Dropped my phone in water and... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So yesterday after I got home drunk I showered and I got out. When I grabbed my phone to get out of bathroom it slipped out of my hand and fell in the pool of water. My phone was completely submerged in the water. So I instantly dropped everything rescuing my phone and it was dripping wet =-O... and you know what happened to it? NOTHING! I was sure my phone was history but nothing happend how is this possible???
I want to know if something like this has ever happened to someone. Have you ever broke your phone in any way and you were just like wtf just happened?

I've dropped my phone in water and the water was immediately destroyed. I loved my Nokia.

I would definitely take battery out and leave phone in bag of rice for a day just to be sure. But that's just me

Seriously dude, you need to let that thing air out for a day. I HIGHLY recommend disassembling it.
Believe it or not, the majority of phones we reject for liquid damage are not because of standing water short-circuiting the board or it's components, but rather water that has been left sit, and the board then corrodes. Alot of the effects of water on the board are not realized until after the water has sat for a while, and components start to calcify or rust. Just because the phone didn't fail immediately, does NOT mean you don't have a ticking time bomb of water in there.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

If he ever brings it in for repair, they will notice immediately that it was exposed to water.

i dropped mine in water a few weeks ago at work. the battery cover came off and the battery got soaked. after it dried over night it worked, but acted weird for a few weeks. now its like nothing ever happened

I generally do not recommend rice, as it's pretty much a red herring for us to start looking for minute corrosion. Taking this phone apart is not difficult, all that is required is a small Phillips head and plastic thin enough to wedge between the screen and the bezel (or long fingernails lol).
Pat dry wet spots with a soft cloth; if youre really ambitious you can scrub small amounts of denatured alcohol on affected areas.

I used a air compresser on full blasted everything. Took battery out and everything and used that air. Lets see what happens. Strange thing is the white battery indicator didn't turn red. I honestly think I took that thing out of the water so fast nothing happened. Hopefully it'll stay working.

That's a good idea. Chances are that there is still water inside, for that reason, I would suggest letting it dry for a couple days. It's completely up to you, but the water will only harm the electronics if the phone is actually on. It only takes one drop in the wrong spot and it's all over, know what I mean? And it has been mentioned before, but they will not cover it if you bring it in, because they will see it has been in water.

It may not fail now but it will fail on you when you need it the most. Corrosion is a mother.

This happened to me after I got home from my friends house. I was drunk and am tipsey now lol. Well I was soaking my feet in my bath tub and on the phone with my best friend and my phone fell and was submerged for a good 2-3 seconds but it did have a ballistic case on it. Immediately pulled it out took off the case pulled the battery sucked on every port to see if there was any water and left it on a radiator all night. Put battery in next day nothing was wrong.
Edit I asked him the next day I was like my phone fell in water and he's like no wonder you sounded so distant. I was like holy ****ing **** I was pissed at the time.

I been on sprint network ever since they came to Los Angeles... Idk 15 years. Had the Sanyo contractor grade flip phone... IM a plumber... Was running some copper pipe in a ditch and my Sanyo slipped from shirt pocket into a pool of water.... I swear I heard it make a couple of electrical short circuit hisses and Sparks just before I plucked her from the water. I took off the back cover and removed the battery. Then I placed the shop vacuum hose on the back of phone, plugged it in and let it suck it dry for 30 minutes. Then I left it on my hot auto dash for another hour. After that the phone powered on and worked well for two more years.

Even having your phone in your pocket on hot days can get moisture going inside your phone. I got my Nexus wet by a glass of spilled water and the camera stopped working. I immediately opened it up and let it dey out. Everything except the camera worked perfect. I finally (after a few months) took it to a repair store (I always insure my phones) and the tech replaced the camera and no go. He then showed me how the corrosion started spreading through the phone. Luckily he hooked me up and ordered me another one after seeing my Epic Touch otherwise I would have had to pay the deductible. Moral of the story...even be careful keeping your phone in your pockets if you think you may get sweaty. I have a velvet pouch I keep mine in now. Also squshy knows his stuff when it comes to care/repair of these devices.

ET4G waterproof?

Well mine seems to be, at least to some degree. Happened a few weeks ago after throwing back a few brews. Phone was in my hoodie side pocket with no case.
Went tie my pants (was wearing scrubs) after taking a piss, and the phone slipped right into the toilet. Even in my state of non-sobriety I quickly grabbed the phone. I don't think it was completely submerged at any point. Made the mistake of not turning it off immediately, b/c the phone never turned off by itself. I even tried making a call to see if anything was damaged, against my better judgement. Then I realized I was being an idiot and needed to just let it dry out.
I let it dry out for 24 hours in a rice bag. Not sure if that actually does anything, but I was up for trying anything at that point.
Thank the heavens, phone works without any problems. Hopefully there are no long term problems with the circuitry. I did make sure to clean it thoroughly after the incident
Anyone else with any close calls?

first thing I would have done is pull the battery and give it a good disinfecting then let it dry.. Hopefully it was your house bathroom, if not even grosser lol I knew a guy once that dropped his blackberry into a toilet in a bar and just left it there. lol

I lost mine in a urinal at the Cracker Barrel, which is a relitivly clean establishment. If it was a bar, I dunno. First thing I did was get some paper towel and toss my phone in the sink for a quick rinse, then I wrapped it up in more paper towel so I wouldn't get infected my urinal nastiness.

How my brother's S3 survived a swim

While my brother was up north with his friends, he ended up going tubing with his phone in his pocket. He fell off into the lake 4 times. He did not do anything (didn't open it up to dry, just left it in his pocket) until he got home 6 hours later. I took it and put it in rice for a couple of hours and it would turn on and either boot loop or go really really slow. He was going to pay TEP $100, but I odined it to see if the flash memory got corrupted and then it worked fine!

Some companies say your phone is relatively safe from submersion up to certain depths, given you don't just let it sit there and soak (you could drop it in accidentally and snatch it back up real quick). The depth most certainly matters.

I agree with that. Another factor though the OP didn't bother removing the power asap can save parts from short circuiting. I had a previous phone survive a short submersion but I removed it asap and the the battery and dried it as much as possible. the screen was weird for few days but it dried out eventually and looked normal. The original poster was lucky. Removing power asap before worrying about removing moisture may be a good priority. Amazing feat for a phone in that boat ride.

Green stain underneath glass

A few days ago a green 'stain' appeared underneath the glass. It's been changing and growing very slowly. Has anyone else seen anything like this or know how it may be fixed?
The phone has never had anything spilled on it, although I often bring it in the bathroom when i shower and a few drops of water have gotten on the screen occasionally. I first noticed the stain Sunday after dropping the phone on a carpeted floor on Saturday with no ill effects.
Looks like your LCD is busted.

I'm pretty sure that's a pressure spot.
if it is, and you're extremely lucky, if you turn the phone off for a few days it'll go away.
if it is, and you're extremely un-lucky, then there's no way to fix and you need to get it repaired (replace screen and stuffs)
that happened to my touchpad, the first couple of times it went away, the last time it's stayed for about 3 months now. (I thought it was happening because it was cold outside and I routinely had my tp in my bag with books and stuff, I only discovered what a pressure spot this last time because it happened when it was warm outside and never went away )
Had the same problem with my last Evo4g. It actually was quiet a bit worse than yours. I activated my pos back up and set the EVO aside for a whole week (powered off). Turned it back on after the week had passed and sure enough, it disappeared. Good luck.

My One X fell in the toilet!

Okay so yesterday I laid my One X on the edge of the washing machine which is next to the toilet, and of course I managed to push it down there by accident. Really stupid of me I know.
After a few seconds I collected my thoughts and realized what the f just happened and put my hand down there, which was kind of disgusting. Luckily for me and my phone there were no nasty stuff there.
I immediately wiped it off and put it in rice. It still worked fine, so I thought it was okay. After a few hours though I could hear it make a noise, and it was dead after that. No sign of life what so ever. I still left it in the rice until I went to bed, but it was still dead:crying: I was kinda worried what my boss might say, because my work paid for the phone.
Now here is the good stuff. This morning I thought I would check on it again, and by some miracle it worked! I have tested it throughout the day, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Pretty awesome eh?
**** - You know I always use my HOX on the loo at work and a few times, I have came close to dropping it in, much easier to do if you have no case as it can be slippy.
Yeah that makes sense it just wanted time to dry out ... Your a lucky man

Being serious its annoying all phones aren't ' waterproof'. It's not difficult particularly for the manufacturer I think.
I used to work in the automotive industry with a major chassis systems supplier and everything had a conformal coating on it. Really everyday stuff for everyday cars. The F1 power boat boys took our stuff and ran it fully submerged in salt water and it all worked flawlessly too I understand. No reason why phones shouldn't be so if made and tested right I think.

i heard a rumor that one x is kinda waterproof, thanks to the annoying unremovable back cover. How ever you are very lucky it didnt die, you should opened it and dried it before turning it on.
I still suggest sending it to a reputable service centre to dry it, if you can't do it yourself, there might be some water inside and the metal contacts will corrode slowly.
Note: if the back pogo pins start turning green-blueish(copper corrosion) this is an indication that there is still water inside.
Fell in Sink
Mine once fell in sink full of dish washing water, so before going to bed I took out its battery and laid it on a sponge and then nest morning it started making bubbles (kidding), it did not work next morning but It started partially the other morning and now its working fine

RAZR M Durability Stories

Hows your M been holding up over the coarse of your experience?
Only a few scuffs on the bezel here, but I use a medium strength case when out and about

So far, so good. No case, and I've had it about a month. No scratches, scuffs, or anything.
Mine developed a pretty nasty scratch on the screen--how, I don't know. I can feel it with my fingertip too, which is quite annoying.
I've had mine about 6 months or so, and I've been using it without any case or screen protector. Dropped it many times, even on concrete. Just few scratches on bezel. Nothing on the screen.
Had mine close to a year now. Bought a case, rarely use it. Dropped it hard on icy cement from a standing position. Which an iPad user found hilarious mimicking the "Droid" startup sound immediately. Picked up the phone, worried, looked at it and it virtually smiled at me. Not a scratch anywhere. Not on the back, not on the screen, and none on the corners.

I have a case but rarely use it since it makes it feel bulky in my pocket. I have dropped it many times and really the only scratches on the bezel are there because I keep my phone in the same pocket as my keys.
No case, but I do have a screen protector. had first drop today off desk and onto one of the legs of my chair, but the cracking sound I heard seemed to be the chair. Phone came out unharmed
I have a barely there case along with generic screen saver and mine looks like the day I got it (not a single scratch or blemish). I have dropped it about 10 times and NOTHING. bought mine used btw and it was flawless when I received it. By far the most durable phone I've had so far. Motorola phones in general seem well built.
I'm somewhat of an idiot and decided to test how water proof it was. Fully submerged it seems it could stay there for some time and not be damaged

Had. A Droid X without a case and dropped it a bunch of time even on the road while riding the motorcycle. No crack on the screen, but badly damaged in the body and backplate. Got really impressive by Motorola phone then got myself a Razr M without a case as well. Dropped it several time and got a really small scratches on the bezel, but other than that it's surely a really damn tough phone ever.

Dropped onto foot then kicked across uneven concrete sidewalk, leading to small scuffs on back bezel corners. Once smacked it into the rim of a glass, causing a small dent in the bezel. Other than that it's been good.

Yeah, I accidentally knocked mine into the bathroom sink full of water. The micr-sd card was already on its last legs and the water finished it off. And the external speaker wasn't as loud as normal for about a day and a half until it completely dried out. But it works fine now and the sd card was replaced by sandisk's warranty.
I've dropped mine an innumerable number of times on concrete with no damage to usability. My OCD hates the scratches on the bevel, but nothing on the screen or elsewhere. The worst I've had is the bottom part of the case came loose one time when I really, really hit it hard on the ground. Still going fine...
Dropped mine taking out of my pocket, cracked the back glass thing. Then dropped in water sink for a sec accidentally, phone wouldn't work for about a day, now it's fine though. Just not waterproof anymore

too tough
Some time back I was driving a 1994 Cadillac, disgusted with how my conversation had gone, i threw my Iphone4S on to my dashboard, where it bounced and hit the windshield, and shattered the phone beyond useability.... that's what put me in the market for a new phone.
Grabbed a Razr M, and in short time history repeats itself....threw it against the dash, into the glass....the Razr M spidered the windshield....... happy to know I can replace a windshield in a 2006 Dodge Ram for $155, that still $44 less than the deductible for the Iphone4s.

How about this one? This happened the 1st day I had the phone. I was roofing house and the phone accidently slipped out of my hand. I watched it slide down the roof and disappear over the edge then I heard it hit the concrete walkway 2 stories below. I didn't even bother to look at it or let alone want to go pick up the pieces as I figured it was destroyed. 2 of my workers saw the whole thing happen and kept busting me about killing my new phone in less than a day. A couple minutes later I heard a phone ringing and yelled for someone to answer it. The other 2 guys on the roof with me both responded that it wasn't their phone. It took a while for it to dawn on me that it was my phone I had just dropped ringing on the ground below so I decided to investigate. I climbed down the ladder and was amazed to find the phone in one piece with the screen side up. I picked it up hit the power button and was shocked when the screen turned on and had no cracks. I have no idea how the phone actually impacted the concrete after falling off the roof but the only damage was some scrapes on the bezel. I consider the build quality and design of this phone to be amazing especially compared to a friends S3 which didn't survive a fall from a kitchen counter after being swatted by his cat.
Great story! However, in this one, the cat is the Legend!

So I've finally had an incident the old lady and I we're in the midst of a fight and she throws out there you love your phone more than me so to prove a point I throw it at the wall pretty much as hard as I can and of course it goes to the wall unlike other phones which have shattered into pieces.... thinking the worst I'm like oh well... patch up the hole and forget about it... I get home later that day and she meets me at the door saying that we have mice in the wall... I knew when she said that what it was... I tell her to call my phone and sure enough the rattle in the wall she had been hearing was my phone... I cut it out and nothing but some dry wall on the corner... after a vigorous scrub you can't even tell....
