[A] Improving GPS fix times - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This thread is going to be a work in progress, mainly because I'm at work right now and I can't spend the next several hours typing everything out.
I recently purchased a Epic 4G Touch last week and like many people, have been suffering from GPS fix issues. After some playing around today with my phone, I seem to have a possible solution. I'll be working on step-by-step instructions in the future. Do be aware that you WILL need your MSL for this.
For those familiar with QPST, there's a tab in SERVICE PROGRAMMING called gpsOne, which details the different GPS capabilities that are enabled. Since cellphones aren't using true GPS and are using A-GPS, one of the "assisted" capabilities are enabled, but there are additional capabilities that can be enabled. What you want to do is enable everything.
AFLT stands for Advanced Forward Link Trilateration. You can read about it here. You want to enable this along with GPS/AFLT Hybrid.
As far as I can tell, "Autonomous" will let your GPS function like true GPS without needing cell tower data downloaded to your phone. I imagine it'll take several minutes to obtain a lock like this, but I don't see what the harm is in enabling it.
In a rushed ending, I want to reiterate that you WILL need your MSL to do all this. You also need to turn off USB debugging and type in ##8778# and change AP to CP. Set that back to AP after you're done. You also need the debugging drivers installed. I promise I'll edit this post with more detailed instructions in the near future. For the moment, you should be able to follow the instructions in this post to accomplish the same thing.
Also, since doing this to my phone, I get a lock in about 10 to 20 seconds, or less.

This doesn't seem to do anything for me, i enabled all the settings in the gpsOne Tab but when i enabled airplane mode the phone does not find any satellites when using GPS Test. i would like to just put it the way it was, what are the default settings for the Epic 4g Touch?

[HOW TO] Enable stand-alone/antonymous GPS on Epic 4G
I find the Epic GPS to work very well generally, especially in custom ROMs like CM7. That said it all falls apart whn trying to use the GPS in airplane mode or when overseas (or other areas with no CDMA cellular coverage). From what I can determine the Epic 4G was not configured properly to use the GPS chip in these circumstances.
To fix this issue you need to change the GPS settings on the actual gpsOne chip. This will allow the phone to get a GPS signal when in airplane mode and/or not within a CDMA service area. The procedure is time consuming and annoying but in may experience, worth it.
DISCLAMER – the below how-to could completely brick your phone. I have NO IDEA what I’m doing.
You will need to download some software to begin:
1. Qualcomm Product Support Tools (QPST) v.2.7.355 (or newer) – I don’t think I can post that link so Google it.
2. Epic 4G Windows USB drivers - http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ow...SPH-D700ZKASPR
3. MSL code – there are a number of ways of obtaining this so I will not duplicate here.
Step 1:
Obtain your MSL. If you can’t get this, you can’t complete this fix
Step 2:
Install the Epic 4G Windows USB drivers. Assuming you are rooted and or otherwise used ODIN you may already have these installed. Installing again will hurt nothing.
Step 3:
NOTE: So far as I can figure your phone needs to be in stock form to continue from this point on. I tried the rest of this while running CM7 – Nightly 13 and it would not work (particular issues seem to be dial codes and USB modem connectivity). Once finished with the fix you can then flash back to whatever ROM you would like. So…ODEN back to stock.
Open in the dialer and enter ##8778#. This will bring up the “PhoneUtil” menu. Set both UART and USB to MODEM and hit the home button.
Step 4:
Install Qualcomm Product Support Tools (QPST)
Step 5:
Insure that USB debugging is off. Connect the Epic 4G to your computer. The computer should make the usual USB connection noises and may begin installing drivers. Let that that finish.
Step 6:
Open QPST Configuration (installed when you installed QPST) and go the Ports tab, add a new port and select your port number. If nothing shows up uncheck the “show serial….blah blah” box and it will show your port number, select it and add it. You will now see your COM port with your phone connected. Close that.
Step 7:
Open client QPST Service Programming, select your active phone (might take a moment to come up), click "Read from phone" (enter MSL) and then scroll over to gpsOne and select all the options on the left hand side:
Assistance-Spherical
Assistance-Cartesian
AFLT
GPS Almanac
GPS Ephemeris
GPS Almanac Correction
Autonomous
GPS/AFLT Hybrid
……then click “Write to Phone.” When that’s done click “connection” and “close” and then close the program.
This may cause your phone to reboot…if not, reboot it.
Step 8:
Open in the dialer and enter ##8778#. This will bring up the “PhoneUtil” menu. Set UART to Modem (USB to PDA) and hit the home button….reboot again.
Step 9:
You should no be able to use the GPS while in airplane mode or (especially) after booting up in an area without CDMA coverage.
TIPS: If you should clear you AGPS settings for some reason (or they expire?) and you want to use the GPS anonymously without a CDMA or WiFi connection, you will need to reboot the phone first (and possibly disable “use wireless networks” in Location Settings until some new AGPS data is obtained). One way to obtain some AGPS data in absence of a CDMA network is to use an app like GPS Test to load some AGPS data back into the phone via WiFi. Also it may be possible to improve this by refining the gpsOne settings…but you would need to figure out what the hell they all mean.
This solution works for me.
Good luck

[GPS Troubleshoot] Sprint ET4G GPS Fix discussion

Unfortunately, I've become a veteran when it comes to ET4G GPS problems.
This thread is intended to summarize ET4G GPS issues, reported fixes, troubleshooting advice, and GPS related conversation in hopes of determining the root cause. Could be fixable, could be hardware, but I really want to get to the bottom of it. Let’s try.
I have been all around XDA and the rest of the interwebs for solutions. My personal frustration has been that most GPS issue posts result in standard advice to: download GPS Test from the market, re-install your ROM, or get back to stock and start over. That's actually great advice, and I've pursued it - just doesn't make a difference for some of us. Still worth a shot though.
Several members have great threads concerning specific approaches, and I'll reference those members and threads here. I don’t know of a true fix, but some trickery/mods appear to help a bit.
I’ll do my best to keep this up to date – referenced threads will include their own updates. If/when a true GPS fix pops-up…that’d be super! Let me know so we can validate and kill this thread.
My reference of “True Fix” refers to getting a fast, consistent, nav worthy GPS lock as the default operation, meaning no special mods of config file edits or special software. Kinda like if the GPS functionality on the device actually did what it was supposed to do. Alot of these options assume that you have root, if you don't want to root your device, best to talk to your local sprint store instead of XDA. The bright side of this approach: it may be the best one if this is purely hardware.
SO, if you have crap GPS on your ET4G and you want to take ownership of the issue (including whatever hell breaks loose when you start changing stuff) here is a fairly comprehensive list of the hoops that you can jump through at your own risk:
#1 USER ERROR Maybe you messed it up. I’m no expert, so when I root a phone and load unsanctioned software on it…I look in the mirror when I have problems.
Go back to stock and play normal. Thank SFHUB for compiling a great thread with reference to root, revert and more.
Wipe and retry flashing a recent release of your favorite ROM. Thank BARNACLES10 who has compiled damn near everything here.
JUST_S has a thorough reference thread (including a GPS section) here.
QBKING77 provides another awesome resource. If you are like me, pictures help. Moving pictures help even more and Qbking makes scores of great preview and instructional picture shows for the community.
#2 A-GPS tools Try augmenting your A-GPS by downloading apps that help your clear and refresh assisted GPS data and look for sats.
As I mentioned, Just_s has a GPS post on his reference thread listing apps and other goodies to try. I'm not trying replace that list, but will reference some of the same items as we'll refer to these in discussion of test results.
Here are the GPS helper apps that I've know of and have used:
GPS Test (has cool features even if your GPS is working great)
GPS Status & Toolbox
FasterFix
GPS Essentials
These apps are free and provide a myriad of GPS related stuff, including options to clear and update/refresh your A-GPS.
#3 Dialer codes
Some dialer codes may require you to enter your MSL (see Just_s thread for how to get yours).
It may be possible to reset the GPS with a dialer code. A code that we used in the past ##GPSCLRX## worked on the EVO 4g. Some users report it to be working on the ET4G, but I have been unable to confirm. This code requests my MSL, but does not appear to reboot after entry (which is what occurred on the EVO when entered).
I would LOVE to provide a link to the ET4G dialer codes here, but until I find a great source and will hold off. Several of the threads I have seen reference other phones and appear to by copy/paste from prior lists. I can get some of them to work, but not all (including the GPSCLRX). I don't want to keep publishing those - I'll list confirmed as working ET4G dialer codes as I validate. Of course, there is a chance (see #1 above) that I am doing something wrong here and will update this section as soon as someone sets me straight.
update: Here are the dialer codes and tests that I've completed. Don't mess with these for fun, just use if you know what you are doing and you need them.

Here are some options that are sprinkled throughout XDA, often in forums other than the ET4G.
#4 DRIVERS Leaving room for more here, but as of now there are reports that flashing an alternate GPS driver may do something. This could be a sasquatch siting, but perhaps the sasquatch knocks something into place when flashed from CWM.
EVO Driver. Tough for me to locate the origin of this one, but daryelv is credited elsewhere and ebuechler3 has this thread. This daryelv post includes the file for DL as well.
colorado_al provides a different file to flash in this thread. Thanks!

#5 GPS Config file edits
At some point during your ET4G GPS woes, you ask yourself "what more can I do?", which is good! Sniffing around, you'll find that there is a config file used by the device GPS. There are some very interesting and quite brilliant mods being made here, with reports of improvement.
This thread by AngelDeath is incredible. AngelDeath bumped up the logic and intelligence of the GPS config. Impressive stuff, complete with fantastic write-up with pre-made files for your flashing consumption.
Xenova also has a great thread, providing instructions on making your own mods.
interloper also has a config file post here
#6 REPLACEMENT
Of course, taking the device back to Sprint and obtaining a replacement is an option. Might be a really good option and many members have reported it to resolve the issue.
If you took this approach, please share the experience. Specifically:
Did it resolve the issue or did you have to seek a 2nd replacement?
If resolved, did you notice anything identifyably different about the replacement like a different hardware version (menu>settings>about phone) or physical change?
How was the Sprint experience? Did they give you hell? Did they admit that they knew of an issue and were obliged to replace? Any information you can provide here could make it easier or faster for others.
If you have no GPS issues at all, congrats! For those of us that do, let's solidify what works and what doesn't. As great as it would be to find a fix, it will be equally rewarding to pin it down to certain devices so we can at least know that our only option is to exchange the device.
If you do jump in and post something along the lines of "my gps is working great ", please share your ROM, Baseband and Kernel in the hope that we'll discover a combo that is devoid of GPS bug.
I've personally clogged up other threads with meandering GPS talk, I hope this thread can help alleviate that issue while providing a place to discuss GPS specifically.
Will incorporate other information sources here.
The below video (by lattisimo) offers some evidence supporting hardware as the issue source. He received a replacement and demos GPS locking on the old and replacement :

Re: #1
Here's what I did to mitigate issues that I may have caused:
1. used sfhub's back to stock
2. After allowing everything time to settle down, I turned GPS on and popped into the accuweather on first screen and tried to use my location. Was unable to obtain location.
3. Cleared GPS (##GPSCLRX# from dialer, entered my MSL). Hit OK to clear, but it did not reboot. Since there was no reboot, it is not clear if this did anything at all. I let it sit for 10 min then rebooted manually.
4. Went to GMaps after reboot (GPS on only, no network location) and got the standard "current location is temporarily unavailable" message.
5. Went ahead and cleared VRAM/Sprint login info (##72786# dialer, enter MSL, activation process. Reboot.
6. After reboot, still stock - let her sit for 5-10 mins. Got a notification for update (which is the EK02 2.3.6 official update). DLed and installed. Reboot, let it sit for 5min.
7. Back to maps, hit the location button - waited - after about 60 secs, I was found, accuracy was within 100 meters. Exit maps, back in, was located within 40 meters.
8. Exit maps - turned on sensor aiding, but left wireless network location OFF. Back to maps, "current location is temporarily unavailable", waited and hit it again- "current location is temporarily unavailable".
9. Exit maps, turned sensor aiding off, back to maps. Location found in about 20 secs, within 20 meters. Not too bad - no f'in idea why sensor aiding seemed to screw stuff up for a second. Sats cycled through found and dropped, still flaky.
Finding= GPS issues don't appear to be caused by my meddling
Re: #2
I used fasterfix initially (which BTW does reset your GPS config file back to original state). This is important to know if you are using GPS config file mods as fasterfix will overwrite them. Quick to find sats, but not a big help when it comes to NAV. Still lost signal a couple of times and flowed in and out of proximity (based on the number of sats connected).
Essentially the same result with all of the others.
Finding= AGPS updates help find sats, but doesn't seem to help keep them locked.
Re: #3
##GPSCLRX# doesn't work, don't have any leads to pursue here.
Finding = no dice
Re: #5
The use of custom GPS config files definitely improved my GPS function. AngelDeath's area-customized files are really nice work.
That being said, even while sitting still in my office, I see my location drifting over an area of about 500 meters. When using navigation, I was able to maintain a lock of 5-6 sats, which was useful. Unfortunately, this did cause the NAV to think I was on access roads (when I was on highway) or on the incorrect cross street at an intersection. Impressive work, and a major improvement, but still not solid.
FINDING= Improves lock speed, automates A-GPS refresh, but does not provide enough stability to count on your navigation. You'll get to your location - which is an improvement - but you may have a few missed turns or U turns along the way...
NICE WORK!
Nice work putting this together. Hopefully some positive things will come from it.
Like you, I have tried everything. Coming to this phone I knew that Samsung was known for crappy GPS performance. From day 1 the GPS has been hit or miss. Seems to work best after a reboot. I never get a lock indoors and outside it's hit or miss. So far I've ran stock, ViperRom and currently on Calkulin's 2.7 ROM. I've tried difference drivers, the config files and all the apps. Things seem great at first and go to crap within a day or so.
Considering that it always seems to be better after a reboot, I've wondered if there could be script or something to reset the GPS automatically. Much like Viper's LOS script and more recently the LOS Repair Daemon by Trifthen.
I'll be watching this closely.
every phone reacts differently to different solutions. the ultimate solution is to just have sprint replace it with a new one that doesn't have gps problems.
This is a pretty major issue so I'm glad you took the initiative to start a GPS specific thread. IMO, this is the last major issue on this phone (LoS and sound/ games bug having been resolved in the latest leaks.)
I'm going to link this thread in the Toolkit because I think it is going to get some good movement. I'm also going to list any new methods that may arise. Don't think you can have too much information on this type of issue. And every phone reacts differently so many options is a good thing. Thanks for doing this.
All that said, as mentioned in the post above mine, based on everything I've learned, I really believe this is a hardware issue. A return may be the only real fix.

Thanks - agree as to it being the final issue, a shame as I really love the phone. I'm certainly leaning the way of hardware as well. I hope to prove it...somehow...

I hear ya, will be taking mine in soon enough, just want to get to the bottom of the issue (if possible). When you exchanged yours, how did that go? Curious to see if they admitted that it was a known hardware issue - what information did they offer?
I've really let Sprint have it mad more times than I can remember, but it expends alot of time and energy. Since there are many people with the issue, if we can collect enough info from experiences like yours, perhaps we can provide some ammo for them to expedite the replacement when they commence the "confrontation".
It seems like GPS craps out after the phone goes to sleep for me. Looking in GPS Status, it's finding satellites but not locking onto any of them. I've tried to disable and re-enable GPS but that doesn't help, only a restart does.
Edit: Found a fix for my issue! Opened Terminal Emulator, typed gpsd, hit enter and the GPS service came back. Not sure what's causing it to die in the first place but I imagine it can be fixed in an update.

I'd love to do that except for the fact that I don't want to pay the deductible because of the ****ty GPS. Sigh.
Undervolting really messes up my GPS and Data Speeds. You might want to add this to the list of things to check.

Do what I did go to Odin then Odin a kernel in the phone slot. This creates a soft brick. If you want to unbrick Odin a modem in the phone phone slot. Take it to sprint say say I don't know wat happened. (When it tries to boot it will just say you have to update drivers. They sent me a new one to the store with no paying a deductible.

The CM7/EVO driver was the only fix I tried, but currently works for me. May be a placebo effect, but it only takes a few seconds to lock on now. (used to take up to a minute if at all) This is on EK02 rooted stock btw. I'm gonna test it some more once I move back to my college town.

Had you experienced issues prior to EL29? I am on Calk's 2.8, EL29 all the way. No change for me.
EVO driver was the only fix that reliably works for me. Tried it with all radio/modem updates and first fix is now within 10-20 seconds and GPS position is also more accurate. This is the one I used with my EVO and have been using with the E4GT.
Edit - different driver than posted by OP but is what I used for my CM7.1 EVO and works for my E4GT - this is qualcomm 1.1 driver
I normally don't use any scripts or other GPS setup programs but if a fix is not found within 30 seconds I do try GPS Status. Fix is fastest in GMaps, but also good in GNavigation and TeleNav
PS- must flash after flashing ROM or ROM updates
Curently on Calk's 2.7 and modem EL29
Currently running CM7/EVO driver + a gps script and it's been running way better. Prior to installing driver I just had the script. With the driver, it seems to lock even faster with stronger locks. I'll keep testing it out the rest of the week.
Knock on wood that this is a fix for me. Like others have said, getting a new phone is the only real consistent option.
I've never had GPS issues, running EL29 modem and kernel and Blazer ROM. I guess I got lucky. I used to have so many issues with my old EVO, especially on AOSP. Glad I dodged the bullet on this one

Thanks, driver testing is next for me. I've updated the postings and actually had some improvement with AngelDeath's config file for my area. Not perfect, but certainly better than before. I kinda hate the config file approach though - I travel for work and need GPS to avoid getting lost (which is a talent of mine). Just want GPS to work. When I was overseas with my good 'ol EVO, the geotagged pictures worked flawlessly - was not connected to any network or wifi the whole time.

Very slow GPS

Anyone know how to speed up the GPS on S8500 Bada 2?
Sometimes, it doesn't even connect and makes me crazy.
I think GPS is useless on Wave
Yes, GPS is very slow. For me, that is one of the two big 'let downs' of the Wave. Don't get me wrong, I think the Wave is a lovely piece of hardware, except for the GPS. To find out if the GPS is working at all, do the following:
1. Enter *#7092463*# (This will get you into the internal menu)
2. Select 4. Module Setting > 4. COMM > 2. Lbs (This is your starting point for several adjustments)
3. Select 4. Settings > 5. Assist Method. Select AGPS (This will make sure, that the phone uses only the internal GPS, and it's not aided by network location)
4. Now go back to the Lbs menu (starting point as mentioned earlier). Select 1. Tracking test. (Start it preferably outside or close to a window, this will help with reception).
You'll see a list of data: GPS-time, Latitude, longitude,.... position source should be GPS. Now you just have to wait. This could take longer than 10 minutes, the first time. So just be patient. After that, it probably takes 2-3min, depending on reception.
What is also suggested by many others, is using the app "GPS status". If you want to get a quick(er) lock for navigation or some sports tracker, start that app up first. Wait to you get the lock and then start the app you want.
Hopefully this will help you. Good luck!

Well, the GPS is still weak/slow even in AGPS mode

treve wifi tether issue

Im running treve mod to tether wifi on my optimus g. I have the latest updates from sprint and im rooted on the stock rom. It worked fine for a while.
I then developed an issue when if I was using two conntections *ie, me on my pc and my gf on hers, It would stop working after a while of use. Now I just couldn't visit any new web pages, if I was say, watching a youtube video or playing an online game it would continue to play, But when i tried to visit a new webpage Id get the cant reach server error. This would typically occur after a few hours of use.
Then it progressed to doing this after shorter an shorter time periods when we both use the connection, to the point where we'd both surf for perhaps 20 minutes and It would stop working.
Now its to the point where whether we both use it or not the connection only lasts maximum an hour, sometimes as little as 10 min. Same thing though If im paying a game or on youtube it will continue to play thought but new pages wont load. Its like established connections stay connected but I cant make any new ones.
So, the temporary fix I've found is just the untether wait 5 seconds and retether. Its annoying.
I've tried a few different versions, most recent that I know are 11-22-12 and the one i just installed today is 3.2 beta2 modv5
My settings are what was posted here:
wlan0 (when i try others my pc cant connect)
netd-ndc (master)
send netd cliend cmd ( tried turning this off no change)
wifi driver reload (I tried checking reload 2 in addition to the first, and tried just reload 2, or none checked)
mms clamping
routing fix
Its really starting to become discouraging. I don't understand how it would work fine for a while then slowly and progressively deteriorate. (its been over the course on 8 months or so to get to this point.
soooo I my hope is that someone else has an idea, im running out!
I have all the same settings except I have disable wake lock checked. Not sure if that makes a difference. I haven't updated to ZVC yet just in case wifi tether has issues with it. I really want to update just to get rid of the notification. Will be paying attention to see if you get it fixed. My wifi tether has good and bad days though. I think it depends on the signal I get. Where i use it has a weak signal. Sometimes a restart works and other times I fight with it all day. On average though, I can run it all day long without issues. Oh, and I'm using the same version of Wifi tether.
I have wake lock checked also. Forgot about that.
These tether problems started before the update, I installed the update and nothing changed.
As for your weak signal, I can relate and ill tell you what I did.
I live in the country, on the sprint map I'm outside of 4g service by about a mile. I was getting a 3g signal and almost no bars, Id have to go outside to talk. I got a wilson sleek universal from the 3gstore. (not to advertise any single company you can get em all over) my talk bars went to max with it, and with the little antenna I could get a 4g signal. BUT then summer came and i assume the foliage blocked my signal. I was back to 3g most the time and 4g sometimes. So i got this outdoor universal antenna from the same place. Now I have 4glte signal all the time, ranging from 6meg to 14 meg down, so it works really well. I Just have the antenna in my window too even though its meant to be mounted on the roof.
back to the tethering, I loaded up a custom rom on my gf galaxy s3 that has the built in hotspot hack. So I'm going to see if that one works. Id prefer to keep my phone because, well, I just think the optimus G is 10x the phone. But having internet is more important. The only other internet provider in my area is cable company that has a 10 meg line going to THEM! Meaning I get 0.9 meg downloads if im lucky with them.
Im going to continue to play with the treve mod, and try to get it working again, hopefully someone has an idea.
I tried setting up access control thinking perhaps if I limit it to just the two pcs it would help ( i have a tablet, and my home theater setup all connect) i couldnt connect at all when i did this.
You know, I just thought about it. You said you have the same settings and version. This makes me think that perhaps
A; sprint has caught on to my usage and is locking it down on me? (but so far the galaxy tether has no issues, different phone on same account)
B; Is it possible some other device I have in my house is messing up the optimus g's signal?
I still can't get this working, I also tried the galaxy s3 with its native hotspot enabled and same thing, after about 10 minutes i can't access new pages, but i can watch netflix all night long.
this has to be sprint cutting my connection off right? They can tell im not accessing mobile sites or what?
anyone have an idea?

I GOT THIS OFF ANOTHER SITE BECAUSE I HAD PROBLEMS TOO....
Download Wifi Tether TrevE Mod APK
Step 2. Open the Wifi Tether app, hit Menu button and hit “Settings”
Step 3. Press on “Change Device-Profile”.
Step 4. Choose “Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)”.
Step 5. Choose “Change Setup-Method”.
Step 6. Choose “Netd-Ndc (master)”.
Step 7. Choose “Send Netd Max Client Cmd”.
Step 8. You can set your wifi encryption and SSID here to whatever you’d like.
Step 9. Make sure either “WiFi-driver reload” or “WiFi-driver reload 2″ is checked on. If wifi tether fails for some reason you can change this to the one you didn’t use.
Step 10. Scroll down and make sure “MSS clamping” and “Routing fix” are both checked on.
Step 11. Turn on tethering by hitting the Wifi icon.
Step 12. You can check logs by hitting Menu button->Show Log. If you don’t see any errors you are good to go.
Step 13. Now, try connecting to your wifi tether using your computer or another wifi device. Once connected, it should show up under Access Control. (hit Menu then Access Control)
Step 14. Enjoy your wifi tether without paying carriers twice!
ENJOY!
It doesn't work.(for long) Im pretty sure either sprint has caught on to my usage or my local tower is acting weird, I noticed that my connection drops here and there when i browse on the phone even. Im thinking thats whats causing the tether to drop. It just happens more often with the tether than on the phone.
Its just so weird that only new connections stop, open connections will stay connected.
I ended up getting my local cable company back, they upgraded to a whopping 3.9 meg.. beats the hell out of the .9meg it was

[Q] Page Plus Data?

While back I successfully flashed this phone to Page Plus, along with a verizon PRL and it works like a charm talk and text but I get no data or MMS. What should I do to get data? Is it as simple as getting a verizon APN or do I need to do some wacky stuff?

That depends on how comfortable you are with QPST or DFS and whether you have a budget you are willing to spend to get the phone up and running. There is another thread running in this forum attempting to get 3g on Pageplus flashing an NV file, but there seems to be a number of issues that are still being worked out. Besides that, I know of two options for getting data:
1. Simplest method (and now the only one I ever use because, heck, it's freakin easy) - get Wireless Workshop. You can fully flash phones over to $10/phone and it does all the work for you. It gets mms up and running, does some kind of dmu calculation to allow you to run data at 3g speeds, and it's almost entirely automatic. Downside: you pay $10/flash and you have to buy credit in $50 chunks.
2. QPST 2.7/ DFS method (I was able to get mms and 1g data running) - I can't help you to find QPST, but a google search will get you there quickly enough or you can go with DFS, which you can download for free from their website.
It's been a while since I've flashed my LGOG (I think it was in February or March), so here is hopefully everything you need. Also, if you already know all this, my apologies. Some people seem to be having issues with getting the values to stick and if that's you, then I don't know what to tell you apart from going for Wireless Workshop. But your post sounded like you might not be in that camp, so here goes:
*You have to be on stock based rom (I usually use Lifeless or NextOG, just because those are already on my phone, but any should work just fine)
*Make sure phone is in DIAG mode - Dial ##DIAG#, then enable or yes or DIAG or whatever the option is
*Open QPST/DFS, plug in phone, and open the port in the program that shows your phone.
*In DFS you want to send the SPC, click on the PROGRAMMING tab, then edit the DATA and MOBILE IP tabs
- Enter [email protected] (#########@vzw3g.com) for the UID and NAI (technically I think the NAI should be [email protected] or something like that, but I've never found it to affect my ability to get 1g of data)
- Enter vzw for the password and shared secret values
* I don't remember which profile (0, 1, or 2) you need have as default. I think I just filled in all three and set 0 to default and it worked, but you may have to dink about for a bit if it doesn't work.
* The settings are similar in QPST, but with more tabs within tabs to fill in all the information.
That ought to get you data, and then you just need to change the mms settings.
*Dial ##DATA#, find the option for mms, click on it and choose to edit, enter SPC, change the value to http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms, set the port and proxy to nothing (this part was tricky for my phone to get it to change - I ended up switching it to 80, restarting the phone, and then changing it to nothing)
- the phone will restart and you'll be all set. If you have trouble sending or receiving mms, you can also search for wwmsgs.apk or pageplusmms.apk (though I prefer wwmsgs.apk because it looks like the AOSP messaging app)
Hopefully that helps, and hopefully I haven't forgotten anything essential. If I have, I'll try to help you get it sorted out.
+1 for wireless workshop. I flashed 2 OG's and it couldn't have been easier. I get true 3g speeds (2+Mbs), and everything else works.

I gave it a go with DFS, it tells me error code 89 cannot establish a data connection. then it keeps bootlooping back to the boot animation until i disable data
Edit: when i reconnect to dfs some settings have returned to their sprint settings. argh. I wish WW would just let me pay the 10 bucks for one flash.

I've been trying to rack my brain for what I did to make the settings stick, but I can't seem to remember. At one point I got that message as well, but I think between using QPST and DFS the settings eventually stayed. You could try changing some of the values by dialing ##DATA# and editing them there. I did that a few times on my wife's phone and it seemed to work ok (though the mms settings were quirky).
I have two friends coming over to Page Plus, so I'll be reactivating my Wireless Workshop account for them. I was planning to do the $50 and do $10 per flash, but it seems like there are a number of people here who would like to make the switch to Page Plus and get data. If I can figure out a way to allow others to chip in, we could all go for the unlimited license and get everyone flashed over with full 3g. The unlimited is good for 1 month and costs $75. I already have $20 of that coming my way from my two friends, so we would just need 5 or 6 more people who are interested and a way to make it happen (perhaps using teamviewer to flash them wirelessly?). I would feel hesitant about giving out my username and password, since my address and payment info are all on the account. Plus I think they limit it to one computer. But if I get it on mine, I could connect via Teamviewer to anyone interested. The whole process takes about 10 minutes.
What do you/anyone else think?
I have some time coming up this weekend, so that would be ideal.

Just thought of a way we could do the money. Google Wallet just setup an easy way to send money to someone's Wallet account through gmail. That could be an option. We would have to keep the amount I received under $55, since I'll be getting $20 from my friends and Teamviewer is only free if it's for private use, not for commercial use. I would want to keep this at fellow LGOG users helping each other out.

Unlocked G2 w/ Max WiFi Users 1 + Questions

TLDR: Unlocked LG G2 was on Sprint, now on VIVA in Kuwait, Max WiFi users when running hotspot is 1 - I want to increase it to more.
Long version:
Hello! I am a military service member deployed to Kuwait. I have a Sprint LG G2 which is rooted and running the latest UltraPop ROM. Before I left the US, my phone was activated on the Sprint network and when I would use my WiFi hotspot, I had the ability to connect up to 10 users or something. When I got to Kuwait, I had to have my phone SIM unlocked for International use to make it work with the SIM cards provided by the carrier here (it's called VIVA). My phone was not on the Sprint network when I needed to unlock so when I did the UICC unlock it did an OTA over WiFi and then I was able to use my phone on their carrier. This is all well and good.
The problem is, I want to connect my laptop, my tablet and a few other items to my hot spot - thus the appeal of the hot spot, right? LOL. Anyway, several advanced options like the radio channel, frequency, etc. have now disappeared and in addition, the most important one - the amount of users able to connect to the hotspot, went from allowing 10 to 1. I am not sure why, except maybe something to do with the OTA update when I did the UICC unlock.
I did some reading and found this article: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2718682
Quickly I tried it and restarted my phone. No change. Then I noticed there was another hack for phones that had been activated on the Sprint network, which as I explained above, believe applies to me. This article has a more complicated procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2675280
I am afraid to try this method and screw things up. I suppose I could boot in TWRP and do a NANDROID back up before I try it but I am wondering if anyone thinks it will hose the only working Internet I have right now in Kuwait.
Any help is appreciated. Also, if anyone knows how to get the WiFi hotspot to allow devices to connect while running a VPN at the same time please enlighten me!
Thanks!!!
Sincerely, Lost & Confused...
OK, so I am going to resurrect my own thread here. I spent some time on and off dealing with the 1 client max for the hot spot in my Sprint LG G2. Lots of frustration. Anyway, digging deeper based on a tip another friend of mine gave, I discovered something that I thought would have helped, but no cigar.
Anyway, a variable called max_num_sta in the file /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant/hostapd.conf allows the access point to have only one client. The hostapd application on Android performs almost identical to an average Linux distro, so I figured by modifying this variable I would be able to allow more than 1 client to connect to my hotspot. However, even when changing the file manually, as soon as the hot spot is enabled thru the stock interface, only 1 client is able to connect and looking at the file again shows the value of the variable has been reset.
Next step on the list, was to run the hostapd manually from an Android terminal (something like hostapd -e/data/misc/wifi/entropy.bin -BK /data/misc/wifi/hostapd.conf). The command works at the hot spot functions, but again somehow resets to 1 freaking client again!
I would really like to be able to use my G2 to connect more than one device at a time to my hot spot while I am stuck in Kuwait. It is my only source of Internet. Anyway. Is there a way to disable the stock Wi-Fi Hot Spot interface using Titanium Back-up? Remove the APK? Modify the system? Something? I'd really like to figure this out. Any info or suggestion appreciated...
