I tried out a rom and really didnt like it. I made a nandroid backup before hand so would I just go into recovery and restore or do I need to wipe anything first like delvic cache or factory data wipe?
wipe dalvik cache the other cache and wipe data factory reset. then restore. or you could flash calkulins format all.
Well I actually already did it and I just did the restore without wiping anything. Everything seems to work fine I will wipe cache and delvic but do you think I could get away without the factory restore?
A Nandroid restore completely overwrites everything with the backed up files. No need to wipe anything it is done automatically.
Awesome, thank you very much!

So I have a quick question for everyone here.
Is there anything else I need to do to clear all remnants of an existing ROM from my phone other than factory reset/wipe data and wipe cache before installing another ROM?
I seem to have residual bugs from a previous ROM on my current ROM. Maybe it's kernel related? I don't know. Any advice?
Edit: Gah. Sorry wrong forum. Please move.
Try wiping dalvik cache from recovery. Its in the advanced tab i believe.

What i usually do is go into the partitions menu and format data / system / cache, and then i go into advanced and format dalvik cache, and then i go to the main screen and do format data factory reset and then format cache... i do all those twice so its 100% gone absolutely nothing lingering around

Awesome. Thanks guys. I'll give that a whirl.
I have been checking the box in ROM Manager to clean cache and wipe when flashing new Roms
and then ... ?
After all this is done, and the new ROM flashed, what can one restore from Titianium Backup without restoring incompatible/bad stuff? Thanks

Don't restore system data, especially if you're going from a 2.1 rom to a 2.2 rom.
I always just restore user apps and data.
on doing a recover from back up do you need to wipe data and all?
Nope. Maybe wipe cache and stuff to be sure. But if you're restoring a backup wiping everything out wouldn't matter anyways

Typically you just need to wipe your data cache [not factory reset] and dalvik cache. If you experience boot looping or prolonged splash screen, do a battery pull and wiper everything [including factory reset], the re-flash your rom.
I went through a few guides about restoring from NANDROID backup, but all of them didn't mention about Wipe Data/Factory Reset or Wipe Cache etc. So I'm curious and don't know what to do now. Do I need to wipe?
Yes.

This? In the steps there's no wiping. So if you confirm to me here I need to wipe, I'll listen. So the answer is yes or no? And if yes, do I need to wipe cache?
Read the guide in post#7.
Yes to wipe.

It's always recommended to wipe to get a clean environment, especially if you want to restore to another ROM than the one you are currently on, you should wipe then Restore NAND.
Wiping is recommended, but often times I don't (just don't come screaming if things happen )
When you restore a ROM, all your existing system information is overwritten, so it shouldn't be an issue. Sometimes if the ROM you're restoring from doesn't contain a certain partition (like dalvik cache), but the ROM you're on right now and changing from does, you can get issues, since there's no dalvik cache to replace.
That's how I understand it at least.
This is what I do when I install a new ROM
I Use 4EXT Recovery Touch
Step 1:- backup | restore --> Backup
Step 2:- wipe | format --> wipe data/factory reset --> wipe cache --> wipe dalvik
Step 3:- install from sdcard --> choose zip from sdcard
Step 4:- full wipe
That's it.....

I stand corrected. It seems one doesn't have to manually wipe when restoring a backup. At least in 4ext it is done automatically. I'll be taking a look at it later and edit this post if I'm wrong. Just in case

when you wipe the system or do a full wipe does that remove the TWRP recovery mode. I wiped to go to a new ROM before but I could not get back into TWRP recovery menu and had to re-install it all over again. IS this the case every time you wipe the system?
No, wiping system only wipe the ROM. I did run into the same problem once with an older version of TWRP. Haven't had any problems with TWRP 2.6.3.1 yet(knocking on wood)

Short answer, no. It is highly abnormal for the recovery image to be wiped/corrupted from a reset/wipe. But then again, twrp has seen its fairshares of hiccups. Maybe it was just a fluke, luck of the draw.

thanks for the help
Thanks I thought I was doing something wrong. I had to start all over and since then I have never done a complete wipe only Davlik and Cache

Whenever I flash roms or restore nandroid backups, I always do a factory/data reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. Then I proceed to flash. Never had any problems. Sorry that you had to redo everything :-{

Hi guys. I'm using the 2.6 version of TWRP. It seems whenever I restore a backup things always seem to go wrong and the OS reboots the first 24-48 hours before things are eventually stable. Do I need to factory reset and wipe system, cache and dalvik cache before I restore a backup, or should restore simply take care of everything for me already when I'm switching from one ROM to another?
mhajii210
One of the reasons I don't backup.
But, yeah I suppose you would want to clear data and cache before you flashed a backup.

You should always wipe cache, data, system, dalvik cache and do a factory
reset before restoring a nandroid backup or flashing a new or different rom.
Doing a factory reset before restoring a nandroid backup will not make
you loose anything at all because the nandroid backup contains all your
settings, apps, mms, contacts and anything else you had in your rom
prior to making the nandroid backup.
It would also be best if you went to the play store and download the free app
"Goomanager" and use that to make sure you have the latest version of TWRP
for your phone.
Good luck!
