Wifi Tether issues - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi guys! I'm back again with more questions..
So, my phone is rooted and running Blazer 3.8.
I started off using the built in Sprint Hotspot, which works wonderfully, but uses up way too much power and gets way too hot while running. So, I decided to go to the Wireless tether app I used on my old EVO.
however, All of the newer versions (beta 3.0 and above) fail to work, period. At all.
The older versions work, however they fail to work when using Encryption of any form. (all of them force me to use WEP and I would like to use WPSK)
Also, i'm unable set it to make itself into a true WiFi network, instead it's an AdHoc network.
How can I fix these issues?
Thanks!
~Saph

The solution is to use the sprint app, not sure what Samsung does to their phones...

There must be some way to get the WiFi tether app to work properly, right?
Sprint hotspot drains power, even while plugged into the wall..

Check to make sure you don't have one of those "Green" cables. (The stock Samsung cable is one of those I believe).
You might want to re-flash the rom too, I use this almost daily and see very little power drain.

That sounds pretty normal to me. Anyway, back when I was stock rooted the wireless tether app didn't work for me either. I ended up using an application called OpenGarden which worked pretty well. Now that I'm on Blazer, I use the Sprint Hotspot app and it doesn't drain a tremendous amount of power.

Question about hotspot hack

I know I cant install the deodexed hacked hotspot on my stock ROM, but would it be possible for me to pull the hacked hotspot app out of one of strongsteve's odexed ROMs and install it? Anybody try it?

If you can fix the browser lag what we were getting that would be great.
Thanks for digging that up for me. Don't think I'm gonna try it though, don't want to deal with the browser lag. Wireless Tether (the app) works for me, it just keeps broadcasting an SSID even after I stop tethering. Gotta reboot to stop it. I'll put up with that for now until a better solution comes out.

Which Wifi tether app are you using? I have several good ones. You are rooted stock right?.... goes to read back posts...full stock or rooted MetalHead? If you are rooted stock I have Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 6, beta 99, and beta 100. When the network is saturated, sometimes it works better than my paid for 4g Hotspot

I'm rooted stock w/cwm. I'm using wireless tether 3.1 beta 6. I've tried a couple other ones and even tried barnacle, all with the same results. They all work, but they all keep broadcasting an SSID (no data though) until reboot.

Tether/Hotspot workarounds (AT&T)

Enabling Hotspot on ATT phones used to be as easy as freezing tether manager via Titanium Backup.
It seems with the GS3 on stock ICS this isn't enough...
I've also tried Wifi Tether Manager but still the sharing evades me.
A few threads mention the issue but I'd like to condense the issue to one place.
Any success stories or proven processes?

So I reserved the first reply so I could summarize developments and solutions in this post. Here are the worthy options found so far.

FoxFi seems to have been the solution for me (AT&T customer running a GS3). I was able to create a Wifi Hotspot and connect my laptop plus another Android phone, then surf the net on all 3 devices at the same time! I didn't clock the speed but it seemed to be at least a decent broadband response.
FoxFi doesn't require any significant tweaking, like Wifi Tether does.
I had a rather at length discussion today with advanced tech support at Samsung. He told me AT&T requested data traffic to be manipulated so tethering wasn't possible. He was trying to assure me it was VERIZON who encrypted the bootloader, and he used AT&T as the example of what their customers asked for from them.
How true it is, is another issue all together.
why would you reserve a post in a "question" thread?
anyways, i hate "wifi" tethering since the phone gets extremely hot. and it drains the battery quickly and connection isn't as solid. so this is why i prefer a "wired" tether. i just carry my usb wire around with me and i plug it into my computer when i need to tether. I downloaded "Tether" app from www.clockworkmod.com which let's you tether using a wired connection. it works completely fine for me. I even have Tasker set up to when I plug my phone into my PC, my phone automatically opens the Tether app and loads it waiting for me to "accept". if i don't wanna tether, i simply hit "Home" or "Back". simple as that.
Benefits to wired tether are:
phone doesn't get hot
battery doesn't die. in fact, it charges the phone
connection is solid
secured connection
only user using it

The Clockworkmod Tether app you referenced is not available for my GS3. Play only allows it to download on one of my 5 android models.
Can you confirm that you are using it with a GS3 running stock ICS?
what? dude just go to www.clockworkmod.com and all the info is there. or just download it from here:

FoxFi
I've wifi-tethered, unrooted, with FoxFi with no issues.
I've also tethered with a USB cable just fine using PDANet on the phone with the PDANet Windows application (again unrooted).
No issues.

I'm assuming you're using an AT&T GSIII? If so, how did you manage to get FoxFi on it? Apparently AT&T is now blocking it from the Play Store along with Sprint. I can't install it from the web, either...my devices are grayed out and it says it's not available on my carrier.
I'd rather not root my GSIII yet and FoxFi sounds like just the ticket.

Yes, at&t ... Not sure what to tell you, it installed fine for me and when I login via the web Play Store, it says it's compatible with all my devices.
Maybe the apk is available somewhere. Since at&t didn't block unknown sources, you should be able to install it.
So is there a safe way to tether natively (wired or wireless)? May it be loading another rom (AOKP or AOSP). I have no problem using a vpn on the pc side.
If I use foxfi or another workaround from the stock touchwiz will AT&T be able to track my tethering and shut down my unlimited plan? It would be useful to use tethering but I don't want to risk them finding it. If I root and use another method will they be able to find out?

I also figured out how to get FoxFi back in the market.
First remove your SIM Card and reboot. Connct over WiFi only.
Go to application settings and Clear Data from both "Google Framework Services" and "Play Store"
Reboot
Go back to the Play Store and you should see FoxFi now. If for some reason you get a cannot connect message in the Play store, go back and clear your data for the Play store again and try again.
AT&T must have just blocked FoxFi from the Play Store within the last day... I got it from the Play Store on Friday 7/13.
Is it permissible to post the .apk here?
I just upgraded to an S3 on AT&T yesterday and was able to pick up FoxFi. I am able to tether the device but the speeds are super slow.

anyone figured out free tethering on tmobile s3? (tethering for root just doesnt work

I've tried lots of threads that said the only way to get free tethering on the s3 is (tmovile) is by rooting then installing "root users tethering" application.
I followed instructions and used "generic ICS" mode - this worked for my first couple attempts at connecting to tmobile tethering... but now it just doesn't work at all - and only in about 1 in ten time it says it is in tether mode is there ever even a wifi signal to pick up - and when it does pick up most of the time now it wont connect (says internet connection problem on PC)
are there any roms that offer this functionality as standard? or any other foolproof apps?
thanks
I'm rooted on stock and have found no working method.

You must choose the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) option in profile. It will then work great.

Is there a way to use the native tetherkng option yet? On the S2, it was as easy as freezing TetheringProvisions app. Any luck for the S3?
I use wifi tether for root users under generic ics profile and it works fine for me. I have to restart the phone each time i use it though, not sure why.

Yes, it is USB. I've been using it since I had the Mytouch 3G. I don't see a need in using WiFi tether unless you are sharing it with other people or using a Tablet. If you are using a PC then I don't see why you wouldn't want to use USB tethering since it doesn't use any battery power.
Rooted using wifi tether and works no problems. Sometimes i do need to restart wifi tether to get the signal. I am using galaxy nexus (gsm) as the profile.
Mine works. Here's a the tutorial.

i believe all the carriers make you pay to use the native wifi tethering.. I use foxfi and it seems to work fine for me. it's on the play store.
TMO gave me free tethering but it would only work with the TMO tethering app (throttled), not with any other app. After I rooted the other apps worked fine and the root tether app is much faster then the TMO app.
Cool. Thanks guys
ClockWorkMod
First, you will need to download the ClockWorkMod tethering app.
Then, you will need to download the driver for your PC. You can download the driver onto your phone open the file on your PC by connecting your phone to the USB. It pretty much walks you through everything to get started. Takes less than ten minutes and voila, you're online. I searched forever to find this and just discovered it. Now all I need is hotspot so I can use this with my Chromebook. Here is the link to download the driver clockworkmod.com/tether/drivers
Just click Samsung drivers and it will download.
It works great. The only thing that I have noticed that may be a problem is that I got kicked off once. I just started using it so I'm not sure if it happens often, but all I had to do to get it back on was turn off the app on my phone, and on my PC then turn it on from my phone and then click start on my PC.
It's only a trial version, but the full version can be purchased directly from the app once the trial runs out for $4.99. Hope this helps! Enjoy!
Samsung galaxy S3 T-mobile Nonrooted
Ok I am new to tethering since I have always used Comcast....
I have the unlimited data plan from Tmo.... Unlimited data plan comes with 500mb of free tether.... soon enough it will run out... I need to make sure my tether works AND make sure if I do these methods they won't find out I'm tethering....
I just wanted to clarify my question...
So how do I go about this....? as of now my phone is not rooted but it will be if need be....
Everything online is telling me to root my phone and use 30934983458 different apps... if anyone is kind enough can someone explain please how this process works (I am not a noob with phones just with tethering)

[Q] Does T-Mobile charge me for using a wireless hotspot?

Hi guys im from the Skyrocket section, but that's AT&T, so I came here.
I was wondering since I know every ROM has a built in hotspot setting if you go to settings > More > And under the Mobile Networks
I don't have the Mobile Hotspot built into my plan so Im just wondering if I use it will I get charged the $15/month?
no you wont get charged, instead you will get redirected to the Tmobile site that trys to sell it too you. For some reason i kept getting that same message using alot of roms until I switched to the last side kick's kannged version of liquid smooth, now i can tether with no problems.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
I think it depends on the rom you're running. Most custom roms, you can tether without getting charged right? I know I've USB tethered just fine. On liquidsmooth I did wireless tether without a problem too.

With mine on any ROM I'm able to use up to 2GB data per month on tether and then I get the redirect.
Cool, I never use that much so I never run into that problem. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind too.
hotspot
do you guys have to freeze anything using titanium backup pro or anything of that sort? or do you just go straight into the tethering?
If you delete tetheringprovisions.apk you'll get free tethering.

[SOLVED] Sprint USB Tethering

I know it's not wifi tethering, but hey this is a bandaid for me. Clockwork Mod Tether works perfect, regardless of if the play store says it's compatible.

I think I tried that one and got the usual error (in stock form). Give it a whirl and let us know though. I just started going down the list installing a bunch of tethering apps until I found one or a few that worked.

Mine connect and works fine.... But then it will randomly disconnect and I have to reconnect again.
Not sure what is going on. Did this with this and a separate usb tethering app.

I'm going to answer my own question and confirm that it still works post-update. I switched over to using the Wifi/USB Tether hack for a while, but am now back to using CWM Tether. In strong signal areas the hack works fantastic, but I find that out in the country with one bar it's very iffy. Perhaps this is an issue of the phone going in and out of data service and the connection not being restored gracefully when that happens? Whatever the case, CWM doesn't seem to have this same problem and maintains a fairly continuous connection without me having to restart my phone repeatedly.
