ey everyone,
My bootloader is current unlocked, and I'm thinking of rooting (using Wugs toolkit) for the sole purpose of flashing the 4.0.4 update. But before I do, I have some questions that I'm hoping you can help with. Keep in mind that I am VERY unfamiliar with rooting/AOSP/CWM/etc, but I did previously root using Wug's toolkit. But I read somewhere that you can't receive OTA updates if rooted, so I did Wug's "flash back to stock". To my horrible dismay, this completely wiped/rest my device.
1. If I root again using Wug's toolkit, is there a way to UNroot that will not wipe/reset my phone?
2. If, once rooted, I flash the 4.0.4 update, does this wipe/reset my device in any way?
3. If, once the official 4.0.4 OTA comes out from VZW, what is the process to receive that official version from VZW? And, will any of this process involve wipe/reset of my phone? (and I don't mean another flash from the developer community)
4. There are so may threads, and the threads are so large, that I can't determine what is the best method to flash the 4.0.4 update. Does anyone have a direct link to such method (without having to read through 47,830 posts?
As you can tell, I don't want to do anything that will wipe/reset my phone. I don't want any of my data to be disrupted, and I don't want my home screens reset either. Basically looking to update to 4.0.4 the same way that it would be done if VZW pushed it out to my phone (i.e. No need to re-setup my phone).

So forget it. Unlocking your bootloader will do a full reset of the phone.
Also, there is absolutely no need to root the phone to flash custom ROMs (rooting is not the same as unlocking !)
Do you have the CDMA or GSM version of the phone ? If you have the CDMA, you can flash the leaked 4.0.4 without unlocking
Assuming your bootloader is unlocked...
Download the 4.0.4 Update, rename the file to update.zip, and put it on your phone's SD folder.
h
Download and install the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit
-Connect your phone to your PC
-Boot into fastboot mode
-Start up the toolkit
-Select your phone model (probably Android 4.0.2)
-Select "Boot into CWM without permanently flashing"
-Select Boot CWM Recovery ( I used the touch version)
-You should see some activity on your phone right away
-Once CWM is up and running, just select "Install from update.zip"
-Wait a few minutes.
-Enjoy
(This method did not delete any data or change any settings)

Unlocking the bootloader will definitely wipe your phone, but he said his bootloader is already unlocked.
To install the update, your phone doesn't require root, but it does require an unlocked bootloader.

Maybe they all do exactly the same?
Unlocking wipes phone, rooting comes after..Copy anything from sd card you want to save to pc. Use mskip's toolkit and read all instructions and you will be fine. Google saves all your apps in market and contacts will sync when you sign into google.
Hope this helps.
Use my guide.
Stickied above...and linked in my sig.
But yes, it will wipe your data.
You could, however, use the backup method detailed in my guide.
DON'T use these damn toolkits...
If you someday soft brick your phone (and if you tinker...you will, I promise) you're going to want to know how to utilize the resources you needed to root it manually...and if you used a toolkit, you'll be far worse off as you won't even know if adb/fastboot are set up properly...and will cause a huge barrier of troubleshooting your problems.
I personally promise...
Do it the manual way...and you'll end up with a rooted phone in an hour.
It's not hard.
I also root my nexus without using those tool kits (seems don't have any when I got my nexus)
you may follow Jubakuba's guide, it's safe and not that hard, I root my nexus within 30mins (not following Jubakuba's guide, but almost the same)

X3. I used the toolkit for the drivers when I couldn't get mine properly installed. Otherwise, everything else was done in the command prompt with ADB and Fastboot. Very simple and you'll learn what these toolkits are doing behind the scenes so you can better troubleshoot later.
I also rooted my Nexus one without tool kits, it's very easy!

If your bootloader is locked, and you are running 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, you can root using this method.
If you want, you can then install ROM Manager from the market and do a backup. Then copy that backup off your device, and proceed to unlock your bootloader (which will wipe) if you want, but then you can restore your backup, and you will have all your data and an unlocked bootloader.
Hi,
I have my bootloader unlocked at the moment after the upgrade to 4.0.4 using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391881
So I understand that rooting won't erase my phone. Right?
To root I need (I'm skipping blablabla and leaving just the important):
1) fastboot reboot-bootloader
2) fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-toro.img
3) select the "Recovery Mode" option again on your phone.
You should get a new recovery menu here. Select "install zip from sd card" and "choose zip from sd card."
Find the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
4) find "Rom Manager" from the market. (The free version is fine.) Use the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" option
I'm rooted permanently without loosing my data (as I already have bootloader unlocked), right?

Correct.
Just remember that un-locking/locking DOES reset your SD.
But as you said, you're already unlocked. So you're good!
Edit:
PLEASE let me know if that superuser.zip works for you, btw.
I had to update the OP recently to fix 4.0.4 users not being able to root...but wanted the same file to also root us CDMA users and GSM users who aren't on 4.0.4.
If that zip doesn't work...you simply won't have root access. Nothing bad will happen.
Let me know if that happens though (I can't test a 4.0.4 gsm phone, obviously) and I'll get you a .zip that I KNOW works for 4.0.4 users.
Quick question: does the SuperUser app developer has his homepage? Who's the author of that?
Now I understand that there're tons of superuser.apk modifications in the internet. Right?

There are binaries required in 4.0.4 that aren't officially updated, it seems.
Hence my new .zip that is compiled from official SU, but with new binaries.

Hi,
Thanks.
Just followed you guide and I have now superuser installed and working. Thanks.
Your guide has some errors. Link is to Maguro and your guide says to flash Toro. Fix the links.
When I flashed Clockwork Recovery with ROM Manager, superuser app asked to confirm the SU request by ROM Manager.
So I assume rooting works well.

I should probably implement that better.
Guide originally came from a CDMA only forum.
And a GSM only forum.
Merged the posts here...
But it does mention changing the code.
I'll fix it up so it's more obvious now.
And yes, if it asked for SU...
It's fine.
Great news. I hadn't had anyone test yet.
Thanks for being a guinea pig .

Are you on the samsung or google stock rom? IF its a google stock rom (yakju or mysid) then you should have got an update push but if you are still on the samsung rom then there is no update from them.

If i may, that's something even google can find the awnser.
To make a nandroid, you need cwm/twrp. To have any of those, it is understated that you need to be unlocked, and stated on first post of each custom recovery you will find that a custom recovery needs to be flashed by fastboot, or... by a custom recovery already installed.

Again, this is wrong. There is no need to unlock if he is running 4.0.2 to install CWM.
@OP:
If you are not running yakju or yakjuzs, there is no update available for you. You either have to switch to yakju (see here) or wait.
If you are running yakju or yakjuzs, and want to get the update without losing any data do this:
1) Follow the procedure here to get root access.
2) Install ROM Manager and use it to flash CWM. Use CWM to do an nandroid backup.
3) Unlock your bootloader
4) Use CWM to restore your nandroid backup
5) Follow the procedure here to update.

Flash custom recovery if you haven't already. You'll need an unlocked bootloader to flash recoveries. If your bootloader is locked, it'll wipe your phone. Unlocking bootloader is not required if a custom recovery has already been flashed. Flash a root package.
PS: I hate that the thanks button is right next to the reply button.
If you kept your bootloader unlocked after rooting the first time, simply follow the same procedure to root again (without the unlocking, of course); flashing CWM, and flashing the SU.zip, etc..
If you've locked the bootloader, you have to unlock it again, which will wipe the device.
Use my guide.
Ignoring the unlock command (as the above poster said) if you're already unlocked.
No need to even flash cwm; just boot it with 'fastboot boot recovery cwm_file.img', flash su (you'll find updated zips for 4.0.4 around), reboot, enjoy your rooted system while still being able to take otas.

I find this redundant...
Only because the recovery is rewritten upon reboot to the stock one anyway.
Well, that's also a valid point of view.
What's really redundant is that OP seems to be quite attached to his data, and he mentions root on 4.0.2, so most likely he never unlocked it, since, as we know, 4.0.2 had a root exploit.

Just upgraded my GN using OTA update to 4.2. Using GNex Toolkit (v9.4.0) I went to re-root my phone so went through the steps and selected:
2. SuperSU 0.98 by Chainfire] [SELECT THIS TO ROOT IF ON ANDROID 4.2]
Process went through fine but when I tried Titanium Backup it said my GN was not rooted. When I tried loading SuperSU, it prompts me saying it needs to be updated which I accept but then fails.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
manually flash the supersu zip and then update it and it should work.. rooting via the toolkit is a hit or miss on 4.2, it works for some and doesnt for others

Since yesterday i had Android 4.1.2 (yakju, rooted). About 9PM i upgraded to 4.2 and Root Checker told me that I don't have a proper root access. Does Toolkit 9.4 easily roots yakju 4.2? Where I can find another guides about rooting my yakju 4.2? Ah, I forgot. Noob here.

Ditch the toolkit and follow this guide. Learning to use ADB and Fastboot empowers you to control your device and to fix any errors, should they occur ~ an unlikely scenario.

I wish everyone would let tool kits die. No offence to the person making them but it's lazy and seeing as it takes 2 seconds to set adb/fastboot up it's not really necessary...

Had the same problem as above.
As i wanted to keep stock recovery, here is a solution (edit: I have unlocked bootloader)
a) Copy to SDcard the file: CWM-SuperSU-v0.98.zip from the XDA SuperSU
b) boot Nexus to fastboot
c) use the GNex Toolkit (v9.4.0) to: 10.Boot to Custom Recovery without Permanently Flashing it
d) choose: 1.Flash Clockworkmod Touch Recovery 6.0.1.4
Nexus booting to Clockworkmod and flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.98.zip & reboot (allow stock rom to reflash boot.img)
After boot, got a Rooted 4.2 with stock recovery. SuperSU works OK :good:
I'm annoyed by these ****ty threads. Every person that wants to be freaking spoon fed every thing they need, should brick their device, for real, and never touch a smart phone again.

Hello all,
I already searched the forum but I did not found any good answer.
1. In the past I've succesfully applied root access without unlocking the bootloader while still beeing on Android 4.1.x from this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1894717
2. Now I've got a 4.2 OTA update. Before applying it I used Voodoo OTA rootkeeper to keep a backup of su.
3. Restored su with Voodoo OTA rootkeeper
The result is that I have again root access from shell but when I want to use Apps which require root I always get failures and even no confirmation dialog.
How do I get superuser working (fully root) like before?
Thanks,
therealmarv

How should I flash that without having CWM? I think I need a manual repair :/
Is your bootloader locked?
If not...use my guide (in sig or stickied) to back up data before unlocking...
If so... "fastboot boot recovery.img" and flash the file.
The recovery is only being booted into...not written to the phone; so you'd still be stock rooted.
How in the world you not have a unlocked bootloader when you rooted before..
That aside, do remember to keep the bootloader unlocked next time..

What i mean is how can they not unlock the bootloader after rooting..
I did not unlocked bootloader because I thought it is not necessary (and I also thought it will affect OTA updates). So just to get it right: I can make a backup of my phone, root it, unlock bootloader and recover the backup afterwards so that no data is lost?
Ok I solved my issue (having su access via adb and locked bootloader) with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27085483&postcount=141
1. I unlocked the bootloader with the link above
2. flashed CWM with fastboot
3. flashed SuperSU CWM ZIP for getting root again
So I now have fully root, unlocked bootloader and cwm great.
