htc desire g7 seems to be a cheap Chinese clone of the standard desire... why that's supported and not standard desires is beyond me? :S

All HTC android devices have a g number. The HTC desire is the G7. It is NOT a Chinese clone. However Chinese clones tend to use the "g7" badge for identification. G7 is official.

You dont need to change Hboot, that rom will work perfectly well on the stock Hboot. but if you are wanting more spaces for apps, I recommend cm7r2.
As always before any changes, remember to do a complete nadroid backup before flashing hboot. and you can always switch back to stock. Bear in mind that once you have flashed your new Hboot your current nandroid backup may not work on cm7r2 depending on what ROM it is.

It would be best to nandroid backup current rom, flash New rom. Nandroid backup new rom, flash new hboot. Then if needs be, nandroid restore new rom.

I installed CM& RC4 last night on my brothers Desire. I then flashed the bravo_alphaspl-cm7.img from alpharev to give him more space for his apps.
Now just for the future i need to know, if i want to install a different type of ROM (stock, leedroid etc), will i need to flash another HBOOT to his phone? If so, does this be done before or after installing a new ROM?
Just wanting to future proof myself here in case he asks for sense back or something.
Yes, the CM7 HBOOT partition table is designed for the CyanogenMod usage. The stock ROMs and LeeDroid need another partition table and consequently another HBOOT.

That means the ROM is designed to run with the CM7 hboot - the hboot is a separate thing you may want to flash.
Note that you don't have to do this - ROMs will work fine with the stock hboot, but the custom one will give you more space for apps in the /data partition.
Some roms works only with custom Hboot like CM7 Hboot or Oxygen Hboot, if the rom doesn't need CM7 Hboot stay with stock Hboot

Fr_78: not quite. As stated above you if you are running stock hboot you will be able to use cm7 roms as well.
The difference is in the partition layout, and as the cm7 hboot has a smaller system partition you won't be able to run a sense rom with it. However you will be able to do it the other way around(cm7 rom on std hboot), as there will just be loads of free(and unusable) space on the system partition.
Have been wondering this myself... I am using baadnewz's GS 2.1 ROMs lately in A2SD+... I have been wanting to switch to the CM7 version due it being apparently faster and lighter on internal memory. Have not got around to flashing CM7 HBoot yet, but if I run on stock HBoot, will I still see the advantages in speed and memory??
PS, I am not S-Off yet, either...that was to be part of the CM7 HBoot procedure...
If it's space you want for apps, try using StarBurst or SuperNova ROM, which both use Data2SD. LeeDroid, MIUI also support Data2SD (but you'll need to flash the A2SD killer first, then install Data2SD afterwards). No need to flash custom HBoot, IMO.
It's the one from Robocik rcmix1.0 but with cm i have memory problems but they say its faster...dunno what to do..

The rom sits in the /system partition, and all of that partition is ringfenced according to your partition table, so it can't be used for other things. So even if the rom is smaller, unless you change the hboot, you don't get more free internal memory (/data partition).

In fact you may have 2. Just download the appropriate pb99img.zip and put them in SD , with the roms you want to use (one for each partition table). So each time you want to change, just rename it and boot into hboot, then flash the other ROM and voila!

I don't think that I am ever going to try... See there is not much space on my SD to have two .zip of full roms ready to be installed, 2 different pb99img.zip and 2 full nandroid backups. Not to talk about titanium backups and my explorer
It is just too much complicated to do all that , just to say that you "dual boot" two different hboot roms...

Agreed, technically possible but not practical!
I made a nandroid backup of a Rom before I upgraded my hboot to alpharev r2.
Is it ok to go back to this old Rom with the new hboot? I'm suspecting it is considering they tell you to backup before doing it, just not entirely sure??

Yes it is, hboot just changes the partition table, as long ad the rom you want to use fits with the hboot you flashed it's all good!

Well I heard that on Oxygen rom, they were having difficulty "shrinking" the size of the system files, that's why there is a new bootloader. You can prob say that for CM7 as well. As software develops, it gets bigger as any piece of software, so you have to upgrade the space available at some point.

You would have to backup. If you bothered to look you would notice that the /system partition has grown by 15MB and the /data partition has shrunk by 15MB. So I would backup if I was you cause most likely if will mess up.
I see that the Cache is now 5megs... will that effect things like Market when it tries downloading a 30meg APK file?

You have to activate a2sd+ to download things from market. Or maybe there exits a "market download fix" for the rom you use. If you want to radio, you cannot do it with recovery, you have to do it over fastboot.
Quick question,
If I make a nandroid backup on a stock hboot base, and then change stock hboot to cmr7 hboot. Is it possible that my backup still works when I put it back on a cmr7 base.

Depends on the Rom you had in your nandroid backup. If it's Oxygen, CM7 or any AOSP roms then it will most likely fit. If it's a Sense ROM then it's possible you'll have issues.

Not possible but certain. Part of the /system won't be restored and no chance rom will boot. I don't have such issues as my sense rom has very small footprint

Hello.
My girlfriend got my old Desire and I flashed Oxygen and Oxygen hboot on it some time ago. Now I want her to have Cyanogenmod (because of some errors with Oxygen). I know I can't just flash Cyanogenmod without deleting a few apps from the zip file, if I want it to work with the Oxygen hboot.
I deleted unnecessary apps so the file is about 66MB in size. I deleted the data/factory reset and wiped the cache (as told in the tutorial), I flashed and it gets stuck at the HTC bootscreen.
How do I flash it WITH the Oxygen Hboot?
Best you open the zip in 7zip or something. Then check whether the expanded size of the sytem folder is less than the oxygen 100 MB. For Ex Oxygen 2.3.2 system folder is 61.5MB which when expanded fills around 96MB.

It its. About 10 MB to big. I don't know what to remove. I really don't need LatinIME (keyboard) and the launcher, but I need it to start. I just need to install titanium backup.
EDIT: i also tried flashing cyanogenmod without factory reset and just wiping cache and Delvik cache. It worked, but I couldn't ass a google accout, even though I flash google apps too.
Is it so hard to flash different hboot?
I think that you can survive without that 20-30MB...

if u dont want, or know how to use fastboot just download the PB99IMG version of the hboot, rename it to just PB99IMG.zip, put it on ur sdcard and boot into bootloader (volume down +power) then ur bootloader will find PB99IMG and ask to update bootloader? volume up for yes then it will ask to reboot? volume down for no. then just enter recovery, full wipe and install the rom. simple

This is one and the easiest way how you can do it, but I prefer flashing via fastboot. I also recommend format of all partitions before flashing. Trust me it's less problem than stripping of rom.

yh my bad, should of said said format all partitions except sdcard after changing hboots. its just i do that anyway when i do a full wipe, others probably dont.

Of course, but I do that even before flashing, cause a few times I got problems with recovery not working so I had to flash it also.
Installed the hboot and flashed Cyanogenmod. Works so far.
Of course it works. If you like CM7 you can check out my Sony Xperia themed rom, maybe you'll like it more...

I wasn't trying to be rude. The desire is my girlfriend and now I finally got the cyanogenmod on it. But I would like to try it on my own Galaxy 2
I think you have both cm7 and cm9 versions on Cyanogenmod site.
I personaly have a Desire so I made a few roms for it, so if I ever have a G II (which I doubt cause I'm not a big fan of Samsung, actually I hate it )...
The rom I suggested you I made based on cm 7.2.0.1, the latest stable version, but it is modded a little bit.
