So now that Sprint is moving to the LTE standard, does this mean that WiMax will no longer be developed? I mean, i just signed a damn 2 year contract 3 months ago, and am paying an extra 10 bucks a month per smartphone for 4g service, which i was promised i would get in the future. The rep even told us that within a year WiMax coverage would encompass most of Sprints network.
Wimax will still be supported by Sprint. It's not like they can drop it entirely with an abundance of Wimax users on its network. I wouldn't expect widespread expansion of Wimax though since LTE is what's "in"

Was on the phone with *2 today and while waiting i slipped that question in. The guy said that wimax will be supported for the life of all current devices

Ya, they are dropping Wimax. But, you won't be using this phone when it happens.
On my Epic mobile phone.
The 10$ fee is not a 4g fee. Even non 4g smart-phones come with the extra 10$.

It was never, ever called a 4G fee. It's always been called a Premium Data fee from the launch. The confusion comes from it initially only being charged on 4G phones (however, Sprint was always VERY careful to position it as a Premium Data fee for phones that Sprint expected to consume more data and to protect them from the complaints of 4G not being available in all areas).

The rep lied to you about wimax expansion. They will continue to serve wimax until all wimax devices have reached their "life expectancy" but lte is the new 4g standard. Enjoy your wimax device and by the time your contract is due to renew, Sprint will hopefully have a decent lte coverage area.

I called the local sprint store today asking about spotty service in my area and asked about lte. He said there will probably be some sort of update for our phones so we will be on the lte network. Does this sound right?

WiMax will continued to be supported until the absolute earliest they will turn it off; the end of 2015.
It is still a good technology for many things, and I could see them using and maintaing the network beyond that.
you wont be on LTE but you will have faster data speeds on 3g though when the towers are upgraded
Actually they called it that because Dan Hesse, Sprint's CEO said at CES that there would not be a surcharge for 4g data service.

according to engadget, and ceo of spint, they will support wimax until 2015, and phase it out of their network as lte gets in place. by 2013 they will offer lte- advanced. which is ten times faster then the current lte.
this does not mean there will be more expansion of wimax.. wimax is just a pit stop.

No, it is used to pay clearwire for 4g and to pay for network vision (4g).
In other words it is a 4g fee.
hey everyone..what keeps you with sprint!? the unlimited data and any mobile is great, but the data speeds and lack of 4g or LTE are kind of annoying...so what keeps y'all with sprint?! I Love the aformentioned perks, but I think verizon 4g lte in my area may tempt me to switch
Well I created a new plan with sprint [was on parents' plan] and I could have went anywhere. I went with sprint cuz of the data prices, and the overall price wasn't bad. Not gona go to at&t and verizon and get raped with data. Also LTE coming to my area is supposed to be heavy, so we will see.
Its cheaper then the other carriers. I get full signal on sprint everywhere I go in my area. It actually has unlimited data

Whats keeping me on sprint right now is the future unlimited LTE.

Well, my parents pay for that. So I don't exactly worry, I only get to see 4G maybe once every 6 months, but my areas getting LTE.

There plan prices are much better than the others, but it is the unlimited data and minutes that are a plus for me.
There prices, when it comes to customer service they are the best. This only carrier I stayed longer then any other carrier.

I may be selling my AT&T One X and giving AT&T the ax. I just have a few questions. Which would be the better Nexus to go with? Sprint or the Google Play GN Unlocked on something like straight talk? I really wanna use Jelly Bean so which phone has the better development and better JB experience?
Can you use Straight Talk or a different MVNO on the Unlocked GN? I'm in the US btw. Upstate NY.

I can't speak for the sprint nexus but the Verizon one has pretty much everything the GSM one does. I have heard some things like mms can be finicky on the sprint version on ported roms though although they may have just been jellybean before the source came out. It all depends on what you want regarding carriers. The phones themselves are pretty much identical and porting roms takes only a matter of minutes for the most part.
The GSM gnex works on pretty much any GSM carrier worldwide including straight talk and t mobile.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
From what I have heard, the GSM variant is much more supported with updates and such.
You will be deprived of official OTAs from Google. As Samung and sprint make our updates. I actually plan on ditching sprint... selling my current nexus and getting the next nexus unlocked from Google I hope... and trying T-Mobile. Their starting price for a family plan is 130$ which right now I'm paying 230$ for sprint... and .20mbps of their poop 3G. Hoping to get better signal at least and save some money at the same time. Don't even use 1gb of data over a month so... 2GB isn't bad... and would take occasional throllting than unlimited poop.

From what it sounds like the op will not be running stock. The verizon version had a fully functional jellybean rom within an hour of the build leaking from Google io. I assume the sprint version had one as well. I would make this decision based on what carrier offers better service. The sprint one does have twice the storage though. Straight talk is a good option if your not a really heavy data user. I don't use that much data per month. Roughly around 500mb.

Just go GSM and prepaid if you're interested in keeping the prices the lowest. There's nothing wrong with the GSM model.
Look at the prepaid thread for specific questions and answers. You can use the GSM Nexus on any of the GSM carriers (MVNO or otherwise) in the US.

Can I use another 4G LTE provider on the Galaxy Note II from Sprint?
I have Boost Mobile and I had a Galaxy S2 with Clear.com 4G WiMax. I now can only get 3G, and as you ALL know the 3G speed has lowered quite a bit. (200~400k vs 700~900k 3 years ago)
Another alternative I guess would be to get a Hotspot, but who wants to carry around a phone AND a hotspot when you can have them both on the phone?
I believe you can use this device on any network that is actually using Sprint towers, like MetroPCS (?) or Boost?
There are threads somewhere for instructions on flashing this.
(i'm also talking out my ass, because I have only noticed these threads in passing, never actually researched this. But I bet if you Searched a bit, you'd find the info.)

Thanks for the info but that's not what I meant. I mean the 4G service, not the voice, talk, text and 3G. I have that already. (that's what the thread under this one does, help you program the Note 2 on Boost, I already did that part. I meant the 4G LTE, i.e. connecting it on Verizon's LTE or T-Mobile's (MetroPCS is now part of T-Mobile I believe?) Heck, even a Sprint LTE account if they allowed it by itself with no talk/text service would be nice.

I give facts and argument you insult sprint... well of course you are right. who has ever heard of the "can suck it" argument ever loosing. that's how we explained to Hitler and the Japanese emperor that he had to surrender in WW2 "Mr Hitler can suck it" -pres trueman, "since I can suck it I have ordered my forces to surrender and suggested to the Japanese to do the same"-hitler (translated to English)
if you can't give facts to support your claim you can go head and get an iPhone on a gsm network since you are using the same arguments apple uses to ensnare its sheep -i mean- customers
either that or you are an at&t rep or fanboy trying to weakarm customers away from sprint. why you aren't targeting your biggest competitor Verizon is beyond me but take that stuff to T-Mobile customers they'll eat that up like they eat their "unlimited" throttled data
one bad experience in one city with one small period of data speed downturn does not a bad carrier make
oh and mods don't blame chuko (or me) for starting arguments. arguments are healthy and help shape perception

As far as I am aware, Verizon will not activate an Epic 4G on their network. They'll use some excuse that it isn't in their system, and since it isn't as simple as swapping a SIM card, I'm afraid you're at their mercy.
YMMV, of course, but I wouldn't bank on it.
