Wanting to ask you, what is the drive letter for boot partition to choose?
Wondering if it is C or the USB Drive letter?
CHECK IF THIS IS CORRECT PLEASE:::
Path of your Win file: "I:\Sources\install.wim"
The index number: 1
Drive letter for OS partition: h:
Drive letter for boot partition: c:
USB hard disk or not: YES
The above info correct???

[GUIDE] Install Win8 on VHD/HDD on the fly without DVD or USB

hey
if u want to try windows 8 without messing ur main os and not have to burn dvd or usb drive this is nice guide to help u
steps to install on VHD
0. u will need few apps
EasyBCD
Gimagex
1. first lets create vhd with "Computer Management" @ Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools, right click on disk management and choose create VHD, create 15gb its enuf for testing, after its mounted format it
2. use Gimagex to apply/deploy the image of windows, install.wim, the windows 8 image is in iso u downloaded, at sources dir
3. with easybcd create new virtual disk entry
that's it
steps to install on HDD a bit difficult
Soon
0. we need few apps
EasyBCD [Optional]
Gimagex
and Windows PE/Setup [any version will help windows vista / 7... ]
we need windows PE so we can boot the system to another OS and be able to move few OS dirs
[needed if u have old OS if not skip to step 2]
1.lets boot the system with windows PE / windows setup of any kinda [6.x] and open CMD.exe with
shift + F10
we need to move few dirs like:
Windows, Program files, ProgramData, Users, Program Files (x86)
Example how to move
Move "Program files" c:\windowsOLD\
after we move all the current OS dirs to windowsOLD lets
2.from windows PE\Setup launch cmd.exe with shift + f10 then run gimagex.exe, deploy the image as we did with VHD [ check step 2 in VHD guide]
[needed if didn't have old OS installed before]
3. now we gonna use windows recovery that with windows setup disk or wim
to recovery the OS if u didnt have any OS before
Tips
1.
u dont need to have windows setup on dvd
u can add boot.wim [that include setup boot] to boot menu with easybcd and then boot to it [much faster booting then dvd]
2.
if u like to change back to ur old OS and dont have to format u just have to do this again but now move the dirs of windows 8 to windows8 dir and move back windowsOLD dir to c:\
Problems ?
if u get problem with winload.exe that not digital signature
overwrite bootmgr and bootmgr.efi in c:\ dir with new version of windows 8 setup disk
i do overwrite bootmgr and bootmgr.efi in the windows dir but the same error is there, what is here false?

not in windows dir,

another topic i gonna update the guide to hdd too
I completely understand your guide; howeverm that's probably because I have extensive computer experience. I HIGHLY (and I can't stress this enough) recommend that you rewrite your tutorial; any novice computer user is going to have no idea what you're trying to instruct him/her to do.
Your guide is extremely difficult to read.
It's great that you're sharing your idea with everyone; I'm sure I'm not out of place in saying that everyone around here appreciates it; but I'm sure they would appreciate it a thousand times more if they could follow your guide!
The biggest tip I can give you for guiding someone through anything on a computer is to pretend you're talking to an 80-year-old woman with virtually no experience with computers (such is the literal job of a computer tech).
Again, though, thank you for sharing your idea; it seems like a highly complicated way to avoid a dual-boot, though; however, it is certainly a different method that I had never thought of before, and outside-of-the-box thinking is always welcome here!

[Guide] Dual-Booting Windows 8 and Windows 7

I was searching on this site for a way to dualboot and found nothing. I know many of you are looking for a way to dualboot these two awesome OS(es?). Well look no further. I found a way to successfully dualboot on a website but it's directions are partially inaccurate and incomplete so I decided to write my own method based off of that website. (I will also provide a link to that site at the bottom of this post)
If ^that^ was too much for you too read, here's the condensed version:
I found the method online
I'm simplifying it
So here it is:
Step 1: Download Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant
Click Here: http://web.esd.microsoft.com/W8DL/W...C5B1D8956B5B1D8/Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe
Step 2: Open the downloaded file (if you think I'm going to slow, skip down to Step )
Step 3: Click Run, and if you're not an administrator, type in the admin password, then Click "Yes" when you get a popup saying the Microsoft want access to your hard drive
Step 4: It'll check your "apps"(programs) and devices for compatibility(It might take up to 15 mins. depending on how many "apps" you have. This step doesn't really matter(or apply) to us.
Step 5: Do something/anything
Step 6: Click Next. Select "Nothing"
Step 7: Click Order and fill out your information. Click Checkout.
Step 7.5: Write down your product key on physical paper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Very Important)
Step 8: It'll now say: "We're getting a few things ready"
Step 9: Fill out the details it asks for, then click Next
Step 10: On the next screen choose your payment method
Step 11: Fill out that information, then click Next
Step 12: You'll arrive at the "Confirm your Order" screen. At the bottom click "Buy"
Step 13: Now it will say "Processing your order". Then it will download Windows 8 for you(This might take a while, it depends on your internet connection speed), then make the files it downloaded ready to upgrade your computer.
Step 14: There will now be three options under the title "Install Windows"
Step 15: Select "Install by Creating Media"
Step 16: Now you can either select Usb Flash Drive or ISO file
This is where it branches off
If you select ISO Image, it will ask you where you would like for this to be saved. Then it will prepare the image and be done in maybe 3 mins or so
If you selected USB Flash Drive then I'm sorry I have no idea what to do. If someone could help, I'll include them in the credits
Step 17: (for ISO)
Click the ISO you downloaded and insert a DVD(one of those 4.7 gb ones) into your drive
Step 18: Click Verify Disc to be careful or, if you prefer speed, directly Click "Burn"
Step 19: If you are doing this on a laptop it might sound like your laptop is going to explode, but it's not. I'll take around 15 mins. It'll eject your DVD after it's done
Step 20: Press "Start" button and type "diskmgmt.msc" and click the first option that comes up
Step 21: It might take a while to fully load up. Right click your main(and/or biggest) hard drive and select the fourth option, "Shrink Volume".(It'll take while to load).
If you are on a 32 bit computer enter at least 16384.
If you are using a 64 bit computer type at least 20480. Press "Shrink"
Step 22: Right click the created hard disk and click "New Simple Volume"
Step 23: Click Next, Next, then assign a drive letter then Next, Select "Format this volume with the following settings" then assign a name. For file system select "NTFS", then check "Perform a quick format". Then click next, then Finsh
Step 24: Shutdown your computer (Advanced users can sip down to Step 27)
Step 25: Go into BIOS. I cannot help you with this as every computer is different
Step 26: Once in BIOS, change the boot order. Save and Exit.
Step 27: Shutdown your computer
Step 28: Insert the DVD.
Step 29: You will get a message: "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" Press any key..
Step 30: It will install then you will get to the Personalization Screen (colors, Accounts, etc.)
Step 31: You are done Enjoy!

Reserved for When the Credits List Gets Too Long
You left out the part where you have to partition your disk. Otherwise it will simply overwrite your existing Windows installation.
You wrote you were going to dualboot, right?

Wait, it was that hard to find the steps of
1. Download or pick up a copy of Win8 and put your license key somewhere you can get at it.
2. Reboot your computer from install media.
3. Re-partition your disk.
4. Install to the new partition.
???
Dual-booting Win8 with another OS is no different than it has been with previous OSes. In fact, so long as you stick to NT 6.x versions of Windows, it's pretty trivial. As for re-partitioning, you can do that before rebooting, as you listed, or you can do it from the OS install environment. That option is actually faster, and might allow a greater amount of shrink, because there's no concern over whether file handles are in use. You'll need to select the Advanced options, though.
As for creating a bootable flashdrive, there's a tool somewhere to do it for you but the steps are actually quite simple.
1. Make sure it's formatted FAT32. Reformat it if needed.
2. You'll need to mark the Flashdrive's partition as bootable.
2.1. Open CMD as admin.
2.2 Run diskpart.
2.3 List Disk to find he disk number of your flashdrive.
2.4 Select Disk # (where # is the number you found in 2.3).
2.4 List Part to find the partitions on the flashdrive (there's usually only one).
2.5 Select Part # (where again, # is the partition number from 2.4).
2.6 Active (this command marks the selected partition as "active" meaning bootable).
2.7 Exit.
3. Copy the install files onto the flashdrive.
3.1. If you downloaded the install media as an ISO, you'kl need to get the files off of it. You can do this by mounting the ISO, by opening ISO in a program like 7-Zip (my preferred option), or by burning it to a DVD.
3.2 Once you have the files, just copy them from the root of the install "disk" (whether a physical DVD, mounted ISO image, or image you are exploring in 7-Zip) to the root of the flashdrive.
4. You now have a bootable flashdrive ready to install Windows from. You can use it on any computer that can boot from USB.
A few more tips:
* If you have Bitlocker enabled on your current OS, suspend or disable it before running the second install! Otherwise, you'll have to enter that horribly long Recovery Key value. The best way is to suspend BL, which is nearly instant to do or undo, and very easy:
** CMD (or Powershell) as Admin -> manage-bde.exe -protectors -disable C:
* If you have a Linux dual-boot already, and have configured GRUB to chain-load the Windows loader (which is the usual approach), you will need to re-install GRUB after installing Win8 because Win8 will overwrite the GRUB stage one loader in the MBR. If you instead have the Windows loader set up to chain-load GRUB, you're fine; installing win8 will add a new entry to your BCD (bootloader menu) but won't interfere with the existing one for loading GRUB.

Probably, yes. It could just as easily be done with a script that invokes Diskpart and 7-Zip, though.

disk wiped clean - won't allow me to recover

Hi, I installed Windows 8.1 Preview on my ARM tablet. before installing it I created a recovery USB drive as I thought I would hate Windows 8.1 and want to go back to 8.0.
So I did but before recovering I had the stupidest idea to wipe clean the disk.
there were 3 partitions in it before:
• recovery (around 300mb)
• EFI (I don't remember its size)
• C: (around 54, 55GB).
I can still get access to the blue screen with the big buttons. in Troubleshoot, "Reset your PC" won't work. it gives me a message saying "Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing"
I still have access to command line and could recreate the partitions but I don't know what would be the correct sizes and file systems for EFI and Recovery. and even if I did I have a feeling that just creating the partitions might not make much difference.
Any ideas, please?

You cant restore from your USB? In troubleshoot, "reset your PC" tries to reset it from the internal recovery partition, not an external one. There would be a different option for that.

no, buddy... that's what I assumed it would happen before wiping the disk.
once I'm in I get the blue screen where I pick the keyboard layout then the second screen has two buttons "Troubleshoot" and "Turn off your PC". In "Troubleshoot" I have "Refresh your PC", "Reset your PC" and "Advanced Options". In "Advanced Options" I have "Automatic Repair" and "Command Prompt".
none of these options do anything even though I can see the recovery drive is being accessed.
If you have a full (~3 GB) recovery image on USB, boot your system from USB and it should be able to restore.
With the USB stick plugged in and the Surface off, hold the "volume down" button and press and release the power-on button. Hold down "volume down" until you see the Surface logo. It will take a while, since it's loading from USB. Once you get to *that* menu, do a reset. When it asks, make sure that you choose to repartition your drives. Don't do the full wipe option--that'll take forever. Just use the "delete my files" or whatever button.
You can know that it's the 8.0 recovery image rather than 8.1 because it will ask for your language before asking for your keyboard layout. (This is because RT 8.1 preview was only released in English. It'll likely change for final.)

the disk has been wiped clean. I have created the partitions manually. it didn't make any difference.
Try this CMD script. Thanks go to a person in the original "windows RT unlocking" thread, he've uploaded his recovery taken from a developer-unlocked device. Unfortunately I don't remember his nick
Code:
rem These commands are used with DiskPart to
rem erase the drive and create five partitions
rem for a UEFI/GPT-based computer.
rem Adjust the partition sizes to fill the drive as necessary.
convert gpt
rem === 1. Windows RE tools partition ===========
create partition primary size=350
format quick fs=ntfs label="WinRE"
set id="de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac"
assign letter="T"
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
rem === 2. System partition =====================
create partition efi size=200
rem *** NOTE: For 4KB-per-sector drives, change this value to 260
format quick fs=fat32 label="System"
assign letter="S"
rem === 3. Microsoft Reserved (MSR) partition ===
create partition msr size=128
rem === 4. Windows partition ====================
rem == a. Create Windows partition ===========
create partition primary
rem == b. Create space for recovery image ====
shrink minimum=3600
rem == c. Prepare the Windows partition ======
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"
assign letter="W"
rem === 5. Recovery image partition =============
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Recovery Image"
set id="de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac"
assign letter="R"
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
exit
You should create a CMD file (say, "CreatePartitions-UEFI.cmd"), put it into the root dir of your recovery USB and boot into the command-line mode. Then run it from CMD.
Of cause you can modify the script as you like - for example as you already have the pratitions created, you may need only to use "gpt attributes" commands.
And don't forget that the boot partition (the EFI partition that contains bootmgr.efi file) should be FAT32, not NTFS.
After the script finished - disk W: would be your Windows partition. You should try to extract the recovery WIM file there:
Code:
Dism /apply-image /imagefile:U:\sources\Install.Wim /index:1 /ApplyDir:W:\
U: here is a drive letter of your recovery USB. I think that it should be D: or E:. You can determine it with the "list vol" command in diskpart.
S: is your EFI partition. You may need to copy the \EFI subdirectory from your recovery USB to S:\EFI dir and then use BCDEDIT tool to recreate boot entries. read technet or more info, for example here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh265131(v=ws.10).aspx
P.S. I have not tried this script myself - but it looks like being correct. For more info look here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825686.aspx and here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825221.aspx

Although not completely related to this thread...
I have trouble with restoring from USB on 8.1, though 8.0 works fine. When restored from USB instead of upgraded from 8.0, the OS goes into a mode where the desktop is always black and won't let you change it. This is due to Windows not having a valid product key.
I did some registry trickery to retrieve my 8.0 product key. =) Basically, I copied the Windows NT\CurrentVersion to my Windows 8 PC as a different name, then hacked an existing product key retrieval program to use that name. It seemed to work; it gave a key that my RT accepts.

I would just wipe clean the hard drive with diskpart.
the steps our friend posted worked for me but I ignored the parts it refers to a Windows RE Tools partition. also I used 4000 instead of 3600 for the Recovery Partition.
after the
Code:
Dism /apply-image /imagefile:U:\sources\Install.Wim /index:1 /ApplyDir:W:\
step (which is lengthy as it rebuilds the entire windows partition) copy the boot files to the EFI partition from the newly rebuilt Windows partition with
Code:
bcdboot W:\Windows
and finally set the location of the Windows partition with
Code:
W:\Windows\System32\reagentc /setosimage /path R: /target W:\Windows /index 1
and you're done. don't bother with drive letters and visible drives as they'll sort themselves out when Windows launches for the first time.
I am having the same exact issue after formatting my Samsung XE700T and then trying to restore my laptop with a recovery usb
Can someone please give me a hand with this process, I have tried the script but it isn't working, so I am wondering what I am doing wrong.
A more simple explanation for someone who isn't use to using CMD would be great
Thank you

i think i have to format that parition again, and copy the driver back into.but i don't know the steps.can you help me? I have the usb driver itself already (search and download from the internet) but i want to fix this problem right.
i have some knowledge about root, flash rom, using sdk, using adb command to install apk, flash recovery....
the partition as mention in this post from XDA ( forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2800243) something like this : /block/mmcblk0p24
1. which command i use to mount this partition
2. after that which command to format it,set permission,etc,... as Windows can read, so here FAT32
3.copy the driver back to the fresh formatted partition.

2. after that which command to format it,set permission,etc,... as Windows can read, so here FAT32
3.copy the driver back to the fresh formatted partition.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you! Thank you

[tutorial]How to change bootlogo

Hi, I want to show you the way to change bootlogo on your Lumia.
On Lumia we has two logo.
First logo appear after boot(it's Nokia or Microsoft).
Second logo appears when windows loading . (it's blue tiles)
ok, what need to change logo?
1) unlock phone using WPInternals
2) ext2fsd (just google it)
3) Image (you can draw it yourself)
lets go:
first load your phone in masstorage mode (see WPI)
then open ext2mgr (see ext2fsd install folder), and find FAT partition with size 8160K, then assing letter for it (RMB> "assign drive letter").
(if you find the right partition is name will be PLAT)
In root of assigned drive you find files "logo1.png" and "logo2.bmp", you can just replace it with your files, but this files must be the same resolution as originals.
then unmount drive in ext2mgr (RMB> "change drive letter"> "remove") and reboot phone.
PS. if you have trubles with finding partition...
1) partition has type FAT
2) partition has size ~ 8M
3) partition has name PLAT
this tips help you to find PLAT partition))

No need to use Extfsd.mount partion via disk management in pc.
Is it possible to skip either of the logos to speed up boot time?
