So yesterday I noticed my battery drain like crazy for some reason, then I looked at my stats and it showed my screen on time was 33min and my awake time was 4hours.
So I opened up the betterbatterystats app and found that Google maps was wakelocking and draining the battery.
I just wanted to see if any other users have got this problem. I had to disable maps and all GPS services to stop it.
It seems to only effect 6.0.0 and above maps.

You can disable the Maps Application, if you don't use it of course. As a side note, I have the gummynex rom 0.7.0 and every time i boot the phone the maps application is open on the recent applications button. Of course it has a black screenshot as it has not been used.
Yeh I disabled it.

How do you find out which app is causing a WAKE LOCK?
same question. If someone knows, please enlighten us.
Thanks
There are a few apps that are available in the market to single it down if it's not obvious like facebook
Better battery stats is one off my head, you can single it down by seeing what's using battery usually by going to settings > battery and seeing what's at the top... If it's not display then you've got a wake lock usually.
.. unless you're doing standby battery tests

The best way to check if you even have any wakelocks is to check the battery graph under settings and see if your phone's awake time is greater than it's screen time (I attached an example of my phone's graph while asleep a few nights ago)
If it's like mine you obviously have some wake locks...and to find out what services are waking up your phone, already recommended Better Battery Stats shows you what woke your phone via partial and kernel wakelocks...partial wake locks are what you're really looking for since kernel wake locks are obviously at the kernel level and if you're using a halfway decent one it shouldn't really be a problem
From here you just need to track down what services are initiating the partial wake locks (the service name is listed) and either turn it off or uninstall the associated app
EDIT: The Galaxy Nexus (for me at least) has been causing issues with wakelocks at least on 4.0.3 (see my stats attachment) but it's looking like a core OS thing and since 4.0.3 hasn't even been pushed out OTA yet it would make sense that they're ironing a few things out. Though I still am trying to troubleshoot what the services are specifically

In my quest to see why my battery drains so much during idle (3-4%/hour), using GSam Battery Monitor, I find Maps wakes the phone constantly.
I have 'location reporting' from within maps turned off, and location history turned off, latitude location sharing is turned off also.
I do have Google's Location Service turned on so I can use Google Now, and also have GPS satellites and Location & Google Search checked. But I don't see why Location Service would make Maps wake my phone so often (pretty much 1x every minute)
Is this normal? Or is something not right?
P.S. Yes, I know it "only" drained 2% since I unplugged it 1.2 hours ago but it's the first time this has ever happened and as soon as I took the snapshots, it dropped to 97% right away.
I have lots of wakes from Maps too. Likely because you're using Google Location Services and are using Google Now, which needs to know your location.
It is normal. when you check it off try to find it in your running processes, you won't find it.
It stopped doing that to me when I turned off location tracking in Latitude settings in Google Maps.

Yes this is the answer
Go in Maps ->Settings->Position settings and disable background update position

This is my map - settings - location settings screenshot. everything is disabled already.
Eddie1506: where do I change settings in Latitude?
Automaddux: you mean I have to turn off Google Location Service (and in effect Google Now)?
Thanks everyone!
Your not the only one buddy... I just witnessed this right now. Went to sleep to a pretty good charged battery and wake up to about a 35% battery ..

I always have. Even on my E4GT..and have had no problems with deep sleep. But now the phone won't sleep at all.

I leave GPS off unless I need it. That stopped the wake locks for me.
I was referring to those settings on your screenshot. When I turned off everything there, it stopped waking up the device.
But, those settings work for me since I don't use Latitude and Google Now is not usable here in Croatia anyhow.
Sorry
I've had 310 in three hours. Frustrating.

so it's google location services that causes the extreme amount of wakes. so I have to make a decision, whether to enable Location Services and Google Now or live without it. In the end, it seems like the battery life doesn't suffer that much, so I think I'll keep it on...
I keep my Google now turned off because I'm all about battery life. But other people may have different thoughts

I just got my first Android phone and its a Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean. The first two days I was getting around 4-5 hours of battery life and then started reading up on this forum and did a bunch of suggested changes like turning off NFC, location services etc. Also, downloaded Juice Defender and now the battery life is around 7 hours. My usage is very minimal and I was thinking the battery life should be much better than this. When I look into my usage, it seems Google Maps is eating out all my battery life. I have turned off all possible location services to stop this but nothing seems to work.
I have attached some of the relevant screenshots also from my device.
Any advice on how to get this sorted is much appreciated. Thank you.
Isn't there a location setting within the maps app that you should turn off? Or have you already done so?
Go into maps and look in settings if you are logged into "latitude". If so, then log out of it.

Why don't you just kill maps when you don't use it???

I do kill the map. In fact, I make sure to kill all apps after I am done using them but somehow it still pops up. I have a doubt that there might be some other app that is keeping my maps awake but I am unable to detect any.

What you can do is root the phone and then install Titanium Backup and freeze maps. Then it will never be able to start again.
I don't usually use maps but I've been noticing that the maps app use more than 5% of the battery everyday... It uses as much battery as the browser, which I use quite often..
What's going on? I have only used the maps apps twice to test it. My GPS is off and so is network location.
My phone is stock rooted.
Help?

It's the newer location tracking from Google now. Go into your options on maps or Google now and check there. I don't have N2 yet, so don't know what the options look like, but it should have options for location services and the like.

Maps will always run in memory and will drain battery. You can check that from better battery stats as well. It keps the phone awake. Better to freeze the maps

I understand that but 5% of battery usage? With my S2, maps didn't even show up in the battery stats.

You have to install betterbatterystats, it will let you know why maps have used the battery. If maps are showing up in the alarms for no reason, you need to throw it away
I hope you're not logged in Latitude.
Recently the GPS crosshairs icon flashes on my status bar like every 5 seconds then flips off...on and off, on and off all day. I know the simple fix would to be just to turn off gps, but again this just started happening recently. I always left my gps on all the time and the crosshairs icon would only flash when an app was using it, like in google maps or navigation. So I'm assuming it's an app that's using my gps in the background somewhere. How can I figure out what is using it?
Also, I've always kept my screen on the brightest setting with no problem regarding battery life. But I just looked in Settings>Battery and it shows that the screen is responsible for 80% of the battery, with no mention of gps. So, any ideas about what's going on with my battery?
Better battery stats will help you find what's causing the issue. Its a paid app on the play store, look for the picture of a battery and plus sign.

You can find BBB here for free for XDA users.
My suggestion is to look at your apps and see what has Location or GPS permissions (ie. Facebook/G+/4Square, Maps, old Latitude-type settings, anything the "checks you in",...).
It is an app that is broadcasting your position and initiating your GPS to trigger. Find the app and fix the problem.
