If your are rooted just flash a rooted stock rom and NEVER EVER accept an OTA you can lose root or worse taking an OTA while rooted
We are legion, for we are many
Tried flashing a stock rom still wont work and only reason on doing this is because my phone is glitching bad and the sprint Rep I seen today wouldn't touch my phone because they said I need the update done
Sent from my PC36100
download a stock rom, go into recovery, manually wipe everything except sd card (/cache, /boot, /data, /system, etc.), then try flashing the stock rom, see if that works.
You need to un root to take it in. What is your hboot version? This makes a difference in how to un root

Tried that and I know I needed to be unrooted to take it in but they said I need to upgrade my phone to do anything and I can't get it to update

It would help if you gave us some more information. What rom are you on now, what version, how are you trying to update, how did you try to flash, what errors are you getting, etc.

So my wifes phone is rooted with s off. When she receives her update will she be able to update and then I can just reinstall Su and CWM correct?
Thanks

CWM will stop your phone from updating from the OTA.
It downloads fine, but when it tries to reboot to apply the update it looks for the stock recovery. You'll need to go back to stock recovery before you update.
Going back to stock requires that you use the RUU found here which will bring you back to stock recovery correct, but you will still retain S-OFF.
Running the RUU WILL keep S-OFF. But on dougpiston's site there is also a stock recovery you can flash in hboot if you don't want to run the RUU. I haven't used it though. So I can't really say anything about it.
That should work, S-Off/S-On settings are only changed by Unrevoked apps.
The RUU should restore your bootloader, OS, and recovery back to factory.
If that doesn't work, I use the zip files off of dougpiston.com to recover my phone.
Final question. If I apply the RUU will it wipe her phone or will she retain all her apps and such.

The RUU will wipe EVERYTHING! It takes it back to factory settings. Out of the box. Minus S-OFF anyway.
I have a ROM Manager restore point with stock froyo, but rooted. If I restore to this, will I be able to get the OTA gingerbread update?
Why do you all want to receive the ota? Just wait until a devs gets it and makes a rooted flashable zip. Updating the ota will s-off and make you unrootable. Then your gonna be stuck with the crapware Verizon tries to force down our throats. The will be nothing special with the ota except the 50 mb of wasted space for crapware. Just hold on to your shorts and let the devs do their work!

that won't do anything to recovery, you must flash the RUU, or something similar to get back to stock and for it to work.

I'm sure there will be a way to get the tv out being rooted.

Did you download the rom from here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038701 If not, that's the one I would try first.
It kind of sounds like you may have a bad download, either that or you may have accidentally downloaded the system dump instead of the flashable rom? With the file on your computer, are you able to open it up using windows, or does it give you an error? If you're sure you downloaded the right one and that the file isn't corrupted, then I'm not sure. What recovery are you using to flash the rom?
update to 4.22.651.2
I think its clockwork 2.0. I am using stock rom but i rooted using unrevoked. that was the site i downloaded the zip from. im going to retry, I will let you know what happens.
Thanks
If it still fails after you try again, consider switching to Amon_Ra recovery. On the whole it seems like there are a lot more people experiencing flashing problems with Clockwork recovery than with Amon_Ra.
Does this update wipe your phone or only do the update? I don't want to lose my information on my phone. Please let me know. Thanks.

It depends
If your rooted and you are flashing through recovery, then yes you need to full wipe to install it.
If you arent rooted, and you recieve the OTA through HTC software update, then no, it should keep everything the same.
But a couple people I know updated via OTA and there phone is actin real weird now. Jus a word of caution

Ok. Thanks. I am rooted.
Yeah u need to wipe, but if you got titanium backup, u can recover your apps and your phone is synced with google, u can recover your contacts, and if you dload sms backup and restore, you can recover your text messages, the only thing you cant recover is mms. But u can just save all ur mms pics.
Edit- oh yeah ur voicemails will be gone too. Unless you use google voice

is there a way to remove clockwork recovery? my wife's phone has s-off and recovery, but she wants to keep it stock and use the OTA upgrade.
You should really check this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161411
I just flashed this over my stock froyo. Worked flawlessly, didn't lose any apps or anything. Removes all the VZW bloat and runs perfectly.
One thing to note, I believe you'll have to manually update your radio to the newest version but it's no big deal.
You can find the newest radio here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134451
From what I've read the radio that comes with the OTA is 20.27W.30.0811U_1.09.01.0622 unless someone can tell me I'm wrong.
i know all about that. but i still would like to know how to go back to stock recovery if possible.

You'll have to reflash the RUU and overwrite CWM with the stock recovery image once more.
If you don't mind me asking is there a reason why?
The only way I'd even consider doing this is if you're going to return the phone or if there's something wrong with it.
Why not just flash the official OTA that RMK put together and then flash the new radio?
It's EXACTLY the same thing minus the verizon bloat apps, heck it even runs faster than the stock OTA.
Do you flash the new radio like you would a new rom?

No, There's a certain way you have to do it. Pretty easy BUT you have to check the MD5 to make sure it's not corrupt, otherwise you'll brick.
put the P32IMG.zip file onto the root of your sd card. Boot into hboot by holding vol down and power on startup.
It'll search your sd card and then ask to update. press power to update. It'll reboot when finished.

The issue is that if you flash the new OTA you'll lose root for the foreseable future. Currently most are unsure if it will undo the s-off and in the process you may lose the ability to root until a new exploit is found.
Read the first thread that is stickied on this forum about the OTA.

There's an app in the android market called AFV (android file verifier) that allows you to check the md5 sum of files you download directly on your phone. I would suggest you install that app and make sure the md5 matches the radio file you downloaded before flashing the radio as changing radios has much more potential to brick your phone entirely that traditional rom flashing.
this is for my wife's phone. mine is running CM7. my concern is that if i go forward with a rooted gingerbread, i won't be able to return her to full stock recovery and rom later. i don't want to do anything to her phone i can't undo later. is there a path for that after upgrading to the rooted stock rom?

Of course, it can always be undone later on. However, if you do the OTA update then you will not be able to root until a different exploit has been found.
This is why we're trying to get you to go the route of the rooted stock rom.
Just follow the directions in the first 2 posts of that thread and she'll be as stock as she got the phone (Minus having root, it being faster, etc....)
what's the rollback if we want to go full stock. no root, no CWM - stock enough to send to verizon.
I understand about the wife issues. My widest inc2 arrives in a few day. My plan is root and stock debloated Rom for her. She won't even know its not stock. That way when she wants sense 3.0 I can give it to her. If she knows I never hear the end of it.

i am a total noob pls pm me if u have the time to help... i have a stock rooted ROM, s-off, with hboot 6.16.1002 and also have like a million and one questions. i bought the phone rooted.
What exactly do you need help with? If you just want the latest GB update just find a stock rooted rom and flash it thru recovery, brad--- the - represent numbers I can't remember on the end of his name, has a good one called sprint updated, to flash go to recovery wipe data/factory reset wipe all options including cache and dalvik cache, hopefully you are using amon RA because cwm doesn't have as many wipe options feel free to pm me if u need more help
Edit: if you flash another rom afterwords the update wont stick so there's really no point in updating just find a rom you like and flash it, that can take a while tho cuz you will need to try different roms/kernels to find what works best for you

If you're rooted you should never take an ota update it can mess.your phone up. That's y it is recommended to flash a stock rooted updated rom if you change roms the update will go away anyways as the new rom will be whichever revision of android it was based off of

It's called flashing, but I doubt you have root anymore. You may have s-off, but you probably don't have root access.

long time evo user, noob at the s3. I rooted my dad's phone because he needed wifi tether, but he is freaked out about accidentally applying an ota and bricking his phone. Can I disable ota checks or restore the stock recovery while keeping root? Thanks!
You can always install OTA RootKeeper and have it back everything up. I used it for the first time last night before updating my wife's S3 and it worked great.
Did you have a stock recovery or can you install the updates over a custom one?

Is to just flash the lg8 modem posted in the development section and then suppress the update notification by flashing this http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1244277&d=1344225893 or by flashing the legit update and flashing this after to keep root http://shabbypenguin.com/k0/ecm/TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5.zip. if you didnt modify system you can copy the legit update from cache to sd and flash in cwm

Okay thanks so much! If I did install that ota mod is there a way to receive updates again? What would happen if he accidentally clicked install now and let the phone attempt to install the ota with cwm installed? Would it brick or would it be fine?

No you wont brick. And the mod only makes u look up to date so any future update will come thru as normal.
If u hit install with cwm And ur system is unmodified it will probably finish but will get rid of root thats what the root from recovery zip is for. Def no brick tho.
Thanks soo much Okay so if he just accepts an update the phone will automatically update through cwm but will get rid of root? So he has nothing to worry about except losing root if sammy sends out an ota.

Ya and thats saying that the update finishes. Worst that will happen is root is gone. If the system was modified or something dont match the checks the update does, the update will fail and nothing will change. But i can assure you, it will not hardbrick u. Ur In samsung country now lol and that has never ever happened with a samsung to my knowledge. Like i said In first post tho definatly recomend coming here for the update (usually a modem) flash it manually, and avoid the ota altogether. But hitting the install button wont hurt you.
I've found this is much easier. Zedomax has a rooted LG8 stock ROM up for download. Just flash, clear cache and you're ready to go. (note that if you have any flashed mods such as a CPU editor or the Google Now on ICS mod you will have to reflash)
