it no longer does landscape
also I forgot to add if you would like to see this work with launchers like apex or nova to get more of an ics feel you should go vote on their suggestion sites
here http://novalauncher.uservoice.com/forums/145180-nova-launcher
and here http://apexlauncher.uservoice.com/forums/146396-general-feedback
and vote to have shortcuts to different homescreens (at this point it would be easier for it to work with nova launcher since it already has customizable icons but apex launcher should be getting that soon)
Wow that looks pretty cool!
Cheers for the guide, I have used this as inspiration for my home screens, I'm still working on a few bits but will post screenshots later.

Working on a new work around for this, and it should also improve battery life, and possibly amount of time to set up (for everyone but me). The basic idea is this, instead of using a widget to cover up the home screen icons, edit your wallpaper to cover up the icons and have that as the style instead. I havent had much time to work with this yet but i will hopefully get this up and running soon. But i have tested and the shortcuts do survive a wipe if you just backup adw, so you shouldnt have to do any work to set this up after flashing things.
created a work around heres the background... image still needs some editting as it does not like up quiet right with actions

What you have to do is resize it to cover over it and that is how you move it over. The youtube video is a bit better to see how to do this.

Okay, finally rooted my arc, and I wanted to have a semi-transparant notificationbar.
That worked well with apps like gmail and market like this:
But it doesn't work with my Launcher, than it looks like this:
Does any one know if I am doing something wrong or is it something LauncherPro Launcher can't handle? If so, which Launcher can, I tried GO Launcher without any luck, only the default Sony Launcher worked, but I want to use my own dock and scrollable widgets.
Any suggestions are welcome!
Cheers,
Arnold
I believe LauncherPro crops wallpapers, so it could be that your statusbar is transparent, there's just nothing behind it.
Try switching to an alternative launcher (even the stock SE one) to test it.
To be honest, in the long run, you'd be better off finding an alternative to LauncherPro, it's stagnated.
No idea about cropping, I tested a few free launchers from the market in the meantime, Sony Arc default launcher and Regina Launcher can handle the statusbar as I wanted, but they have to little options for my likings...
Thanks anyway for replying. I also posted in the UOT topic, maybe there is something else I can do.
I know Launcher Pro is stagnated, but the scrollable widgets and possibilities to customize is still keeping me at LP.....besides I am Dutch and I paid for it
LauncherPro is certainly odd in the way it does stuff.
I know from experience that it doesn't draw the app drawer background behind the statusbar, so I wouldn't be surprised if it handled wallpapers a wee bit differently too.
I used to swear by LauncherPro, I tried ADW, Go, Zeam etc and wasn't impressed but over time they've improved and LauncherPro hasn't.
The only two things I miss about LauncherPro are the ability to hide apps in the app drawer and the widgets you get with the Pro version.
In terms of customisability, I don't think it really is that much better than the rest of them - most launchers share most of the same options.
And which launcher is able to keep my own dock like pic2 in my first post and can handle the customized statusbar? That would be great....
sent from arc or optimus 2x
I thought ADW did but after a second look it doesn't, my mistake.
edit: no, I was right - ADW EX does (that's the paid version).
ADW is open-sourced so as well as the main one (ADW EX), there are a number of other docks based on it's code. I'm using one of those spin-offs, so I don't have all the same options.
Tested adw ex for a few minutes, really annoying you don't have proper time to test, but I am almost certain the statusbar can't be changed neither, I have the same as launcher pro.
Tried zeam launcher as well, but there you can't use custom dock....lol, I quess its not possible what I want...
Thanks for replying though, appreciated much!

You're welcome.
Sorry you couldn't find an answer to your problem.
Hopefully there is someone out there who knows a launcher which I can use my transparent statusbar and my Dutch dock as well...
Cheers again.

Launcher pro does support transparent status bar.
statusbar_background.png editted and note paper wallpaper added to homescreen for purpose of screenshot.
From left to right = 100% transparent, white, black, red, green, yellow.
Bottom half = 50% transparent. See below

I don't mean to be rude about the guy, what he's done is amazing, but the longer it drags on, the harder I find it to believe that this mythical new version is actually on it's way...
@Pollpix: how exactly did you get your statusbar to look like this?
what did you use to change the statusbar itself?
I used uot kitchen, set transparent statusbar, color white, put it I think on 20%, used multi picture wall paper and with this greyish background it looks like this. Also I used icons for white status bar in the kitchen and put the time on blackish, like rgb 30,30,30, so together with this 20% transparency it is still visible when using black apps like tapatalk. The font is Sony sketch obviously... Hope this helps...

However I'm trying to make it function more like the Android Market home screen, where you scroll vertically as opposed to horizontally.
I'm using Go Launcher EX and as far as I've gathered none of the launchers I've tried have the option to scroll vertically.
Does anyone know of any launchers that have that ability?
Nice!
When you manage to get that thing together i will test drive the hell out of it for you. Windows 7 themed launcher moves up and down. There may be others though so don't quote me on it

I tried Win 7 Launcher previously but you're only limited to tiles 1x1 or 1x2 & some of the tiles that come preconfigured are locked onto the screen (i.e you can't remove them).
Actually what I'm doing is nothing really more then creating tiles & placing them onto the screen. I wish though that I did know how to create a launcher, I'm just using a pre-existing one, though none have the vertical scrolling feature that I would like.
Can you decompile it make the necessary mods repack sign and test? I know I am making it sound easy. I know nothing of developing so I can be of much help.

No luck as of yet. Hopefully one off the existing launchers will incorporate that function in the future

Well it is a vertical launcher but after messing with it for awhile it does not allow me to remove the preset icons (you can only remove ones you create) & if using tiles you cannot get them to align in such a manner that they touch end to end. I was hoping to use the launcher to create tiles of my own using Desktop Visualizer. This is what I have created using Go Launcher, just want the home screens to scroll vertically. My ultimate goal is to create a home screen that scrolls vertically & create something that looks very similar to the Android Market:
I have send an email to the golauncher developers too and vot one back. But i think it's just a standard reply so i don't expect any luck there
EL TEJANO i want exactly the same thing. I've spend so many hours on the Internet searching with no luck. It's getting frustrating. I really hope golauncher or any other good launcher like ADW or Launcher Pro can add this function
So this thread is dead now?

There should be no dependencies.
However try integrating it into the firmware (it was designed to work from /system/app)- ICS does restrict launcher behaviour if it is not a system app (like for Apex- you can't put a widget from Drawer if it's a user app)

No, it is for all screen sizes (well, maybe except qvga but I didn't test this)
Like Trebuchet Concept, Looking Forward
Once I figured out how to use it, I kind of like the minimalist approach. Dragging app icons and widgets to the screens is much quicker than click, click, find, click, ... and the widget re-sizing dot feature touted in Jellybean is already there (but can be applied asymmetrically for some strange results).
However, this thing is still primitive. No properties except wallpapers.
I put on adw (former XDA launcher) just to have a more usable system. I do not look for fancy eye-candy like go. Just some simple properties like:
Grid density--I like fitting more icons on the page (I find the adw refitting not the best so leave that unchecked).
Along with this, might need the widget auto-refit idea from Jellybean.
Number of home screens (elementary).
Last but not least, a backup and restore.
Another interesting idea I got by accident in another launcher: superimpose icon over larger widget. When clicked, takes precedence, of course. Since screen real-estate, especially in smaller phones, is at a premium, this could be a "killer."
Two bugs I found:
Possible to place two icons in same place on app bar. Embarrassing.
Widgets did not "come back" after reboot sometimes.
Got a Nice Version!
There are multiple versions around for download, without any systematic way of choosing other than: The Biggest Has More Features Implemented. I found a 10 meg version in a flash-able zip that has most of what I wanted already there!
Still needs a backup and save, and important: way of resetting as the default launcher
The general widget re-sizing works great, even re-positioning to a halfway spot so the re-sizing makes sense. Great.
Minor bugs around:
The news and weather widget re-sizing works incorrectly. ADW does it fine.
Icon label text is cut off (at least on 5-row view). Vertical padding makes it worse. Needs be tucked in closer to the icon.
I might assume that a somewhat larger apk is around somewhere with more features and fixes. Once I can get it again as default launcher, I will play with it some more.
It did not passed on my 7 inch tablet :-( There is margins at the bottom and top with a height of regular icon size.

Didn't know whether to put this here or in Q and A, so apologies if it needs moving, but I'm using apex launcher on my N7 so i can change the icons on my homescreen. I really like the sets that blackblearblanc does in particular.
I've noticed though that they all look pixelated on the N7.
Is there anything I can do to get them to crisp up, or should I be looking for anything in particular when looking at icon sets? A certain pixel density, size etc.?
Help, as always, is massively appreciated.
Cheers

It's compatible enough. You can download from Play Store and all the features are working great. They're working on getting it better though.
Since Apex is mainly for phones the icons aren't usually designed to stretch to our screen size. They'll work but they might look a bit pixelated. I'm using Apex with stock icons to avoid the eyesore.
Try searching for HDPI icon packs. Those would be the best qualified(I think) for stretching out while still maintaining image integrity.

Thanks for the responses. I tested the chrome theme from the play store and found that the icons looked good but didn't fill the entire icon area. If I manually picked a chrome icon then it stretched and looked rubbish again.
Guess I'll have to wait for more hd themes and sets.

I bought 2 icon packs for my then 7" Coby tablet, from the Play Store. They worked well and all was good. Then a few tablets later, I tried them on my Transformer Prime...and they looked so bad they were unusable. So I emailed the dev, and he said my Prime is probably looking for XHDPI icons, and he doesn't support that now. So he emailed me the .apk and basically said to crack it open and resize the images in something like Gimp or PS, then repackage. I just unzipped the apk, and noticed mdpi, hdpi etc. So I manually changed each icon, grabbing the highest DPI images that were in the apk. Worked great, and I've used that a few times now on different themes. Just thought that may help you in the future
This may or may not be what you are looking for but this is what i did.
i have apex on my TF300, and i was using the ICS plates theme from the market. once applying the theme all the icons looked really nice, however, there were a few icons that didn't come over or that i wanted to change to another icon.
when lonpressing and manually editing the icon, i got terrible resolutions on the images when i "select from icon packs". however, when i "select picture" it still allowed me to choose from the icon packs and the icons come across crystal clear.
like i said, maybe not what you were looking for, but figured i would post my experiences just in case.

Hey, gang. I did several searched through the site but didn't find a solution. Let me toss this out there. I'm looking for an app with a particular function. What I want to do is "freeze" the locations of the icons/widgets on the screens. Something that will allow their use, but not their moving or deletion.
Here's the deal. My daughter loves my N7, and uses it for her ECSE and speech therapy classes with specific apps to facilitate her development. (She's ASD.) She's really good about the length of time she's on the tablet, and has never gone off and gotten into any trouble with it. The problem is that several of her apps have a "drag and drop on the red X" function to close particular segments or sections within the apps. They're similar enough to the "drag and drop onto the red X" function in the Droid UI that she gets confused, deletes the icons for the apps themselves, and then can't find them the next time she wants to use them.
While I can set up a second user with her name and the same development apps that she uses, it still won't stop her from losing icons from time to time.
I've looked into a number of parental control apps, and while they clamp things down, I haven't found one that locks or "freezes" the positions of the icons.
Does something like this even exist? Trolling through Google Play hasn't found anything specific. Device is stock 4.2.2, unlocked and rooted, if that makes any different in recommendations. Thanks, all. :fingers-crossed:
Have you tried something like Apex Launcher? You could set up the layout and then use the Lock Desktop option to prevent any changes to the home screens.

I think this is the easiest way to do this. You'll get the same functionality from Nova too and HOLO I think.

With SS Launcher you can move any icon to any position on the screen (no grid), rotate to any angle, resize and recolor, pretty much unlimited. Many examples in this thread. My Home (notice Flipboard and FUEL at an angle; also notice that Wifi Manager widget is "behind" Widgetsoid widgets at bottom so all are active):
Sorry to not get back sooner, got mired in a 65 hour week.
Cue forehead-slapping "doh!" image. I got my head fixated on an app, and completely forgot about alternate launchers. Brilliant suggestion, guys, many thanks. Can you run the lock functions over a stock layout? ASD kids do well with routine and familiarity, and it would help that she not have to relearn new of screen layouts. OTOH, I can always replicate the layout that I already have, too.
Thanks again, gang, the advice and recommendations are appreciated.
I know nova aill let you import the layout from other launchers not sure if apex does it too or not. But worth checking.
