Yeah so ive probably just been stupid and not thought of something here but anyways...
We cant sync facebook contacts anymore because facebook and google have had a lovers tiff.
I want my contacts to have pictures because it just looks lame without them.
Is there anyway of getting my facebook contacts pictures into my contact list any other without going round all my friends taking pictures of them and using photos from the gallery?
Google + is a no go because im the only god damn one that has it .
Oh and im completely stock 4.0.2 so any hax are are most likely out of the question.
Thanks for any help in advance guys! ( and gals )
Not a real good solution but you can grab each user's picture from FB or whatever and apply it to your contact within GMail. I didn't do it for everyone but I did do it for the people I contact the most.
I've heard HaxSync does that, havent tried it myself + it costs money...So...Here is a link to the app.
I use Friends Sync from the market works ok but you still need to add connection to each contact from your original contacts list bit of a pain I know
HaxSync is WELL worth the money.
HaxSync gets my vote too, worth the 89p-odd it costs

Android 2.x has an option for adding a Facebook account under the "Accounts & Sync" menu. However, none of the cooked ROMs I've tried have actually got this function to work.
I am just curious, what exactly is it meant to do? Sense™ has Facebook integration that includes the ability to perform a few functions via the People app, as well as pull down contact pictures (the most common feature I guess). What does vanilla Android's "Facebook Sync" actually do?
I would imagine part of it involves contact images, but is that all?
actually you can download an application not that much good but it would b enough to handle the facebook activities
go to market and download addressbook application
then download facebook mix in this will be an external to that application

Sincmypix is the perfect tool to sync contacts pictures! Just try it.
It's safe because you don't enter password in the app.
I am affrait of internal password applications.

Syncmypix is a good one! +1 for that
I tried syncmypics a couple of days ago, and it mixed everyone's photos up. was very confusing. and it took me quite a while to go through and delete all the photos afterwards.
Am glad it's working for you guys though. Just wish there was something that worked for me too.
Hey guys,
Thanks for replies... Not quite the answers I was looking for though... What I really want to know what the Vanilla Android 2.x Facebook sync is *supposed* to do, whatever that may be.
However, although this is slightly off-topic, if you chaps are looking for the best way to get your Facebook pics into your contacts, then I've found what I feel is the best solution for you.
I tried SyncMyPix which in theory is great, but in practice, it's completely hit and miss (at least if you have a 200+ list of contacts as I do). In the end, I settled for a completely external application that syncs your Facebook pics to your actual Google Contacts online. Android then syncs the Google Contacts, pics included, as normal.
This method worked brilliantly for me, and I suggest you give it a shot.

You can delete all the pics from Results -> Menu.
I had that native sync working and it pulled down about 300 people into my contacts list, the ones with mobile numbers listed anyway, thank god it didnt override my google cloud contacts!!

I didn't see that. whoops!
I may flash a custom Gingerbread ROM a few months down the road but I'm staying stock until the hardware checks out. The only thing I don't like about Sense is it's gone and added a ton of Facebook friends with phone numbers to my contact list and I really don't want them. Is there a way to remove them? I can't seem to find a simple solution.
Thanks in advance.

I just double checked, contacts aren't being synced for Android Facebook or Sense Facebook. When I go into the contacts app (I think it's called People) I have set my 70 contacts from Facebook for Sense to not be viewed, but they still appear in the list of people to call or send messages to. I don't care if they're there, but at the least I don't want to see them. I have them hidden in contacts but they appear in Handcent and Phone anyway.
Did you ever in the past link up FB contacts to an android phone? In that case I believe it also syncs up with Google's contacts in the cloud...but I may be mistaken
Yeah this got posted a while back, I know what you mean it's annoying. It meant my phone tried to sync a ton of stuff I didn't want to my car stereo unit via Bluetooth.
Someone did post up a solution, try a search for Facebook and contacts.
Hey guys, finally tried Cyanogen and WOW. Been up all day and night playing around with it but haven't found any way to sync Facebook contacts like the HTC Sense Facebook app. Damn, HTC really pulled that app off well.
I realize that I can try another custom ROM but this seems to be the bees knees. Any help for this Cyanogen newb would be greatly appreciated. Happy holidays!
Facebook for Android can sync all your friends to contacts or only sync existing contacts.

Hm.. I'll tinker around with it a bit more. It's not updating the contact pictures immediately. Dialer is a little lack luster compared to the Sense one but I'll be content if I can get the contact pictures to update without much fuss.
Thank you!

it really doesnt do a good job tho. you have to have your contacts saved as their exact name on fb - which can be annoying. Plus, sense gets hi res pics as opposed to blurry fb app pics.
i used to have an app by which you could manually sync your contacts to fb - but i dont have it any more and cant remember the name
anyone know the app?

There were a couple that I recall..... but I don't recall the names either lol. I used them on my Xperia X10.
It seems that Sense has put "Notes" in all the contacts and binds them to the respected Facebook profiles, even if you manually link it to another account. My wife has an English and a Vietnamese name for instance. And it's a nuisance when an old broken image of her from my SD card pops up. HTC Sense was fantastic for this.
Maybe someone will be willing to port it over. I have some ****ty coding skills and was looking into doing a few Android apps. Maybe I could figure something out but I doubt it.
*** EDIT ***
Nevermind... turns out the Sense Dialer is heavily tied into the Sense framework. Looks like I may need to look at another customer firmware. I never knew how attached to the Social phonebooks and other Social aspects of my Android phones.
The ONLY thing I dont like about rooting is
I dont get the Stock HTC Facebook app that you can sync your contacts with their facebook pictures.
All the other Fbook apps on the market suck. Can anyone port it, make an app similar to that one, or anything?
I know you like 2.3... but if you are willing to use Froyo migueltherocker's GratiousSlide has the same facebook syncing with contacts.. and I was happy with it till my A.D.D lead me to the next 5 ROMs

Lol actually I opened the market and found an app that I can sync my contacts to pictures on fbook, just sort of like the stock contacts app.
The app is a replacement for your contacts but w/e. Ill just use that to sync all my contacts, and assign as main contact app the one with cyanogen
TA-DA!
I wouldn't mind checking that out, what is the program called?
It seems like it's been so long since I had stock. What am I missing here? The official Facebook app syncs its contacts with my own on the phone and imports pictures. The only thing I don't see is the link/unlink that sense has.

The stock Sense overlay, if I remember, by default synced all contacts photos linked to a FB account with their FB profile pic, and even gave you the option of which photo to sync with (FB/Google/manually set).
With vanilla, the FB app will sync contacts, but I am noticing that your Google account image will be the default image, and I do not see a way to make it switch to the FB picture.
You guys should download
"Contapp"
its really good, does the same thing as the original froyo app... its a contact replacement.. just dont set it as default and your done
Wohoo!
Now, is there anyway to make the caller ID pictures bigger?
Syncmypix, Friendcaster, forget it. I've found a way to get higher resolution pictures of my Facebook friends as their contact pictures in the People app, and it was easier than I thought.
The official Facebook app. The recent update allows you to set a picture in any album as a contact picture - just tap a photo, press the menu key, press 'Set as', then Contact photo. I've been able to get much better quality pictures than I was able to using Syncmypix (which crashed every time I linked a photo to a contact).
Anyway, enjoy!
Thanks... work perfect.

Gotta do this once for each contact? :/
Just did this and the quality isn't any better than using SyncMyPix.
Nice
but for me with 100+ contacts to match its to much work

And then what happens when someone changes their pic on facebook? That won't reconcile with the phone.
no thank you.. i will be there atleast 2 or 3 hours
Yeah, I only did it for about 30 of my contacts - the ones I contact regularly.
I was able to get much better images than I did from Syncmypix, and I was able to choose which picture of them I wanted. I don't think it'll be affected if they change their profile picture because you can choose any image.
Might not be for everyone, but if you have a spare 15 minutes and care enough about higher-res contact pictures, I recommend it.

I think his point was that he would want it it change when they changed their Facebook pic.

I read the original post and thought it was to good to be true. Then I did one and that was enough B.S. for me. Wow I'm lazy!
nice one, thanks!

Id like to know the answer to this too.
I've actually turned off Contacts sync - under the Accounts & sync > [email protected], I saw several things were being synced and I was worried that was one of the reasons I was getting poor battery performance. I keep Calendar and Gmail synced and unticked everything else. My contacts aren't affected.
I don't feel that compelled to keep syncing contacts, especially if it'll mean reducing image size for contact pictures. Again, I realise this isn't a panacea for everyone, just wanted to let people know. For me, it's better than nothing.
What's a good way to get contacts into your phone w/o using contact sync?
I have about 2-3k contacts with email, multiple phone #s all stored in gmail. Honestly doubt I'd spend the time to manually put them all in. Contact sync was one of the biggest reasons for me to choose Android back when I first jumped ship from iPhone. It's a perfect sync with what I have on gmail.
So do you have any solutions to my problem?
