If you are having problems with Odin, there are dozens of threads on that. First off is get a better cable. Then follow the directions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813

FWIW I've had problems with two phones and two different cables rooting EL30 with Odin and CWM5.
Here's what finally worked for me:
Odin the ACS recovery or CWM3 tar.md5 files. Most of the time when it reboots automatically, it will reboot into the recovery (with cable still attached). If it doesn't reboot into recovery, pull the cable and battery and use Odin again to reflash ACS or CWM3 until it does reboot into recovery.
Use the recovery to flash a CWM5 zip.
I can get Odin to install a CWM5 tar but it never "sticks". It always stays with the stock recovery. The only way I can get CWM5 to stick is to flash a CWM5 zip.

That's cuz on gingerbread you need to flash another kernel prior to flashing the recovery and don't have auto reboot checked after flashing the recovery just go straight into it

Thanks. I seem to recall that when I didn't have auto reboot checked it just sat there in download mode, but maybe my memory is playing tricks on me. As I get older my memory isn't what it used to be. Also, as I get older, my memory isn't what it used to be.

CWM mod odin only tar?
I tried the odin method described in bubbys thread to install cwm mod via odin but when i connected my e4gt it showed in odin and clicked pda to open tar file but odin didnt see the tar file to open yet it is in the file on my desktop and pda sees the kernel rar files?? Real strange because this was a fresh download from bubbys link. For some odd reason i cant open the tar file to add in odin and install to the phone to have cwm. My phone has bubbys stock kernel after i had used zedo's v2 then v3. I was having the LOS issues after both zedo kernels then it went away after returning to bubbys stock odin install that has kept SU. So at this point i don't know whether to scratch my watch or wind my a**

please help - clockworkmod backup rom problem

ok so, i just rooted my phone and that went fine. did it with the stock rom, but after I did that I installed clockwork mod. well, i tried to do a back up of the current rom and when it rebooted it crashed. now it comes up to the android system recovery screen but it won't let me select anything...... can anyone help?!?!?
i am freaking out here... did i brick my phone?!?!?! anyone????
I don't know why you're having a problem or what caused it but you certainly didn't brick your phone. You can always flash a new ROM in clockwork or use odin to flash the stock .tar.
edit: missed the part about not being able to select anything in recovery. All is not lost, just flash the stock EG31 .tar with odin and you'll be fine. You're gonna have to reroot and set everything back up again (I've done it twice today) but at least you will still have a phone. Try just flashing the kernel first, maybe you can get it to boot without losing anything.
everytime i reboot the phone it just comes back to this android system recovery screen. it's blule, at the bottom is says manual mode. and something sucsessfull but, it won't let me selelect any of the options and it keeps booting to this screen... where can i download odin? i keep seeing stuff about that, i guess i need to flash to a rom or something....
edit: cool, yeah.. can you show me where to download what your talking about??
thank you!!

Basic Odin questions

Hi,
I have been rooting for a while with my evo 4g which is basically just recoveries & zip files.
Currently I have updated to Calk's ICS Beta 3 rom with modem FC05. I have read some stuff here & there that talk about having issues going from a ICS rom back to a GB nandroid.
I have installed Kies opened Odin, looked at the Wiki here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
I just dont quite get in terms of flashing zips through odin. I keep reading people say to odin back to stock & then flash from there.
How do I do that? I looked at QB777's video on youtube, but it seems like PIT files arent used much at this point.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Rich
Ok, basically when you Odin back to stock, it involves flashing a .tar ROM from the pda slot in desktop Odin and not zip file like you would in CWM. Once you restore back to stock, you can find a .tar recovery, I personally use rogue which will allow you to have cwm-based recovery for flashing zips. All the links should be in development. Let me know if you still need help
Edit-what Odin does is it allows you to flash Roms, kernels, moderns, etc even if you don't have a custom recovery, provided that they are in the correct format, like .tar extension

so when i flash a tar, I go into download mode, open odin, point it to a stock rooted tar file that has CWR & I am back to stock ready to flash to something else?
Can you help me find those files? A stock rooted, CWR should do the trick.

Ok, so you go into a download mode on your phone, open Odin, plug in your USB cord, ODIN should recognize your phone provided you installed the right drivers. You're good if you get the yellow box that says 0 com, something something. The only box that should be checked is Auto Reboot in Odin.
The easiest way that I've been going back and forth between GB and ICS is to install the rooted EL29 .tar version here
http://little-melon.com/sfhub/SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-sfx.exe
You would need to extract the file until you get a folder with tar.md5 name. Example of the file I provided would be SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_PDA.tar.md5 once you unzip it. This is the file you would put on the PDA slot of your desktop Odin.
Once you do this, Odin will start flashing and be done in like 1-2 minutes and auto reboot. Do not do anything to shut down, unplug, or mess with the device while Odin is flashing or you may end up bricking it. Once your phone reboots you will be rooted and stock based with EL 29 modem and kernel, which is the latest official Sprint OTA. If you want to get a recovery after this, you would need to go back into Odin and flash a kernel that has a recovery baked in. Like I said I use Rogue and the link would be here for Rogue Stock EL29-
http://goo-inside.me/kernels/TeamRo.../rogue_ET-recoveryonly-1.1.4-rc0-odin.tar.md5
Flashing this in Odin you will get CWM-based recovery and can start backing up, flashing different ROMS.
Hope this helps.

Just to confirm, using the files you had here, I open odin in download mode, choose PDA (check the check box) point it to the tar.md5 file, hit start & wait a few minutes until it auto reboots?
How do I flash the recovery? Is it also the PDA?
I have been flashing modems in CWR, not odin & I just want to make sure that recovery or rom itself, just PDA & nothing else checked (but PDA)?

Reverting back to GB ROM
I recently switched back from ICS to GB and did not have any problems with the change back. I simply went into my SD card manually took everything off except my chaulkins format all and my wifi tether hack. I then went into recovery mode and did a wipe all. Then went to zip files, ran the format all, then did an install of the new ROM and it works great!

Phone keeps booting into Recovery Mode

I accidentally flashed the kernel for my old SGS II International to my Epic 4G Touch, but I managed to get it back to stock eventually. Everything was fine for the past couple months, and today I finally decided to install the system update(which I just put off for awhile despite all the prompts). Then it gave me that white triangle and when I rebooted into recovery mode. Now it just stays in recovery mode no matter what I do. Reboot option? Reboots back into recovery? Factory reset option? Boots back into recovery.
The ok button should be the power button right? This is a bit different from my old SGS
i would try pulling the battery and attempting to boot into download
yea, try & get into download mode... power off>vol dn+power until download mode is on the screen. then use ODIN/HEIMDALL to flash a stock tar file.
I should have mentioned that I did remove the battery and leave it out for a few minutes several times. It just kept booting back into recovery. I did eventually find the jig I made which was able to force it into download mode. But heimdall just keeps giving me this "ERROR: Claiming interface failed!" message even though it can detect the phone.
So no one has any idea what to do about this?
Did you try odin? If that fails put a rom(.zip) in sd card and flash from revovery.
Edit: if you are goin to switch from heimdall to odin you have to unistall heimdalls drivers. There are instructions on how to do this in heimdalls readme file.

No, I didn't try Odin because I'm using OS X. I guess I'm going to have to make a windows boot partition. sigh
Well I guess I'll try to flash a rom from recovery first.
Well this is odd. It won't let me write anything to the sd card I normally use in it. It says it's read only. But uh....it always copied things fine if it was IN either this phone or my SGS II International when I tried to copy things.
I should just be able to put the rom on any micro SD card right? I have another 4 GB laying around here I can use if so.
Correct any sd should work!

You may have to go the route of installing Odin and flashing a full stock tar that includes ROM, kernel, and modem so it overwrites everything in that one flash. I don't think it is something you can do by flashing in a recovery

You have the stock recovery. That why. U can't flash an unsigned from from there. You are gonna have to Odin something. Either a full tar or maybe a kernel with cwm to flash something.

Well anyone want to recommend/link me a tar? I'm making a windows partition right now so I can run Odin.
And yeah I figured it was because I put it back to stock that it wasn't working. But if it's back on stock why am I still getting the white triangle with the orange exclamation?
In fact if it's back to stock the past couple months and been working fine then why did it decide to screw up when I tried to install the OS update?

Tried to install CWM via app, now no ODIN

Hello,
I had my phone rooted and on the last stock ICS ROM. I wanted to install CWM so I downloaded the app from the Play store and hit the install recovery button. I chose the Epic 4g as it was the closest device to mine. Now when I go into recovery I get a strange looking recover multi CSC version? Very few choices and whenever I try to flash a zip they always fail authentication. PC Odin does not recognize the phone. What can I do to either get ODIN back or the real CWM? Thanks.

Only 2 ways to flash a modem are CWM and PC Odin.
If you're already on FK09 try flashing the Rooted nodata version and see if that gets you back where you need to be.
You'll lose CWM but that may not be for too long.
You can always flash one of Agat's CWM repacks for ICS, backup/restore and then flash back the stock FK09 kernel via Odin for now.

ICS 4.0.4 (FI27?) the stock rooted OTA. I had root so I ended up using Mobile ODIN to flash the KJ09 tar file but it didn't bring the modem so I have no 3g.

I appreciate everyone's attempts at helping me so I will lay out where my phone is at this momen:
ODIN recovery no longer exists on my phone. When I hold down vol down+power the phone boots up normally - NO ODIN
The recovery that does come up is the Android Standard Recovery 3e which has signature validation turned on - this makes all of the files fail since they are not properly signed.
I am trying to find a way to downgrade the Standard recovery to 2e (no signature verification) or see if signature verification can be turned off in 3e.
I am hoping that getting any of the official Sprint update files might help as those should be signed.
Thanks in advance to all.

1) Any luck with a USB jig?
2) Any luck trying 'reboot download' from ADB and seeing if that will get you to ODIN?
If memory serves.. and you're really stuck on recovery as the only option you're going to need to find a way to dump an update.zip onto the phone to get anything to flash. And here's the tricky part - I think it needs to be in a certain location. There are custom .ZIPs that have signatures on them - crawj might even be able to help with that.
If we can't get you to Odin then let's figure out how you can use the recovery to do that... recover. But let's hope we can find you a way to get into Odin one way or another.

Where would I find signed Zip files to try to restore to FI27? Thanks.

Wait... You can get into the system?
Then why not download the Mobile Odin Lite (free here on XDA), flash Agat's 0.6.0 repack and then crawj's FI27 rooted .ZIP through Agat's recovery?
That should not only fix the Odin problem but everything else!

Tried that, Mobile Odin won't work because I don't have root.
