Is there a good alternative to the Gmail app? I need support for threaded view, and must be able to view messages when offline.
I have my personal Gmail account synced to the Gmail app, but I also want to see my company email (which uses Gmail as a back end) in an app. Don't want to mix business with private emails though.
At the moment I access company mail through the browser interface which isn't optimal.
Thanks!

Doesn't support threaded view.
U can use the default exchange mail app. Just setup as IMAP account.
Have tried a lot of different mail clients, but ended up using K9.
K9 do not have the most sexy GUI and I hate the icon even I know why devs keep on to it ... but honestly ... come on a head of a robot dog LOL
It have some smal bugs, but all together the best mail client I have tried until now.
I actually likes it so much that I contributed with a Danish translation.
BTW its open source and its possible to download latest version from http://code.google.com for free
Best mail client is Maildroid:

Thanks, have tried it and it's not bad. The threaded view is a bit cumbersome though, it groups messages correctly, but you need to exit each message to view the next instead of just scrolling down. Will keep it though.
Wish I could duplicate the Gmail app actually, or even better port the Mail app from iOS.

Why don you use default samsung email? It can be set as pop3 or imap. Can create multiple account on it.
Why don't you use Gmail?
If you have two Gmail accounts just add them both to your phone. Your mail won't mix, you'll just have to select the account you'll use in the upper left corner.
Or you can use the default Samsung app like anlimdy22 suggested.

Honestly, couldn't get that to work - just forced closed time and time again, and when it did work it couldn't verify the settings (the very same ones that K-9, Maildroid and the Gmail app could). Better apps are usually available externally

You're right, I assumed that it would mix emails from both account but it actually works well. Can't say I think the system to switch between accounts is the smoothest possible, but usage-wise it's still the best experience I've found. Thanks.

Yes, K-9 is powerful and feature-rich but I just prefer the Gmail app. The threaded view alone is worth it. Each to their own though!

Turn off word suggestion in Swype, it will help you to edit mail in default email app.
On the subject, the stock GMail app is the worst client I've ever seen. No multi touch is a PITA. The stock email app is good, still not the very best out there. Tried almost all the clients, Maildroid and all, yet to find one which suits my need, K9 was good, maybe I've to try it again.
Its really unbelievable that the client in iOS I used 3 years back was way better than all of these in Android!!!

Actually, I'd say the iOS Mail app is still better - where better, for me, means easier to use. Swipe-to-delete alone makes it a winner.
Yes, that's correct. Simplicity of using is way beyond everything.
Anyway started using K9 again, nice, but I couldn't get the idea of getting 'Message Sent' confirmation/notification! I guess it was present before or am I missing something...!

Hi,
I have already tested few mail app ( the stock one, the message 1.0.0024 coming from HTC I think and touchdown)
I am looking for a free app which would be able to :
* retrieve mail from an exchange server, Touchdown and message are good . The stock app give me error message half of the time.
* set an automatic synchronisation on the inbox and on a selected lists of subfolder. Touchdown is ggod for that
* handle the inbox tree in a non totally stupid way ( stock app is ordering by name !!! and I can't figure out the order from message 1.0.0024 ... maybe by date of creation or depending on the age of the captain). Touchdown is good for that
* display correctly the html mail with array ( only touchdown does it even if it doesn't allow to reply to nice html mail .... it will put the mail in attachment !!)
* be quick. Touchdown is extremely slow. Maybe it has to do with the lag of the SGSbut it's definitely slower than the 2 other app ( but better looking)
* nice to have : handle also different mail account like hotmail
For the moment, Touchdown is the best choice but I can use everyday a mail app which can take 20 sec to open a mail and an other 20 to delete it.
Any other idea ?
Thanks
try k-9 mail
Thanks for your post ... it makes me try one more time to setup K9 with exchange
And it seems to work.
At least I have some mail and part of my folder.
will check out their wiki to see how to configure the folder. It seems quite complicated but quite flexible.
For information I had a wrong webdav patch before
Ok so I sepnt at least an hour on the wiki and I can;t find why I can't see any subfolder !
I can see the inbox, the sent item, the contact, the calendar, the spam ... but no subfolder onf the inbox
Any idea ??
Thanks
i just read a bunch of reviews on it but no real "how-to", I'm buying my Samsung Vibrant tomorrow and I plan to get this app so I'll play around with it and see if I can get it setup right
Isnt K9 taking too much space and that too on the internal mem. needs an sd storage properties for mails/data.
Is there an app which does so.

Hi!
I would recommend Improved Email by mtwebster, I do believe it will be to your satisfaction, works with all kind of email, with it you could also accept/decline meeting invites from exchange, been using it for some time now and I'm very happy with it.
All other email apps I tried had problem with at least on of the account types; pop3, imap, gmail or exchange but not this one.

I am testing as well... i want to access company mails mainly (ok, contacts and calendar would be great too, but it's not essential) and three imap accounts. What i have tried so far:
- stock: works, but forces me to enter a security code (triggered from exchange server admin). Besides that, the stock app doesn't have any settings to change preferences on imap servers (folder location, etc.), therefore a no-go.
- k-9: i am using k-9 mail for all my imap accounts, works like a charm, i can point to the correct folders (for sent mails, spam, etc.), but i can't get exchange to work, although i tried various options from their wiki.
- touchdown: i tried this app as well, works very well. As i am using exchange 2007, it shows only new and unread mail, no old mail. Besides that and the fact that it seems to be rather slow (and expensive for this poor performance), it would be my first choice.
Any other suggestions (or hints, how to get k-9 exchange work or touchdown faster) would be really appreciated.
All the best,

I tried improved email. It's pretty good except that the email I sent via it is in 1 long line when viewed in the outlook client.
I don't know what you are doing but the stock email app has none of the problems you describe with outlook.
- I have never had an error downloading a message. I use Push for delivery. (other options have battery drain issues), so you don't have to "schedule" a sync since it is always in sync
- Messages are sorted in recieved order for me
- Images in HTML emails I have no issue with
In short - I think the stock email app works perfect with outlook, in fact it is better than the Microsoft Outlook mobile I used to have in WM 6.5.

You forgot the new security settings (which means, if your exchange admin turns on the "use a pin to secure your phone" feature). After i tried the stock mail app of froyo, i had to turn pin code on screen lock on. Besides that, the system never managed to sync more than 100 contacts - therefore the stock app personally is a no-go.

Dunno why but for some reasons, the stock email app will FC when opening certain emails, especially those with alot of frames.
On my side I use touchdown (and old version that i "found" ;-) on the net) because I need to have access to the GAL.
Had no issue with it except that it is slow.
If the stock mail app would have supported GAL i would not really had looked other mail app.
Doing so, if a free app would support GAL i would switch!
Email download is a pain ... is there any way I can speed this up? Used to be blazing fast on the WinMobile Omnia, how can it be that with Galaxy I have to wait for minutes? Thank you.
Take care,
BB
Same issue here...
You could use Gmail. It´s very fast, at least it feels much faster (downloading attachments and even open mails) than the pop/imap mail client of the SGS.
gmail seems slow. i hit refresh and it wont show me the new mail for almost a minute, even on a fast wifi connection. dunno whats up with that.
install the one click lag fix discussed in the rom development thread. or search market place for the "lagfix".
all slow issues in email resolved.
if ur having slow email after that... well i have no idea? my hotmail exchange works fine and quite speedy... except for the fact the default email app doesnt render html

Just delete all the accounts in the default email client.
And in gmail, settings-> e-mailnotification. Unmark it.
the fastest one is "Samsung Push Email & IM"
then comes Gmail from Google Apps
K9 is good, but it's slow compared to both of the above
Combination of "One click lad fix" and "k9" will all email issue.

I had been led to believe that ICS would finally give sub-folder support in MS Exchange (where you can see a combined view of all your email from all sub-folders and not have to go manually to each subfolder to read mail - also, if an email goes to a sub-folder, you don't get a new email notification). Touchdown has had it for ages.
And still not synchronising of Tasks!!!!
I was really hoping to run a "pure Android" phone but once again I have to use a third party app for email.

No tasks sync, still? Well, it's a good thing GoTasks is free and works just like a real Google app (i.e. Google Tasks shows up for your google account under accounts & sync).
Good thing Nitrodesk Touchdown is a good app. I've been using it for about 2 years on my phone (N1) and about a year on my tablet (Xoom). Is worth the money if you need good Exchange support. I need it for work so it was a no-brainer a couple years back. I don't know if Google's email client will ever be as good. It seems like Google's concentration is on improving the Gmail application. I don't mind because other than work I use Gmail a lot. I have Touchdown for Exchange and don't care if it is a Google app or not.

When people say "pure Android" they mean without motoblur/sense/touchwiz. If you discounted 3rd party apps that would be ridiculous as that's what Android is all about, customization. I get what you mean, not having to add email apps or messaging apps or a camera app... the idea is similar, but a bit silly.
Enhanced Email works well. When my company first moved to Android, a few were pissed about the lack of Tasks. Email, Calendar, and Contacts is all I need and Android does that nicely.
But for a really good exchange app, I suggest TouchDown. There is also another one that is relatively new but looks like it is a pretty heavy email app.

Yes you are right. What I mean is not having to duplicate system apps with third party apps. I never know if it is safe to disable the Android stock email (and risk disruption to my email) or not and if I don't, whether I am wasting battery on having both running in the background.

Everybody says touchdown, but touchdown is not linked to phone's contacts, calenders etc. etc.
There is no sense for me in using touchdown, when I then have to deal with 2 calenders, 2 contact databases etc.
When I add a contact in touchdown, it does not put this contact to the phone's contacts. When I put something into my agenda, it doesn't put it the phone's agenda.
ICS ms Exchange support is really disappointing.
The search function works only online with data connection and content search only, it is not possible to search by sender, by subject etc.
Off line e-mail searching is still missing.
As long as I have to use MS Windows, MS exchange, MS office etc. Sooner or later I will have to go back to Windows phone, as I promised myself never to own an I-phone.
Or is it just me? Every email I open that has pictures or graphics I have to scroll to the bottom and click on "Load More Details".
I really like the email in the Nexus Roms or the CMxx Roms - they ask at the TOP if you want to show pictures and then if you want them to be shown all the time. That is what I would like to have. Any idea where/how one could accomplish this?
I have tried virtually all of the email clients in the Play Store and really do not care for them fro one reason or another. I even have $16-17 invested in a few of them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ted
I purposely use Gmail for everything. Just goes hand in hand with android. I actually freeze email and exchange apk.
Have you tried enhanced email from market?

If you use Gmail, you can just press "show pictures" at the top if it doesn't show them by default. It will remember your preference for that person.
Gmail also has a better theme and is generally better than than most, if not all, email clients.
If you don't use a google account for email, I believe you can set google up so it receives email from a certain address and you can send outgoing email from that address.
My biggest complaint is that Samsung put all of the controls (reply, forward, etc) at the top of the screen which makes one hand operation a challenge. I have big hands and still have trouble reaching the controls. I replaced Samsung email/exchange with the stock ICS versions on my E4GT for the same reason. I might do the same on this one as soon as I flash a custom ROM.

Gmail is really good especially since its push email to our phones but it lacks the ability to embed images which i have to use the stock email app for work account anyways and id rather be able to embed images than have push. Thats just my preference.
For years I've used Gmail as my primary email app. And lately it seems worse than ever. Emails seem shower then normal, it will notify me even when the emails are syncing (annoying), and then takes a long time send. And now since their latest update, I have 2 apps for Gmail in my tray. What email app do others use I'm curious.

This question is as old as Android..
I think I have been on all of them, free and paid. There isn't one that has no issues. All of them has great features. Some of them have better security, and the bottom line is, they are all not bad.
Now days, surprisingly, I'm back to the Samsung built in email app. Even my Gmail is on it ..

Do you have any issues such as a duplicate icon?

, no just one
I think Nine is the best (check Play). It's not free but there's a trial you can test. Very flexible, great features, and fast. I have no connection to the dev (s) - just a happy user.

Samsung email on the device is tolerable. I have messed with Newton and Spark as well. They all have their +/-, but I miss inbox.

I use gmail.
No issues here. Works fine.
Stock and Outlook for company mail.
The best one is AquaMail

Tons of options. Amazing app.
BlueMail is the best Gmail replacement will never go back
I went from MailDroid (pro) over to Outlook. I loved maildroid, but the UI is/was very overdue for an update. Outlook has been a great replacement, and it integrates well with my PCs.
I'm using Spike email. It's very different. You can have the email format appear as a text thread. Also, I really love the oled black theme. Before this, I used Spark. And before that I enjoyed Bluemail.
I use Bluemail.
I have about 7 different email addresses and some are not Gmail accounts.
Bluemail has an export accounts option so when I switch devices I don't have to re enter all the addresses on the new phone.
Aquamail for me too

I agree, although at the present I am using default email app, I agree that nine mail is perhaps the best with lots of personalisation and works well with exchange mail, what is an important feature for me

This! Nine is by far the best and most flexible email app out there. Same here btw, just a happy user ?
I'm using Fairmail, it comes with very good privacy roles and features and has cool features.
I tried Spark when it came out bit went back to Gmail. Then saw Spark made some updates and went back to it and I don't think I will use another app again. Now that it has dark mode and you can create folders. It is the closest thing to Inbox (RIP).
