Little silly question but hey needs to be asked. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Can someone tell me why the google search bar on the top of the homescreen sometimes says google on the left and sometimes its just a magnifying glass?
Also is there a way to remove the bar from the homescreen all together?
Thanks for replies guys

As for the Google/magnifying glass question I can't say. You can remove the search bar by using a different launcher such as novalauncher.
I'm not certain but I think you might be able to remove it with the stock launcher by removing the google quick search apk but that might not be true.

simply disabling google search in the apps menu gets rid of the bar, but it's useless as it doesn't give you the space back for icons. It just looks funny now because you'll have blank space you can't use.
Just use a 3rd party launcher.

Theres no specific time. Ive only had the phone a couple of days. When i first got it it said google but now its just a magnifying glass.
Ive noticed on a video on youtube aswel that it changes in the review. If you look at the video at 0:16 thats how my search bar looks right now...

Hm, mine's never looked like that lol.

Annoying... I like it better when it says google.
I hate not knowing why things do things. This is going to drive me crazy until i find out.
I cant be the only one obviously with it being in this video aswel...
Is there anyone out there who can solve the mystery lol

what os version are you running, maybe it is fixed on 4.0.3 and you are on something earlier? I have never experienced this either, pretty sure it has always said google.

I've had this happen a few times before. To fix it I would force stop the launcher. It will reload and "google" will be on the search bar again. It must be a bug.

Yeah maybe.
I rebooted the phone and it went back to google again.
Im on 4.0.2 stock.
I noticed if you touch the search bar and keep your finger on it then the google pops up underneath the magnifying glass.
Maybe its just a bug =/

This has been happening to me the past couple days on both my transformer prime and nexus

[Q] Screen Optimization 2.3.5

Anybody know what this file/program/something is?
Does it have something to do with the weird way the LG Nitro scrolls?
I'm afraid to freeze it and test...
I believe this program is designed to upscale apps that are not programmed properly to work with 1280x720 displays. If you come across an app that looks messed up, I think that's what this app is designed to fix.

Ohhhhh, that makes sense. Would explain the extra option in settings. Thank you.
It can also upscale that apps that work on the phone - it will make the text bigger to compensate for the higher resolution on the screen (which normally leads to tiny text).
what's odd about the screen optimization app is the user has to manually add new apps to it, i would ASSume that it could be automated.

I thought that it had added a couple to the list for me the first time I clicked on it. Not sure if that was because those apps were not made for a 720p screen?

you know, i haven't paid well enough attention to see if it does add some, i just installed dolphin HD and it did not auto handle it, not sure if that's made for 720p but it does *say* HD in the name ;-)
also just noticed after i updated juice defender and ram manager pro just now they are showing as unchecked for optimization after i had enabled them upon initial install.

OK, i just realized what's been happening. several apps have not been running full screen sometimes, namely opera mobile and even the home screen via GO launcher.
it was driving me nuts, i was rebooting to get the screen back to normal, well, the screen optimization feature is what was shrinking those app's screens. i turned them off and they work just fine now!

[Q] "Your device isn't compatible with this item" error

I'm getting this error on many apps, including standards like Facebook and Google Plus. After searching on here I've seen a lot of suggestions but so far none of them have worked.
I've tried rebooting, changing LCD density (160, 200 and 240), clearing the market data, restoring from an old Titanium backup and even tried the Eris Market Fix as some people reported success with that. This is happening with every ICS build I try (currently on the DARKSTAR ROM 1.0.2 but also had this problem on Calkulin's stock rooted tars so I don't believe it's a ROM issue).
Anyone have any other suggestions? The only thing I can come up with is that this didn't happen until after the Android Market -> Play Store change-up. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
I'm not sure if this will work or not, but is something you can try.
Go to the Google Play in Manage Apps, and uninstall the updates, then try and get the apps you want.
I know with some custom rom's back in the day when we were going from Froyo to GB, they had a problem being recognized in the Market, and this was the only way to get some apps downloaded.
Try it out and see if it works..
Thanks borkan, that didn't work for me but it was worth a shot.
I finally stopped getting this error. I tried so many things I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but for anyone else with this problem I'd suggest giving them all a shot. I left my density at 240 for awhile (over 45 minutes) and next time I checked the market the error messages were gone and everything installed with no problems. Maybe it just takes some time to settle in.
Hmm, well maybe it was just the density taking it's time to register with the market as you say. I wish we could know for sure since I've heard a lot of people with this problem recently and would be nice to have a definitive answer.
I had the same problem. Always use 182 dpi and got the same error with a lot of apps ("your device isn't compatible with this item") changed dpi back to 240 waited for 1 hour or so and now a can download the apps again. great!
you dont have to wait an hour. just revert back your lcd density to 240/go to 'applications' in settings and under the 'all' tab, find 'play store'/market and clear cache and data. then open the market back up and update.

And 320 is density of nexus...its because that is the standard of the screens and google enforces that kind of in a way to make it easier on app Developers .... it makes it easier to make a app because you don't have to to make the app work right on every density and 95 % of Android users have no clue u can change the density...its for the masses

Spam in notification bar solution...

Found a nice app for those of you that might have experienced the annoying "plus" sign or some other weird symbol in your notification bar that takes you to some website when you click on it, it is caused from rouge app's couldn't figure it out for the life of me...However if you go the market and download the app called "airpush detector" it will tell you what app is the culprit and it's free! Found out mine was coming from Music Paradise...enjoy.
Agree. Be aware of free music apps and specially mp3 download apps.

I'm downloading 'airpush detector' along with 'addons detector'. We will see how it works. Usually my biggest concern about this type of apps is how much it consumes the cpu/memory and battery.
I have always wondered why companies push ads, do people actually click them? I think the whole ad supported internet is a bubble that is about to pop, and pull down companies like google with it.

Airpush detector - simple and one click refresh. Light weight apk.
Addons detector - heavier than Airpush. Create 'Addons detector' option at Settings > Accessbility. Provide options to turn on or off.
I'm not going to provide the product review in here but personally Airpush detector seems like better fit to me. Kept Airpush but removed Addons.

Unfortunately there are those that do push them. My wife came running up to me just the other day and said, "Honey look! I just won an iPad3!" Before I could look at the push notification she clicked it.
Fortunately I stopped her before she started entering all of her personal information!
EDIT: Needless to say I used Airpush and found the offending app and helped her to remove it.
The airpush phenomenon is becoming more and more virus like. My customers devices get infected with this crap, and constantly get an internal memory full error, consistant lag and power cycling. It not until I either hard reset or remove the culprit app do these things stop. I've escalated this to my S&R manager, and was told he was pushing to get eTicket its own complaint type devoted to the airpush virus.
There is also a airpush blocker on the market. It works great for me. Blocks the notification add from several sources. "Notification add Killer" or "NAK" is also a good detector/uninstaller.

People even fall for the Nigeria 409 scams still... Blows my mind.
And as long as gullible people like that exist, others will prey upon them.

Can you post a screenshot? I don't see any ads.
I also saw this after the most recent launcher app update and removed the icon, but don't see anything in my app drawer.

Not in the app drawer, it's actually embedded in the preferences bit of the launcher settings (brought up by long pressing the homescreen)

Stock launchers are never great, Nova Prime took over 5 minutes I had my ZF2, been good since then. Samsung was the worst for their launcher, sluggish as heck.
It popped up on mine after the update today....I sent it to trash immediately but this is bogus....yes we should all get on Zentalk and complain...
true we have to complain this on zentalk..its too much! adds on the phone we paid for $ 300? wtf!
I saw an Ad the very first time i watched a video on YouTube but since then ive rooted and used adblock so i dont know if its a one time thing or a repetitive thing.

I am on the latest version and don't see it, maybe its because i'm rooted and deleted most bloatware already?
I've updated to the latest version & all I see is "Enable Hot Downloads" which I don't do... so no ads.
It took a while for the icon to eventually show up for me, but it was at a random time returning to home that triggered it after I updated.
There's a growing thread on their ZenTalk forum. Anyone that wants to join stating their dislike of this can find the thread in the Suggestion -> ZenFone section with the title [Launcher] Hot Downloads embedded in Zen UI Launcher.

Pop up ads on my home screen

Hello, so recently I've been dealing with pop up ads on my phone. I factory reset the phone and they were gone, but now it's having ads again when I don't even have an app open. I've tried virus scanners and nothing detected. Is there a way to figure out what file is causing this?
Thank you!
I had that same issue last week. Are they popping up though chrome or firefox? It was a rogue app on my part but for you it looks like its something else. Since you already factory reset the phone, you might as well download the latest build and "flash-all". After that you should not have any problems as it completely wipes the device.
If you goto your battery settings does it show an app that may be causing ads?

So it pops up randomly not just using chrome. A few minutes ago I was in the middle of a Clash Royale Game and an add popped up. I recently downloaded a QR reader from the play store and I think that's when it started again.
I deleted the app, but it's been still going on. That's why I went to use the anti virus/malware apps, but they found nothing.
Is there anyway to fix or find what is doing it without factory resetting?

@hketola: Kapersky isn't trustworthy IMO. Try Malwarebytes instead.
If you have Adaway installed, go into the settings and check for Adaware, it'll tell you what apps and what kind of ads they push
I just had the same problem and it seemed to be caused by the app store. So I read all your efforts and then took a look in my settings and here's what I did that resolved the issues: settings < apps & notifications < advanced < Special app access < display over other apps < google play services < switch to "not allowed"
Hope this works for you.

I'll let you know as I've been having this issue for the last few days. Thank you!
I fixed a similar issue on a friends phone. When Ad appears, swipe up (assuming pill gesture on Android 9) and you get the recents screens. The current app (app showing ad) icon will be at top of the screen preview. Press and hold on the icon until a context menu appears and select App Info. Now you know which app is popping ads up.
Google Account Ad Personalization (Ad Settings)

It's that ****ing google ads that you can opt out of, but they force the others ads on you.
This is an invasion of privacy you pay all this money for your personal phone and they force content on you whether you like it or not.

Trying to get past the 10 post filter aye? That's what it looks like based upon the fact you replied to a post that's been dead for six months plus.
Now I won't engage with your political rant because this isn't political. You own the hardware, but Google owns the software, especially the Google apps. The ads are Google's means of recouping development costs of Android.
Now, if you don't want ads but want to use Google apps, you install and run Blokada. It works on virtually everything, except YouTube. Or you use a version of Android that doesn't include Google apps.
If neither option appeals to you, try and find a dumbphone, because Apple is worse.
