Best kernel for AOKP? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm running milestone 3 on my galaxy nexus with stock kernel and my battery life is terrible. Some help would be very appreciated. Maybe kernel ideas, or anything really.

I like leankernel, but that's just my preference. Franco, Trinity, Faux are all also solid kernels.
Each phone is slightly different so may handle different kernels slightly different; just like each person is different and may want different things out of a kernel. Your best bet is to try a few and see what works for you. Hopefully I have given you a good place to start.

Do me a favor. Run the MIUI 4.0 ROM for the day. You might not like it but that rom is excellent for me on battery. I wanna see if its a rom/kernel or a hardware battery problem thank you

Trinity is a badman kernel for AOKP, definitely worth a shout

Thanks for the replies guys! Does anyone mind providing links to downloads in the posts? I'd love that

Yep. Tuna is the entire Galaxy Nexus line.
Maguro is the GSM branch, Toro is the CDMA branch. Pick the one that fits your phone best.

Well thanks! Trinity for you is the best for battery life ? So far I'm watching it drop by the percent. 87-83 is a few mins. My nexus s with matr1x was where I did good. Idk about this GN though. So far the battery life is a downer.

I've had the best results with LeanKernel. Pair that up with the LeanKernel Tweaks script (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/17176-kerneltweaks-leankerneltweaks-v72-remastered) and it's golden. Fantastic performance, quite impressive battery life. And flawless stability. Haven't had any crashes or hangs since I got on this kernel.

I've got the 2000mah Samsung battery (phenomenal, by the way), so my battery life won't necessarily jive with what the stock battery provides. I use my phone a lot during the day but it still doesn't have any trouble making it from ~7AM - 10PM - and I usually finish it out with an hour or so of GTA3. I'm using the InteractiveX (v2) governor.
I'll try to remember to grab a picture of my battery usage graph after work today and see how it looks.

From your first post, it looks like your wifi stays on all the time? You may want to look at letting it be disabled when the screen is off. Settings --> Wifi --> (Menu) --> Advanced --> Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep. Unless you have a need for it to stay on and connected indefinitely, I'd suggest setting it to "Only when plugged in". Might cut down on some of your power drain.
Optionally, you can use the Power Saver feature in AOKP to automatically turn off your wifi and cellular data when the screen is off.

You're not going to be able to effectively evaluate a kernel in just a few hours. Stay with what you've got for at least a day before moving on.
Have you tried out BetterBatteryStats to try to identify what might be causing problems? If you have any apps that are preventing your device from getting into "deep sleep" that should tell you where to look.

WOW! what a drop!
What ROM, kernel and baseband are you using?
4G can't be the only reason for such big a drop!
Looks like the phone lost signal and never found it again... draining the battery by looking for the signal.

On 4g and no signal for two hours; it is actually amazing that there was still battery left.
Try a different radio?
Or, up the minimum frequency of the cpu to 700Mhz (in case you have an extreme variant of the 4.0.4 bug).
Hardly surprising. Something is keeping your phone awake, probable the radio trying to connect to a network for over 2 h. A phone trying to connect without success for 2 h gets pretty warm, even more so on 4G and drains your battery quickly.
Look at your signal its horrible! And 2 hours screen on time.. Your par for the course.

AOKP build 29, Franco Kernel milestone 2, and one of the hybrid radios(I believe 4.0.2 and 4.0.3).
The drop is definitely from the phone losing signal and searching for it that whole time, as evidenced by the network signal being red and the phone being awake.

Here, in my house, my signal averages -80 dbm. The screen wasn't on for more than a few minutes. The radio simply lost signal and kept the phone awake trying to find one.

Yeah. Since 4.0.5 is rumored to fix it, I'm holding out. I've had all sorts of issues with replacements, and my current phone is perfect except for the radios, which is hopefully just a software issue. Anyways, it's better now that I've wiped and everything, but it still drops. So I'm gonna try different basebands again.

Yeah my battery drains super fast when only on 3g. Nothing else running. When i try to actually use it like my last phone the thing drains like crazy. Tried both cm and stock. And diff kernels. I let my battery die and charge it fully over 5 times already. Another thing I noticed. I went to bed with 93% I wake up 8 hrs later. And its drained half way. Mind u its not even being used. I'm confused. the GSM g nex I used to have before used to last over 24 hours for me all the time no problem. If its the same phone. Why are the results so different. Its a huge difference. I find myself having to turn my phone off for a couple hours just so it can last thru my work day without dying on me.
Can it be the 3g that's making it drain so fast? What makes me believe this is when I am on 3g the top part of the back of the phone gets extremely hot. But when I'm on wifi. Its cooler than the other side of the pillow.

If a post drains 5%, you have issues or need to type faster, by about an hour.
Or how about some heavy Temple Run play while on LTE in a fringe area that drops it a lot? Standard battery overclocked to 1.35ghz at standard voltage. No undervolting at all.
would you mind sharing rom/kernel set up
BAMF Paradigm, kernel and rom.
The repos are on IMM76I, but current release is on IMM76D.
IMM76I is just a kernel change for GSM users anyway.
The kernel is nothing special and has no battery saving qualities over stock though.
I'm getting better battery life now somehow

Why don't you make a list of each rom you want to try, then take the time to flash each one and run each for about a week. Since battery life and performance is directly related to each users set up and personal style of use. This way in about 4 or 5 weeks you can actually make a determination on your own as to what is best for you.

In the middle of the graph, it goes from red all the way up to ~85%. The green bar below the graph also shows how long it's been charging which is DEFINITELY not 30 seconds.
best battery life is very subjective to the user. and remember that the display on this phone is power hungry to say the least. i hope that very soon all phones will come out with non removable batteries. people that need extra power can carry a portable power pack instead of an extra battery. and for those who complain about the longevity of the battery have obviously never used a phone with built in battery or done their research and are simply relying on that crutch of being able to swap the battery just because they can.
WOW...anyway....my point when i started this was that no one can tell you what works best for you...you have to figure that out on your own.

You can clearly see the green charging bar in the middle, not to mention the fact that battery graphs don't go up by themselves.

is in fact what I would do with this thread is to gather a bit 'of screen and then publish them on the start page so as to assist new users in selecting the ROM according to their needs, then of course every result will be based on usage of 'but if you can get many statistics can make an average of everyone!

Best Battery Life - ROM - Verizon

Anyone out there found the best ROM to have the best battery life?
I'm running AOKP toro JB build3 with Franco's kernal and I have the Verizon extended battery but the battery life still isn't all that great.
I use the phone quite a bit so the screen does kill it.
I've tried having the screen dimmed and clearing battery stats and all that stuff.
Is JB just a heavy user of battery? Is it better to go back to ICS?
Coming from a thunderbolt with an extended battery I had great battery life granted the battery was like a jet pack.
I'm sure I'm not the only out there as I've search other threads like this that brought me to AOKP JB and Franco's kernal.
Please let me know your thoughts, thank you kindly.

Thanks for the awesome reply and I will search this ROM for a toro Verizon version.
Some day well be exctiniced
Oh and that's HSDPA which uses significantly less battery than CDMA so your battery life is pointless.

I'm currently using AOKP with Franco.kernel nightly builds
The battery life is enough to get me through the day with moderate usage.
I've I'm using it heavily I usually have to charge it before the day is done.
I'd try CM9 or Bugless Beast with Lean kernel if you're trying to squeeze out every drop of battery life.
There are so many other ROMs for TORO that you just need to try them all and find out which ROM / kernel combo works best for you.

thats why i added in the edit, gsm devices get better battery life than the lte/cdma devices.

One does not. However,it is a question that no one can answer for you since there are far too many variables that are unique to each individual. There is a reason mods lock thee threads as soon as they see them, and that is because they are totally useless given the extreme variation from localities, different basebands, hardware variances even within the same production run, etc. Like the others have said, think of the pandas and don't be surprised if you see this thread locked in the very near future.

Though I don't see the point in recommending one, stock is pretty good. But i really just wanted to say that clearing battery stats does not improve battery life.

Hey buddy,
I used to own a Motorola Atrix 4G and flashed a JB ROM that was Frankenstein up with Gingerbread drivers. The battery size on that phone is virtually the same capacity as the one on the GNEX, but for some reason I was able to get 8 hrs screen on while connected to WIFI. Atrix is a dual core phone at 1Ghz processor and 1 GB RAM.
I would love to get at least half the screen on time I used to get on my old phone.

This.
It's somewhat irksome to see that some people still hold onto the misinformed notion that clearing battery stats is in any way shape or form going to have any impact on battery life or reported charge. It has about as much to do with either as what color table you rest your tablet on when not in use.

There IS a best ROM...the one that works for you.

Custom Kernel - What do you say?

Hi everyone, for a long time i see ppl claiming their phone last longer due to a custom kernel.
Normally i read they saying "i could never make my phone lasting with 2hs screen on or lasting for 2 days".
Anyway, its obviously that this will depend 100% what ppl do with their phone accordingly to apps, widgets, syncing, etc.
For me, normally i have around 3 and a half hour screen on and around 1 day and a half to 2 days.
I do use WiFi and 3G alot... browsing, gaming, texting, etc.
My point is that i belive ppl have a placebo effect. Custom kernel will give you faster response, OC ability and other advantages.
What do you guys say?
Attached are some screenshot from my 100% stock phone.

I just believe some of the little tweaks devs do to a custom kernel do make a difference.
I bag 4h30m on my gnex regularly.
Yea I totally agree that stock performs just as well in the battery life department. All I care about is having root.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Your battery life won't really get better than that. I really agree that there's often a placebo effect in switching roms/kernels, i only use a different kernel for color settings volume boost via Francos app. Stick with stock though I'd say, but of course it's always nice to try out kernels, despite the placebo effect.
Speaking of which though, I'm performing a real life test seeing which governors on my kernel work best for battery life. I simply switch then lol at my screen on time and see if it's improved, I'm assuming hotplugx will win, so we'll see. Interactive is still a great balanced on though.

It made a difference for me personally, because I wasn't getting very good battery life at all with the stock kernel. The other tweaks were also a pretty good bonus.
You're getting pretty great battery life as is though, I wouldn't worry too much about changing to a custom kernel if you're consistently getting numbers like those.
Thanks everybody for the feedback. I guess we are all at the same page.
Cheers

Battery life or not but performance of the phone definitely improves with custom kernels... Asphalt 7 use to lag a bit on stock JRO03C but after trying Franco kernel Milestone 6 no lag or reboots whatsoever..
In fact I have a placebo that custom kernels reduce battery life
Worth it for the small performance improvements alone but I do get a little better battery life.
Even a few percent better is better than nothing when you sit in a building with poor reception and your battery takes a hit from your phone having a low signal

Somehow i think the same! All my attemps with custom kernels drove me to less juice... but a hell of fastness..

Personally, I run trinity...
Mostly for it's colors but I did seem to go from 1 day to 2 days without charging after the switch (placebo...?)
My battery suddenly dropped from 15% to 0% on Milestone 6... Now I'm back on stock custom kernels are like 3rd party engine mods on a car..
I say Franco...

What mods have you done to your phone? I am running aokp build 4 with Franco kernel milestone 6 and I'm starting to see some good numbers too.

3+ hours screen on time, 12+ hours standby. I didn't think it was possible, my battery bad been draining pretty quickly. I think the key this time was that I was on WiFi all day.

no sync because i don't have the data to go syncing the whole day, auto brightness, 3g outside, wifi at home. Web browsing only, i don't play games on my phone, it's reserved for my computer.
Stock kernel, stock ROM. Turn off auto sync unless you are connected to a wifi hotspot. This will give you 3 hours screen on time and 12+ hours uptime. I have 3 email accounts set up, but they do not sync automatically. I manually check my email in the am, at lunch, and evening.
Stock kernel, unless you can't help but obsess about making your phone "fast". If you want fast, go into Development Options within Settings and turn off all animations, then install a launcher like Nova and turn animations to "faster than light".
I used to flash all kinds of mods on my phone and I realized that was ALL I did with my phone, tinker and troubleshoot it. I will only unlock and root my phone if we stop getting the latest OS updates. In the meantime, nothing is so wrong with the stock kernel and rom that should make you install Bob's OS. But you know, that's the beauty of Android. You can decide what you do with your phone. Hope my point of view makes you reconsider flashing any custom software.
