Hey guys like the title says, I can't request desktop sites. Every time I do request it I get a T-Mobile page telling me to make my phone a mobile hotspots. I usually don't oaks around the forums and search for my answers but I just couldn't find one this time haha. Anyone gone through this and fixed it? Thanks in advanced.

Just got it yesterday... it sucks. I'm hoping someone figured it out.
I searched and found something about T-Mobile just looking at uag string or something like that and assume its tethering because of that.
I think martinokaj (or close to that) mentioned it and for him it just left couple weeks later. He tried contacted T-Mobile but it didn't help at all.

Weird. I haven't had this issue with T-Mobile.

Stock browser?
Sigh... they're still doing this.
Basically, T-Mobile rudimentarily checks to see if people are tethering by filtering user agents. They assume that if you're on the phone you'll always have a phone UAstring, and if you're on the desktop you'll always have a desktop UAstring.
Obviously this isn't true... this is the stock ICS browser and you can effectively change your UAstring to get desktop sites. Many other browsers in the market do it too.
Basically you can try to call and ***** them out. I dealt with this mid last year on my G2 because they started spamming me with this on the stock browser and my computer. I can change my UAstring manually on the computer (with a spoofer on Firefox) but its not so easy to change the UAstring and still get desktop pages on the phone.
Long story short of me talking to them and going through many levels/days of support, they claimed to not understand the problem/not be aware of this issue. Even with sending them screenshots of the problem on my phone. Eventually I just dealt with it and a few weeks later it just stopped.
I'm not sure of any other way to deal with this honestly. I suggest you either just wait it out and let it stop, or call in and get several levels up in support.
If you want, you can dig up a thread in the G2/DZ forum where another user and I got to the bottom of how they're doing this. But the basic thing is they think you're tethering for having a desktop UAstring.

Have u tried using a different browser? Not sure if this would help cause it sounds like a T-Mobile thing. I use dolphin which has an add on to show desktop sites. Just a suggestion. Glad I have Verizon as I've never had this issue.

They're filtering all traffic identified as a desktop UAstring. Doesn't matter the browser.

I can't figure this out. When I attempt to go to lite.facebook.com Opera just times out using 3G, but using WiFi it works fine. This site has always worked fine before. I don't know whats changed. Any ideas?
Stock ATT ROM
ps. it does the same thing with PIE
They started to block it on mobiles I think. Try m.facebook.com or touch.facebook.com
Those two options continue to work, nothing has chsnged with those. It just seems to be the lite version. Can anyone else with a Touch Pro 2 (At&t) try lite.facebook.com and see if it works for them via 3G?
Very interesting. I tried it on my AT&T branded Rhodium with the ROM specs in my signature, but it won't load. I even tried toggling the AT&T hidden proxy, but to no avail. The most interesting thing is that it loads immediately when I enable Opera Turbo on Opera Mobile 10 Beta Update 2 and refresh, so it seems that bugsykoosh is correct about it being blocked for one reason or another.

same result here, but i mainly use touch.facebook.com, didn't know lite.facebook.com existed till reading this thread.
I got lite.facebook.com to work on my Sprint TP2 using wifi and 3g with no problems. I used the stock version of Opera that came with the phone.
Hmmm, I wonder if AT&T is somehow blocking this. As stated above Opera mini works just fine as well. Must have something to do with the server side rendering.
As noted by a previous poster running Sprint, they can access lite.facebook.com just fine. Whatever changed, changed in the last few days.
Maybe I'll hit up an At&T store today and see if their phones are doing the same thing.
...by the way, I just now checked out my wifes iPhone and she cannot access lite.facebook.com via Safari either. Starting to look like an AT&T thing.
Wow, lite.facebook is much better!! Didn't know about it until reading this thread. I tried touch.facebook, and it isn't up to date (info can be several days old), forget about the lousy WM Facebook app. Very cool. I've been using the full facebook.com on my TP2, and it's annoying (with the bottom toolbar).
I'm on Verizon using The EnergyROM Leo 23518 Jan 25.
Yeah, I prefer it over touch.facebook as well, that's why I was using it. But of course I can't now for some unknown reason. Since you're using Verizon I would guess that's why you can access it.
Any T-mobile folks out there want to try to access this site lite.facebook.com? Let's try a few more AT&T users also just to be sure.

T-mobile (US)- comes up just fine on my TP2 in IE, I get the login page with the balloons right away.
you guys got it! http://www.mobilitydigest.com/att-is-blocking-facebook-lite/
AT&T is definitely blocking Facebook Lite. I disabled/enabled the hidden proxy and it toggled my ability to get to the site. Turning on Wifi also permits me to get to the site. Now the big question...WTF? Why are they doing it?
I can't seem to get it either, and this is a very recent change.
I tried lite.facebook.com, and received a gateway error last evening. I am on AT&T, and seemed to have a good connection when I tried (was able to bring up another site). Just tried it NOW, and it comes right up...
Dang, sucks to be ya'll.
This is why I joined T-Mobile.
Works perfectly fine, and I just heard about it also thanks to this thread
Why would they block it, it's unreasonable.
It looks like it could be back up again today for everyone...it could have been something as simple as a DNS error on one of AT&T's proxy servers.

You're right! It seems to be working again, for now. Maybe the posts here in this thread, and over at Mobility Digest (Thanks David K) caught somebody's attention.
Hope it lasts.
By the way, when I talked with a customer service person over at my local AT&T store yesterday they told me they no nothing about a block but had no explanation for why ALL of their phones in the store couldn't access lite.facebook.com.
Similar but different
So... I'm having a similar, yet different problem accessing facebook on my Fuze with Opera Mobile 10. www.facebook.com works just fine, touch.facebook.com works fine, even lite.facebook.com works fine, but m.facebook.com no longer works on my end (FYI: Oklahoma City)!!! I liked m.facebook.com better than any of them, but now it's the only facebook.com address I CANNOT access :S Is anyone else getting this result? It used to be that trying to navigate to www.facebook.com would redirect me to m.facebook.com... but now that doesn't even happen. What's even weirder, I think, was that m.facebook.com worked fine this morning. Now I'm getting a "Connection Refused: m.facebook.com:80" error!!!
UPDATE: I just tried m.facebook.com with IE on my phone... and it, kinda, works. It comes in all jumbled with mismatching text and it took forever for it to load. It shouldn't take that long to launch a MOBILE version of this site :/
I keep having to enter my login and password every time I access lite.facebook.com despite selecting to "remember me". Anyone experiencing the same issue?
Please, be gentle, since this is my first thread ever.
I was reading up on this information at AndroidPolice.com regarding Sprint blocking tethering apps from the Market.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...locking-tethering-apps-in-the-android-market/
In Art Russ's G+, some people were commenting about the ability of Sprint reading NAT Headers to find out whether you're tethering or not
https://plus.google.com/111991876596496628445/posts
I'm not actively using tethering, in fact I haven't even rooted the E4GT yet, but I did have my former Evo3D rooted to tether to my Asus Transformer.
Now my wife has CM7 on her HP Touchpad, and I still have my Asus Transformer. I'd like to be able to tether to them if we're on a trip somewhere away from the house, but I don't like having "big brother" knowing that I'm doing so.
Summarizing, can they detect tethering, more specifically, to Android (Honeycomb/2.3 version CM7 uses on Touchpad) tablets? figured maybe if the machine tethered was running android it would end up being the same or similar "header" (or whatever is called/checked) and wouldn't matter, but I could be way far off.
Please, let me know. Also, please, no bashing; in case this was answered previously. I took the time to search but didn't find this specific case commented after the "iPhone effect". If you find this has been answered elsewhere, please provide me with a link to that discussion so I can read up on it.
Thank you, and best regards.
I don't know about Sprint (I haven't heard of any instances myself) but AT&T has been sending notices to people about automatically changing their accounts to a more expensive tethering plan for awhile now. With AT&T it doesn't seem to matter what you tether to, they catch you. There's posts in either the Atrix forums or Inspire forums on Xda about it, I forget which.
Edit: The thread is in the Atrix general forum, there's over 400 posts.

Download Foxfi to your phone, its off the market so do a Google search for it and then get PDAnet Tablet app for your tablet or PDAnet for your desktop or laptop. They all work flawlessly for tethering...
Ive been running custom roms on my E4GT that come with a hacked version of Sprints Hotspot and i tether my tablet,laptop,etc...and ive been doing it for about 7 months or so and ive never had any problems or issues from Sprint. I also do the same thing with my Evo 4G thats runnin MikG 3.11 rom, that also has Sprints Hotspot hacked for free use. However i have heard of a few ppl recieving letters from sprint bcuz they were using a hacked Sprint hotspot,or wifi tether app,for free, but they only recieved those letters bcuz they were using around 40GB,or more, data a month. One excuse to use would be that u stream Netflix to ur LCD/LED tv via ur devices micro hdmi output to the hdmi input on ur tv. just my 2 cents.

Can sprint detect tethering? Almost certainly yes, by any number of ways - NAT info, web browser user agent string, types of traffic.
Are they actively seeking out users tethering at the current time? Not that we know of.
I've been (very infrequently) tethering on Sprint since Windows Mobile 6.x, and had no trouble. Think of it like your neighbor's open WiFi - using it sparingly and infrequently, and no one will notice or mind. But if you start torrenting/downloading like crazy, eventually someone's going to smack you. (all of us?)

There are apps that mask that type of information at the present moment. This question is asked every couple of months. I suggest you google search and look up the hundreds of threads about this and see if anyone has gotten themselves in any trouble. Remember the ones who tether and not like the user above said not the ones who use torrents...
If you do find 1 just 1 please post back here I would like to meet them....
Well I claim to be pretty good with phones and its not often i`m stumped on stuff like this.
I really need help though? My Nexus keeps talking to me!!
Its only on the web and some other web based apps like youtube. It will read out the letters as i`m typing into Google. It will read whole web pages to me too.
I have gone through the settings many times over. Def checked that Talkback was off. I have no idea whats making it do it.
My last Nexus did it too so I know its not a faulty handet.
Maybe an app I installed or a setting I just dont know about?
Anyone know what it is???

I noticed once I setup my google account it downloaded all my Market apps. Could you have a 3rd party app loaded which was downloaded to your last Nexus and current device which is reading the text outloud?
If you weren't sure, you could post up your list of 3rd party apps and I'm sure somebody might be able to recognize the issue?
Also, does it always happen on specific web pages or on all different web sites? perhaps you could record it and post up as somebody might recognize the voice pattern or web pages it reads?
Trying to gather more information in hopes of getting a more specific solution. Throwing out ideas .. hope that helps!

you must have accidently enable this.
its a feature of ICS. take a look.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnw8vh9y36Q&feature=player_embedded
unfortunately, i am not sure how to turn it off.
I HAD THIS ISSUE!
Drove me around the bend blurting out everything I went near on the net!
i spent about 2 hours clicking round , retracing steps, reclicking on things...suddenly it stopped.
Only thing I remember doing was opening up default.prop file in viewer out of curiosity so I did this again as well as other things and it stopped. Have you been viewing or even tinkering with any system files?
If this doesnt help try:
Go into your apps list and disable the TalkBack inbuilt app. That may mitigate the problem.

Ok I have disabled TalkBack app. No joy
I have not done anything to any files. Like i say it did this on my last Nexus so i`m guessing it may be an app i have installed.
Just wondering if its caused by Lightflow. That is the only app that asks for accessibilty on my phone.
Might try uninstalling.
Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
I spoke to Samsung last night and they went through some settings then said my handset is faulty!
I know its not and i arent changing it again, this is my 3rd one already!!
I had the same issue just from turning Talkback on and off... Like I really want to hear the time everytime I hit the power button ffs. I think it's fixed now (*touch wood*) but I had to screw around in the settings turning it off repeatedly to get it to stop working...
Did you just get your phone? I had the same issue when I got mine too. This wasn't just on webpages or YouTube app. This was EVERYWHERE. If I opened the app drawer, it would be like "launcher" or if I swiped to a different homescreen, it would say "screen 2" or something. I went to accessibility in the settings and turned off "Talkback". The phone stopped reading stuff to me after that.

Last I heard, T-Mobile was using User Agent filtering to detect tethering... If your desktop browsers can spoof a mobile browser, you may be able to get around it.
Sidenote: some folks get the tethering warning on their device simply because they change the UserAgent string to reflect a desktop browser. It's pretty silly.
Thanks for the link but I keep getting the same page that comes up when I'm trying to surf. Something like "please buy our tethering plan". It blocks every page I try to go to. That is what I'm trying to get around.

I had the same exact problem when trying to login to HTC dev. It would kick me out every time i would login. I found out that the date on my computer was wrong so i changed it and boom, it worked! Make sure that your date and time is accurate and see if it works. Hope this helps
I have been trying this on multiple computers, multiple browsers, with correct time settings I might add...and to no avail. Maybe this is there way of telling us to piss off and not mod our phones...might possibly be the last HTC I buy honestly. Great phone, but I have no way to make it better after it has hit the 1 year mark and my warranty is up.
