Amon or Clockwork it can happen on both, his backup file probably got corrupted somehow on his sdcard and now it wont restore. It has happened to me before. I normally keep a couple of backups on my phone just incase that happens. Dont think there is anything he can do but make another backup...
I am a former OG Evo Amon lover myself and wish he did a recovery for this phone but the Team Rogue recovery is quite nice as a replacement for Amon at the moment

I had the same issue. Just got my Epic on Tuesday, rooted it, and I needed to restore my backup yesterday. Said the MD5 sums did not match. I'm using EL29, and the Team Rogue recovery, aka CWM 5.0.2.7. I'll check out that link that was posted by Yamuu, for future reference.
I screwed up a file on my SE4GT and ended up in a reboot, which ended up turning the device off. This happened multiple times.
Luckily, (cough!) I had 2 Backups on my sd card.
Well, I got the MD5 mismatch on the most recent Backup. I transferred the folder to another card (cough!) and wasted about an hour and a half trouble shooting, when I Finally thought to try the earlier Backup, which worked.
I've learned a few things, maybe, from this>
1) always have at least 2 back ups in case one fails.
2) check the MD5 sums to make sure they match, but they can corrupt later, I would think.
3) make a Backup to the Internal Storage also (May have less of a chance to corrupt, but I'm unsure of this.)
4) It's quite possible, because the 2 Backups were about a month apart, that I changed the Version of CWM, and that the Version has to match the version used when making the Backup, of which I'm not sure.
But if that was the case , the later backup would have worked, instead of the earlier Backup.
5) Try the other Backup next time

Team Rogue recovery is great for this because it creates the backup and automatically generates the md5 sum, not giving you the option to name it.

Hit the Thanks in error
I was going to say that if you go directly into Recovery from the phone, instead of through ROM Manager, then Team Rogue does Name the Backup, and CWM flashes the Backup.
I made a Backup from ROM Manager to the External SD card, then I also made a another Backup to the Internal Storage, directly from Rogue Recovery.
Of course, CWM is flashing the Nandroid.
With the above being said, is it better to run the backup, whether it's to the internal or SD Card, directly from Rogue Recovery, rather than through ROM Manager, or does it matter?
I write about my experience, as it relates to the op's, and may help others who are having the same issues

Really? Because I don't use Rom Manager at all. I always go thru Rogue Recovery to create and restore backups. Taking the direct route always proves less problematic than alternative methods. Whenever I do, it looks like this, auto generated file name:

I've never used Clockwork so I'm afraid I can't really give you much insight. I might suggest taking 15 min and installing one of the AmonRA recoverys. I've used them since I had a MT3G and they seem to be pretty flawless. As long as you store your backups on your SD card you shouldnt really be at risk of losing anything. Does Clockwork allow you to make and store multiple backups?
Clockwork works just fine for me. I'm not sure what your problem might be.

Your problem most likely is that your battery is too low. Happened to me several times usually if the battery is below 30% or there abouts. Plug your phone in, juice it up and try with at least 50 % battery, should work.
Or, I've heard it can happen if you renamed your backups. I never rename my backups because I've heard it can cause issues like this, so I can't tell you for sure if that's the problem.
I'm guessing battery.
This is really getting frustrating. I did a nandroid backup last night of my Baked Snack install. I then wiped and installed CM6. 5 minutes later I had a problem and restored Baked Snack. And it went right back to a fresh install of Baked Snack. I then flashed AmonRA. Installed CM6. Setup CM6 how I wanted it. Did a nandroid backup in AmonRA. Then wiped and restored it. And I was right back to a fresh install again.

Hey guys,
I have scoured the forums and the web for answers, but have found none. I have everything normally displayed on ClockWorkMod EXCEPT the "nandroid" option. Can anyone shed some light on this?! I have been loyally updating ClockWorkMod but each comes with no "nandroid" option!
I am currently running MIUI 1.9.2 with a Savaged-Zen kernel along with vipermod and Supercharger V6. There is a thread similar to this, only it is in the "Vibrant General" forum and it ends abruptly. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901818
It's not called nandroid. You just go into the recovery and select up backup/restore and then backup.
That's what I've been doing for, like, forever, but was nandroid discontinued or something?
It's still a nandroid backup, it's just not called that in the menu.
Backup - Nandroid
Started out with that backup, but quickly moved to Armon-RA, I have had no issues and all the features work without issue. Most all rom’s that are posted have users that are using the Clockwork, a standard recommendation is to move to Armon-RA. Might be a little pain in the neck to switch, but I don’t think you would want to go back.

It's still a nandroid back up, whether it's clockwork or Amon Ra recovery.
The backups are in a folder called clockworkmod on the sd card.
Thanks for all your answers!
Sorry, avwheeler but I am not switching to Amon Ra.
If your using rom mansger you can backup from there, they don't call it a nandroid but it is. Btw, amon_ra is a much better recovery.in terms of features and stability!

Try backing up contents of sd card onto computer. Then format aka erase sd card using phone and then copy contents from computer back to sd card. I had same problem and that is what worked for me.
i'm using 3.1.0.1 of CW and i recently installed the latest Hawk mod. Have everything setup the way i like and yet when i go to do a backup whether through 3 finger boot or ACS or Rom manager i get the above error. Never had the issue before using any other ROM but can't get past this error. Tried searching but just not finding the answer. I thought about doing a re-install of CW but will that wipe any of my good backups out?
Did you rename your backups? If not there is a string of ADB code you can use to fix the md5 mismatches. I am not on my computer now but I googled Samsung Epic md5 mismatch fix and it was one of hits there.

Man, this happened to me a few times on the CWM 3.1.0.1. I have been testing the ACS Recovery for almost 2 months and it hasn't happened once. You may want to try it out if you can't fix those mismatches. Nandroids will restore from 3.1.0.1 but only if those MD5's match

When I got the MD5 mismatches, it basically screwed up everything that was on my SD card. Its always a good idea to backup everything on your SD card to your PC. For instance, my Epic Touch didn't come with an SD card. I took my class 6 16gig card from my Epic, backed it up and put it in my ET4G. Sure enough, after a week I got a corrupt SD card pop-up saying format was required. I formatted it and put my music, wallpapers, and pictures back on the SD and all is good now. Actually, the phone is a bit faster. Its not fun starting from scratch but sometimes its a blessing in disguise. An Odin, re root, format SD card is good every now and then. If I didn't have that backed up on my lappy, I would have lost 500 songs, tons of apps etc..I learned that the hard way

As the title says I can't restore from backups I just made. I get an oops.....something went wrong. Please check recovery.log, but when I try to move rrecovery.log to sd it gets an error too.
It's not renamed anything with spaces or weird characters.
I flashed cwm and uses that to restore the nandroid I made, but it didn't restore properly and half the apps didn't restore. This has been an issue for a very long time. Accross 2 ssd cards.
Any help is appreciated.

When you backed up and restored did you check the sd ext option. If your rom is utilizing a2sd that's where your apps would be if you are partitioned.

If you aren't using sd-ext, are having this problem with two different SD cards and can't copy the recover.log to your SD card, three things come to mind that could be the problem:
1) Your amon-ra recovery is corrupt somehow and you need to reflash Amon-ra
2) The SD you used when you made the backups was bad or somehow when you made the backups they got corrupted for some reason.
3) The flash memory on your phone (the internal storage) is somehow going/gone and can no longer be read/written correctly. (This wouldn't explain why you can't copy the log file, though).
The first would be relatively easy to check, but if you made the nandroids with a corrupt version of Amon-ra they still might not restore right even if you reflash Amon-ra.
For checking number 2 you could go into your Nandroid directory and try manually extracting the files to see if they are corrupt or not.
If it is the third problem, I guess you would need to RMA/exchange your phone-- not sure how you would actually check for this problem but I guess if you can flash a clean/new ROM and it works fine it probably isn't this.
Good luck!

So is this an issue with the Rezound or the Evo?
If it's with the Rezound then there may be some people with that phone that know more than we know, and therefore may be able to help. If it's with the Evo, then I am not quite sure why this information is relevant.
For the life of me, I cant figure out why I can never restore my back ups after testing out various roms and kernels. I know it has something to do with the kernels and/or recoveries that are used when backing up and restoring but I cant seem to figure it out. Every time I try to restore a backup I usually get an MD5 mismatch and it fails. I THOUGHT that if I did the backup and restore using the SAME kernel/recovery versions that it would work, but that doesnt seem to be working. Is there something I am missing? Ill give you an example in case you have any tips.
I was running Calks v1.5 for awhile, then decided I wanted to try the AOKP rom. As noted in the AOKP thread, to restore, Odin the EL26 CWM kernel/recovery and run a back up. So I Odin the kernel/recovery, ran the backup, then attempted a restore just to see if it worked. Successfully able to restore from within that same CWM session. So I Odin EL26 CWM again, and this time flashed the AOKP and gapps and rebooted into AOKP. No problem there. Messed around with AOKP (which is awesome) but wanted my daily back so I Odin the EL26 CWM again, and tried to restore the Calk 1.5 and got the MD5 mismatch.
What am I doing wrong?
Are you renaming them? They can't have any spaces in the name, must be something like aokp_may10 instead of aokp may 10

Son of a *****!!! lol I definitely renamed the backups after they completed so I would know which one was which. And definitely had spaces in the names. So thats screwing up the MD5 hash? If I rename them back to what they were will they work?
I used to get that all the time if I copied the nandroid off to the pc and back.
Anyway, if that's not the case for you, I think it's because you are on a totally different version of recovery.
Wipe the phone using Calk's Format All, install Calkulin's v1.5 rom from scratch, boot into recovery and THEN do your restore.
Edit: Well, I saw you beat me to it on the post. LOL
I'll be your Plan B then.
