My phone has had very bad battery life when wifi is on. And after reading online, and my own experience, I think the cause is Google Maps. Is there a way to automatically kill it after it stops, like some sort of task killer app?
Whenever I use my task killer, it shows google maps running, even after I killed it.
I don't even understand why google maps automatically runs, or why it needs to use any of my wifi...
Also, my phone is not rooted, nor will I be rooting it until the warranty expires.

First of all, I've said it a lot and I'll say it again:
just because an app appears in the running list, doesn't mean that it is actually using processing power, thus draining the battery.
So, I really doubt that if you haven't signed in to Latitude (which means location updates every so often), Google Maps is doing any harm to your battery.
You probably don't believe me anyway, so I'll just move on to my next answer:
NO, if you are not rooted, you can't remove Google Maps, it's a system app, part of the Google Services Framework, the backbone of Android OS.
Is there a way I can have an app automatically kill it as soon as it starts? And it seems that Google Maps is the only thing that could be possibly taking up my battery. Losing 4% an hour on standby is not normal.

If you were to use an app to kill it as soon as it starts, it would try again and again to restart and that's where you would definetely see the drain.
When you go to Settings->About Phone->Battery Use, do you actually see Google Maps in the stats? And if yes, how much percent of the battery does it say there that it takes?
And 4% in an hour could be due to many, many things.
Check out this thread to help you find out more about your issue.
Freeze it with titanium, unfreeze when you want to use it. That's what i do,.
as i know, maps service is only location by using gps,so go to location n security setting, turn off "use gps satellites",if its still running, use iridaki advice-ignore it,it cant eat your battery!!

Google maps is not in the battery usage, unless I open maps and use it.
The things that are using that battery are : display, cell standby, phone idle, wifi, android os, android system.
But if I turn wifi off, the battery drain problem goes away :S
I will download betterbatterystats and use it, will post on how it goes.

I have been using the GNEX for about 6 months and I never had any problems.
Since I updated to JB, the battery drain has been quite big. There is also some big lag sometimes, but I suspect that the lag can be tied to the market too.
I see that the market accounts for the battery drain now.
It should be noted that the market was not opened, no apps were updated and there were no notifications. So it must be running in the background.
I did not use the phone much today, read the news in the morning and made 1 phone call. So the drain is quite big for this using.
Has anybody had this problem and knows the solution?
P.S.
I haven't open the maps either.
You can force stop maps, maps can be started by any application that i has location services, Google search, twitter etc. Open play store under settings, uncheck all options.
I just had the same issue with Google Play Store. Plugged the N7 in to charge to get it to power up and the battery usage is showing the Play Store as "Keep awake" for 6h 46m, which essentially drained my battery overnight. I can't see any obvious reason it did this

I have exactly the same issue with my new LG Nexus 4 running JB 4.2 !!!
I removed it from charge this morning and after 5 hours in standby mode the battery was on 20%
ur best bet is to "don't keep activities" in the developer options
re: the maps draining, u'd have to turn off location services but it's needed for google now
^That kinda defeats the whole purpose of owning an Android device. I would at least start by uninstalling updates and opening the Play Store back up. Maybe it got stuck doing something it shouldn't have been. The Maps issue. Mine is always running. Never shows up in my battery stats. There are so many triggers that can cause it to run, so I've given up(There's always AutoStarts, though you need root for it) even trying since it isn't affecting my overall battery life. I leave GPS on, but turn off Google Location Services unless I need it.

I found out that it happens only after it automatically updates my apps.
I disabled the auto update apps from play store and seems to be fine now....
[UPDATE - 16-12-2012]
Today I checked manually for updates, Installed 26 of them and the battery drained again after couple of hours.
For some reason, it does not stop the application and it is constantly using the CPU thus draining the battery. My phone is very hot (temperature) at the moment and I have not used it for almost 2 hours and it was not on charge !!!
This is ridiculous.....
I don't usually use maps but I've been noticing that the maps app use more than 5% of the battery everyday... It uses as much battery as the browser, which I use quite often..
What's going on? I have only used the maps apps twice to test it. My GPS is off and so is network location.
My phone is stock rooted.
Help?

It's the newer location tracking from Google now. Go into your options on maps or Google now and check there. I don't have N2 yet, so don't know what the options look like, but it should have options for location services and the like.

Maps will always run in memory and will drain battery. You can check that from better battery stats as well. It keps the phone awake. Better to freeze the maps

You have to install betterbatterystats, it will let you know why maps have used the battery. If maps are showing up in the alarms for no reason, you need to throw it away
I hope you're not logged in Latitude.
UPDATE: Wanted to add from personal experience that these tricks all work on 4.4 KitKat ROMs. This information isn't stale
This guide should work for any Android phone running any ROM. (Though you do have to be rooted for most of these options. Nothing is THAT simple!)
The goal is to reduce your battery drain when your phone is idle. Nothing in this guide will improve your battery life when the phone is in use. But it will keep the battery from draining quickly (actually it will nearly keep it from draining at all) when the screen it off and the phone is not in use. And the battery savings can be extreme! As I write this guide my phone it has been 4 days, 15 hours, and 9 minutes since I last unplugged my Galaxy S4. I have 33% battery life remaining. You can have this too!
These fixes are not your typical "Lower screen brightness and delete carreir bloatware and disable auto syncing" tips. (Though all that stuff is still a good idea)
You can try all of these techniques or just some of them. Some of them will break features of your phone and might not be good options for you. Only you can decide if these fixes are right for you.
Special thanks for Mike216 and Penko956 for the endless research they did Greenifying, freezing, and disabling they did on just about every system and app on thier phone to see what all could be disabled. And to Torbitege who initially helped figure all this out with me for the HTC Sensation.
First off, what's using your battery?
If you're not already familiar with Better Battery Stats, fix that about yourself. Download it. Use it. Love it.
This app will run in the background constantly monitoring what's using your system resources 24 hours a day. It will tell you what apps are causing wakelocks, which are waking the device, etc etc etc.
The app won't do anything to help your battery life. But it will give you the information you need to adjust problematic apps.
Wakelocks and Battery Drain caused by Google Services
The battery saving impact is major.
This is my personal favorite battery saving technique. But it's not right for everyone, so read thoroughly.
Basically Google thinks your phone belongs to Google. Google Services runs A LOT even when you're not using the phone. This causes a ton of wakelocks and wake ups that use battery. I hate that. So I stopped it with a simple mod to the Google Services Framework.
Here's how....
This is a good old fashioned dirty fix, as it breaks some things. Most push notifications WILL NOT WORK AFTER DOING THIS!!!!! So this is not for everyone!!!! You've been warned. Please don't complain later in the thread that you aren't getting new mail or Twitter or whatever notifications after doing this. You're being told up front they will probably not work.
GTalk and GoogleNow (and maybe a few other things) will not work after doing this. Push notifications for any Google apps will also not work. They are casualties of the dirty fix. But if you're like me and never use GTalk or GNow this will help. Some other Google services might not work after this either. But if you're like me and the only Google service you use is the Play Store app, this will not affect you adversely. (Gmail and Google Maps run independantly of the Google Services framework and are not affected at all by this.)
Use this version of the fix for older Google Service Framework installs. You will know if you have a newer version if doing this install doesnt' prevent your wifi and data icons from turning blue (or whatever color your theme uses). If they turn blue, use the newer version below....
You need to download System Tuner from Google Play. The app will tell you to get Android Tuner instead. Don't do it. It doesn't have what you need. The icon is a blue suitcase with tools on it. Thats' the one you want.
First I froze GTalk and Gnow (Google Search). And no, you can't just freeze those two apps without touching the GSF. The GSF will still create wakelocks when trying to activate them even if they are not there. So you have to modify the GSF as well.
Go to System Tuner and select "Start Ups".
Then pick the Google Services Framework from the list and open it. You shoudl see a list of services.
Uncheck the things on the list below. (Basicall anything with GTalk or Checkin in the title)
gtalkservice.diagnostits.gtalkdiagnostics
gtalkservice.connection autherrordialog
talk.talkprovider
checkin.checinservices$reciever
checkin.checkinservices$triggerreciever
checkin.eventlogservices$receiver
gtalkservice.diagnostics.gtalkdiagnosticsbroadcast reciever
gtalkservice.serviceautostarter
gtalkservices.datamessagereciever
gtalkservice.sendxmppreciever
gtalkservices.packageinstalledreciever
gtalkservice.xmppendpointreciever
checkin.evenlogservice
gtalkservice.service.stalkservice
gtalkservice.pushmessagingregistar
You can freeze the GSF entirely with 1 easy step and that will also kill the wakelocks. But the Play Store becomes another casualty if you do that. Disabling the events above will stop the Google Services wakelocks dead in their tracks, and allow the Play Store to continue working. If you want to go that route you can do it but you'd have to unfreeze the GSF everytime you wanted to update an app.
Newer version if you have updated Google Service Framework.
Freeze the Google Services Framework entirely.
Profit.
Note: I haven't personally tried this and can't attest to it's viability to drawbacks. It was suggested by other members in this thread and confirmed to be working by several other people. Your miliage may vary.
One little quirk with both of the above versions is that when you turn on wifi or mobile data, the signal bars don't turn colors. They stay gray because you aren't connecting to the google servers anymore. (They normally change color to indicate that you are connected to the Google servers). After 1 day I stopped noticing they didn't change colors. Now it looks weird to me when I see them colored.
I highly recommend making a Nandroid backup before trying any of this. Once you go that, go nuts! You can't hurt too much when messing with the GSF because it will just shut down google elements. Worst case, you can always just reactivate everything, reboot, and it'll all work like it did before you messed with it. But if you accidentally disable Android System instead of Google Services, you will probably kill your ROM. So back a backup first.
And severely worst case, if you totally louse up your ROM, just restore the Nandroid and it'll all be back to normal in a flash. (Get it? In a 'flash'...haha I crack myself up)
The Greenify App Sollution
The battery saving impact is moderate.
This is one that you're just silly not to be doing.
Get the Greenify App from The Play Store
There is a free version. But its freakin' awesome so buy the donate version. It's $3 and the developer has more than earned it for the way he's making your phone awesome. (The donate version also includes some special experimental features. Read all about it. Do NOT just get the donate version. You need the free version too.)
This app basically lets your freeze any user app when you're not actively using it. And unfreeze it automatically when you want to open it again.
So if you have an app that likes to wake your device and run itself when you're not using the phone, you can just Greenify it and it will be prevented from using any system resources when you're not actively using the app.
You don't want to Greenify everything. Some apps need to run 24/7 like your messaing app, your phone app, etc. If you Greenify those you won't get messages or calls. The app is incredibly simple to us. You just select the app that's causing trouble and tell Greenify to 'go'. And it does the rest. It's just as easy to un-greenify an app if you greenify something you shouldn't have.
Not every app on your phone needs to be Greenified. Most apps behave themselves. Only do this to the ones that are showing as causing wakes or alarms or wakelocks in a battery monitor like Better Battery Stats.
Two that I will suggest for everyone to start with are Google Maps and T Mobile's My Account app. Both of these love to run when the phone is alseep.
If for whatever reason Greenify those apps hinders the way you use your phone, just ungreenify them! Simple as that.
Google Play Services and You
The battery saving impact is noticable.
Google Play Services wakes the phone a lot. It also does a lot. Read more about what all Google Play Services does here.
You have two options for this one. The first option is the nuclear option. Freeze Google Play Services outright. It will never bother you, but it might break some usefulness of other google apps.
The second option, thanks to XDA Member Karpfenhai , is to disable only certain aspects of the Google Play Services. This one uses the same technique mentioned above in the Google Services Framework Section, just different services to disable. (Thanks to Perseus71 for making me aware of this one and asking that it be included!) THIS HAS BEEN RECENTLY UPDATED
NEW PROBLEM AS OF MARCH 2015
The battery saving potential is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED!
Since Google updated Play Services all hell has broken loose on custom roms. You get a persistent and unkillable wakelock for SystemUpdateManager.
The battery drain is horrendous. Your phone is awake and active 100% of the time.
This affects GPS version 7.0.97
I fixed this by going to the permissions manager (built into many aosp roms. If not available in your rom, consult yoir rom thread for ways to alter permissions) and disabling the permission in Google Play Services for "wake" and "keep awake".
Note: Some phones only show "keep awake". Just do that one if that is the case.
The problem is that on custom roms no ota is available. But Google tries to get it anyway. When it fails it doesn't shut down. It just keeps trying.
If the permissions method doesn't work, try this...

I
Just so you don't think I'm kidding around when I say you can severely increase your battery drain when idle, take a look at tehse screen shots from my Galaxy S4.
My specific set up is running CyanogenMod 10.1 nightlies with ChronicKernal. I haven't been using my phone much over the past 4 days. I have a total of 2 hours and 34 minutes screen on time and 40 minutes of phone calls during that period. So this is admittedly very light usage. But that's perfect to show you that these techniques really work to minimize battery drain when the phone is idle. And I promise you that your results will vary based on your ROM and Kernel.
This won't make the battery last longer during use. The screen will still burn a lot of battery and the cell radio does too. But if you want to make sure your phone will be charged when you need it without you having to carry a charger with you everywhere you go, these are the mods for you.
As you can see from these screen shots I am at 4 days, 16 hours, 50 minutes since unplugging. I have 31% battery left. (That's what the 31 in the upper left corner is. Thats' from an app called Big Battery Notifier. Its free on Play.)
The other screenshot is from Better Battery Stats showing my Alarms screen. Alarms are loosely the same as wakes. Everytime an app wakes the device (not neccessarily turning the screen on) it will record an alarm. If you look at your BBS alarms screen without these modifications I bet you see a lot more alarms than you see here, and keep in mind that mine screen show is showing 4 and a half days worth. Each one of those represents an app or service waking the device and using battery.
If the written instructions somehow baffle you, here's a video of the whole thing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUBpOl77Tm4
This will show you step by step how to do all of this.
Thanks to XDA Member Chaitanyapatel8880 for his work in putting this video together
Just a note. If you convert Google Play Services to a User App (TB), you can then Greenify (free ver.) it. This works very well and does not affect other functions that may rely on that app.
I also Greenify Maps and Google Search. Two more heavy drainers. Convert to User App first.
*Note: You must use Greenify v1.82 to Hibernate Google Play Services! Search this thread for links to it.
Fwiw, my sleep drainage is 0.3 - 0.4%hr, with wifi on 24/7.
I get either 7-8 days standby, or so far, 5.5 days with 3.5 hours screen time, or likely 6-7hrs screen time single day. Screen shots are in my posts.
I would argue too that these settings/tweaks do indeed increase your battery time, since while sleeping, the battery is draining at a much lower rate, therefore keeping more juice for live time use.
Although you and I don't use all of the same "tweaking" programs, we do seem to be on the same mission. Better battery life! :good:

you have an option in settings to disable location
since you are rooted, look for "wakelock detector" and "disable service" in play store,
'wakelock detector' will tell you what apps or services are causing it, and then u can disable that particular service using the 'disable service' app

I discovered something else.
I reinstalled my Phone again with Android 4.4.2. I installed all my apps. Using the Google Now Launcher.
Batterie consumptions seems normal. I see wake locks but acceptable.
But when driving to home from work I used Avertinoo (A radar notifying application that uses GPS). At home I closed the application. But suddenly I saw that the phone stays awake all the time. And Google Service is responsible for 86% of battery consumption.
Only solution, restart of the phone.
I did several test with this application. A short usage of the application does not seem to trigger the problem.
I did a test with Navigon (Navigation software) and I got the same problem.
So I think any application using the GPS for to long, will cause a problem with the Google service (endless loop due to time out ?).

Instead of disabling location, setting the location mode to "device only" was enough for me.

I discovered something else.
I reinstalled my Phone again with Android 4.4.2. I installed all my apps. Using the Google Now Launcher.
Batterie consumptions seems normal. I see wake locks but acceptable.

it's actually a wakelock, whenever an app requires the phone to be awake(say use gps) it sets a wakelock until some condition is satisfied(as u said endless loop), point is its not due to time out but some weird issue that is coming up with the google apps of our particular device....that's why a restart solves it or at times it may not occur for hours of usage of an app and next time it may occur after a minute.
the disabling of services or location is a temporary solution right now.
I tried to clean up all google apps in system and install the latest gapps and odex them.....until now i havent seen any battery issues(in fact usage is not even visible).....i'll report the findings after a fair usage so i can be sure if it does fix the issue.
I uninstalled Google Search from system and installed from the Playstore, then disabled location reporting and my battery seems to go to normal draining

you don't have to uninstall or install anything
just go to sittings\ security and disable Google reporting
that's all
a little update is coming
On PTCRB there is a new Version certified .233
Maybe this will fix the battery draining.

I was having this draining problem (happened out of nowhere, a full week after installing the 4.4.2 update).
Uninstalling Google Search and reinstalling it through the Play Store didn't worked (kept having Google Services draining more than 80%).
Setting Location mode to GPS-only didn't worked neither. Turning location off worked, but disabled my location-based apps, has expected.
What did worked for me was going to Setting -> Location-> Location Services (Google Location Report) and disabling both Location Report and Location History.
Now Google Services DOES NOT DRAIN more than 2% of my battery. CPU usage is always low (using CPU Spy Reborn, the 1512 MHz frequency step is pretty much around 2 - 3% of the time, as is the 1026 MHz frequency step - the remaining frequency steps are all at 0 - 1%, with 384 MHz (the lowest step) at 52% and Deep Sleep at 34% of the time).
All this with Location active on high-precision mode. Roughly 5h10min of usage (LTE always on), with PowerAmp playing for more than 4h straight, around 55min screen on and 15min or so of gaming (Zombie Gunship), and the battery is still at 72%.
With 4.3, with the same level of usage (moderate to heavy, I guess) the battery would absolutely be on the 60-65% range.
In other words, disabling both Location Report and Location History worked for me, with zero downsides with regards to location based apps (Google Maps, Waze and GPS Essentials all work perfectly).
Hope this helps. Best regards.
I have note 10+ SM-N95F. Since I installed the last software update released June 1, my battery is discharging quicker. I saw there is an app called mlp that increase its battery consumption after the update.
Anybody know what this app is for?

Depending on when you installed the update it may take a short bit for things to stabilize. Until they do things like this could happen.
MLP is the com.samsung.mlp app and is made by Samsung. It functions as a Mobile Location Protcol, serving as an intermediary between a location access server and a location based application.
I doubt that this is the cause of your battery drain issues, as a location based app on your phone has to trigger the MLP process. I would try to figure out what app your using is requiring access to your location the most and either disable it or allow the phone to put it to sleep. This way when your not using it the app won't keep triggering the MLP.

The forum does not let me to upload images but before the update, my battery usage says that mlp has consumed 1.1% of battery from 100% to ~15%. But now from 100% to 40% of battery, mlp has consumed 14.7%. There is no new app after I updated the software. I'll try to find out which app is requiring access to my location and triggering the MLP.

Excluding what the battery usage app is saying, what is your usable time compared to what it was before the update? Have you installed anything shortly before the update or after the update? Are you using the phone more then you were before and what is it your doing with the phone... Are you listening to music more often, using social media apps more often, games like pokemon go or other gps enabled games or anything that uses Geofencing or location awareness?
Of all the location enabled apps on my phone 57.9% of my battery was used since last charge. Of which the most use was by Google Play Services, followed by Messaging, Android System, Total Launcher and then Maps.

Before the update I used to get ~7 hours of screen. Now I'm just getting arround 4 hours. I'm using my phone as I normally used to (social media, email, news, maps, etc). I don't play games in my phone. I have not installed anything last month. I installed the software update 3 days ago. I could show you the battery usage app but the forum doesn't let me to add links or attach images.
I normally leave the phone connected in the night and disconnect in the morning. The phone could last all day without connecting to the charger.
Right now, my phone is in 15% and the app is saying that mlp has consumed 22.6%. Just 3h 45m screen on time.

Ok, here is a link where you'll find 2 captures. One shows the battery usage before the update, and the other shows the battery usage after the update.
Note: I do not use my phone while is charging.
You could try clearing the cache on the MLP app (if possible), clearing the cache via recovery menu, seeing if an update was released on galaxy store or factory data resetting the phone.
About the only things I can think of that would be of help. I know it's not much, but it's a starting point.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have forced stop the mlp app in App info (I don't know why I didn't think about this before). When I get there I discovered that the app that was triggering MLP is Gallery stories. Is a samsung app, I do not use that app and I don't know what it is so I disabled it. After that, MLP is no longer consuming my battery.
That's good to hear... Galaxy Stories was always present on the phone and is tied into the gallery app. You may have enabled it (or it was already enabled), but you can turn off stories by going to gallery settings and toggling off the two options for it.
