When HTC Desire S and Desire HD can get official ICS then why can't we ?
I am not talking about custom Roms.
Simple it is just plain business..If they will ever provide future sales will be slowed down...
Ok, but why HTC give ICS to his users and Samsung doesn't?

I really agree with you. Was surprised to see HTC include the Desire S and HD in their upgrade list(I'd thought about getting the Desire S before getting the W). I think that OFFICIALLY makes Samsung the worst Android OEM in customer service. I can see HTC responding to its decline in sales by trying to keep the customers it already has...same way Sony Ericsson(Soon to be Sony) did by upgrading its entire 2011 Xperia lineup. Samsung is just too bullish and stupid to realise and do it now before ITS sales begin to decline. I can already see it happening..Galaxy M, Galaxy Ace Plus, Galaxy S Advance... these are all very lackluster devices to make in this severely competitive industry. Anyone can tell how hardly different they are from from all last years phones. Sammy's going to decline this year most likely then maybe they'll think twice about upgrading our phone

I totally agree with your opinions. Due to declined sale in last year htc anounsed this news. I am also wondering that desire s and hd are also included, i have been user of htc including desire s, this is pretty good phone but wonder is much better than desire s, desire s has only advantage of 768mb Ram. I think Sense is much heavier than Touch Wizard. So why we can't have ICS? I think Samsung will also face decline in sale.
I know its a business strategy but i am sure the net profit will not increase.

It really sucks seeing Samsung not giving us the update though. All they care are the S2 and Note. If I knew of this earlier I would have bought a Desire HD or S.
True. Samsung policy sucks. This is the first samsung that i bought. But it ill be the last. They only care about high market and dont give a fck about middle and low markets. And they say that are better that apple. Lol. Htc win points in my consideration. If my buddies ask me opinions about phones. Im sure to tell them to dont buy samsung.

I used to be a Htc fan since G1, I have used, Htc G1, G2, Desire , Desire S, Incrdible S but believe me there is no difference in OTA among Htc and Samsung.
Both are lazy to give updated OS to enduser , they are just interested to produce new models but with the nearly same configuration.
I sold DS and IS because there were no chance for ICS, but recently I came to know that they have the plan to give ICS test to these devicecs, but its because of declined in Sale.
And this is the same story with Samsung, Galaxy S and W are powerfull enough to handle ICS but they dont want to give official ICS.
So there is no difference between Htc and Samsung when it comes to OTA .
And Samsung will decline in sales this year just like HTC did last year. They have put out a such a poor list of devices which are no better than last years phones(Galaxy M, Ace Plus, Ace 2, S Advance, Tab 2 & Note 10.1).The GS3 must exceed all expectation else Sammy will decline terribly.

I guess most popular brands right now feels it is more important to sell something completely new and give full support to it than fixing and giving more support at the old ones. :/
Sent from my GT-I8150 using XDA
Its just plain "marketing strategy".. like Samsung, if they always support future OS upgrades then the consumer who have their old samsung devices will not buy a new one and for that reason, samsung sales will go down.. Samsung is using this strategy to make consumers change their phone constantly and buy a newer samsung model with updated OS.
for HTC and Sony ericsson, they learned their lessons and they offer ICS upgrade with their models. like the xperia series of Sony ericsson http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_gives_ics_update_roadmap_rollout_starts_in_march_2012-news-3559.php
IMHO if you want constant updates, buy a google phone

Hey, cool down! The strathegie to support the newest and most expensive devices have most! See it as a chance for the great developers here to show their talents! ;-)
My first smartphone was an very old Windows HTC magician. It was very slow and not supportet by HTC. Here in this forum was a russian student who portet newer Windows Mobile for it and it was so great to see, what he made of this old phone! The same I experienced with my old Samsung Omnia. And how fast the developers here made my SGS. So I don't mind. I think in time the developers here do the same for our Wonder!

Not really until current projects are still in development. I'm not upgrading to a device lacking a nice selection of custom roms from trusted developers. It would be Pyrrhic victory imo.
Thought I wanted to upgrade, when I first began reading about the Pyramid/Sensation... But as others have said, I am happy to sit this one out and hang on to my Desire. Just having too much fun with it at the moment
I'm going Evo 3D. Need a bit of novelty value!
Seems a decent phone too.

Not for now i have no needs for something bigger and better.
Not for now. Probably upgrading in Q1 2012 - when a bunch of new phones will come out.
Stick with desire, same reasons as given above... basically;
1) wait for the nexus whatever to see what that's like (and see if htc do a spin-off of that to see what that's like too)
2) wait for an ICS phone (HTC or not - i assume this will be part of #1 though)
3) wait for 4G
4) wait for quad core (rumour is early 2012)
5) my desire is fine as it is at the moment
I can wait till Sep/Oct to see if I am still sticking with Android or jumping ship to iPhone 5, or I could just keep the Desire and get the next-gen iPod touch instead

Same here. I'm pleased with the Desire and would probably wait it out for another year until the next wave of Android phones to hit the market.
If I had to choose what I want to have after the HTC Desire, then I would choose Samsung S2 Galaxy, maybe I'll have the opportunity when my subscription runs out, which I have to march 2013 or will be an even more interesting possibility. In any case, I would not go on any other system
regards
Take away gaming - Can you think of any app that the desire cant do, that the other phones can?
I cant Desire is still right up there with the best, spec wise no but still a great phone
I've had my S2 for about a week now - at first I didn't really like how big it was and how light it feels but kept with it for a few days and grew to like it more and more - that's without even rooting it yet.
Tbh I was still perfectly happy with my desire I just had the opportunity at next to no cost so took it - now when I pick up the desire it's hard to believe I didn't notice the difference at first - everything about the S2 other than the standard keyboard is well advanced (which you would expect to be fair).
All i'll say is don't try the S2 or sensation whilst you still have your desire or you might not be able to hold on for the next gen phones!

I will move to reading their section in xda.

if you want updates you need to go Nexus really.
Samsung are flavour of the month for the moment - but remember their FroYo release? It took about 3-4 months after HTC's release...
Failing that you just need to go AOSP with a custom rom - which you can do on almost any handset.
Perhaps you should address your goodbye to HTC directly
here you are

I love my Desire
I love the my Desire, and pretty sure it is going to be the Android phone I would use for at least 1.5 years.
The main reason being there are so many Desire users, the ROMs just keep coming and getting better.
Like op i've moved from a desire to a sgs2 for many reasons, mainly my contract was up and I didn't like the lag on the sensation screen! But what gets me is how many people keep going on about custom roms for the desire. Of course there are loads the phone is old in tech year's, I'm sure the same will happen to the sgs2 in about 6 months, but to be honest I don't find much difference between the 2 apart from never having to think about how many applications I can have. Ie running out of memory! As they say you pay ya money and make ya choice.

True, but Samsung didn't promise Desire users Gingerbread and a new version of Sense and failed to deliver.
I got the Desire based on this, and know I feel they flipped the finger, so I can't really blame OP for ditching HTC.
I'm surprised google didn't have a word with them since google set out a baseline for all phone manufacturers that each handset should get at least 18 month's of updates? Therefore google is saying the max size each version of android is gonna be and the processing power requirements! It's like the htc wildfire this will never see gingerbread as it has the same if not less memory and power than the desire! Yet its a newer phone than the desire! Or is it google just doesn't care? And is letting phone manufacturers get away with it?

I love when people talk about companies "promising" something and then moan when it doesn't happen. Reminds me of the old days in the school playground...
From what I can see, HTC did thier best to deliver, but unfortunately the constraints of the device stopped them being able to do more. What do people expect them to do, come over and upgrade the memory in each phone?
Some people just want the moon on a stick.
Note to OP, it's 'so long' not 'good-bye'

You think HTC is bad build quality? Whenever I hold a SGS2 in my hand, ive got the feeling im holding a worthless piece of plastic. I still have a few months to think about the new phone im goinna pick, but I think I will miss Sense too much once I choose a non htc phone.
No, as the others already said, there wont be an original ICS-ROM for the Desire.
And the user "stankyou" meant by saying "No. It almost didn't get Gingerbread." that the stock Gingerbread ROM on Desire is just a light version of GB.
And yeah, its really a evidence of incapacity of HTC to not support a not even 2 years old flagship (at the time it was launched) smartphone. But Samsung and most of the other Android smartphones producers are quite the same unfortunately. Only Sony (Ericsson) showed way more effort in the last few months.
And for me HTC really lost the lead in technology a bit and some people are also saying that the devices of HTC suffer the loss of manufacture quality. My next Phone will probably be a Samsung even though the quality of the covers isnt the best.
There are several ICS Roms in development - but these are all stock.
I'd imagine once HTC Roms with ICS start getting out in the wild, somebody will probably try and port them to the Desire.
Considering the limited hardware, I wouldn't hold out too much hope for them being any good though.

The very least they should do is provide us with working drivers.
I knew when they released the 2.3.5 update that it would be their way of getting out of giving us ics.
Now if we argued they'll say 'well we gave you an update what more do you want'.
Easy way out for HTC not to support us.
Same with the bootloader unlock, imagine how many warranty claims will be turned down now, including hardware faults, they didn't do it just for our benefit but it saves them money from refusing warranty.
I can vouch for the warranty issue as I have been refused already.
Next phone will probably be from a different manufacturer.

HTC didn't wont to send to our WFS an official ICS, now they have much more better devices, that they wants to sell, because of that isn't be well for them lost time and money updating and older device. Now our posibility is that the WFS Team continue doing the proyect of the CM9, but now I' ve seen on her webpage that the proyect was stopped...
Enviado desde mi HTC Wildfire S usando Tapatalk
No way officially...
It is common sense that HTC will not update ICS on Wildfire S.....
Because our phone is Start level phone from HTC...
They dont have much time to develop for it...
We should say HTC to S-OFF our devices... (Unlocking bootloader doesnt allow us to create system partition in order to increase internal memory) rater than ICS update... I think that cm9 will come to us....
Once our device is S-OFF by any utility....
Than their will be a officially support for our device by cm team...
Hope for S-OFF soon nt for the ICS....
Yes I would guess our only hope is forthcoming CM9 or other custom developments by modders here.
OK. So, it's obvious that ICS is a thing of our dreams. But that probably is their plan.
Don't understand?
Well, first they gave us an unlocked bootloader, only so they don't have to spend money, and we lose our warranties. And pretty much all of us have unlocked bootloaders or S-OFF. They want us to build our own ICS, so that they have further evidence to not repair our phones within our warranties.
Understand?
Its not gonna happen, these phones are somewhat lower end models, (not cheap just affordable) and I think they are targeting there most popular phones to have ics, and customer service is gonna tell you what you want to hear to make you happy, but in reality its not going to happen, so I think we wont see ics from HTC at all

Well because these phones are more affordable to the masses then don't you think they'd have made more money from them because they would have sold shedloads more than say a higher end more desirable and much more expensive model?
In which case I think they should support this model!
Imagine all the first time Android users that purchased this phone and will now be loyal Android customers, that does not also mean they'll be loyal to a manufacturer that they feel let down by and left out of the update chain.
Many users will switch to a manufacturer that provides plenty of updates.

True that's a good point, I feel that HTC will bring ics to there new and high end phones before they get to the wildfire s, since ics is out it will motivate users that don't have ics on there phones to buy that new phone that comes with it. Company's want you to buy there new products, the wildfire s has been out for about 5 months? So just think if ics came to our devices we would keep our phone even longer, phone company's don't want customers to keep there phones for a long time they loose money, so they may feel if you want ics then buy one of our new phone. Thats why i think they wont come out with the update, the more money they make the more phones they come out with

"We can confirm that the HTC One X and One X+ will not receive further Android OS updates beyond Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5. We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed both devices to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences. -HTC"

Well. Its a quad core it could not handle android 4.4. Wait cm is running great. Well they would need a big team to update to kk. Wait thomy updated to cm kk all by himself.
All these just proves that htc did not learn anything. thought they could be it you know the company that cares trying to give out the best for the lowest price and keep it updated as long as possible. Instead they are just like everybody else.
My dad bought a samsung tv today. It could not run the youtube app no matter what. I called samsung and they said it is not a problem from their side but from the developers of the app. Ok so f off and tnx for false advertisement (for 2 months). Then the wifi would not work. Called them again they said if it isnt 5m from the router (visual distance) it wont work. Which actually means hey you have a really crappy wifi chip so thats how we protect ourselves so we dont need to replace it.
Dont know where im going with it? I think that if we dont stand up to the industry and demand changes like i dont know a htc xda program for example or everyone slaps ceo of samsung for everytime youtube wont start, we are going to end up in a ditch from where we will not be able to come out. For christ sake i cant even connect a htc phone to a samsung tv anymore. And that should be normal???
Sorry bad day big rant but i am worried.

the OEM will only update if the SoC manufacturer is updaeting and still supporting the SoC...so because nvidia won't update our kernel htc wouldn't update too ...and to fix most issues we need newer kernel from them,..atleast 3.4.x so that really ALL will work fine with sense and even without...really bulls'it

Its a hard lesson learnt, only buy Qualcomm based chipset phones from now on. nVidia gives fancy names to their chipsets, however they are pathetic when it comes to supporting their chipset.
I think it has to do with HTC also.. Dont blame just nvidia. if HTC wanted they could have updated the phone as fas as i know. Thomy's ROM is working fine on hox and so does slimkat. Why don't HTC discuss it out with nvidia and both could have worked hard to give an update.
But see they both (HTC and nvidia) dont give support to old devices and try to work hard on throwing new devices every then and now. If they would have worked that hard (or even less than that) on giving support to hox, it might be a good decision..
Hox is a solid performing device which HTC d#tched early..

I bought this device to HTC, not to Nvidia. It is HTC responsability to update it.
Google nexus 7 has the same tegra3, and is perfectly working with kit kat.
First months, HTC also gives lots of updates to the oneX, saying they had changed its updating politic. Now, they said this. To bad, HTC. This is my 5th device, and I cant give you anoother chance anymore. I love all of my HTC phones, but this is my last one.

But on the other hand, they're really working hard to quickly update the One. It even has kitkat. The only thing HTC currently needs is more money to provide support to older devices...

The only giveaway on how htc will handle updates is when the new phone comes out. Our hox was perfectly supported till the one came out dont you remember?
And thomy did the update to kk all by himself so i dont think money is the problem here.

It's not enough to look good for the first year until the next device comes out and then suddenly drop almost all support. What happened with the Desire models, Sensation models and now HOX models will also happen to the One when the next "flagship" is announced.

They sure as hell aren't getting that money from me.
I see a main cause that HTC decided to not update our phone anymore in the fact that 90% of the users of a phone are just the basic users, who just leave everything on their phone as it was delivered. Only thing I see my friends changing on their Android phones are the wallpaper and their app shortcuts. Some of them change their widgets, some don't. And out of my whole circle of friends I am the only one who knows what a custom ROM is and what the most up to date Android version is. So why should HTC Update our device any further if the only people really concerning about these updates are "those geeks over at xda developers". If things were the other way around and 90% of the HOX owners around the world would trample HTCs HQ for not updating our phone and would take the same step as me and were not going to buy any other HTC phone anymore they would sure as hell update it to KK.
But as people dont do so, why should they update it.
The thing is that old versions of Android also mean more security concerns and possible app compatability issues in the future. Things like this are a concern for the average user and not so much us who know how to tinker with custom roms.
And my friends who have Android phones and who I'd call average users complain about lack of upgrades just as much as me. They still want their phones to have the newest features, up to date looks and all that. HTC being so horrible with updates means that people recognize then as a company with lack of support. And people don't pay hundreds of dollars/euros for just more than one years worth of support.

It's not like that. You don't see Samsung or Motorola not updating their old devices just because 90% of the users don't complain.
Samsung is going to update S3 to kitkat. and motorola has already confirmed that old devices are receiving kitkat. those devices don't even have large user base like that of HOX.
