No it's not. You can flash by choosing 'flash zip' it's there for ease of use I suppose.

Could I just flash it by the ROM name?

Absolutely

Of course when flashing roms make sure you have ClockworkMod Recovery installed before flashing roms.

You need to rename zip files update.zip only if you are using the stock recovery which you shouldn't be using.

Installation aborted
Are you sure about this? Because the name of my file is E3_STOCK_V8072_CWM_R3.zip, midway of installation, I encounter Installation Aborted... So if I rename that to update.zip will my problem solve? So I'll give it a try. Please reply.

You could try flashing CWM using Odin. Also, questions go in the Q&A forum.
Post two more times in this thread and you'll be able to tell Marcus about it in his thread

If you've flashed twrp and are on Mtd you cannot just Odin in cwm again. You must flash the restore .zip

Don't do this... if your on mtd, which you are if your using twrp you can't odin in any recovery... you either have to odin to complete stock or hope the restore.zip ends up working... or a kernel flash works....

Gonna have to odin back to stock and start over. Everything you need can be found in the sticky in development how to unbrick... (while its not a brick, this is the method you need)

Cannot Flash Custom ROMS on phone

Hi all,
I am new to android as my personal device, but I am familiar with the OS. I am pretty tech-savvy. However, I just rooted my I-747, and no matter how hard I try I cannot flash custom roms through CWM. Keep in mind both ROMS I have tried are CM9 and 10, 10 ending in a status 7 error. 9 might have as well, but I am not sure. I just know that it was aborted. Any help here, I am not sure what is going on? Any advice would be appreciated.
Are you using the correct CWM recovery? I am downloaded rom manager and installed cwm from there, have had no issues with installing either of those roms. Don't forget to do your wipes before you install a new rom!
Hmmm that may be the issue. I rooted without tripping the flash counter and then had to use adb to get cwm working. Is there a way to uninstall it and reinstall it from Rom manager?

You can always try TWRP out as well.
Just push it to the phone via ADB or use a terminal app on the phone.
I like it more than CWM. :good:

Hey codycorexxx.... quick question on that. I have twrp as well...might sound silly...will it restore a CWM backup? I made a copy of my nanorid backup to the twrp folder. It shows up under the restore option when IN that recovery...just wanting to make sure should I need to use that backup....twrp won't have a problem flashing it.

Good thing you asked. Who knows what might have happened. I just remember reading in the TWRP thread it was incompatible. Not gonna take any risks trying myself haha.

How do I install CWM touch? Phone is already rooted and has CWM installed.

Like the title says. The phone is already rooted using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
Cyanogen says I need to install CWM for -d2att to install CWM, so how do I go about doing that? I downloaded the .img from http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Tried doing it through Rom manager and recovery but the file isn't showing up there. I have no idea what to do now.
Any help is appreciated.

The answers you got in Task's threads still stand. It's either that you have to update your cwm (make sure it's d2att) or you'll have to use TWRP.
You can also redownload or
cut out a line in the updater script but I don't suggest that.

You need to update your recovery. Either use rom manager or, if you can't boot up, download an cwm flashable zip located at the bottom of post #2 in my signature link. Place it on a micro sd card and flash it in recovery. Go to advanced and reboot recovery. Flash rom and gapps again
Either your recovery is outdated, or you are trying to flash a device that isn't displaying itself as an i747 (d2att). This could be because your using a Canadian version of the s3, or your trying to flash the att Rom on a tmo, vzw, or Sprint version of the phone.

[Q] Having Trouble Flashing CyanogenMod 10

So I successfully rooted my S3 (Bell I747M), installed TWRP recovery, booted into the recovery, created a backup (thank god!), wiped using TWRP (factory reset -> wipe dalvik -> wipe cache -> wipe data) and then went into install, selected the CyanogenMod zip and swiped to flash. Failed. Every time. I tried numerous wipes but flashing CM just kept on failing. So I got fed up and restored to my backup.
But I really want CM! One more maybe-important thing is that when I was installing TWRP, it said my device was d2can, even though my device is actually I747M. But I remember when downloading CM I had to download the d2att version (that was listed as the one compatible with my I747M), but TWRP was saying d2can and not giving me the option to choose anything else so I just went with it.
Please try and help me!
Did you download the d2att version of cm?

Hmm alright, are you able to flash any other roms?
I had a similar issue and im trying to recall what I did to overcome this..
EDIT: I think I remember. I flashed a different CWM version and for some reason it prevented me from flashing CM10.1.. Do a google search for "CanadaGS3CWM6.0.1.2.tar" and let me know if it works. If you cant find it shoot me a PM and ill look for it.
Thanks for the reply.
I haven't tried flashing any other room but I have successfully flashed a debloating software made by mrRobinson.
Also‚ I'm not using CWM‚ I'm using TWRP. I installed it through the GooManager app found in the Play store.
If I have already installed TWRP then will I still be able to install that CWM file you are suggesting I install?
It is late now and I am going to bed but I'll be back on tomorrow evening to try again so I'll try what you said then.

I think the issue is that I'm trying to flash a d2att ROM on a TWRM that thinks I'm on a d2can device when in reality I'm on an I747M. The d2att is said to work on the I747M on CyanogenMod's website though so I think the issue is flashing the d2att when TWRP thinks I'm on a d2can.
Anyone have a clue as to what to do about that?

You'll need a d2att version of twrp. You can get the odin flammable file off their website.
You'll also need to verify your boot loader is up to date. Many people having the same problem.
Simple search will get you both things.

Yup just in odin like a root file. It goes in the pda section. Uncheck reboot,. When it finishes unhook the cable pull the battery and than reboot into recovery after. Sometimes the flash doesn't stick after a reboot.
Cm10.1 has a release candidate out right now rc4 it's pretty stable.
You'll need to make sure your bootlader is up to date before you flash it though.

The second link has the latest boot loaders sorry I should have mentioned that. It has to match the one listed.
I don't know what you downloaded but the twrp recovery off their site should be the .tar to load in odin. The .img file you'd have to load using adb. Easier to use the odin file. No unzipping just flash with odin.

Btw, CM10.1 RC5 is pretty stable with good battery life.
Could you please tell me what method was used? I have a Bell GS3 as well. I followed this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 to get root and recovery today. I have now tried flashing CM10.1 using the latest CWM and TWRP d2att recoveries and neither work. I'm giving up for today but will try again after work tomorrow. I've read stuff about changing the build.prop files to trick the phone but I don't know where to start.
Thanks,
Spike
