[Q] Windows 7 MTP Copy To Device Warning - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is there any way to remove the warning when copying songs or movies over to the Galaxy Nexus on windows 7 via MTP? It's not really harming anything but it is quite annoying and an unneccesary extra step.

I've been looking for a solution to this for the longest time.

A zeppelin song as an MKV? Am I missing something, lol.
I know this doesn't help, at all, but I used to get those messages. After reformatting windows due to a computer upgrade, those messages went away.
Perhaps it was because I didn't use windows updates at all, but my new system is completely up to date. Give that a shot. I tried searching around for an answer a few months ago, and couldn't come up with anything.

You would have better luck on Windows 7 forums asking for help with this.

Did you copy mkv files? It only says that for files it does not understand/recognize with WMP, I think.

You are correct, I get the same message when copying an MKV.

Has anyone ever found a solution to this? So annoying..

I have the same problem, but with all files.. ever .mp3's, so i dont think its because WMP cant read them :S

[Q] MTP Thumbnails?

okay, maybe i'm insane, or theres something wrong with my computer, but anytime i connect my Gnex, picture thumbnails never load.
this is the most annoying thing in the world. I wanted to go through my icons and erase some since doing it in the gallery is a lot harder, and no thumbnails load.
even for the camera images, so i can't even tell what image i'm trying to get if i want to move my pictures from the phone to the computer.
i've desperately searched google for MTP Thumbnails and found nothing. so i'm really hoping someone here can help.
wow almost 12 hours and nothing? no one plugged their phone into a PC in 12 hours and could check. not hard.
I can't see any thumbnails either on my Nexus. I was just doing an internet search on this issue and haven't found anything yet.
thanks for the reply, well i'm kinda glad to know it's not just me.
i spent well over an hour doing google searches for MTP thumbnails and found nothing. hope somehow theres a way to enable them because it's really a pain in the ass

Phone's back from the dead. Any ways to retrieve information that's been formatted?

Hi guys,
anyone's who's read my posts would know my phone died recently due to zero battery and going through the boot loop cycle continuously. After leaving it overnight for 2 days on a iPad charger, it came back on again. My phone's done a hard reset, and I was wondering if there are any softwares available to retrieve the information in it. I know there're tools to retrieve information from hard drives that have been formatted, and would appreciate if any of you know of a tool that can get my photos out of my phone. Thanks in advance.

Well, that greatly depends on how thorough you're hoping this will be. Anything synced through Zune should be available, anything replicated to the cloud should be available (Windows Live ID, if you have an exchange server, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts, etc.) - but any game data is pretty much lost. In general, any applications that store info locally is pretty much lost AFAIK.
There's an application in Marketplace called Reinstaller that identifies apps you've already installed and helps you loop through them to, well, surprise surprise, re-install them. It's quite useful, here's the link in the Marketplace: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/search?q=Reinstaller

Thanks for the reply. My phone ran out of juice pretty much right after my trip to Taiwan, where I took quite a few photos. I didn't have time to sync it with my computer before it died. It's those photos I wish to retrieve. Any other suggestions?
My buddy who has an iPhone told me that in order to retrieve information from the iPhone, it needs to first be jailbreaked. That way we can bypass the phone's OS and connect to the hard drive directly. Obviously it's a long shot as any software would still need to retrieve what's been formatted over, but I wonder if it holds true in our case as well. Will I need to 'jailbreak' my phone first?

Thanks again, eknuston.
I did a search online, and came across 2 photo recovery tools, which spelt out were meant for the Lumia 900.
The Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery
http://android-photo-recovery.com/tutorials/recover-deleted-photos-videos-from-nokia-lumia-900.html
Photo Recovery Pro
http://android-photo-recovery.com/tutorials/recover-deleted-photos-videos-from-nokia-lumia-900.html
Unfortunately, both tools could not recognize our phones in the drive directory. That's when I realized that Windows 7 does not allow our phones to be used as removable drives.
I've since cracked the registry (using this tutorial)
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/18/use-your-windows-phone-7-device-as-a-portable-usb-drive/
My computer could recognize the phone, but the directories were empty. So I installed this:
http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/11/18/use-your-windows-phone-7-device-as-a-portable-usb-drive/
and I can now access the current files in my phone.
HOWEVER, I STILL AM UNABLE TO RETRIEVE THE ERASED FILES, as the 2 softwares are still unable to recognize the phone as a drive, despite the fact that the file explorer can.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do next (other than forget about the files, get a new phone, etc.). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I forgot to mention that 'Computer Management' under Window's Administrative Tools, can't find the phone too. I suspect they're linked..
4th link?
Did you mean for the 4th link to be the same as the 3rd? I am trying to follow your steps to see if I can access my files but I am not sure what did you install in order to see your current files after the registry change. Thanks.
Formatted data recovery
Hi
You can recover formatted data using best media recovery software. Using this software I was able to restore digital data from formatted usb flash drive. So, you can download demo version of this software and check it.

Hey guys, just stop posting BS about "flash drive recovery"...
Lumia 900 isn't a flash drive and can't be restored this way (it works via Zune drivers, and shows not an actual "drive" but just some "virtual folders").
Finalizing: MCChang, you can't recover lost pics or any other info. And I can give the only one suggestion: next time if you want to keep your pics/info, use clouds (WP7 have ability to automatically upload pictures to the SkyDrive).

Can't put movies on the Note II

Hello,
When I try to drag & drop movies to my Note II I am getting an error. I did a search on Google and I the answer I got is that the phone isn't in UMS mode. Then I searched how to put my Note II in UMS mode but the answer was: it can't. Although the answer isn't positive I am just putting up a new thread, maybe someone actually does know how to do this.
Thank you!

Might help if you posted up the error you are getting.
Whilst the Note 2 doesn't support UMS, it does support MTP, so I am assuming, since you've mentioned dragging and dropping, that this is working and you are seeing your Note 2 as a device.
How big are the movies you are trying to copy onto your Note 2?

Hello Dave,
Thank you for your reply.
When I am trying to drag & drop the movie I am not getting a error specifically, but a window that comes up with the message: windows explorer isn't reacting.
That is correct, I am seeing my Note 2 as a device, in particular a portable media player. Actually it isn't a movie but a Sopranos episode. It's about 2/3 gigabytes big.
I really can't figure out why it doesn't work.
Thank you.

I would like a faster solution for bigger files. But thank you anyways, I'll do it via this app till I got an solid solution.
Try transferring a smaller video file to see if that makes a difference. Do you have any problems transferring other file types (pics, text)?

I know if your memory is in FAT32 format you cannot place files on it larger than 4GB. Also if you are rooted there is an app(s) in the market for Samsung devices that switches your phone from MTP to the Android 2.3.3 USB Mass Storage Mode that might yield better results for you. I believe it is "USB Mode Switch" on Google Play. There is also a way to do it though ADB.

3rd time today I think im recommending goodsync If your devices are on the same network the transfer speed is around 2-4Mb/sec but beats connecting wires and such. Give it a shot.

No, it's a common problem.
Perhaps you should mention what format video file it is. Natively it will only allow you to transfer mp4 files. Any other files and mtp will ask if you want to convert the file. Perhaps the mtp is trying to convert the video file before the transfer. That may be the problem you are experiencing.

the problem hasnt returned.
coming from htc, kies is the only thing i really dislike about samsung products, and will make me root if i can go back to simple plug in and pc recogise it as a hard drive like it did in the end on my gtab.

Similar to dropbox but much faster. Drop box syncs the same folders. With goodsync you can choose which folder to sync with what. Secondly dropbox stores data in the air, goodsync doesnt.

What version of windows? Windows can not see the Note2 as an external hard drive-device to drag & drop to?
What about transferring the files to a micro-sdhc card on your pc then putting it in your Note2 (which you could transfer to internal memory if you want)?
Alternatively, what about uploading to Google Drive or Dropbox & downloading it to the Note 2?

I would suggest that if you are getting a message about Windows Explorer not reacting, the problem is more likely related to the PC, not the Note.
Have you tried on a different PC?

Is not the PC. I've seen this same problem many times since Google implemented MTP, it's complete garbage.
Windows is erroring because the transfer is damned slow that it just times out on large files. I've pretty much given up trying and just take the SD card out and plug it in to my card reader now; it's faster and actually WORKS.

Sorry, but I've transferred films larger than this without error, so I cannot agree with your findings.
YMMV, but thus far I have not had to remove the sdcard from my Note 2 in order to transfer a movie to my device. The largest individual file I've transferred came in at a shade under 2GB, but I've also transferred over 4GB total in multiple files without issue.

Dave.

I had a similar issue, the fix isn't exactly something you'd think of.
Do you have the DivX codec installed on your PC?
If yes, uninstall it. Doing so fixed the issue for me.
Any mkv file I tried transferring would crash Windows Explorer until I uninstalled the DivX codec.

[Q] Creating folders/renaming files from pc freezes explorer

Hello, I am having a problem with my note 3 where if I access it from my computer (through usb 3.0), trying to create folders or rename anything causes the explorer window to freeze without accomplishing anything. I've seen posts about this before on here but without any solution. Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix this? Clearly most people do not have this problem. I will update if more information is needed.
I'll add that I am not sure if the problem actually lies with the phone or my computer, however I have never experienced this with anything other than my phone, including of course external hard drives.
WiFi File Transfer can help

I have been having the exact same problem with my Note 3, as recently as last night. I connect the device, the computer recognizes it, and I can browse the files/folders, move things around. But if I try to rename a folder, it just freezes. Actually, sometimes it freezes when I try to copy files too. I have no idea why.
I found a way to get around it, but it involves using the WiFi File Transfer app from the Play Store. The app is excellent. You install it, and then just type in the URL it gives you in your web browser. You can do everything you would normally do with your device (transfer files, rename folders, delete files, etc). There's both a free and a pro version. I bought the pro because it was such a useful app. Link below:

(Hit the thanks if it was helpful. )
I have always had this problem.
It's something to do with how the phone is mounted to the pc. They changed it a few yrs back.
So I now just use wifi tranfer app. It's fast and I don't have to plug up the phone every time I need a file.
And I think it's freezing because it's re reading the phone and taking to long and timing out or something.

Hmm, interesting. Have either of you tried AirDroid? I haven't tried the software you guys linked yet but judging purely by the play store page, AirDroid looks like it functions and looks better. Anyway, I was aware of that option and AirDroid is what I'm using right now but I still find it annoying to have to switch from one to the other. I was hoping there would be an easy fix.
Am I allowed to make two questions in one thread or should I make another thread?

Yes, I have tried Airdroid a couple of times, as recently as last week. WiFi File Transfer is much simpler to use IMO, which is exactly what I was looking for. But i'm sure that either would work for what the OP is looking for.

Any way to temporarily Disable SE on galaxy S3 with android 4.4?

Hello. I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747 on Rogers Canada) with android 4.4 - stock/not rooted. The other day I hooked up my S3 to my laptop using a USB cable. My laptop is running Win XP SP3. I COPIED ALL the pictures from the phone to the Laptop. The pics were visible on BOTH my phone and my laptop when I finished the transfer. I am guessing it used Windows Media as the transfer medium as Kies was not running. While the phone was still linked to the Laptop I thought I would just delete the ones off the phone that I didn't want. I did so. I then unhooked the phone from the laptop. Ouch!!! The pictures I had deleted from the phone were missing from BOTH the phone and the laptop. First I checked the laptop trash bin. Nothing there. I then tried using the Recuva undelete software on my laptop disk as I thought there should be a deleted copy on the disk as they were visible on screen before I unplugged my phone. It recovered some 94k plus jpg's and I spent more than a day scanning them for the ones I needed. Nothing there. So I thought I needed to run an undelete on the phone. HA HA to that!!! It seems that in the android developers great wisdom the phone is no longer considered a mass storage device when hooked to a computer but is a media device. MY interpretation but something like that. Next I did a BUNCH of reading and made a bunch of phone calls for advice. I tried all kinds of tricks. I tried a number of android undelete programs. I had the USB debugging enabled but all the programs I tried didn't recover any deleted jpg's. Even the programs that said they could. It turns out that the phone HAS to be linked as a mass storage device with a drive letter for the android recovery software to work to recover jpg's. It seems to be able to find other file types but not jpg's.
Now here is the interesting part. I tried linking the phone to my desktop (XP SP3 also) and my laptop dozens of times hoping something would change. I believe that once on my desktop and once on my laptop it showed up as a mass storage device. I say "I believe" because I was so conditioned to it NOT showing as a mass storage device that both times I had already clicked on the icon that releases the phone from the computer before I realized there was a drive letter there. Anyway, the time on my laptop that it happened was around the time I had run one of the android file recovery programs. The program had not found any jpg files but when it finished my phone had a message something like "SE has been disabled". blah blah blah. I did a BUNCH more reading and researching about SE on my phone. The best I can figure is that it is a security enhancement designed to stop programs getting at, or changing things in, other programs on the phone and is set somewhere in the policies file - where ever that is.
My question is - Is it possible to temporarily disable SE so I can try and get my pictures back? Thank you, Derek-j

This is the international i9300 area, to save you posting this long message again I will get a Mod to move it for you to the i747 area but I wish you the best of luck.
SElinux stands for "security enhanced Linux" and turning it to permissive will not do a lot I believe. However this app can enable UMS on your phone again. Here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mohammadag.samsungusbmassstorageenabler
Thank you...

Oooppss...not going to work. First off...my phone is stock and this requires rooting. I don't know much about rooting and don't have a problem trying it but I suspect that would likely over-write some or all of the deleted jpg's I want to recover thus defeating the purpose. The other and absolutely CRITICAL thing is that it does NOT enable USB for internal memory. You'd think that the GOOGLE developers would know better than to remove that important feature, especially in an (upgrade???). I had even thought of going back to one of the older versions but again I think that would destroy some of the file entries and delete the very pics I am trying to get back....
I REALLY DO APPRECIATE your trying to help though.
Have a FANTASTIC week. Derek-J.
So BACK TO SQUARE ONE...Anyone know how to temporarily disable the SE feature?
