do so.. You can always lock again and get rid of the traces of flashing stuff. And just.. Get a new phone, showing it against another one. In Denmark, 7 days is the MAX you can have a phone before it can't be returned and exchanged, 7 days, and it will be a repair, instead..

Over the weekend, I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader and flash the stock image on Google's website to 4.0.2 since the Canadian version I had was still stuck on 4.0.1. Brightness issue is gone. Seems that the max brightness level on 4.0.2 is brighter than on 4.0.1.

Amoled differences between CDMA and GSM Galaxy Nexus with PICTURES.

apparently there's contrast and color differences between my brother's GSM and my CDMA Galaxy nexus.
Both phones are newest pushed OTA updates. CDMA is more washed out. anyone else notice this?
I don't think it's necessarily CDMA vs GSM. I bought GSM phones for my wife and I, and they have different screens just like your pics.

so its luck of the draw I guess. I perfer the higher contrast screen. what amoled is supposed to be.
it could also be v 4.0.1 vs. 4.0.2? if you notice the top of the screens have high contrast. only the middle and bottom are washed out perhaps by the changed gradient each os version uses?
bedoig, can you check to see if both your gsm phones are running the same OS version? thanks
I noticed the difference on mine right out of the box with both running 4.0.1. The difference is so striking though, that I'm thinking maybe it is software related. Especially since, like you said, the contrast in areas like the notification bar looks fine. The settings screen in particular is dramatically different in color. It's weird.
Edit - I haven't checked the build on my wife's phone. Mine's yakju, need to check hers.
I don't have a pic handy but I noticed the same thing between my GSM and Verizon models. I even returned the Verizon for an unrelated problem and the new model is also much worse than the GSM. 4.01 to 4.02 didn't seem to make any difference with it.
I have noticed on my GSM that the screen when displaying blacks doesn't turn off like the SGS2 did, do you think this is different for all devices or something that is true of the Galaxy Nexus?
I think the monitors of the GSM and CDMA version are the same. At least the same as in model number.
But Samsung AMOLED screens are not known for consistency. With every release of their Galaxy phone, forums like this one are full of complaints about monitor quality inconsistency. There are pictures on the web showing a number of GSM Galaxy Nexus', all have slightly different satuation, contrast, and color temperature.
new technology guys. geez. there's still millions of people out there that think plasma burn in easily still. and iphone fanboys that think apple invented the smartphone. get over it or get another phone or another phone. simple.
Last year I bought two Nexus S (one for my wife and one for me) at the same time (Best Buy 12/16, release day). The difference between the two screens was/is amazing. Despite buying two phones at the same time, presumably from the same batch, and all settings and firmware the same, her screen is much brighter and has much less yellow tint than mine. So maybe it is true that there is quite a variation between SAMOLED screens...

I had 2 Nexus ones. There was a considerable difference in screens, I chalked it up to amoled being new technology.

nexus one had two different version screens. amoled and slcd because of amoled shortage. many other phones have had two versions but i forget which. i think nexus s had slcd variant also.
In my case they were both 9020T, SAMOLED versions, not 1x 9020 SAMOLED and 1x 9023 SLCD. Just like the OP the screen specs are identical but with much visually noticeable difference in practice.

I wish (its a big wish) that someday, cell phone manufacturers actually calibrate the screens prior to being shipped.
If there are manufacturing differences in panels, batches or otherwise, the calibration part should atleast make them uniform.
Agreed and it can be done automatically.
Francisco francos kernel in the dev forum improves the colors and whites/blacks. Looks much better now

I have both versions and can attest the same as OP. Besides Verizon's being washed out, it also suffers color banding, and visible vertical amoled lines, extremely visible using gray background even at full brightness. On my GSM version is hardly visible, and only under the very low brightness.
Also, the Verizon's version touch screen isn't nearly as responsive as my unlocked GSM version.
I wanted to return and wait for the replacement, but quickly learnt that Verizon sends you re-certified device in return... Also tested in store units, and they all seem to behave the same as my unit.
In my case its safe to say that Unlocked GSM version performs head and shoulders above the LTE disciple.

I can confidently second this post. I went through 3 different Nexus S's last year because they all had a strange tint to them that was different than that of my girlfriend's Nexus S. I've also sold easily hundreds of Galaxy S devices at work (same model) and have noticed the color changing over time and even out of the box when people buy more than one at a time.
At the end of the day though it all comes down to preference. If you get a screen that looks ugly to you, exchange it for one that looks good.

New to Galaxy Nexus and ICS. (also have Galaxy Note)

I just picked up a Galaxy Nexus alongside my Galaxy Note now.
What should I know/be aware of in terms of optimizing or making my Nexus better? Apparently there's a screen/brightness problem with this?
Also, the main reason I grabbed a Nexus is to experience vanilla Android OS. Touchwiz isn't so bad for me, but now that I realize the difference, I'm glad I got both phones.
Thanks guys
What brightness problem?
The only things that I think of now are you probably need to watch out for your battery life and turn on GPU rendering only if you feel the phone lags.

I would like to buy NEXUS... which is good compared to GALAXY S II??

My frends... its over many weeks and days.. I'm looking for a new phone.. I want to know which is the best phone... is it a Galaxy note! Or GALAXY S II or THIS GOOGLE NEXUS ...?

Well since your asking in the Nexus forum most of us will say the Nexus. If you ask in the Note forum, most of them will say the Note. If you ask in the SGS2 forum, most of them will say the SGS2. It is all preference. I had the SGS2 before this Nexus and I prefer the Nexus. The SGS2 is a great phone, but I prefer Google Phone's so Nexus it is for me. I will probably never buy anything but Nexus from now on. I had the Nexus S 4G and when I upgraded that, I missed the Nexus badly even though I upgraded to a more powerful device. I say get the Nexus. To me the Note is too big and I wouldn't get the sgs2 because the sgs3 is going to be out sometime this year. I would wait on the Galaxy S 3 or get the Nexus if I were you.
I wouldnt get S3 even it is the most powerful ever. I learnt my mistakes getting a non-nexus phones since last 2 years. Got me a Nexus S and now Gnex, its Nexus line for me from now on. All this closed sources from Sammy and others make me stay with nexus all the time.
Well then....THEY ARE ALL THE SAME. Honestly on a day-to-day usage basis you won't be able to see any real significant differences, 2 cores, 1gb of ram, and a good GPU on all of them.
NOW BENCHMARKS
Thats where you'll see the differences.
Nexus all the way!!!
I used to have a SGS (Vibrant). The only thing I hate about Samsung is that they do not provide updates as quickly as they come out. I have to rely on custom roms and such to get the latest OS from Google. That's why I bought the GNex, as long as you are or flash to yakju, then you will get the updates as soon as Google churns them out. And if you have a penchant for flashing ROMs, then the GNex will still serve your purpose.
I say go with the GNex, you can always sell it if you want to. Also, the GNex is the only pentaband phone that's readily available with an Android OS. If you buy the GSM version then you can either use it on ATT or TMobile and still get 3g from both.
Good luck!
i regret buying my nexus, unreliable battery life. if no other phone got my interest between now and iphone w/4g speed, im jumping ship.
All phones are the same....a slab with an OS on it....the question u need to ask is do u want a stock Google experience, or do u want a custom interface? u will not notice any speed differences, or anything like that because the naked eye just doesnt! people say all this crap about quad core and all this, but theres no need for it! these phones are already fast as hell, i just dont get how much faster people expect it to get! What does "fast" mean? its not like u boast around ur benchmarks to people (unless ur on XDA all the time)
I don't think you will notice a huge difference between both phones.
It might be better to wait a few weeks for Galaxy S3.

" It might be better to wait a few weeks for Galaxy S3. " <= That's correct
im surprised no one mentioned the 720p screen, i think this is the best feature of the gnex over the S2. if you do a lot of browsing or watching videos on your phone you will def notice the difference between the gnex and S2. OS is not as important as hardware esp. if the phone has a strong dev community like the S2. the S2 already has roms running 4.0.3 but if you prefer to stay stock and depend on the carrier or google for updates then the gnex is the way to go.
Even on the hardware side the gnex is behind the S2 in some areas like the cpu(skyrocket) and the 8mp camera. The S2 with ICS is faster than the gnex, there's quadrant benchmarks that put it over 4200 mark with 4.0.3. Some will disagree with me here but i really miss the SD card slot, as i have the gsm gnex it only comes with 16gb. i have about 3 gigs free now and have to delete stuff from my phone more often. I still pick the gnex over the S2 any day for the screen though, 720 x 1280 is a huge jump over 480 x 800 on screens bigger than 4 inches. I can read text on websites without having to zoom on the gnex, just squint a little whereas on the S2 text is just a blur without zoom.
I love design of GNEX than S2

I'd wait for the SGS3. The SGS2 is better than the GNEX in ALL but screen and looks department.
Had a play with my GF's GS2 yesterday, and WOW is it faster than my GNEX.
GS3 will blow GNEX into 1990, sod the google experience.

The SAMOLED+ screen on the SGS2 is just gorgeous though. That's what I primarily miss after going to the Nexus. The colors were better, and it was so luminous, that I would have it on minimum most of the time.
I do like the higher resolution I have now, but that isn't everything when it comes to a display.
I also would have liked to have my 32gb SD card carried over here.

[Q] galaxy nexus or htc one s?

hey guys, so i got a fido upgrade coming up, should i go with the htc one s (should be releasing soon) or galaxy nexus?
i'm just going to be using it as a daily phone, just the regular stuff. i'm kind of hesitant on the htc phone seeing how the htc one x has so many issues.
opinions/thoughts?
thanks!

I'd go with the Galaxy Nexus even though I have serious issues with the display. There doesn't seem to be anything in the One S that would make it better than the GN. Battery life and camera perhaps?
Personally at this point I'm waiting quite eagerly what will the Galaxy S III be. SAMOLED HD+ perhaps?

Depends what you want.
One s had awesome build quality and feel with the micro arc oxidation body. Super slim with a smaller screen. It had a faster processor but the screen quality is worse. Lower resolution. Sense with less developer support most likely.
Galaxy nexus has a better screen with better developer support and will get jelly bean much quicker

don't think fido would be getting the S3, they don't have much of a phone selection there anyways, usually i just buy phones online, but since i had an upgrade thought might as well decide between the htc and GN.
I'd say go with the Nexus One S.
Or if that isn't available the Galaxy Nexus, best phone on the market even with it's "Uber outdated sucky" specs.
I'm just going to tell everyone to get the device that is NOT the Galaxy Nexus.
If the one x had a verizon version about a month ago...i would have taken it the day it came out...stupid contracts

I'm very satisfied with my Galaxy Nexus, great Display and Vanilla Android. And of course you get updates much faster. I had HTC Legend and Galaxy S before and was always waiting a long time for newer versions. The camera of the Nexus is also damn quick. I will only buy Google branded devices in the future.

Pick the One S for the specs.
The krait processor is around 30% faster than the A9 processor found in the Galaxy Nexus.
But, if you love Amoled screens and early updates then the Galaxy Nexus is a good choice too.
Both are great phones but the One S is newer, and hence has the benefits of a newer phone.
Three main points:
- Pentaband (I have been on T-Mo for 7 years and have no intention o fleaving)
- Development support
- Largest screen I can get
That means Galaxy Nexus... for now...

The Samsung note has a bigger screen.
Anyways I'd choose the gnexus. Just cause its guaranteed updates. Whereas every other phone relies on carrier to push that to you unless you manually update it and at that your still waiting for a carrier somewhere in the world to give an update. And we all know how good they are at doing that... Unless your going to be using ported roms which just aren't as good as something made specifically for the device. IMO your not going to get any phone a whole lot better than the gnexus right now. Minorly better, but not leaps and bounds. Plus, your getting ics on the gnexus, which makes everything a lot easier, and for whatever dumbass reason, still isn't out officially for other devices on a global scale.
For me it's hard to say Gnex or One S/X. I've got nexus from few weeks and it's Superb, but i never have my hands on One S/X to compare with Gnex. When you get phone with contract by internet/on-line shop you've got 14 days to change your mind. So take Nexus first and try it for couple days, then send it back to the shop and take One S/X and try it as well as Nexus. Then i'm sure you'll find out what is the best "one" for you.
All best.

I'm in sort of the same sittuation, the difference would be the phone is both, daily use and development phone.
So far, the cons and pros I have managed to grab are:
HTC One X:
+ great display IPS2 with better color reproduction and possibly better battery life
+ policarbonate body and Gorilla Glass 2 makes a strong point in quality of construction
+ good camera especially after latest updates
+ Quad core processor which means for at least 2 years the phone will keep its head up
+ Sense UI from the regular user point of view
+ capacitive button's which don't take screen space so the image displayed is trully 720p
- Senese UI from a developer's point of view
- many user seem to have reception problems and with 4.0.4 update, on standby it looses connection.
- Power button seems to be not so convenient placed
- probably slower updates on new Android versions
- for now games need to be optimised for Tegra platform
Galaxy Nexus:
+ android vanilla
+/- pentile superAmoled display
+ power button easy to reach
+ browser and flash seems smother than on HTC
- hardware can be considered old with only dual core processor and same GPU as S1
- camera quality quite bad
- no gorilla glass, but some enforced glass but users complain about scratches easily made
- cheap plastic body easy to scratch or crack
- buttons on screen taking from 720p resolution and it seems that no other company went this
way, both HTC and Samsung are still using capactive buttons
- low speaker volume
- bad battery life, especially on browsing
I really don't know what to get. Difference between Nexus (taken free of contract) and One X (with 12 months contract) is around 100$, in favor of Nexus.

Anyone come from g nexus to GS3

I have been thinking about getting the GS3 and currently have the galaxy nexus. Is it much of an upgrade to those who have switched. Anything you miss from the galaxy nexus that you wish the GS3 did or had? I know that this is a subjective set of questions so I'm just looking for opinions.

The devices I had used before using this Galaxy S3:
Verizon Galaxy Nexus (So I was on 4G LTE as well)
HTC Rezound
Motorola Photon 4G
The things I liked about the Galaxy Nexus:
Seemingly lag less operating system
"Raw" Android felt more like a laptop than it did a smartphone because of the lack of bloat
Things I didn't like:
Signal drop. From what I understand wasn't exclusive to the Verizon version.
Software buttons took up screen real estate. Add your launcher buttons and you've essentially got two rows of software buttons.
The screen wasn't as large as some of the competitors.
The processor was already 'past generation' when it launched.
The things I like about the Galaxy S3:
It's blazingly fast. Not connection wise obviously lol (I miss you Verizon LTE but I don't miss pretending to be a baller to afford it) I used to hate TouchWiz but I don't even feel like getting rid of it for a vanilla rom since Samsung has really refined it.
The screen is HUGE. It has hardware capacitative buttons so the screen is only taken up by the launcher icons.
The hardware is more future proof. S4 Krait puts Exynos 4 to shame but compared to the Galaxy Nexus, it's like Usain Bolt.
The colors look gorgeous. The Galaxy Nexus looks good too but I feel like it's 'darker'. I don't know how to explain. The black levels are great on both but the S3 has better 'bright' colors. I guess that'd be contrast.
I have them both in front of me, full brightness on the same webpage: ign.com and for some reason the whites on the Galaxy S3 look more 'white' but both have gorgeous black levels. I also see about two extra lines worth of text plus some extra white space on the bottom of the screen, thanks to the extra screen real estate and larger screen.
Here's the thing: If I had already picked up a Galaxy Nexus on Sprint, I'm not sure I would upgrade unless the cost was minimal and I didn't waste an upgrade. The Galaxy Nexus is good enough to wait for devices later this year. However, if you could sell your Galaxy Nexus and spend very little to pick up the Galaxy S3, it's definitely a really good device.
^ I agree^. Plus, so far battery life is much better. We'll see how that compares once JB is released to the S3.
Thanks Essenar that's was the type of info I was needing. The software buttons taking up screen real estate is part of the reason I was looking at the GS3 plus I use apex launcher anyways. I will have to try to see if I can track one down on the cheap.
