[Q] Do I need to unlock bootloader of XPLAY for recovery? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Rebooting into recovery is required for installing .zip files. Correct me if I am wrong. Can I do this without unlocking bootloader? If so, How?
Or is there any other way to flash .zip files without booting into recovery?

If you're rooted just use CWM Installer

[Q] Root and cwm on a .62 (or it was.64?)firmware

Hi guys,i have in my hands an italian xperia play(r800i) with the last 2.3.4 firmware(i dont remember if it is .64 or .62,in every case it is the latest firmware.my question is:how to root and next install cwm?i read of a method with fastboot which start a recovery for install the xperiaroot.zip.it is valid for my phone?and next, how to make recovery permanent without changing kernel?is this method valid? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840 i specify that the phone has locked bootloader.
Up Someone can reply one of this questions?thanks
You can't use fastboot with a locked bootloader. Also you need root before you can run that CWM app. To get root follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
Then you can just run that CWM app to install recovery. This is somewhat permanent, as it stores the recovery in your system partition, this isn't as secure as your kernel partition, but I don't think that's a problem really.
very thanks,so if in future i install that recovery and next i want to flash the doomkernel,i can't because that kernel is incompatible with a previous installed CWM?

Can I flash CWM on Non-Rooted Nexus, but Unlocked Bootloader?

Hey.
Title says all.
Or should I just boot into recovery without flashing when I need to do it on the toolkit?
Also, for flashing kernels do they require root?
Thanks!
Cwm can be flashed on non-rooted as long ad its unlocked.

ok thanks man and do you know if kernels require root? To install?
edit: Tried to flash CWM and it said "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" Looks like it requires su.
Without root, you'll have to do it via fastboot. Go to clockworkmod site and download the one for your phone, your call as for touch version or not. Place it in the same directory as fastboot, then "fastboot flash recovery <filename>".
Alright thanks Johan. Do you know if flashing kernels requires root?
No, but you'll have to go into CWM (or use fastboot) to flash one, meaning you can't just use rom manager or other apps that install stuff.
Alright, thanks.
Root is only require inside the os. Everything else can be done with just unlocking.

[Q] GNex TOOLKIT V7 Drivers, Backup, Unlock, Root, CWM, Flash, Mods + MUCH MORE [GSM

Gnex Toolkit option 10 = Boot into custom recovery without permanently flashing it. I understand that this means that the stock recovery won't be overwritten. Does it therefore mean that you can use a custom recovery to flash zip files from sd partition without using/losing stock recovery?
NB Why can't I ask this question at the gnex toolkit thread? I don't appear to be allowed to join in.

Yep, it means exactly that. You could do the same using the fastboot command fastboot boot <recovery-name>.img if you decide to ever learn to use fastboot and ADB (which you should ).

@Unlawful. Thank you very much for your extremely prompt reply. Perhaps you would be kind enough to indulge me further. The reason I asked the question is that I am currently rooted and using a custom rom (Gummy) but fancy some JellyBean. I understand that I need to flash stock rom 4.0.4 and then flash stock recovery in order to get OTA update (btw do I need to do a system wipe before flashing the stock rom as you do before you flash a custom rom or is is ok just to flash stock without a separate manual wipe?), reboot and see if I get the OTA update immediately. If so I can just go ahead and update. If not I have the OTA update as a flashable zip file I obtained elsewhere in XDA. Hence if I have a stock recovery installed but can use a custom recovery (CWM Touch) I can flash the update as zip using CWM and then re-root and re-flash CWM permanently, all of this being done by the toolkit. Is my thinking correct?

[Q] root through odin not working

i just bought an ssg2 which was apparently unlocked. trying to root it through odin but it doesnt do anything. as soon as i click start all it does is nothing. it is running stock gingerbread.
any input dudes?
Phone recognized by the PC? Correct drivers installed on the PC? Have you followed the steps properly?
You need to flash a custom recovery first, something like Clockwork Recovery or TWRP (I think that's right?), and flash a root binary through that, in your case it would be a file called 'su-3.0.5' (that's for gingerbread).
There are tons of guides here on how to install a custom boot recovery and how to root, find one that you understand and follow it.

magisk on stock rom unrooted

Never tried, but even though root may not be needed, unlocked bootloader probably is. Magisk non-system works by patching boot img... If you unlock bootloader you probably can use it.

You can unlocked bl by official Sony method, then flash recovery with adb. Boot to recovery and flash Magisk.
Backup ta - https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/universal-dirtycow-based-ta-backup-t3514236
Unlock bl - https://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader
Recovery img - https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=961840155545588613
You can try flashing recovery within locked bl, but I don't think it would work.

So, if you was wondering it, no, cant flash it with locked bl.
At the moment Backup ta didnt work, will check that thread
And thanx the help, nice to have you on z1c forum :good:
perfect. thx! i was already wondering, if i had to downgrade my z1c in order to get the recovery back. but now, how i do i flash magisk from here?
when i try to flash, i get an error message saying, that the ftf is in sony elf32 format and that i need bootbridge from @AdrianDC to flash.
anyone ever did that or has a better idea?
just tried it now and ended up in a bootlop
It is many months after this post, but in case this helps anyone, here is the answer.
BootBridge method is pretty simple and it worked for me.
On an un-rooted device. (important)
Just rename magisk zip to "install.zip" put it in a folder called install.
Then with 7zip, create a zip-file, include the bootbridge folders, "META-INF" and "scripts" with the "install folder" you just created.
Then name it "anything_you_like.zip" and flash with TWRP
Basically Magisk is SuperSU alternative and provides SuperSU service for your device. ( roots it )
No problems for me at this point. Working on 14.5.A.0.270 and can also get working on 14.6.A.0.236 but have other problems related to getting compatible recovery on 236.
Eventually in recovery, system mount and unmount break for me, then other mounts eventually fail after trying to get Nanodroid working (My Goal to UnGoogle my Z1c) and can't wipe format or anything (only way to fix is reflash with flashtool)
Deodexed ROM seems to be necessary for Nanodroid and this is causing additional problems for me.
If I have to run with unlocked bootloader, I think AOSP may be a better starting point.
