I've put together a simple fix for the GPS not working after the phone goes to sleep in EL* based ROMs. Just flash the attached ZIP in CWM and it will replace the following files with the ones from EK02:
/system/bin/gpsd
/system/lib/hw/gps.s5pc210.so
So far, this seems to fix the issue based on testing by myself and others. Network Location seems to be borked as well, but there is a separate fix for that in this thread from odub303.
UNFORTUNATELY, THIS WILL NOT MAKE YOUR GPS WORK BETTER OR LOCK FASTER.
If you had issues with your GPS in EK02 as well, this won't fix it. This is just to fix GPS dying when the phone goes to sleep. (Example: you go to work and Google Maps still shows you at home and GPS Status/Test shows no satellites available.)
Sorry for all the red but if there's one thing I've learned around here, it's that people don't like to read.
I'll be the first guinea pig...I have been having problems since I have jumped back and forth between AOSP and TW roms.
thanx op, shame people dl fix 31 times and you get 2 "thanx"
I've been having gps problems too, jumping from miui back to tw
I'm on a EL29 rom, but EK02 modem, will this fix work for me, or is it only for EL29 modem?
I think I jumped the gun saying it worked in the blazer thread, I still have to force close maps when I go from home to work. And my beautiful widgets widget doesn't update unless I reboot. Is this just with the EL ROMS? I will say with this fix it does seem better but I don't think it is completely fixed. But thx op for working on this.
op if i may post a fix for getting fast gps sat locks i use this and get instant locks on any rom/kernel/modem, hope it helps someone.

It should, this is a ROM issue and not a modem issue. It may not fix the problem you're having but it shouldn't hurt to try either!

Yeah, just EL ROMs. The Beautiful Widgets issue is because of Network Location. You might want to also try the fix for that, there's a link in the OP. I could also throw together a ZIP with both fixes in it pretty easily.

Yeah, I used EL29 in the name since that's the official OTA but it'll work on any EL ROM. Technically you can install it on EG30 and EK02 also but there's really no reason to

no man...I tried pretty much everything but nothing is working. The best I can get is a lock after a couple minutes but I have to use GPS status before hand and on a test run the GPS wouldn't keep IP with my driving. I'm really aggravated. I tried clean installs and nandroiding back to previous working flashes but still not workimg

I'd be curious to know what kernel as well. You try eri n apns for service? Wifi might be the same fix we've used for 2.3.5+ issues in the past as well since our kernel is technically built for 2.3.4.

hey barnacles,
if you grab the 'official' rom from miui.com or even the int'l sgs2 miui port from xda, all you need to do is swap the zimage with one of the epic 4g touch's (like LoStKernel) and it will boot up and function (maybe what the OP of this thread did, didn't download to see). Data and wifi were no go. If I remember, the cameras were working though unlike what this OP says. I've been working on this here and there but I definitely dont have as much free time as I'd like as I'm getting ready to move to the other side of the earth.
I'll be more than happy to answer questions and/or help development going as soon as I can put some time aside to work on this.

I'm not a fan of the MIUI ROM(its to iPhone-ish IMHO) but I still wanted to say thank you for this post. Although I know it wasn't its purpose, it did point me to the SkyRocket's Development, and Themes & Apps Section, and man do they have some goodies over there, which I never would've found had it not been for this post, so thanks again!
so you essentially made small tweaks and got aosp based rom from sgs2 int to boot? if so, nice. I wonder if this works with CM7 as well.
Omggggg we need to get this rolling. I thought someone was already working on a port for MIUI? What is this for? Excited nonetheless lol.

Everything worked fine, granted there was some att crap in wifi settings that is useless to us, but at least we know we can use their stuff too. I also flashed jugs kernel with the rom as Im sure the kernel is different, but maybe not. Anyway, just wanted to let you know. Oh, they just got an ota to 2.3.6 yesterday, ill post the system dump here in a few. Hopefully the devs will move to that base.
*I thought I'd throw a zip similar to what they have together. I think this zip will do the trick. Give it a shot and let me know if auto rotate is still borked. I dont think it will be but I have CM7 setup and working audio so I dont want to ruin that Let me know and Ill fix issues if there is any.

It does have a an issue with our accelerometer it seems though.

Wrong section. Your instructing people to flash an Epic Touch tar on the OG Epic. People who don't read before doing (which are common here) are going to brick their phones. Plus as far as I know I haven't heard many complaining about gps not working on cm9 for "our" device.

Hey guys and gals-
Just thought I'd share with you something I'm really excited about. I've been flashing pretty much everything that has come out over recent weeks, and even months. I just was on CM9 build 3.1, which was incredible, but unfinished. I thought it could be my daily, but it started to go into airplane mode and lose mobile data randomly, so I had to restore. After doing so, I feel the need to share with you a setup that I am blown away by. It is:
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.6)
FB 21 Modem (Steady's newest release)
EL29 Kernel (I know some might be upset it's not the newest available, but go with me here)
Everything is just SO ridiculously snappy, I can't believe what I have been missing. Since the "about phone" only has Gingerbread.EL29 in it and not the rom's developer, I can't be certain about the specific ROM I used but I'm fairly certain it's Blazer.
Anyway, enough of the rant. I suggest those who need a break from flashing all the newest things give this combo a try and let me know if you have a similarly enjoyable experience!
Out of curiosity, how long have you been on this setup?
Surely one of the [email protected] here will chime and tell you of a better way to be certain who's kernel you're using? I could be wrong...
Ill check it out now. If nothing else it will take my mind off the fact that I'm jones'n so hard for CM9 Alpha 4, so why not.
Any particular flash order? ...flash this combo all in one CWM session, or reboot in-between? ...etc. Any additional details you can provide would be helpful. I'm bored atm anyway.
Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately like I said, this was a restore which ended up keeping my FB21 Modem with EL29 Kernel. So I don't know the recommended way to flash, but if I were to do it on my own I would probably say format all, blazer EL29 ROM (with kernel), and then this morning is when I actually ODIN'd the FB21 modem, so probably boot up, turn off, enter ODIN download mode, and do that last.

Exactly the additional info (and potentially useful distraction, if nothing else) for which I was looking. I'll be sure to share some feedback in a day or two.
Thanks again for tryin' to help everyone else out by posting this bro.

Well, it's at least a step towards a consensus. Promising.... Hope you become a hero bro, lol. Seriously though, I'd *so* love it if you're right. win/win for everyone.
I ran this for a few days before going to the FB21 Leaked ICS ROM from Calk. It is very nice.
I ran the fb 21 modem and everything was really awesome. except gps. gps sucked miserably. when I was using fb 15 it worked fine so I have since gone back to it.

Another good sign. I think I need to stop typing and start flashing.
So to be clear FB modems work fine with Gingerbread ROMs? No issues flashing? I was kinda on the fence about it. Im waiting for a stable ICS ROM.
Nevermind flashed it anyway on Blend 2.6.2 ROM. No problems.
Edit, weird LOS issues moved back to EL29.

In that case, your sig needs updating. Lol j/k. Were you using FB21 in combination with Blazer 4.0 and EL29, like the OP? Just curious...
Yes, no issues. A great improvement, actually.
For reference, here is a screenshot of my home screen. Note the status bar....can't recall exactly which ROM this is from but it's pretty distinguishable. My favorite thus far.
So I recently installed Calkulin's custom rom v2.9.2 and now my GPS doesn't lock unless I reboot the phone.
Any fix for this? thanks.
Try GPS status app

I have this same problem.. My GPS Status just sits... doesn't find or fix on any satellites.

just tried this, doesn't work on my phone.
Only thing that works is a reboot which is a hassle everytime i need a GPS lock.
anyone else w/ any suggestions? I'd hate to go back to stock ROM.
Doesn't the GPS continue to work for a few days, before requiring a reboot?
Thats the case with my phone, try different versions of the rooted rom, or radios.

This thread is an amazing source for you to spend countless hours troubleshooting this phone's POS GPS unit.
I've been trying countless things on my phone too, I'll let ya know if anything works.

THanks. upon reading a bit of that thread, I found out that through using "GPS Status" I can refresh the "A-GPS" which I didn't know previously.
This seems to work so far.
I'm running the same rom and have no problems with any of my radios, I did also install the EL29 modem when I installed the rom. You may need to try different modems, they work differently on different phones even though you're running the same roms. Also, don't forget to update profile in /settings/about phone/updates

I was originally on EL29 Stock so I'm assuming when I flashed Calks 2.9.2 the modem's the same.
Is there a link where all the modem's can be found? and can I flash any modem?
Caulkin has a list on the same thread as the rom

Flashed the FB21 Modem and this one looks like a winner!
I'm getting instant GPS locks w/o resetting, rebooting, opening an app etc etc.
On top of that, my 3G/4G speeds have increased!
WOW! I've never loved a phone before but I'm starting to have strong feelings for this one.
Cool, maybe I'll try that one too. Don't forget to update your profile

That's very good.
You may want to test drive the fb12 just for the hell of it. I've gotten 9, 12, & 13mbps.
I did get my 1st failed GPS, but it locked shortly after.

I tried the fc05 got 13 then 4G started to sleep in the middle of things. The trick is to find "the one" that's stable and everything works. I'm gonna try the others and see how they work. But I know that this one works for my phone.

I've tried most of them now and EL29 is still the best on my phone

Update if anyone's interested: FB21 modem w/ EL29 Kernel was good but still had GPS locking issues. I was getting roughly 85% locks (which isn't bad since I test often). FAST download speeds though.
So this got me thinking: When my phone was stock, GPS worked brilliantly. It wasn't until I installed a custom rom that it started to have problems. The difference was the kernel and modems.
So now I flashed back to EK02 modem and kernel (still running Calks 2.9.2) and my GPS has been locking 100% of the time. PLUS my phone is silky smoooooth!
Crossing my fingers that this will last....
