So are you or are you not able to boot in to recovery? Kinda confused. You said that you tried but no luck but then you rebooted and did a clear storage. So were you able to boot in to recovery the second time? If you can, do a full wipe and try flashing a different rom. You can download one to your PC, boot in to recovery, enable the usb drive, push the file to your phone and flash.
Ummm sorry for the confusion .... I'm talking about I held the volume down and power button to get to the screen I believe it's "bootloader" and tried to select recovery so maybe I can do a backup to wen it previously worked but no luck cause the phone wasnt reading the sd card with the backup on it! So I went back to the "bootloader" and did a "clear storage" it worked but the phone took forever to come on.... I did that about 2 times when the phone wouldnt boot pass the htc screen but now it no lingers works doing that! And to answer you guys question no I'm not able to boot in recovery just to bootloader with the options
Fast boot
Recovery
Clear storage
Reboot
USB hboot
If you guys are still confused let me know I will explain further more the phone will not access recovery at All!
As asked... what recovery did you load? Amon_RA or CWM? Also, what HW version do you have?
O I'm very sorry.... CMW
Hw info:
Android version 2.3.4
Baseband version 2.15.00.0808
Kernel version: [email protected] #1 Sat apr 30 04:36:42 edt 2011
Build number: MIUIAndroid 7.29
And to answer your previous question I don't know how to install a new recovery thru hboot .... I hope this helps you
If you can get to your sd card via a card reader to load a new recovery, then follow the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. Otherwise, try this first to see if you can at least get sd access again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695243
Ok will try how do I get a card reader?
If you are on a laptop, most recent ones will have a slot for it and may even have the dock/reader to place it in. You can also get an external one that connects via USB at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack. Basically anywhere that sells SD cards. Usually around the camera section. You can also check tigerdirect.com or newegg.com if you can wait to receive it via mail. They usually have bargains that you can take advantage of. If this is your primary phone, then go to a store to get one so you can get your phone working.
Or if you can't get your hands on a card reader, you could stick your card in a different phone (old phone, friends phone, neighbors phone, phone at sprint store, whatever). Then download amonRa recovery from xda (download the PC36IMG version of it). Move it to the root of SD card (i.e. NOT in any folder) using some sort of file explorer on the borrowed phone.
Then put card back into your Evo, boot into bootloader (using power and volume down method you used earlier).
Bootloader should scan your card, find the PC36IMG, and ask if you want to do the update.
Hope this helps.

Ok thank you I'm going to do it in the morning will this still work for me even thou my phone won't read my sd card??
Your hboot/bootloader should still read your SD card fine. Unique problem, but should read fine. You remember which hboot version you have?
sent from AOKP heaven
No but I'll find out of you tell me how to
Well, not really necessary to know, unless you're trying to use some fastboot commands. But, you said you CAN still get into bootloader by holding volume and pressing power, right? Once in bootloader, it will say your hboot info in upper left corner.
In any case, follow the above info about getting recovery as a PC36IMG onto your SD somehow, and boot into bootloader. Good luck. Report back.

So this past weekend, I got a notification on my phone telling me that there was a software update available.
I have a rooted stock 2.2 rom running on my phone, and about two weeks ago my phone stopped reading/mounting my SD card. I tried the SD card fix posted on here, but it didn't do anything for me.
So when I got this notification I figured I'd install it, lose root, and get my SD card back. (I only wanted root so I could use the mobile hotspot feature, which I don't use that much anymore so I don't care about having root)
So I download and install the update, and my phone reboots and now I'm stuck on the bootloader screen. I've tried to get into recovery, but each time I do that I'm presented with the image of the phone with the red exclamation mark.
So once I get that screen, I pressed the up volume key and the power button, then it tells me:
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Then I get a blue menu (it says: Android system recovery <3e>) up top and presents me with 4 options:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
I've tried all options. When I tried to apply the update.zip, it tries multiple times to access it, but keeps saying it can't mount the SDcard.
this is the message I get:
E:Reading package...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid argument)
I've wiped the data/factory reset... doesn't work.
tried wiping cache partition... don't work.
I'm going to try another SD card later, maybe that will help. What files should I put on it?
Dunno if this will help, but on the bootloader screen (top) it says:
supersonic evt2-3 ship s-on
hboot-0.97.0000
touch panel-atmel224_16ab
radio-2.15.00.09.01

If anyone can shed some light into what the hell is wrong with my phone, I would appreciate it greatly.
Get a new SD card. Mine had the same problem and sprint gave me a new one. Put the files you need on the SD card directly from your computer using an adapter. As for the specific files you need I'll stand aside for someone with more experience.
DO NOT take your phone into sprint as it is. May be a "duh" statement but I want to be sure you know that.

Why are you telling him not take the phone in to Sprint? It seems to me like he has the stock hboot and it says "s" is off, so I don't see what the problem is. There is nothing there that would indicate the phone has been rooted, so they would have no reason to say the warranty is voided. If he accepted an OTA update, he obviously doesn't have root, so even if they do get the phone to turn on, it's a non-issue.
OP: It sounds like a defective SD card. If you put a pc36img.zip file on the SD card and the phone cannot read it from the menu you are describing, and you previously tried the SD card fix to no avail, then try a different SD card. Maybe you can ask someone to lend you one off of their phone? If so, you can place an RUU on the card that is lent to you, and all the files you need for the phone to operate will be there. Just find a thread describing how to unroot your phone, follow the steps, and you should be good to go.
Did you try putting the SD card in the adapter and seeing if a computer will read it?

I can't use the adapter cause I don't have a card reader. I've always used my phone to write files to the SD cards.
But I will try what you suggested. I found the exact update I was trying to download, So I'll put that on the SD card and try and flash it on the phone.
I can't post links yet (still noob status) so the title of the link on here:
OTA_Supersonic_3.29.651.5 - just the OTA update zip file
praying this works...
OP, I'm in the same situation. Any luck yet?
I rooted my stock HTC Desire with unrevoked3. The operation went smoothly but after the last restart, phone won't switch on. It gets stuck on the white HTC screen.
What can I do now?
You can boot into recovery. Turn phone off, hold vol down + power button. When it's finished checking, select recovery with vol keys and power button to select. From there you can mount USB and flash a new rom if you want.
Yes, I can do recovery, and I had my old nandroid image on the card which I restored, but it didn't change a thing.
Flash a rom real quick and see if that works. BTW, when you go to bootloader, what is your PVT? Just curious.
How can I flash it if I can't turn the phone on normally?
PVT 4 SHIP S-ON
Because you use your recovery to mount USB then you transfer a rom across. Then you flash that rom you transferred to your SD card.
I take it you have ClockworkMod 2.5.0.7 or something along those lines? If so, you kind of need Amon_RA recovery because of your PVT.

Your better off turning phone off, take out your sd card and insert into pc. place your downloaded rom onto sd card and then boot back into recovery and try install from sd card. try that

Yeah, in the ideal world I would be able to find my microSD-SD converter.
Seriously now? It's in mounts and storage. In the real world, if it's in your phone, it stays in your phone. No one knows how to "do things themselves" these days.
And yes, some people do have problems with CWM with PVT4 and so Amon_RA is a lot better since it is more compatible with it.

emmm.....do you know that there is thing called card reader for your PC or laptops? Take the microSD card out of your phone, stick it in the converter and put it in the card reader then connect the card reader to your computer...heeelllooooo
I wouldn't even have rooted my phone without knowing that.

Helloooo... I've already said I lost my converter. I think we experienced some serious brake down of communication but it is all sorted now.
I flashed newest CyanogenMod and it boots up but when I then go back into recovery and restore my nandroid backup from CyanogenMod beta, it freezes at the HTC screen again.
I had loads of important stuff in there and would really like to restore this backup?
Can't believe I am going to post this link

Read all of it before you come back and post here.
BTW, in recovery > mounts and storage > mount usb.... was that so hard?

I flashed a custom room and the phone works, but freezes on HTC boot screen again if I restore my nandroid backup.
EDIT:
I got it to work, finally. I flashed new CyanogenMod 7, then restored nandroid backup from CM7 beta, then flashed CM7 full again and voila - it boots and everything seems to be there.
Thanks.
Hey guys....first off, you guys all do great work as this is the first question I've needed to ask that I couldn't find the answers for....so my problem is I've been rooted for the last 5 months and I was making a NANDROID back up in recovery, went to reboot the phone and got the dreaded 5-vibrate, green LED error. I've searched all over and see that there really is no fix for that. My replacement is already here and I'm sending the old one back tomorrow. Problem is, the phone can't access the SD card so I can't put S-On......in hboot the phone does say S-on but I can boot it up if its plugged in through USB (and of course OMFGB boots up).
I've looked through these forums and found some similar results for unrooting without an SD card, but nothing seems to work. My laptop doesn't detect internal storage or SD card.......so do I just have to hope the factory doesn't get the phone to boot (if they dont try with it plugged in it won't)? Or is there some way you could download a file from the phone browser that could be applied??
Thanks in advance
To get s-on you could try using z4root. It has an unroot option
Sent from my Incredible using XDA Premium App
Can you not download the windows installer of the stock ROM? The RUU can be found here and just hook your phone up via USB cable and load it up
I don't think you need an SD card for that.
Worth a shot
Well the problem was my computer wouldn't recognize the phone either, would just say something like "qualcomm device" then would error out after a few seconds. Once my replacement got here I put the stock ROM on the SD card and tried again with the defective phone and, miraculously, it unrooted........thanks for your advice!
my friend was completly mindless. he used kernal manger to flash the cyanogenmod kernal to his phone. the phone is s-on and nothing works except the phone itself, it does not power properly it needs battery pull and plug ins to get it to start or it just vibrates 5x then freezes. it also does not recognize the sd OR pc, i cant get to it on the pc with correct drivers...its like its not there.
so i went to fix it for him and could not ruu due to the not seeing the device, and couldnt flash anything off the sd due to the sd being not recognized. he told me he had a failed unrevoked session and it put superuser on and cwm on. i CAN get to the hboot screen and when i go into recovery i get into cwm but nothing at all works...
i never saw a brick like this. i would like to call it a live brick dead lol
is it dead?

SD card not working? Do you have a card reader or another phone to put it in and format with? See if it is even recognized by anything else other than the phone.
I'm not sure but isn't an SD card necessary for CWM recovery to work?

Try some of the solutions above and let us know. Re-rooting or putting the RUU found here http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=108 on the SD card
My thoughts are the only fix i can see working would be to flash the RUU in hboot not cwm and then root it properly. That should work provided you can get it to read the sd card in hboot
SD card must be fat 32
the ruu you download must be named "PB31IMG.zip" the case is important it must be in all uppercase
and what you will do is put it on the sdcard using a card reader and your pc then put it in the phone then go into hboot it should read the card find the image and ask you if you wish to flash this. You should if it goes well have a stock phone... You can then run unrevoked again to root it this time...
can not access the sd card at all... sd card works fine in my computer... not mountable... can't figure it out...
Ok so baisically my retard side came out last night and i accidently installed electricfire theme from rom manager, when my phone booted it was full of errors so i thought i would put my phone in recovery and reset/clear data etc. Didnt work ofcourse, so i booted into cw recovery to restore my nandroid backup, then notice i had version 5.0.2.8 and not .6 so whenever i try to restore my backup it will stop at certain points in the middle of the restore and reboot then enter boot loop, I can still get to hboot and recovery though. So then i was going to try and put the stock rom zip on my sd card to flash through recovery but my computer wont recognize my phone as a storage disk to put the zipped file on the sd card.. But my computer does recognize that my phone is plugged in when in hboot, but a prompt pops up asking to install driver software etc.... Posting a thread was the last thing i wanted to do but i couldn't seem to find the same problem on the fourms. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

Take the sd card out of the phone. In a card reader, from your computer, copy the cwm 5.0.2.6 file ( www.redmondpie.com/how-to-install-f...overy-on-supported-android-devices-root-only/) the root of your sd card (it should be a PG76IMG.ZIP file). Put the card back in your phone. Take the battery out for about 5 seconds. Put the battery back. Hold the volume down button then press and release the power button. The phone will go on, let it do its thing, it's installing cwm. When it's done, take the battery out again, then take the sd card out. Put it in the pc's card reader and delete the PG76IMG.zip file. Make sure you do this, otherwise it won't work. Put the card back in the phone, also the battery. Now hold the volume down button and press and release the power button. It will look for the PG76IMG.zip file, but it won't find it. When it finishes doing its thing, press the volume down button to where it says recovery, then press the power button and you should now boot into recovery. From here, restore your backup, and you should be good to go. Let this be a lesson and make sure you research and understand what you are doing BEFORE doing it......
Thank you for the reply, ill have to get a card reader then.. haha thank you much appreciated.
I was finally able to get a card reader today.. Worked perfectly. thank you again, much appreciated.
