Does anyone know if this one has a built in speaker or if you have to plug speakers into it. (or just uses the phone's speaker) ?

I believe it does have its own speaker, mainly due to the fact that in the dock settings in your phone, it gives you the option of putting the audio through there.

I have the dock. It has a little hole to amplify the phone speaker. But I don't think it is an actual speaker. You can play music and watch movies but it isn't very loud and by no means high quality. It does have a jack to plug external speakers in. I use mine for my bedside alarm clock and it works well for that.

Anyone else seeing very low audio levels through the car dock? Anyone have a fix for this?
(example, my car radio through the dock is turned up to 36 and is still lower than the handset itself when the radio is set to 20-25)
I haven't noticed the audio being any quieter but I have noticed the quality isn't as good as some other phones i've owned. When at full volume it seems to peak easily on the highs and lows. I assume you've turned the volume up when the audio jack is plugged into the phone?

yeah, the volume is all the way up. I'm going to test my room mates car dock and see if maybe i just got a defect.

I messed with the eq settings and they don't seem to effect the output much. I tried my roommates dock and his is rather low output too. ('m only compairing the output difference from the headphone jack to the dock output.)
I took apart the dock to see if I could find any modifiable pieces, but it simply has two boards (one for input one for output) and a few unidentifiable chips (probably usb ID and audio decoder built in) As for now, I've just stopped using it. Gonna call Motorola Monday, to see if they have any advice.
Yeah, i'm having the same problem
Try to get them to send you another one to try. Mine sounds the same as just using the 3.5mm jack.

Wait.. you guys have a car dock that has audio out but doesn't use the 3.5mm jack? Audio out from what? HDMI?
What's the name of this car dock?

Yeah, the Motorola one has audio out of the micro usb.
Called Motorola, and after about 5 minutes of, 'turn your phone off then back on' bs, the lady told me to return it to at&t. I'm amazed at the level of superior customer service. /sarcasm
At this point, if anyone is interested, there is a product called Boostaroo that will boost 3.5mm headphone jack output, and it runs on 12v. I'm probably going to pick one of these up and wire it inline with my car dock. They are about $50, which sucks, but if it'll work, I'll be happy. Will advise when I get it in.
My wife and I just tried her Atrix in her car both via 3.5 mm and USB and both sounded the same. Maybe you do have a bad phone *shrugs* I will try to go check on mine after it charges, if I remember.
Sounds fine from my car dock, same as my iPhone that was hooked up through a direct iPod video cable. How are you plugging it into your headunit in your car?
I have a 3.5mm aux port, and we've tried both phones, on both docks, and get the same result.
I have the car dock and the level is great. Yesterday I was listening to music while parked. I got a text and the volume went low after the text message and stayed low.. I think it went back up after the next text or something weird like that...
Thinking about making my mobile experience consolidated. I want a descent mount, power and audio for my epic.
How about this for power:
http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Power-Ca...VZ5E/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1317670360&sr=8-9
This for a mount (first option is cheaper with above power and doesn't cover buttons):
http://www.proclipusa.com/default.a...d=&parent_category=4&d_pcat=13451&d_cat=18521
As far as audio, I don't have an aux in for my radio. I can get it with a few different mods that have provide aux input and/or bluetooth pairing to phone. I'm thinking life would be easier with a hardwire to the headphone port. My Sirius/Pandora would still stop if I had a incomming call. But does the mic on the phone work if there is something plugged into the speaker jack? Is there a way to rig something to the phone jack that inclues a mic (kinda like the earbuds that came with our epics)?
I looked at some expensive options that have bluetooth displays and onboard sync to phone contacts? Why bother.. we already have a great display and easy acces to contact?
Would this work?
http://www.amazon.com/Cellet-3-5mm-...S1QI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317671877&sr=8-1
Just don't even know if it'd be necessary.

I have my GNex mounted while I drive so that I can use the GPS. When I try to use voice controls on the freeway (ambient car noise is louder), I have to lean really close to the phone and yell for it to pick anything up.
Is it possible to use the heaphones/mic that came with the GNex so that sound comes out of the phone's main speakers (not the headphones), but it uses the mic on the headphones?
Might there be another free/cheap solution that I haven't thought of?
Strange. When I use it in my car I just set the phone in my lap and talk as normal (maybe a slightly raised voice) and don't have any issues. This is even the case on the highway with a relatively loud 3" turbo-back exhaust rumbling below me.
I have that problem too, I have to constantly yell at my phone while driving in the car. Any suggestions?

Haven't had any problems with yelling, but as of now the second u plug something into that headphone jack sound goes out whatever is plugged in, and you can't change the output as you would on a PC. I do use my bluetooth tho and then it'll pick up voice search and it won't push sound out anywhere except your main speaker. Plus they are dirt cheap now adays. Hell i think costco gives them out free

Ah, I didn't know bluetooth didn't push out to the earpiece. Nice. I may have to look into that
when i plug my phone into my car to play music its fine. when i use my car charger and play music at the same time tis fine but the second the music stop i hear a static noise from my speakers (which is attached to my galaxy)
this static noise is an imitation of whatever my car is doing at that moment (if im reving the engine the static will resemble the revs, same with turn signals)
anyone else experiencing this problem?
It's feedback from the car electrical system. Usually a bad alternator ground or corroded battery cables, or even the cables going to the starter.

Damn, I was hoping this wasn't a problem on the gs3. It is probably the only true thing I don't like abut my skyrocket.
I'm assuming it isn't a stock deck? Check your ground and of possible try a new location.
All in all though, Androids micro USB is a horrible horrible connection. Every Android phone I have ever owned makes some sort of hissing sound while charging and listening to audio through the headphone jack. Even the Google Nexus does. But the iphone doesn't. Go figure.

On my i747m, I could not use the USB port to listen to music while I was charging via cigarette lighter. There is a definite design flaw. I bought an Ibolt dock and am not able to use it the way it is intended. Even when I wired it myself from scratch (I'm a sound tech) it failed.
Not only does it make white noise and static between songs, but there is some kind of GATE that kicks in 1 or 2 secs after any music pause....it cuts the noise in half but it still remains...and the act of cutting, is an irritant in itself. Further more, even when your playing music, the NOISE is fighting for sonic real estate. I can hear it. I am trained.
So for me, I am running the audio out of the headphone jack. It's 98% better but still not 100%. I don't get the classic REV issue...which has to do with grounding and/or cable shielding. But, if I was you, I would go to The Source store and pick up a Ground Isolator. They have one specific for car issues like yours.
Its a ground loop.

It MIGHT... be a ground loop.
It might NOT.
Read my post #7.
If your using USB audio, there is an internal design flaw NOISE issue independent from any GROUND issues. (at least with my i747m) I can reproduce the machine like noise in the car, on a desk dock, on a separate stereo system. The Ground Loop isolator did not help my issue but it's worth trying if you get the hum/car interference noise from usb and/or headphones.
So I've gone to several concerts with my Samsung Galaxy S3 and I've noticed... Every single video recording with the stock app is absolutely terribad. The video portion is okay (Great for a smartphone) but the audio is absolutely horrendous. I've lately been wanting to find an external microphone that could possibly connect via the 3.5mm jack and serve as the primary mic for picking up sound.
I've scoured the Interwebs for little success on a good external mic that fit my needs. Here are my findings - correct me if I'm wrong in an area:
1. The mic, in order to be recognized by the SGS3 as a mic, needs to have an impedance of over 1000 omegas and has a TRRS 3.5mm jack.
2. There are actually very few compatible mics that would work with the SGS3. One example is the Edutige ESM 01O, which is overpriced and the specs and reviews do not show that it's a good live music recorder.
3. All other vaguely compatible mics are also not good at recording live music, especially bass heavy music (Which is what I frequent). The compatible lavalier mic I found is not what I need.
4. I actually found a mic that is designed for recording live music - the Edutige EIM-004 - BUT it's not compatible with the SGS3, to my dismay. It also costs $80.
So here's my problem - I need a good external microphone that's compatible with my SGS3 that is capable of recording live music with little distortion. Preferably, I'd like a low cost (Ballpark of $20-$50)I've already got the software covered, there are a few apps that I've looked up that fit my needs.
Here's my phone specs:

I'm also interested. :good:
I'm still looking for a solution myself as I also do concerts recording with my S3. The audio recording sounds much better when you aren't as close up to the speakers. I know it would also help if we could block some of the sound coming in. Like ear plugs to block some of the dB.

I've heard of a few apps that reduced the mic's gain and applied a few filters to clean up the sound, but I don't know how much the sound quality improves.
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=390-810
Here's a calibration mic might work.
I like this mic, David. The only problem is the impedance. The mic is 200 ohms but the SGS3 needs a mic of at least 1000 ohms in order for the mic to be recognized as a mic. Otherwise it'll only be recognized as a headset.
For concert recording try the negative mic gain in Boeffla kernel.
I9300XXEMD3, Boeffla 2.12, Earsonics SM3v2
i know this isnt going to help much, but i simply cover the mic's slightly with my hands. when i have my phone in the air recording something, phone horizontal, i place my hands in front of the mic holes, so it only records sound from behind my hands. this helps ALOT.
and what do you know...i'm also an A&B fan. recorded last weekend with the above trick:

Nice! Hope you had a good time at the show haha. I think this is going to be my temporary fix to the problem (Considering how A&B is coming to town tomorrow I've lost all hope of finding a mic in time), but I'll still need a solution for when I go to Ultra... Because their Funktion One systems are definitely too powerful for this fix.

A quick answer for yah Mecronmancer.
- otg usb cable (couple of bucks)
- Digital to Analogue converter with USB (Appr $30) Behringer UCA222 is what I have.
- USB recording app...USB Audio Record or Audio Evolution. Both apps from Same guys.
- Microphone or analogue stereo inputs (Sky is the limit here)
- a rom that supports this arrangement. My i747m S3 with Stock ICS 4.0.4 works flawlessly with this arrangement.
You will get 16bit, 44.1k Stereo recording quality. Will it record while another app is recording Video? That I don't know. Thiis may be your one caveat. I might give it a shot sometime this week and report back.
UPDATE:
I simultaneously recorded USB Audio with the USB audio app and Video+mic audio with the built in ICS video app successfully. So if it was me, I would combine the 2 source recordings using a PC app and have HQ audio with Video. You just need to time align the 2 in sync very easily since you would have lofi mic audio and hifi usb audio sources.

The UCA222 can be powered from your Smart Phone, in my case, the SGS3. I had to buy a female-A-USB-to-Male-micro USB plug. They are inexpensive. I can't remember if this cable had to be an OTA version. (On The Go)
In my car, if my memory serves me well, I had the USB split with one end going to the SGS3 and the other into my USB cigarette lighter charger. I didn't end up using it in my car because it didn't interact well with the phone call audio stream etc. Lots of glitching.
RE-Recording Sound Quality
Unless your a professional audiophile or sound engineer with impeccable trained ears, the recording quality is flawless and blows away what I could do without it. An app like Audio Evolution Mobile is a great combo, especially if you have a larger and fast tablet.
Ok so it doesn't get power from the phone and it has no batteries. Darn. ..I was hoping it could be a handy mobile recorder.
A splitter usb + battery supply is borderline too cumbersome.
Price is great though -- I might tinker with it as a means to dub vinyl to files.
Does anyone make a $30 adc that includes a phono preamp? Lol.

No problem. It's a very small investment for what it can offer.
