[Q] Can't Boot To Recovery Mode CWM - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm new to the android community but not new to tinkering with gadgets so naturally the first thing I looked into after getting my SGH T989 was how to root it. Unfortunately, I seem to have screwed something up.
I followed one of the many guides on how to root it and I initially had installed clockworkmod v5.8 something. From there I was able to access recovery mode but when I tried to install zip from sd card, it would let me select the super user zip file but after that it said something along the lines of "This action cannot be done" and I could only choose from the "No"s.
Thinking that I had maybe flashed the CWM wrong, I tried to reflash it via Odin. Everything passed on Odin's side but now I can't access recovery mode at all. My phone boots normally whether I hold down the two volume keys and power key or not. I read somewhere that maybe flashing a different recovery method and then flashing back would help but I can't seem to find another recovery method, all I can find is Odin. Any suggestions?

Anyone? Can anyone at least point me to a download link of another recovery method other than clockworkmod so maybe I could try flashing over it then reflashing clockworkmod? And would I flash it via Odin the same way?

FIXED
Okay I did two things and the problem was resolved, although I'm not sure which issue was at fault here.
First, I did a factory reset of the phone (just through the normal settings menu, since my phone was never rooted).
Second, I learned (from watching a video) that to boot to recovery mode, the volume up and down key must be continued to be held down even after the vibrate from pressing and holding the power button. Previously I had let go of all three buttons at once once I felt the vibrate. I'm not sure if this was the issue or not since the first time I accessed recovery mode I did it by releasing all three buttons upon vibrate.
Anyways, phone has been rooted, I have superuser app, backup has been created, now looking for ROMs. Cheers!

yep you only let go of the power button, you can even continue to hold the power button, but the main thing is to hold the +/- until "SAMSUNG" disappears

Here's what I did, you are correct.
I too was in a situation where my Samsung Galaxy S II AT&T i777 handset REFUSED to boot into CWM recovery mode. This stubbornness was AFTER I installed an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM (my SGS II is rooted and unlocked).
I tried EVERYTHING, including booting in various modes using ICS CWM menu.
I tried renaming ROMS "update.zip" and placing the ROMS in the internal memory and the microSD card root directory.
And I tried doing the manual pressing of keys, which is the original way of doing a "hard reset" from the old G1 days in 2008. I would press the volume up key, while pressing the home and power on keys. Nothing.
After I entered a Google search "my SGS II will not boot to CWM recovery mode" I came to your thread.
I read that you were hold down BOTH the volume up and down, not as I was doing, and as some say, the "volume up."
For about 15 seconds I held down at the same time "volume up/down" (both), the home key and power on key (my phone was off). Voilà!!! It went into recovery mode. I wiped all data, including the cache, said to install zip from SD card, and installed a new ROM (that was NOT named "update.zip" like it had to be on the G1).
So anyone doing a search, that may be the issue, you have to hold down BOTH the volume up and down at the same time, not just the volume up key. Again, that's what worked on my phone, the Samsung Galaxy S II AT&T i777. Maybe it is different on HTC handsets.
Thanks to the OP!! To think I spent about 8 hours on this issue, read the OP's post and five minutes later I had a new ROM on my phone. or is it

[Q] Help! Accidentally deleted system and can't restore or install

Coming from a phone with microSD extension, I had never encountered such an issue:
I bought this phone with a stock 4.2 Rom installed and tried to install a custom Rom. I first installed the latest version of touch recovery (tried it and it seemed to work fine) and did a backup using the default settings. Then I erroneously chose to format system and data, thinking that I could then "install from zip". Strangely, these steps deleted everything in the /sdcard directory and I couldnt select "external SD" (because the phone isnt equipped with it anyways?). Then I made a second mistake and restarted the phone, despite the message warning that I no longer had an OS installed. I took the battery out, and then held the power down while pressing the power button. The phone couldn't get into recovery, but instead showed a screen with the android logo, a large "Start" sign above it, and "Downloading...", "Do not turn off target !!" below it. Pressing the power button now got the phone to show just "Google" and a lock logo under it. The PC (windows 7) can not detect the phone throughout the process.
I tried the latest tool kit and samsung's USB driver but couldnt get the phone recognized by the PC.
Does this mean that the phone is doomed???
Please help!!!
Trent
Relax, it's not easy to 'doom' your Nexus. Especially with all the hard-workers in XDA
Try accessing Recovery mode by holding down BOTH vol up + vol down, as well as power. Holding just vol down + power is 'Download Mode', and at the least you can get to this. Means your phones far from doomed
Thanks a lot for the reply!
As a matter of fact, I also figured out how to get back to recovery (if only I had read your post earlier, my pain would've been much less!). But the problem remains that I can not get a target ROM onto the phone, since: 1. whatever I did seemed to have gotten rid of the nand backup supposedly stored in /data/media/TWRP/BACKUPS/ (I'm using TWRP V. 2.3.2.1). 2. I can not get my PC(or Mac, for that matter) to recognize the phone or the internal storage.
Any pointer from here?
Thanks again!!!
Trent
You can download a factory image and install with fastboot. It's quite easy and instructions are readily available on this forum. You can then install a custom ROM afterwards if stock is not your thing.
Found the answer finally!
It's the adb push method. Basically, it's to install adb drivers and execute a few commands via the command window. Not too bad... Don't know much about fastboot yet though ... If anyone else needs more details, please PM me (to save public bandwidth).
Thanks a lot anyways, whpnhp and jocalderone!!!

[Q] How to get out of stock Android system recovery (power button won't select)

Okay here's the run down. I'm on JB and rooted, and was about to apply the new FreeGee bootloader unlock, when I wanted, out of sheer curiosity, to check to see if I could get into the stock recovery by holding powering off and then holding Vol Down + Power. Ever since I rooted it didn't seem to work anymore, but I didn't have a need to boot into since manually applying the JB update.
Anyway, neither Vol Down+Power of Vol Up+Power worked, the phone just booted normally. So, I decided to use ADB to boot into recovery using "adb reboot recovery". It worked, and the stock recovery loaded up. I can scroll up and down using the volume keys, but for some reason cannot select any option by pressing the power button. If I hold the power button down, the phone will appear to restart, but it boots right back into the stock Android system recovery, where again, I cannot simply select any choice with the power button. ADB doesn't list the device since I'm in recovery, and I only have fastboot installed on my lapton running XP which isn't available at the moment (I'm on OSX 10.6).
I'm thinking pulling the battery may work, but I don't have my torx screw driver handy. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps where to get fastboot for OSX (it appears to still be missing from Android SDK). Thanks.
EDIT: SOLVED - Turns out in stock recovery, the soft menu button (the one on the bottom right) is used to make the selection, not the power button like in the custom recoveries. Still not sure why the Power+Vol. Down doesn't work to boot into the stock system recovery.
Use the menu button to select now.
what dm said. they wont be lit up but they still work
Yeah, I figured that out almost immediately after posting this (feel dumb now). Thanks though.
Any idea why the key combo Vol. Down + Power no longer works to boot into stock recovery? Seems odd that it worked before when manually updating to JB.
Hello. Can you tell me another solution. I have similar problem. Stuck in recovery mode with faulty power button, and can't get out of there. It's not working with menu button. Is there a way to do it with SD memory card? Thanks.

[Q] Can't boot up recovery mode

Okay, so my problem is simple, I can't boot into recovery at all. Every time I try to boot up recovery, my phone shows the little Android dude and just gives me the option to "Start". Nothing else, even when I press the volume key down or up, does nothing! My phone is also looping on the CyanogenMod screen so I can't even go into the phone itself.
Also, when I try to use unroot my phone, it says "ADB can not be found", I install the USB driver manually, and it still says the same exact thing. I'm pretty much all out of options, hopefully someone here can help. I'll be very grateful.

More info please.
What was the last ROM/kernel you flashed.?
What recovery are you using?
Did this just started after installing a ROM, kernel or mod..?
More details please...

What buttons are you pressing to get into your bootloader? I assume you are holding the volume "down" button and pressing the power key. This gets you into Odin Mode and only allows you to boot the phone normally by pressing the power key for "start." You need to hold down the volume "up" AND "down" keys at the same time to enter the correct bootloader with the recovery mode option. Once you are booted into recovery just restore your phone to a nandroid backup you have created that you know works.

GUIDE: What to do in the event of "soft bricking" your tablet...

If you have flashed a rom and your tablet "soft bricks", i.e. it gets stuck at the Samsung splash screen or boot loops Recovery there is an easy way to recover without having to reflash the original firmware in ODIN (assuming you were smart and made a NANDROID backup before flashing your rom).
TURNING THE DARNED THING OFF:
Here's the problem. If you are at the Samsung splash screen or boot looping Recovery, you cannot turn your tablet off by just pressing the power button and you can't pull the battery. This prevents you from getting back into Recovery and restoring your NANDROID backup. So here is what you do:
1) Plug your tablet into your computer (this is important!).
2) Hold down the home, volume down and power buttons until you boot into download mode. Once you are prompted, push the volume up button to enter download mode completely.
3) Now, once in download mode, hold down the power and volume down buttons (not the home button this time) until you screen goes blank (your tablet MUST be plugged into your computer for this to work!). Release the buttons and you will see the battery symbol on your screen. Your tablet is now off - thank god.
4) To enter Recovery mode, hold the home, volume up and power buttons down until Recovery loads.
5) Restore your NANDROID backup.
Disaster averted.

Only works if the tablet is off. The key part of this little tutorial is just turning the tablet off when you are stuck in a loop. Once you are off you're golden.
I panicked yesterday because i can't exit download mode with a simple hold of the power key,

Lots of new roms. Make sure you check those firmware numbers before flashing folks!
When I was stuck on the Samsung logo for 20 minutes after installing this (beta version) rom a week or so back I did this:
1. Held down the Home, Power, Volume up and down buttons for about 10 seconds, not sure if you need all of them held down, but it seems it force restarts the tablet.
2. After the screen went black I immediately held down the Home, Power, and Volume down buttons to enter into download mode.
3. Flashed the latest XAR stock rom from SamMobile.
If anyone is testing a new kernel keep an eye on those temps. An app called CPUTemp has excellent monitoring. You want to be staying under 100c even when benchmarking.
Almost there but
I did everything you said but when i press the recovery combo nothing happens. It is as if there is no recovery!!!
Help plz.I am furstrated and angry!!!

Ok that all worked fine, but now that I got it turned off I can't get it to go any further than the charging icon is there a way to push files to it while it off? any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated
Same here. Can get into download mode but can't get into recovery. I've TWRP.
Ok made it into recovery.
Update:
I've now wiped Cache and Dalvik Cache and after rebooting it now says Android is upgrading / Starting apps.
Is this a good or a bad sign?

Thanks a lot. I just registered at xda developers in order to be able to reply and thank you. You saved my tabS 8.4 two weeks ago. However, I lost this thread since that time and I just found it again today after almost 2 hours of google searching. All that to show my appreciation for helping me to switch off my tablet having been stuck at the booting loop.
I would send you money if I knew how. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I had this problem with a Samsung Tab S I got at Costco, and returned it for a new one. That was about a year ago, and I was sure I would have to take it back again. You are uberawesome!
Kindly help me if u can ^_^

You have a couple of options.
1) Do as the guide says. It usually works.
2) If it didn't work, unplug your device and wait until it discharges the battery and goes off. Then charge it from USB, and turn it on with holding down Home+VolumeDown+Power buttons until DOwnload mode appears. Then press VolumeUp, and flash it from ODIN.

Bricked Head Unit RK3188 - Please Help

I recently upgraded to the eonon GA6151 and was trying to flash update_RK3188_1024x600.img " booroondook RK3188" , well I renamed the file wrong to dupate.img instead of update.img I started flashing it and it was too late before I realized. Now the unit will not boot up or go to recovery. I can reset it and see the buttons flash like it wants to go to recovery but nothing ever appears on the screen. Is there a way to adb into this unit? Can I put files on a card and have it auto install them? Any help would be appreciated.
FIXED IT!!
I fixed it using this method. I realized after the fact that this new unit is MTCD not MTCB.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67184851&postcount=50
I then had the error
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67309331&postcount=116
Which I fixed doing this
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67598154&postcount=319
I used the dupdate from here.
http://huifei.fs-fileserver.de/content/firmware/MTCD Custom ROMS - NOT FOR MTC-/RK3188/2017.02.21/
I loaded it onto the sdcard and the usb drive , the sdcard was created using upgrade disk tool and has to be 16gb or smaller fat 32. The usb drive just had a copy of the dupate.img file on the root of it.
To get into recovery on this unit do the below. http://www.eonon.com/Android-Car-GPS/Vehicle-Specific-GPS/GA6151.html
Press and Hold HOME AND POWER buttons
Press RESET while still holding HOME AND POWER
Let go of HOME AND POWER and then press HOME AND POWER down again and hold until the lights flash 3 times " is about 10 seconds to hold them "
Now Let Go of the HOME button then the POWER button the press the POWER button once "do not hold" and wait for it to boot into recovery.
This is the only method I found that reliably will get you into recovery. Make sure you use the GPS slot for any sd stuff you need to do in recovery.
Did you have to take the unit out of the car? I’ve made the bootable SD but nothing is happening.
