Unsure really why, but I tried the tool kit.
all i want is a simple root, I don't see why it's so hard after all this is a nexus.
Should I try the windows version of the other root app that's out?
I just want root access, nothing more.
This was much more simple on my nexus s

Also I'm only on 4.0.2, should I be on 4.0.3?

U have to unlock the bootloader first. Not sure if u did that yet or not.

Also I don't see why I Have to loose all data just for root.

Its for security reasons... not so much for root, but for unlocking the bootloader. To be fair, almost every guide for the Galaxy nexus warned people to root on day one to avoid just this issue. That said, you may be able to follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402347
to create a full backup you can restore post unlock.

It just happens as a part of unlocking the bootloader. If you really want to save your data you can back it up manually or using the adb backup method. then restore it after rooting.

The problem with that is I already have my phone unlocked. I just didn't get a chance to root it. I don't want to go through unlocking it again and having it erase my phone. I just want to be able to root it. That's all.
I may add that my nexus is the unlocked GSM UK version.
Rooting without deleting everything would be better.
Thanx

Carrier unlocked and bootloader unlocked are different.
You need to unlock the bootloader (which wipes the phone) in order to root it...

I'd recommend starting those backups Protip: if you use dropbox sync in Titanium Backup Pro, you can actually back up your user apps on your old phone (provided you have wifi or your old phone is still active) and restore them on your Gnex. Make sure you do this ONLY for user apps, though.

Will there ever be a way to root without a PC, I do not own a PC.. But would really like to root and install a ROM etc?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It's probably not recommended if it is. A PC in invaluable when it comes to modding your phone for many reasons.
If you're ever in Detroit you can use my computer.

I'm guessing you don't have a computer at all, or do you mean you have a Mac?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
You might want to try and find an internet cafe where they rent their PCs by the hour. It is not the best choice but if buying a PC is not an option...
Personally I wouldn't because if something goes wrong later...you'll have no way to fix it.
i dont think its possible on the fact that the bootloader is locked by default, if this wasnt true all u needed was an app that roots ics.. so at the very least u need a computer to do
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
either computers at a college or even do it in an apple store, they normally dont give a load of crap what ur doing...

I'm gonna say this is a good idea. I have a Mac, and assuming you already have the files you could unlock the boot loader, root, and flash cwm recovery in a matter of minutes

You do not need to unlock your bootloader to root a GN running 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, but at this point so far, you do indeed need a computer to root.

Anyone know if any place has an update on how to root the nexus on Verizon with the latest 4.0.4 update. Everywhere I check they are still using 4.0.2.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
It's the same method.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I tried it, I even used the option to do the 4.0.4. But when I was trying the do the fast reboot part, it wouldn't give me the right options.do you have a video I can follow, this is my first time rooting my phone.
Its the exact same method. Unlike most devices, on a Nexus phone, there's no exploit required to root the device. If your bootloader is unlocked then you should have no problem using the exact same steps as 4.0.2.
Unless you're trying to root via exploit w/ a locked bootloader, which the ability to do so has been removed in 4.0.4.
I'm phone was just updated and it was locked when it was updated, dies that matter?

Taking an OTA update doesn't lock your bootloader... maybe you misspoke.
In order to root, you need to unlock the bootloader. The only reason why some people were able to root 4.0.2 without unlocking the bootloader was there was a slight exploit that allowed it. As I said, that exploit is not there in 4.0.4.
Just unlock the bootloader. Takes about 5 seconds as part of the root process. It will wipe your phone.
Ok thanks so much for the quick responses. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to this stuff, trying to learn. Thanks again

Hey guys,
I want to know if theres a way to get temporary root on the Nexus 7, without going the whole hog and actually rooting the device. Ive done it before on an s3 but I just cant seem to find a way on the Nexus 7.
Id like to be able to run some root apps like Titanium backup, before I actually root the device and are forced to wipe everything!
Cheers.
Only unlocking the boot loader wipes anything. Nothing to do with root. So you want a temporary root with a locked boot loader?

Exactly right, so is it possible to get root without unlocking the boot loader?
Sorry, I can't give you an answer. I was just trying to understand the question.

That's the "problem" with Nexus devices, unlocking the bootloader is so easy that no one searches for other ways to root. You can check the general Android board, or boards for similar devices, and see if one of the root methods there works on the Nexus.
Yeah im starting to think your right. Cant seem to find any info anywhere on temp root.
Might just have to wipe it and root properly...
This phone is on latest version 4.4.2 kit kat.
I've seen the root videos on YouTube and haven't seen any of them unlock the bootloader. Is that not necessary?
Secondly if I mess up in the root process and soft brick it, what software can I use to restore back to normal. Is there one made by LG? Like apples "iTunes" and Samsung "Odin"
I'm wanting to root to unlock phone to use with tmobile.

Use ioroot25 for root.
Use auto-rec for TWRP. Then follow unlock methods to use gsm carriers. Just know you will only get hspa. As the phone has different radios

OK thanks. Auto rec is to get it out of a bricked state? Yes I am aware of no lte.
Also is this a factory unlock? Will I lose it if I need to do a restore to stock rom unrooted?

Auto-rec will install TWRP recovery. Unlock boot loader and give kernel that works with it.
With recovery you can backup and restore if something goes wrong.
