3G radio on deepsleep? Possible? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It is possible to put our 3g radio on deepsleep like our processor without losing connection? Think about an awesone battery life with that OMFG

A CPU in deep sleep does not calculate.
A 3G radio in deep sleep does not _____________.
Fill in the blank and find the problem. (1 point)

uhh no. Cel networks needs to poll the device to know which cel its on.
Try sleep settings on a ROM like AOKP. I dont find it worth it as it takes 20 seconds to re-establish any data connection from '2G only when sleeping' mode.

To turn off, or not to turn off

I am using android 2.3.7 (inc deck gingerbread).
Ok, I just read that the GPS check box (in the setting menu, or quick settings or whatever) does not actually turn the GPS antenna on and off, it only gives permission to the apps (gps-using-apps) whether they can turn the antenna on and off. Therefore, changing the GPS checkbox does not really save any battery. Simply by turning off gps-using-apps the antenna gets shut down, and then the icon disappears. The checkbox is simply there in case I don't want the app to have the ability to turn it on, as needed.
I just was hoping to get confirmation that this is true, yes?
Ok so that leads me to wonder about the Wifi and and Mobile Data check boxes (or toggles, whatever). When my phone is connected to Wifi and the 3G icon disappears, does that mean my phone just automatically turned off the 3G antenna?
I just upgraded to the Pro version of that fabulous little app Automateit... and just wonder if it is pointless to set up a rule to turn off 3G when it is connected to Wifi.
Yep. I would keep GPS ticked on because it does not actually go on unless you have an app (like navigation) open.
- Other programs may use GPS for a few seconds just to read your location, then they turn it off (such as weather programs) - this type of GPS usage really doesn't affect battery.
When you turn WiFi on it does turns off mobile data (3G) and you only have 1x.
GPS is only used when asked by an app or maybe the browser. Wifi on the other hand is always scanning. I recommend turning it off if you don't need it.

Thanks guys.
I have my wifi scan interval set to scan every 5 minutes. Hopefully that won't waste too much juice. he he
And if that wasn't stingy enough... with Automateit, my GPS, wifi and 3g get deactivated when the screen is off (all activate when screen is on). My battery life is pretty good, even overclocked . When I plugged in, going to bed the other night, I had 85% of my battery remaining (14 hours unplugged).
I should probably stop worrying about battery life.

Yeah you really shouldn't have to be worrying about battery life, it's something that use to drive me insane so I just bought a 2150mah battery and haven't looked back since.

[Q] whats best network setting

I am no the At&t network, I have installed a rom that lets you choose your singnal type. what is the best signal to use for low power consumption but isnt too slow?

For less power consumption, choose one that avoids LTE, especially if you don't have LTE signal in your area. I use GSM/WCDMA. I get HSPA+ speeds all day long.
If you REALLY want to save power, choose the "2G Only" option... and be prepared to switch it back when you realize how slow it is!
Is there a way to disable cell standby when out of service or at least make it not cheeck so often, my house has spots without signal so standby is ussaly 10% of battery usage.

standby is important and cannot be disabled
you can disable your data connection when your in a poor zone manually, just get a widget like power toggles and its a one click button on your homescreen to toggle data on/off

WIFI won't sleep it's always on!

I have just got a note 2 LTE from Vodafone and the wifi seems to be constantly connected all the time if i'm in range of a network. I have checked all the standard settings wifi never on with screen off, *#0011# wifi deep sleep on etc and still my battery info was a solid blue line under wifi.
Does anyone else have this problem? or any suggestions?
I am starting to think it's the Vodafone Bloatware thats installed that maybe keeping the wifi one?
You mean to say that the wifi is always on even if you are not in a range of network?
That's normal behaviour.
this is XXXDDDAAA
Hi
This is normal for both wifi and bluetooth if you have them activated. Doesn't suck much battery though as I'm at 1% when in deep sleep with both running.

[Q] ICS Battery Drain

Hi All:
I am experiencing tons of wakeups by com.android.phone regardless of 3G or LTE which drains my battery 6%+ per hour. However, if I have wifi, the drain drops to minimal. I turned off Fast Dormancy already, Any suggestion or fix?
Regards,
Frank

Which stock ICS are you running? Do you have wind kernel installed? Download and run better battery stats to see what wake locks you have. In regards to Fast Dormancy disabling it will either give you better or worse battery life. What is it? Its a tech used by the phone company to save battery power by putting the phone's radio in a low power state yet never relinquishing the data connection, so when you wake up your phone it doesn't have to spend the 3-5 sec reestablishing the data connection. The phone's software works hand in hand with this, however if your phone co in your area doesn't support it the phone's software will never let it sleep, therefore disabling fast dormancy will improve battery life. However if you have it disabled and your area supports it your data connection will never be released and therefore your phone's radio will never be shut off using battery. On top of that this is only a function of an HSPA/3G coverage area. With 2g (edge) or LTE its meaningless. Two more suggestions:
1. Power off the phone and remove the battery for 30 sec - 1 min. Then reassemble and power back on. For some reason this will fix the deep sleep suspend wake lock.
2. If you are rooted and have cwm installed, boot your phone into recovery. Create a backup. Reformat the system and data partitions. Reinstall your ROM, then go to restore/backup and select advanced restore. Select data then the backup just done. After complete reboot.
Good luck.

Thanks for the response. From BBS, the main wakelock is alarm com.android.phone, over 700 in an hour. I am using Vodafone V20c with Wind 3.4. Will try the battery removal and reformat trick.

Unfortunately No. Battery still drains 7%+ per hour on mobile network. On wifi, it's 1%. I have turn on Fast Dormancy just for the sake of it. Maybe need to move to CM 10.1. However, I play games on the phone sometimes and enjoy the snappy response of ICS.
I've been having problems with battery drain, from 6-7% an hour to more than 15% with the latest CM RC.
Changed over to Pac Rom, seems to be a lot better for battery power so far but a bit laggy.

A couple more things to try:
Wind kernel 3.6
Disable syncing.
Make sure you are not using LG supplied weather app widget bad power hog.
If disabling Sync works but you still need to get things like email notifications try using DS battery saver from the play store.

Using LiquidNitro v2.0 (battery needs recalibrating, see the blip at the top)

I will try Wind 3.6 and had tried Juice Defender and DS Battery Saver, but with 4G, the phone cannot go into deep sleep. It keeps searching for network, hence the wakelocks. I doubt Wind 3.6 can resolve the issue. Anyway I can use a different com.android.phone?

Try this:
Settings
Wireless & Network: Select MORE
Select MOBILE NETWORK
Select NETWORK MODE
Select GSM/WCDMA Auto
This will turn LTE off and should fix you issue, in most instances HSPA+ (4G on AT&T) download speeds are just as fast as LTE without the power issues.

I am having screen frozen issues with Wind 3.6, so have to revert back to 3.4 The disabling of LTE does not help the com.android.phone wakelocks. To summarize, my P936 cannot go into deep sleep while on Mobile Data regardless of LTE or 3G. I turned off sync and wechat app, but leave gmail and whatsapp in the background. Any more suggestion?

In the past I had issues with the whatsapp creating wake locks. Now this goes back to last year but I stopped using that app because of those issues. Try freezing it and reboot. Also when is the last time you calibrated your battery? Just in case you don't know: charge to 100%, while still plugged in reboot into recovery and wipe battery stats, then reboot your phone and unplug. Keep your phone off the charger till the battery goes dead and the phone powers down on its own. Then charge to 100% with the phone off. Also I think I asked this before which version of v20 are you running?

Will try recalibrate the battery. I am on V20c Vodafone.

Does wifi drain battery when moving about?

At home using wifi. When at work or on the road, LG G4 uses LTE but wifi setting remains on. Question, does this reduce battery life? In other words, does the phone keep looking for wifi networks and drain the battery in the process? If so, should I find an app that turns wifi off automatically whenever leaving home?

I would asume yes it uses power always trying to find a open hotspot even if data is on. If u leave wifi on its on all the time. Prob in a lower power state just searching for open spot or known wifi . instead of downloading or streaming which bring it to full power.
I am going to try an app called wi-fi matic for the next few weeks. It allows turning off wifi radio when away from home. Let's see if it makes any difference with battery life.
