[Q] Does anyone else's battery only charge to 99%? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I saw 100% once on my phone, but otherwise it typically charges to 99%, or at least that's what's displayed when I unplug it in the morning.
That said, it's usually plugged in for about 6-7 hours. My HTC G2 always went to 100%.
I'm not sure if this is a functionality of the Galaxy Nexus; I've heard of devices that stop the charging cycle if the battery has been at 100 for a while.
So, does anyone else see this happening?

It charges to %100 then drops down to %90 then slowly charges back up to %100. This is normal practice used by most smartphones to keep the battery healthy and not let it get overcharged (Which would be very bad). No problem whatsoever.

Battery charging BUG

Hi every one,
As far i know, there is a BUG on every official ROM for European GSM Touch Pro2.
When your battery get full charged and keeping it plugged to the wallcharger, then your Pro2 start taking the power from your battery and NOT from the charger.
This can be checked by yourself and you will see that even with it connected, the battery in running down charge, till you unplug it and plug it again after some minutes/seconds.
Yeah, I have noticed it as well. Anyone have a solution?
Not a bug. LiPoly's do not like being trickle charged, therefore the charger turns off.
I have not verified it on the TP2 but I suspect that if you let it sit long enough the battery level would drop to some level and the charger would charge it back to 100%.
This is a rather good new if it can manage battery loads cycles...

It oughta turn the charger off and run the device from the mains, though, not from the battery. Is it doing that?

No it is NOT doing that, so to me it is a BUG.
just thought i would add this
for some reason on saturday i charged my phone via usb/pc and it lasted less than 24 hrs
so on sunday i drained it and charged it vis the plug
its still going noe
72 hrs 23 mins in stanby 30 mins talk and 4 hrs 7 mins use since 17.43 on 18/10/09
is never been this good so i thought it may be the new rom

Do charge the battery often. The battery lasts longer with partial rather than full discharges.
Do not use if pack gets hot during charge. Check also charger.
Charge methods: Constant voltage to 4.20V/cell (typical). No trickle-charge when full. Li-ion may remain in the charger (no memory). Battery must remain cool. No fast-charge possible.
Rapid charge = 3h

You know of any other modern phone that runs off the mains without the battery? None of my last three phones would without the battery.

My Kaiser will. It turns off when you pull the battery, but you can turn it right back on.
Every one is talking about battery and it's components but no one speaks about that with charger pluged in, it should supply power and by pass the battery once it is fully charged like others models do.

Have in mind that once the battery is fully charged, it never go to charge again till you unplug the cable of your wall/car charger... so what will hapen then???
hello anyone know about the issue with the battery ok when i charge my euro tp2 all night and when i go to start>settings>all settings>system>power i then click on the infomation tab and under last full charge i get "not applicable" and get 0 hours and 0minute for the rest

To me this sounds CRAZY. So people are saying that when the device is fully charged it starts to use its battery, thats just crazy... So basically charging it overnight leaves you with "almost" full battery in the morning...
I havent noticed anything out of the ordinary, and every morning when I come and take my device from the charger the charging light is green (opposed to the orange when started charging) and the battery shows to be 100% full.
I will check this again in the morning as I havent really paid 10000% attention to it, but I think I would have noticed the weird behaviour…
noticed this since day 1. my dash didnt do this. i did notice that a soft reset will resume the charge.
This is normal behavior for battery powered devices.
When it's plugged in, the charge circuit charges the battery.
The device itself always runs off the battery when it's available, this is why some devices won't power on without the battery installed, and many devices won't power on with a failed battery installed.
Laptops do the same thing, though they can switch to AC only without losing their state.
It's a holdover I think from when electronics couldn't switch between power sources fast enough to not lose anything (I remember the original game boy would reset no matter what if you tried to switch between batt and AC). It's possible that cell phones can't make this transition since there isn't really extra space to stuff in the bits that allow this (some large-ish caps).
I've also heard that this reduces wear on the electronics, because the voltage is more reliable, but I've never seen that documented.

I don't think this is true for (modern) laptops. All the macbooks and thinkpads that I've owned had a feature that if you plug it in while the battery is above X% (usually around 96) it will not charge. It even gives a message saying "Not Charging" in the battery status. The battery percentage then stays constant no matter how long I use the laptop, so it is not DIScharging either. Therefore it must be running from AC. If it can do that, I doubt they would have it run off the battery as soon as it is charged to 100% on a full charge cycle. I think any time AC is plugged in, a modern laptop will run from AC rather than battery, regardless of whether it is currently charging the battery. However, that's just my theory from personal observations.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but when I unplug my phone after charging it overnight, it gets to 90% or so in around 30 minutes without use, and goes down at a fast rate throughout the day. If I charge it and unplug it exactly when it hits 100%, I can use the phone fairly regularly and it will take around 2 hours to get down to 90%, and depletes from there very slowly. What's the reason for this, and is there any way I can get the same battery life when leaving the phone overnight?
Running CM7 with incredikernel, although my phone has been this way with countless ROMs and kernels.

Short answer: Yes, you will see better battery life, and no there is not really any foolproof way to make it work if you leave it on the charger after it hits 100%.
Long answer: The Incredible has a battery saver feature built in that prevents over charging by cutting off charge to the battery when it hits 100% (actually 96% according to the people who figured all this out and are way smarter than I am) and doesn't let it start to recharge until it hits 80%. The reason, when you take it off in the morning, it drops so fast is because it is no longer actually at 100%, but has dropped to a legitimate ~90% since having hit the "100%" threshold.
There are some kernels out there that do allow "trickle charging" meaning they keep the phone at a legit 100%, but I don't think many have seen much success using them with the Incredible.
I get around this by charging a bit at night (using anywhere between 80-100%), leaving it off the charger until morning (I usually drop only around 4-5% per 8 hour night) and plug it back in while I get ready and eat breakfast. This usually puts me around 95-100% depending how much I was able to charge the night before and seems to be a much more simple way to handle it than bump charging in my opinion.

I've seen similar topics regarding the quick drop from 100 to 90%, but the battery life as a whole seems to be much longer when it's taken off the charger immediately after it hits 100%. There's so many topics on here, I can't find exactly what I'm talking about, so it's difficult to judge. I'll definitely try the tip in the second post though. Thanks!
It will charge it up to 100% but it won't stay there if you keep it in. It'll let the phone die down to 90% then it'll keep it at that level.
So yes if you unplug it when it first hits 100% you will have a full 100% battery. If you let it sit for much longer than it'll be at 90%
It's been said that leaving it on charger for a while after fully charged messes with the battery meter.
I always bump charge. Charge it full while on then power off and charge till green lights on. Def gets me more batt life. Im getting 24+ hours on a single charge under normal usage with UD 3.1.1.

Quick charge

Now I hesitated to post this until I was fairly sure.
So after about 8 trials over a few weeks and a 100% success rate, I think I can safely say this.
There is a way to quick charge your phone in 10~20 minutes from 0~10% to 75~90%.
I've a samsung vibrant, stock charger, stock battery, and nextgenv1.
(Not tried on other devices yet)
The trick is simple, when ur phones relatively low on power...
1) turn it off
2) plug into charger
3) wait at least 5 minutes
4) while still plugged in and charging, turn phone on
It should then be charged (not 100%, but 75~90% is usually what I get)
I've yet to test the time you charge vs final output charge, or the effects of starting at different charges.
Weird right? After asking my tech, physics, and biology teacher, the idea is that when the phone charges it fills in each battery cell with power, so while its doing the filling and you turn the phone on, all the cells open up so that a flush of energy can come in. Obviously this doesn't sound too good for the battery, so use this at your own peril. I'm just saying its been working every time, and no problems have come up thus far.

The phone has a capacity/voltage map which it uses to work out how much juice is left in the cell, ie at xV it's y% full.
The battery is charged using approx 4.5V, so I'd imagine when you turn your phone on it's getting a false reading of the battery's voltage and that's why it's showing as charged more than it actually is.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. But as it turns out, it lasts for the same amount of time as it usually would at that percentage. 1-2 days.
just get a 2A (2000 mAh) charger, and then you'll charge really fast
i use that in my car every day
So you're saying that letting the phone charge for 5 minutes gives at least 75% charge, then you unplug and run for 1-2 days?
That would take charging the battery with 15A which is 12C (the Vibrant's battery is 1250mAh isn't it?)
That'd be 13.5A down your usb lead from a PSU that should only have a 0.7A output.

I'm just saying that's what the phone's saying ya know. I know next to nothing about battery output, storage, etc.
From 0% as in so drained it can't turn on, to plug in, to turn on while plugged in for a few seconds, it said 35%.
So phone's probably lying as u said, but have yet to test how long it lasts.
Theoretically, it should only lasts a few minutes right? Max of 10 minutes r so I'd imagine? (Yes, I'm asking for ur opinion)
Oh, and I use a live wallpaper too, on 24/7. Just a bit more power drain.

3 minutes later after I restarted it again, just to check if it was a complete dud reading.
Made mistake of not unplugging.
It's reading 51 percent now......6 minutes of charging.

Then obviously when it's reading 10% it's not actually that low. It's more likely that it's a mis-reading and is actually at ~80%. You run through your steps and in ten minutes you have an accurate reading of ~90%
No big mystery, batteries don't always report accurate information. Try flashing a different ROM, use another battery, try a battery calibration app. You'll soon start seeing different results.
Failing that, submit your findings to a Science Journal and wait for the $1m reward that comes with the Nobel Prize that is sure to follow!

As others have stated, the battery information is just probably inaccurate. You can recalibrate it by draining the battery completely and recharging to full.

Battery won't charge past 98%

I have now done three cycles now drained to 1% and put on charge over night when I unplug and check the phone it says 98% and drops 2-3% within 5 mins of use. But if I plug it back in it will then go back to 100%. Anyone else?

There have been threads about this already. Batteries, once charged fully, cannot 'keep charging', so they will stop charging until it is low enough to charge again.
This protects the battery from all sorts of nasty and evil things.
^ precisely. Batteries shouldn't be pegged at 100% and continue to be charged. The firmware lets it drain down then charge up again. You can just get 'unlucky' and unplug at a point where its discharging and at 98%.
I remember that happening with the Nexus S. I'm thinking it must be a Samsung thing. It's just one of those weird OEM things like, Motorola phones measuring the battery in 10% intervals.
All manufacturers charge their batteries this way but there are many ways to mask that process. People apparently want to see a fully charged phone when they plug it off the charger. They don't mind that their phone drops to something between 95% and 100% in a matter of minutes as long as it's "full" upon disconneting. Seems Google just displays the correct charge instead of pretending to be on 100%.

Pretty much. The G2 with stock firmware (and from what I remember with the Evo 4G w/ stock), HTC charges to 100%, discharges back to 90%, and charges back up again. etc.. The LED charge indicator turns green at 90% (so according to them, anything about 90% is a "full charge").
You can see this in regular use. There are days where my phone sits at 100% for hours, and others where it only takes an hour to tick down do 99%, even with the same usage. Just depends what "state" the battery is at when you pull it off charge in the morning.

Battery not charging properly?

Hi guys,
I'm pretty happy with the device so far, battery life is pretty god (at least for me). I tend to charge the phone every other day, however a couple of times battery has drained completely and after that it gets pretty difficult for the phone to begin charging the battery again.
Either pluged in or wirelessly, phone does not seem to "recognize" that it's being charged. (I've waited for about 15 minutes with the phone pluged in and it just won't charge).
This only happens on drained battery; I don't remember this being an issue on my old S8+.
Please let me know if anyone else has been having the following issue and if so, if you've found the cause or a possible solution (other than "not letting it discharge").

Hi Raul, yes original charger and cable, also wireless charger is Samsung's, but it's the one for the old S8/Note 8 line.
I remenber a similar issue in the days of the note 8, which refused to start charging after depleting the batt, now, just avoid going to zero, as it is really bad for any battery

From my experience,
with charging all my old Android devices,
when battery completely depleted.
I found this to be normal behavior.
Battery takes a quite while to "show" that it's actually charging.Even my old Galaxy Gear watch did this.
I also agree with @winol post that it's not good practice to let battery be completely depleted /flat
