1) Rooted phone
2) Installed Titanium Backup (Root)
3) Make backup of Maps application using Titanium
4) Wipe Data for Maps using Titanium
5) Uninstall Maps using Titanium
6) Download Maps_mod_6.1.1v2_non_root.apk from the link I provided
7) Rename file to Maps.apk
8) Transfer using any root explorer to /system/app/ on your Galaxy W
9) Now you should have working Google Maps navigation

Is there a way too download the whole google map?
I dont want to pay data connection for using GPS.
Thanks.
hi, it s second time i see that s kind of funny question.
google map is a online only tools.
the amount of data that google hosting is huge.
satellite photo of the world, tons of poi, ...
so terrabite of data.
it s so easy to understand that no phone could never, ever, host
google map.
have fun
An alternative then?
thanks
TomTom, Navigon, Route 66 etc...
iGO8 is also an alternative.. A little bit of tweaking but worth it.
Anyways, was Google maps preinstalled on your HDs? I didn't have it on mine from the box but the funny thing is that HD Tweak still allowed me to assign a shortcut for it (left or right softkey)
Try java MGMaps. I did not tried it on blackstone but it should work. It supports multiple map providers (google, yahoo, microsoft) and there was an external tool (i don't remember its name, never used it) for predownloading maps - it can work offline too.

Yes, there is Terracrosser : http://terracrosser.com/
It allows to perform exactly what you want to do. First, you use Mapper (included) to download maps on your PC. There they get packed so that you can copy them into the Terracrosser folder on your phone.
However, as Geistteufel already said, downloading such maps takes alot of space. Plus, you should not abuse with the downloads, that is downloading the whole world or a continent or a bigger country, as Google keeps a blacklist. You don't wanna become (black)listed, do you ? Actually, I don't know if that which you can do with the Mapper tool is even legal ...
You can use Google Navigator. When registered you can download a map area with a range of depths. Or simply browe the surface of the Earth and you'll get on you card a big file containing all that you have seen, like in desktop Google Earth.
Georgeous2008,why would I be blacklisted for download a lot?
Wowozanga, can I get a link? Is it free?
I tried the Terracrosser program and it looks hard to use as the gps keeps shifting left or right non stop.
I cant even open the Mapper app because it just gives a unexpected shutdown on the program.
I gave up with it.
How about gpsVP?
originally, it was for Garmin vector maps, but currently it also displays Google/Live/OpenMap map and satellite. Maps gan be cached by the XP version, and the cache folder synced to the handheld.

Refer to the Google Maps general conditions for further information.
Google Navigator
Google Navigator:
http://www.pdafun.net
Last version is 4.6.
For the convenience of space you may want to install on a SD card of at least 2 GB, formated with FAT32.

Ill give it a shot.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
Try GPS Tuner, in their forum they have mentioned a tool with which you can download the google maps for any area at any depth. I am currently using it and also GPS Tuner is the best. (But the tool is downloading maps in JPG format so you will not be able to make searches for POI etc.
GPS Tuner
I have been using GPS Tuner for a long time, but you have to use other programs to download the tiles of image (Google Satellite Maps Downloader), or use big jpegs (captured in Google Maps on PC) already calibrated with the PC soft that come with GPS Tuner (Map Calibrator) that are working veeeeery sloooow. After a couple of images downloaded with Google Satellite Maps Downloader, Google will ban you IP address for 24 hours, and you will not get other images.
In Google Navigator everything you have downloaded remains in archive and can be used when offline, with roadmap, satelite view, depending which mode you were using when browsing the Earth surface and the level of zoom. This program is "trusted" by Google Maps and you can download a lot of images. If eventually you will get banned, you have a command to reactivate the path to Google Maps.
Now I'm just waiting for a "medicine " for the current version.
Best regards,
Wowozange

As already mentioned by someone else the mapping data that google hosts for us is so big that one can hardly image its size. Have a look here, the first link. I just hope that this very valuable service will remain available for free despite the global financial black hole .
Now to your particular need, the mobile version of Google earth has also a local cache (possibly configurable!?) so when you are online at a flat rate you can "pre"-visit the place you will later be going offline so as to download the mapping data on your device in advance.
I believe terracrosser is fantastic for that use, but dont work on blackstone...
Anyone can help about this?

Not sure if this has been covered but came accross this site earlier.
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/04/add-turn-by-turn-navigation-to-htc-desire/
I know have full voice search on my desire and don't have to type an address in Google maps, I just tell it where I want to go.
Some good tips on the site.
*Sigh*
on the other hand you could use the official Google Maps which has full Navigation.
From that link...
EDIT: Please not that as of today 21/04/2010. Googe HAVE implemented turn by turn navigation for the UK. Simply use the default maps app that came pre-installed on your device to use this functionality.

I think you are missing the point, you can search the destination by voice using the google maps.
The link I submitted has a section to replace the Desire keyboard .apk with a voice search enabled one.
You mean this one?

I made a search but couldn't find a similar topic on xda or Google. I started using latitude today via Google maps but noticed that I don't a widget called "Latitude" on my desire.
Any idea why this is the case ? It should present, right ?
I don't know if there is a specific latitude widget (I haven't found one), but if you go into (google) maps and press the menu button, you get an option for latitude.....
Hope this helps

Yes I am using that, but there is also latitude widget. I found out that the widget comes with the new google maps (v 4.1), however in my country the application is not present in market section due to the licencing ang legal stuff (according to an announcement by google). Which is very odd because I am using google maps w/o problem, workes flawlessy. why can't I update it, beats me ?
I need to find free app maps 4.1 and install it. Hopefully thw widget will come.

Thanks for the link, it solved my problem.

As the title says this is a mod to enable google maps with voice navigation outside US. If this has been discussed in the SGS2 thread, please delete it but i tried to search and none found in this forum.
all credits are due to all the people that have made this into a working mod
This is the original thread where i got all the info from :
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007132
Basically i just followed the instructions from original forum and here is the summary of how i did it.
1. made a backup of google maps using titanium backup.
2. in manage application settings, cleared data and stop maps as well as streetview applications.
3.using root explorer navigate to system/app and move the map.apk and streetview.apk files to my backup folder in the external sd card.(just as alternate backup since titanium already made a backup)
4. using root explorer, Installed the maps5.5.0-ownhere.apk which i got from the original forum to the system/apps folder.
5 reinstalled the streetview app from the market.
6. Rebooted and started the maps application everything was running fine.
when i was driving just to test the app..i found out i did not have the voice guidance...
so for voice guidance this is what i did.
1. Go to settings/voice input and output/text to speech settings
found out default engine was on samsung TTS...i changed that to pico TTS
2. Language for spoken text select English UK( to make it same as my
language&keyboard settings)
3. in the text to speech setting i checked the always use my settings box.
Did another test drive...on the phone, i selected the NAV app from the app drawer and voila!...google navigation (beta) successfully launched and was able to give me turn by turn voice guidance.
Pros and cons:
pros:
Alternative free navigation app with voice guidance for people outside us.
Cons:
Needs a working data connection
Obvious battery drainer if not plugged in to power source.
phone gets pretty hot( i guess this app is not optimized for dual core and while it is running..probably both the cores went into high gear) anyway my car dock is located at a position where the aircond can cool the back of the phone pretty well..so mine was not hot when using it in the car.
when exiting the nav app...found it is still running in the back ground and draining battery( got to manually kill it from task manager)
If you guys decide to try this...usual disclaimer: Do this at your own risk
Hi,
I was able to get Google Play on the unlocked $199 Amazon firephone without rooting. Also was able to get All google apps from play store and change the Launcher.
Only question is that Google maps labels are being overlapped (they are not refreshing) - Is this a known google map side load problem, or I just have a crappy version of the app with the wrong resolution?
Thanks,
( I have the steps to easily get Google play on the fire sale forum topic)
- As an employee of the maker, I will try to get the guys at Lab126 release some dev version that allows users to easily switch between Google experience and Amazon experience on this phone seamlessly - that would make it truly a good phone.
What happens when Google pushes an update to the store? Does this stop working?
The overlapping text appears to be caused by Google Maps not detecting the phone's resolution correctly. Can you try an older version of Google Maps?
Sorry if I'm not being helpful--I won't have my Fire Sale Phone yet until Tuesday.

Extremely old version worked fine (4.4) - Tried all the ICS and up version 8.0 through to current - all have the label problem. Could be Some GPU rendering issue with text (I worked for something similar at my last job) - the website maps look ok from chrome/etc. so it must be in the app - dunno if I should reverse engineer the APK to get the setting corrected - I filed a bug with google to see if it is a known problem with certain devices.
I am using google maps for search and then using nokia maps for navigation currently - so should not be a big problem for now.
If you can get devs to release a version that can toggle ON/OFF the AVD launcher that'd be awesome. It shouldn't take too much time to do.
Meanwhile I guess we'll just have to sideload apps
Overlapping text

Don't know if this is relevant because I am not a developer but if you go into settings/applications and parental control/manage applications, then click on google maps and then on clear data, when you go back into google maps there is no overlapping of text initially. After you start zooming out or moving around the map, the overlapping starts back up.
I've noticed that the maps, on first launch, looked fine.
My Gmail will sporadically sync emails. Sometimes, it's instant; other times, it won't try to sync at all.
Found simple workaround for Google Maps If you don't use the voice Navigation feature (needed for California in driving)-
(uninstall Google Maps - optional)
1) Install Chrome and allow it to use location
2) from google app search for address by your voice and get direction card (google now style)
3) tap card (will prompt you to open first time with native Nokia/Here or Chrome or Gmaps)
4) Use Chrome to see the map and you can set chrome as default
Chrome Google map application/page is mostly same functionality as the Jelly bean version of Google maps (Left menu has traffic, transit, bicycle & satellite) only terrain is missing. - You can also bookmark Google map in Chrome and get almost everything you need for directions in regular usage.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I have narrowed down the app problem to the system fonts/antialiased fonts used by the stupid fire OS - without rooting I doubt you can change the system font of the phone. If somebody has developer mode -try enabling GPU rendering and see if anything stands out v/s other android devices - I will check on my wife's HTC One M8 later.

Yeah. The Gmail app has problems. It crahes periodically and doesn't want to auto sync. Also, i can't add a second Google account. It says that it can't communicate with Google servers and then gives a message about no network connection which is wrong.
I am on Thor Gapps Rom ( 13.3.2.4 ) rom and got the same issue too!
Google Earth works just fine - So there are 2 workarounds - Google Maps from Chrome and Google Earth
The Waze app also seems OK.
Upload to Fire OS 4.6.1 . the issue gets solved. You week receive an OTA update.
