I would love to see boot manager ported to the kindle fire as we have multiple ROMs that I can't decide which to stay on.. I have some knowledge with android in general and little development knowledge, but I don't have the slightest clue on where to start with boot manager.
Anyways, this would be awesome. And I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants it.

I'm 'working' on it, as in I've given the devs some information they need (I don't think they have a Kindle Fire to work from) and bug them about it, but it is up to them to add compatibility.

I've done some beta testing for them in the past. Got a hold of him yesterday, provided some files, tested some beta versions.... as of right now its somewhat working. I have cm9 as my "phone rom" cm7 and miui installed to different slots and am able to reboot into each one via the app. There is some issues to be worked out tho. But official support shouldn't be too far away
Yep, I have been told that the next version should have official support!
Now all we need is USB host, or some way to solder in an SD Card... That internal space is looking mighty tight...
BTW, how is the performance on the SD ROMs? I'm thinking they should be pretty fast, since it is just one area, yes?

Looking to bring you guys into the action. I'm gonna purchase a kindle fire online on Monday and then make a toolkit on it.
Just a few questions.
You guys use Fastboot commands or no?
Ex: Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, Fastboot flash boot boot.img
A personal question myself, since there is no removable battery, is there a button trick to shut it off if it freezes?
I have to put all this into consideration when I make the toolkit.

Why is it necessary to flash a different bootloader? (I should be reading on it now, but I'll get a better analysis on it when I order it)

the device requires different drivers for adb/fastboot.
once u get adb working, and reboot into fastboot, it usually doesn't get seen by the PC. its one of the biggest issues and lots of people have them when rooting.

Fastboot works real well with the fire. Its a nice device to use with adb and fastboot.
The drivers are really finicky and once you get them set up....don't change anything with regard to your computer as far as your kindle fire development setup. The trick for me (windows 8) is to force disable windows driver signing protocol and to use the windows device manager and USB deview to get the kindle fire drivers established. I would not start off with the kindle fire utility kit or put that in the same directory as your kindle fire development file.
Its a great device and I think a new toolkit does no harm and promotes further development. I strongly advise using TWRP recovery and not clockwork mod as there's some unresolved issues with damaged emmc partitions causing brickedness. (See hashcodes thread with regard to cwm recovery for the 3.0 kernel)
That 3.0 kernel (by Hashcode) pumped massive growth into this device as we did not have hardware acceleration prior to that (outside of the Amazon forked build.)
Now I've no idea what a toolkit is but I'll help test drive anyhow. What's the other toolkit? Vashypoors KFU? That is a nice setup but IMHO people ought to be able to handle ADB and fastboot business before using that KFU or any other toolkit.
You asked about the bootloader? Great write up about why the stock image was replaced by FIREFIREFIRE by Pokey9000 I'll try to find it later but it should be one if the stickied threads here. You can't do a thing with the stock bootloader.

Now Im going to get a bit straightforward, dont get me wrong --- these toolkits are great, but they are akin to giving just about anyone on the street a loaded gun... toolkits give an absolute noob or a person who has absolutely no idea whatsoever what they are doing a false sense of security and they believe they have full control of the device where they clearly do not. You effectively give people the easy mind-numbingly-easy opportunity to change something on their device and then they have no idea what its doing or how to get out of any predicament. Thankfully, there are things called "Drivers-Education" and then a "Test" prior to all 16 year olds getting permission to operate motor vehicles!
IT WOULD be cool if you made your toolkit lockable which is unlocked only by the user successfully performing various executions of simple adb and fastboot activities.... i use these toolkits only when my keyboard is broke, or my hands are broke or otherwise occupied by children.

If you use the KFU on your kindle to root everything should go well. You may encounter problems if you do it manually at least I did a little a bit others my have not. For the driver issue the KFU comes with drivers use them instead when your computer asks for the location. I wish you luck with the toolkit the more the merrier

While I'm a huge proponent of the manual method of rooting/modifying the Kindle Fire, I don't think having programs like the KFU is a major problem. The only way Kindle Fire development is going to grow is with more users, even if those users are noobs looking to take the easy way out. The more popular the device becomes, the more likely experienced developers will jump on board.
There really isn't much you can do about people who refuse to follow directions or educate themselves before getting into trouble, other than complaining about it and posting stupid threads like "This is what you people sound like". It all comes with the territory, especially in a world where a mentally retarded two year old can jailbreak an iPhone and feel like a genius afterwards.
As long as people are still searching for the "any" key, I'll still be mumbling TSTFO and yelling HLMGIFY until my face turns blue but I'll be more than willing to put up with it to see this community grow and get some awesome development in the process. So yes, I say bring on the Toolkit, the worst that could happen is I get more fuel for my sick sense of humor.

First, I loved the link to the humor thread. I started laughing because we always deal with that!
Second, I agree. Manual method is the way to go for new users to learn in case anything happens. I just hate doing commands manually all the time so I automate them to make it easier on me.
I would need you guys to help out since you guys have way more experience than me with the Kindle (I'm gonna order it soon). As long as you guys don't mind, then this will definitely come!

No offense taken! Positive criticism at its finest! lol. You really gave me a lot of info and helped out. As I said earlier, I'm new to this. (Still didn't order the kindle yet) so I'm trying to gather all the knowledge so I have a heads up.
I will user TWRP and not add CWM since we don't want anyone to have bad partitions. If you can, link me why the bootloader was replaced by FFF so I have an understanding on that please

I did have users who had no clue start using the toolkit. The issues they had were not reading the Post I have on Bugs (A directory issue) and they say it doesn't work. The other issue was root (which I fixed) and flashing a GB kernel onto an ICS ROM. They didn't know what it was and thought it was mandatory (even though it is under the optional section) and soft bricked their phones. I removed kernels and if they want to flash a kernel, they have to do it themselves so they can't blame me or anything.

kinfauns wrote an excellent "Kindle Fire for Beginners" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547) which goes into the details of things like why the stock bootloader was replaced w/ FFF. Main benefits of FFF is that it kicks in a temporary fastboot, and also enables easy access to recovery.
In the above-linked document, look under the "How do I unbrick my Kindle Fire?" heading for details of the benefits of FFF's temporary fastboot and access to recovery.
Having been a flashaholic, tinkerer and dabbling themer type on my Moto Droid X for the last 1.25 yrs (with several soft-bricks along the way), the general concepts w/ the Kindle Fire were familiar but the devil's in the details. Okay I have been searching for hours, trying to root my kindle Fire. I installed the drivers as showed. Im showing up in device manager under android phone / android adb interface. When I run the kindle fire Utility It comes up and says ADB status Online, Boot status unknown. I have tried plugin right into the back of the computer with the USB cord thinking it was the hub from comments i read in another thread but no luck. I have also reinstalled the drivers several times, at one point restarting after every step and still no luck. Any help on this please?
You might have a kindle fire 2. Check your firmware revision in device info or about device or whatever its called in settings. If its 10.something you probably have a 2. It has a faster processor and more ram but it has a locked bootloader that no one has said they are actively working on as of yet. Hopefully someone will pick it up soon. It can be rooted and have Gapps installed but no custom recovery which means no custom ROMs. If you develop or know someone, give it a shot. I know there are at least a few people eager to have a full tablet.

Thanks for the reply I never did get it to change, I went ahead and took a chance and rooted it anyways with the tool, everthing worked perfect. I now have it running android 4.1
I came upon this device on Christmas (a gift from my girlfriend to her father) and wanted to root it and also install clockworkmod recovery, so I could mess with it a bit without bricking it. Since I found a lack of tailored guides for it, I decided to write this one, although I really did no actual development whatsoever. Normally I would be posting this on general, but given the spirit of this forum, I guess I'll just leave it here. Also, keep in mind I don't have the device anymore and am writing this from memory. If I missed anything or you have any doubts, please let me know (for example, I can't recall specifically the drivers I installed to make it work properly).
Please, please read the whole guide before trying anything, and if you are a novice user, just leave this be, I don't want you to turn your tablet into a paperweight because of my shoddy instructions written from memory and you probably don't need any of this anyway as there are no custom roms yet.
!!!DISCLAIMER!!!: As stated above, anything you do is at your own risk. I provided the procedures that worked for me on a Qilive 97r tablet, which is an Auchan branded ARCHOS 97b Platinum HD, so my step by step should work for all of you. There are probably easier ways to do this, and I hint at them in the guide, but beware I have not tried them and cannot vouch for them. In fact, I cannot and will not take any responsability if you brick your device following these instructions, correctly or otherwise. You do this at YOUR OWN RISK. You have been warned!
Rooting:
I followed this guide on Windows 7 x64 and it worked perfectly.
So thanks to dhigby for that. I would just like to make a couple of remarks:
When you get to step 7 (Installing Superuser by ChainDD), don't. Install SuperSU by Chainfire instead, Use it to update the superuser binary (I think a prompt shows up) and when asked, let it delete the "other" superuser applications, that is, the chinese one. Clean and easy, you don't need to follow any more steps.
Congratulations, you now have (english language) root!
Clockworkmod Recovery:
There is no specific recovery for this device. Fortunately, thanks to AndroTab.info, there's a generic version for 3188 devices that you'll see should work quite nicely, albeight with some caveats.
What works:
Nandroid backup to/from external SDCard (won't recognize internal)
Installing zip files should also work, although I didn't try it at the time, as the device wasn't mine and I can't since I don't have it anymore, but since it mounts system partitions perfectly well I wouldn't think there would be a problem. Try it at your own risk though.
Other things probably work, give it a try.
What doesn't work:
Internal SDCard access
Probably other things
Installation:
Now that you have a rooted tablet, installing clockworkmod recovery is easy-peasy. Go to developer options and enable USB Debugging, then make sure you have a working adb daemon (look it up) that recognizes your tablet.
NOTE: I'm not sure if I had to install any specific drivers for this to work, I think if so they were installed while rooting by the chinese app. Anyhow, here's the Rockchip drivers, you might want to try to install them if you can't get a connection: http://www.rockchip.nl/downloads/
Download the file RK30GENERIC_CWM.zip from here - that's the recovery.
Now extract flash_image and recovery.img from the downloaded file above to the folder where you have your adb and follow the following commands.
Push the files to /dev partition on the device:

adb push recovery.img /dev/
Then enter root shell, like so:

Now flash recovery.img into recovery partition with flash_image:

chmod 755 /dev/flash_image
/dev/flash_image recovery /dev/recovery.img
Now power off your device. To enter recovery press volume down then the power button and keep them pressed until CWM boots. Voilá!
NOTE: The instructions above were adapted from here and all credit goes to AndroTab.info ; I posted these particular instructions because they are the ones I used and worked for me; there are other methods listed on that page which might or might not work, TRY THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Backing up your original recovery (for warranty, if anything goes wrong, etc.)
To obtain a backup image of your recovery \ restore it back afterwards, follow this guide here. All credit goes to Originalas.
Don't follow it to the letter though: first and foremost, you need a working linux installation. If you don't have one, I recommend Wubi.
Then:
Follow step 1;
Ignore step 2 (it's outdated);
Follow 3;
Follow 4 - but don't expect the screen to turn on, it won't, just hold the volume down button for 10 seconds or so after plugging it in, don't press the power button!
Ignore 5, 6 and 7
Follow 8, but don't use the last command to flash the CWM recovery onto the device. This is because since it is a generic version, it relies on the original recovery kernel. Flashing the image like stated in step 8 would probably overwrite the kernel and result in no recovery at all (I might be wrong about this).
Do follow the last command to restore your own backup if you ever need to.
I am unsure if recovery dumps obtained in this way are device specific; I don't see a reason why they should be, so I'll provide you with my own backup:
ORIGINAL RECOVERY
Flash through any method of your choice, but keep in mind I haven't tried this on other devices, so, as you know by now DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Closing remarks:
There you have it. Sorry for not holding your hand through every step, but this is meant for people who know a bit of what they're doing, making it faster than having to look up and figure out all these things and quirks on their own. If you have any doubts don't hesitate to ask, but keep in mind I don't have the device anymore and don't know much more than what I have written here. I do appreciate feedback and corrections, and will gladly change the guide giving you full credit - if it's really urgent just PM me, I might not check this thread often.

I wouldn't keep my hopes up on custom roms. The software is really bad and what it does with the hardware is terrible. It's like a bunch of chipmunks put the code together by randomly typing into a keyboard.
That said, the likelihood of a new kernel to fix that is next to nil. However, since the ROM is as far as I can tell pretty near stock, you can get a pretty good experience from the device by installing gravity box xposed module. I also recommend trickstermod and changing the governor to performance, as well as some kernel tweaking if you know what you are doing.
Also, very important, limit the amount of processes running in the background to 3 in dev settings or change the used memory limit to something like 1.2 gb. It has 2 gb of RAM, but, as I said, the ROM sucks, the system eats away a full gigabyte, and it doesn't effectively kill background apps, leaving you with a sluggish device if you multitask.
Anyway, those are just some ideas, if you have some more or would like to code for this device, feel free to share Also, as I always say, give it time. You never know who is gonna get they're hands on the device and do something amazing with it.

yes i saw that it's almost stock but crappy optimized...in the very first start of the tablet i had 1.8gb occupied by nothing and clean master always notifies me that 90% of the ram is busy...meh
maybe just a kernel will fix like you say but you know, android 4.4 will be a must (rockchip already released sdk for 3188). I am not a coder (totally zero) but i will try your suggestion...just a question about the performance governor, does it drain more battery?

Hi guys , if any body can help me with my tablet Qilive 97r, when I tryed to install new rom via RK development tool there was an error, and my tablet do not booting any more, just black display, do not know what to do, maybe somebody know where I can download original rom , and original installer, I will be thankful for that's.

Hello, i need help , if somebody know where I can download original rom , and original installer, I will be thankful for that's.
I am really green at all this hacking stuff and read the forums as much and often as i can. I have a suggestion which may help i know it would me>
When all you hard working hackers and i and many others appreciate all your hard work put up a tut or a procedure it would be nice if there was a place in the corner that listed what devices it will work on ex. kindle fire 7" 7"hd or 8.9hd also which build of the rom it will work on ex. 8.4.1 or 8.4.8
I know they are in separate forums but still really confusing. Or even a chart showing the different root programs that would be updated as things progress. Just a suggestion from a new guy trying to learn from you smart hard working guys and girls.

i think the dev section has somethign similar to that, i fyou goto the sub-forum for your device, look for a "all things kindle fire hd(insertmodelhere)"
Not sure if it's kept up to date as i don't ever use it except for reference for links. The flashing process is always going to be the same, so theres not much need to say if it works with x.4.8, only difference is, is that whenever theres not a current freedomboot image it will bootloop into recovery, so you would need to know to either put the rom on ahead of tiem before you install 2nd bootloader and twrp or you would have to push it. Actually i think they should just add that to the tutorials at then end, just add a notice (if your version of amazon os is newer than current freedomboot, put rom on sdcard ahead of time)

As the title says, I'm pretty noob when it comes to rooting and custom roms. I have a Kindle Fire Gen 1 that just ins't cutting it for me anymore. I'd like to use it as the screen for my DJI Phantom, but the DJI app is only available for Android and iOS. So, I needed to root this device and I'd like to turn it into a typical Android tablet. I followed SD Shadows tutorials across multiple threads to get to to where I am now; Rooted w/ TWRP installed (openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.1-blaze.img). The last step I got to was what he covers in his video here:

In that video he warns that if someone is going to install a custom ROM, they need to make sure it is compatible w/ the TWRP used. My problem is, when I go to browse the various custom ROM options here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859851), I don't see where they describe the TWRP required for compatibility. I'm just wanting a simple ROM that is clean and efficient that (preferably) has Google's Play Store already installed and will let me use this device with the DJI Vision App (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dji.vision&hl=en).
Can anyone spare a moment to help me out? I don't want to install an incompatible ROM and get myself in a bad situation. I'll provide whatever info I can to anyone willing to help me out here. Just remember that I am a noob, so you may need to explain what you need in simple, easy to understand terms. =D
