Hey,
I've got a situation. I'd like to try and run a HTC Sense 2.1 version, preferably the one from Coolexe into a different Hboot than the common type. Namely into a Hboot with 210/205Mb for system and 5Mb cache so I can have the rest for Data, this is because I prefer to have everything on the nand of the phone instead of the sd-ext etc! I've posted the coming question in his topic aswell..
Coolexe uses at his own ROM a trick which enables him to use the cache partition, he then symlinks those files (which are in the cache partition) to the /system folder. So when I figured that out, I went and put some files into the cache partition so my system folder is lower than 180MB, this way I could use the Sense Hboot. Everything went fine and the ROM booted, however I couldn't get on my WiFi. I did see my WiFi, but I could not connect..
To check if it wasn't the ROM I put everything back into the /system folder and tried the ROM with the stock Hboot. This time everything just worked. So I think that the symlinking simply just doesn't work..
When I looked at titanium backup, with the symlinking ROM, my system folder sayd that my /system had no room left anymore. So I think because of that it won't get an IP address.
So I read somewhere that Thalamus made a Hboot creater, so I thought my problem is solved now! I'll just create my own Hboot.. However when I tried to make a Hboot similar to the one from Oxygen or CM7r2, just to check if everything worked the way it had to, the md5sum didn't match.. So now I'm wondering if someone has created a good functioning Hboot with that tool, I prefer not to brick my phone
So I was wondering if someone had the same problem? And if someone doesn't have this problem could he/she create a custom Hboot of 210mb for me? Or something what comes near that figure..
If someone has an idea about why I don't get an IP address I'm glad aswell!
Thanks in advance
i had about dozen done... everything is spot on... HERE IS YOURS
md5:
114213A25C3C2E6148B838F5628E5027
Tried and working
About IP address:
Is it still obtaining IP? try to set IP manually, on my router(wifi N) i can't connect without static IP... previous router worked perfectly but unfortunately it was not WIFI N
_thalamus developed an app to create your own hboots:
http://thalamus-hacking.blogspot.com/2011/07/custom-hbootsupdate.html
I knew that MatDroid, like I sayd in my topic start (at least I tried too).. However my MD5sum did not match with the MD5sum from alpharev, so I was a bit scared to do it!
That is why I asked in here if someone knew why they don't match or if someone could make me mine.. I'd prefer to be able to make my own, however when the MD5sums don't match I'm not going to try it xD
If you really want to check to make sure your computer is generating good hboots, check the hexdump output and compare it with a known good one. For example, generate one with 100 MB system, 5 MB cache, then dump the hex and compare with the Oxygen r2 hboot from alpharev.nl, they should be identical apart from the label

Quoting Thalamus... So I guess the hexdump is the thing you need to check as the MD Sum will not work to verify if it works.

Hmm that makes a lot of sense I Overread I guess.. I just assumed that when you open the program it says to check the bravo_alpha, with the other program which you get by that rar file, and that I could do the same with the other Hboot's from alpharev website!
Other question will follow, I'm going to look it up anyways, how can I make a hexdump xD
Owh yeah and thanks kotag82! I'll try it tonight, just had a lot of tests at school :-/
I use an MDSum checker. There is one I use that I got from portableapps.com. Pretty useful if you quickly wanna check mdsums of roms, hboots and whatnot.
I figured it out, like stankyou sayd.. I did indeed had to compare them in a hex editor!
And everything has to be matching to let it be the same, I made a Hboot with the exact same label and partition layout and now the hex files between mine and the alpharev Hboot match I did it with a program called HxD hex editor, which I got from a tip of t-minik. With that program you can compare hex files from one file with hex files from another file!
Thanks everybody who helped!

Will do that ;-)
Anyways now the hboot works and that problem is solved.. I still got my IP adress issue! I really don't understand it :-/
The strange thing is when I use the exact same ROM with a stock Hboot everything just simply works! If I just knew where to find my problem.. I think it is in the updater script, because Coolexe used the cache as a partition, but I simply just don't know for sure..
Ok I feel really stupid right now! I made a partition of 215MB and everything just worked Even though the ROM booted with 210MB I think it didn't have enough room after all..
Is there some way to create a hboot with cache partition less than 5mb? The tool linked here only allows partition to be 5mb at minimum. I do not need cache at all because of scripts I'm using.

Your rom will use that cache partition, or your recovery. That's why it needs to be there.
Ok, but I suppose I could go down to 1 or 2mb, no?

Most roms use between 1-3MB of cache better to have slightly more
Plus are you really that desperate for a couple of MB? Lol

If you customise the rom to what you exactly need, then every MB makes a difference. Especially on JB.

UPDATE 17 Dec:
Download the new rootfs below for working WiFi! Thanks enatefox!
Download:
system.sqsh [ver 0.6.01]
Eclair-ready__rootfs.img (rename to rootfs.img, of course)
eclairhero.user.conf (goes on your SD card in /android/conf)
OR if you have a swap partition on your SD card: eclairhero-swap_partition.user.conf (goes on your SD card as /android/conf/eclairhero.user.conf)
And if you don't have them already:
zImage-15-12-09 (the latest kernel from 15 Dec)
startup.txt (My personal HaRET startup.txt)
rootfs changelog:
Copied /init.cfg/init.eclairhero.rc to /init.cfg/init.eclairhero.kaiser.rc
Copied /init.cfg/init.eclair.rc to /init.cfg/init.eclair.kaiser.rc
Altered init to check that media folder exists in /sdcard/android/media instead of /sdcard/media
Altered init to support eclair.user.conf and eclairhero.user.conf
TIPS:
You will need a fresh data partition/data.img for this build. Don't forget to back up your old one first!
Go straight to version 0.6.01 as posted above, version 0.6 gives me weird SIM errors.
This build takes FOREVER (5-10min) to boot. It goes through and even attempts to make a number of thumbnails for your images during first boot. I suggest watching it over adb so you'll know when it's settled and ready for input.
The HTC widgets are not working with this build.
TaskKiller is an absolute must, like other Hero builds this one loves to keep apps open.
Hmm, this build has successfully rebooted itself twice, during heavy use. I wish I knew how that worked, so we could get it to reboot on command!
Wifi not working D:
Also if I put 15-02-19, Haret asks for 11-12-09 (where can I find the latest haret?)
Why does it happen?
Almost downloaded Hero, just got vanilla Eclair to boot the first time. I'll look into wifi. Maybe it's me but Eclair seems faster than Donut but I haven't messed with it much. That should make Hero much nicer.. will post back when I get further

The startup.txt needs to be updated for the new zImage, or you can download my updated one from the first post.

Hero is very buggy, has too many problems to run daily for now. Overall Eclair Mike the fastest yet though! And the fonts are much better for qvga. Text autocomplete has issues.

Nah, don't worry, it was something really really stupid.
In the same file you said, it was like "zImage 11-12-09" so now I saved it saying just "zImage". Now works fine.
Waiting for wifi updates, great work guys!
BTW, is there any way to take screenshots?
damn bootloop. I'll look at this tomorrow but that's a promise . I don't know where these wifi files came from. I dropped in the ones that I've used and we'll see. Right now I'm fixing telnet and some other issues to post back with but it will take a little bit of time. We're going to get this working for daily use.
Here's working wifi for Eclair:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ezyzekjozj3
EDIT, I didn't get Hero to boot for me (looping) but I forgot to update Eclair Hero's conf file to match conf.eclair.kaiser.rc.. can someone either do that and repost or wait for me to finish some perm issues with it and I will upload one for Hero. Sorry about that.
I have got to be doing something wrong. I am using all of the files from the 1st post and the rootfs.img from enatefox's last post and this sat for 30 minutes. I even copied the user file to the sd card, to the /sdcard/CONF folder and into the /sdcard/Android/CONF folder and still it sits. I'll get a post of the last few lines up later to see if I just need to wait more or not. I am also using an empy 2GB Fat32 SD Card with the 1.71 radio. All other builds work but this one???
Any ideas?
I could mirror my files. They're working perfect, even wifi and etc (bluetooth not yet).

What do you mean, clean data.img, do I need a clean one already on the SDCard for 1st run, so none present?
FYI, your 'conf' and 'android' folders should be named in lowercase, if they aren't already.
The only way we can tell what is wrong is to see whatever the console says before it freezes, or ADB logs if you can make it that far. Post whatever you've got.

You need to have one of two things:
If you are using the partitioned SD method, you need a fresh ext2 partition (newly created with a partition manager, or wiped using the Android install script)
If you are using the data.img file method, just make sure there's no data.img on your SD so the installer can create one during boot.

I can almost guarantee you that the .conf file in your SD root and the .conf file in /android/ are ignored, try deleting them and just leave the .conf in the /conf/ directory. And yes, everything including the system.img/system.sqsh should go in the /android/ folder now.
I bet you can boot this Hero build, but it has a lot of bugs, you'll probably be happier with plain Eclair that rugalck linked.

hi peeps , ok i want to do the nand unlock (s-off)and have gone to the alpharev site i have read that you can do it via pc or you can download and flash via phone .. so i just wanted to ask if what im doing is right before i do it ..
ok so i downloaded the pb99img bravo oxygen ( i presume this is the right one as i have oxygen 2.0 rc6 ) or does that have nothing to do with it lol ... i have renamed it PB99IMG.zip.. do i now put on sd card reboot into bootloader/hboot whatever its called and flash it from there .. or am i totally wrong and need some super guidance lol
thanks for any reply's in advance
More reading, you are talking about flashing a different partition layout. Before you can do that you need to S-off. If the instructions on the AlphaRev site are not cleat to you i suggest you don't S-off until you understand what is on there.
This might get you started on how to S-off.
I would suggest using the 'CD method'. It's super, super easy and it takes just a few minutes.
It's as easy as this, and bingo you have S-OFF.

i used ImgBurn..
you can use CD or DVD
ok i installed imgburn ... sorry for all questions but if ya dont ask ya dont find out

or files folders to disk ??
then once done reboot pc and hold f12 , then something will come up like when you go into recovery /factory reset . then choose the file etc and send to usb ?????
you write the .ISO image to CD.
the download is immediately above the MD5 sum on the alpharev site.
check the MD5 sums as well before burning it.

It will give you a set of options, if you have a USB plugged in it will ask if you want to boot from that if you have an OS installed on it (I have Linux on a USB drive). Then it will ask you if you want to boot from CD, or the hard drive. Obviously you want to boot from the CD, it will load Linux, and auto install S-OFF to your phone.

Awesome. I'd suggest changing HBOOT table now. You can shuffle around the NAND and increase the space for installable apps, you can get anything from ~150 meg to ~350 megs depending on the OS installed.
lol whats hboot table ??? i only have apps with widgets saved to internal memory and i have a 750mb partition on my sd for apps

It allocates the system, cache and data partitions. By default a Sense ROM uses about 280megs of the internal ROM, and in contrast the Oxygen ROM I use uses about ~65Mbs, so you have ~210Mbs of unused space that can't be written to. The new HBOOT tables reconfigure the space so you can use the unneeded System space as Data which will give you an extra ~210Mbs for apps.
When I installed the Oxygen RC's I deleted my EXT3 partition on my SD card and just piled the apps on over to the phone.
oh ok mate . thanks but i really dont think im ever going to have millions of apps so im quite happy with just putting widget apps to internal and other to sd .. it will do for me as its not to technical lol

i was just reading over this again so does that mean for eg : on titanium backup it says at bottom internal 154mb (free 88mb) if i was to do this table thing would it then say internal 364 mb as its going to add approx 210mb and then free would be 276mb or something along those lines lol, or is it kind of like where you partition the sd its unseen but still using it ?

You will need to change the table back, it only gives you 90 something Mbs for Oxygen, and Sense is a good 250Mbs. It won't brick the device but you won't have a working OS I would guess as it would fail to load. As long as you had a nandroid of the AOSP ROM you could just restore, otherwise you'd have to factory reset to get it working again.
So I had rooted my Htc Evo 4g and I would try new ROM's maybe once a week or so... And than I flash a ROM and go to install some apps and I get a low memory warning. I used to have that problem with my Hero. I did the full wipe (everything 3x) and I was wondering why I would be low on memory after clearing everything? Is there something I'm missing, lol?!!
Are you using A2SD with an ext partition? And if so, are you wiping EXT as well? I know you said everything, just checking.
I have never had that problem, and I regularly have around 100 or so apps on my phone.
What roms are you trying? I have tried most roms on here, and almost all of them actually use LESS space then the stock rom, as they get rid of things you dont need.

What is and how do I check the recovery log? Sorry for the newb question, you'd think I'd know by now, lol!!!
By bad clusters I assume he means bad blocks. It sounds like parts of your memory have become damaged simply through normal use, its inevitable in all solid state memories. Supposedly some evos have been shipped with defects that cause lots of bad blocks. If your hardware version is 0003 or lower there's a chance yours was one.

Recovery.log is generated at /tmp/recovery.log whenever you do something in recovery. In recovery, if you go to advanced and then select report error it will copy that file to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log.
I doubt you'll find anything about bad blocks in that file. I just generated one and looked through it and the only thing about blocks that it says is "successfully wrote to block 0", which is just one block out of thousands. Its mostly technical things like what version of recovery you have, what radio your using things like that. It wouldn't hurt to look through it though. Some of it wont make sense, some will. Just look through line by line, it'll take like 5 minutes.

Is it possible to install Android on Kaiser without SD? Has anyone investigated bundling the /system partition with tinboot so the whole thing is installed with a single KAISIMG?
I ask because I have one Kaiser whose SD reader is broken. If I could install more than a kernel, I could try risky changes to fix the NAND driver. If I brick the phone or kill its flash, it's no big loss.
No, you can't do it now, maybe i can suggest you to look after a method do dump the nand after install and use it as kaiser image
Exactly what I was thinking, but how to negotiate the NAND into the proper size partitions? Write kernel for rom and hope you get the sizes right, or make a kernel that readjusts /system size based on install and leave remainder for /data?

I don't think thats l1q1d idea... perhaps a complete nand dump, and reflash it to another kaiser.
The kernel and partitions must be configures before the dump...
I do intend to try, but have been distracted by Scoot's very stable kernel, and a very nice pre-beta that I'm testing on my HTC Wizards, Gandalf and Radagast.
This is possible, in fact there was a time where an empty img file was being incorporated into the NBH where on a windows NBH the system files would normally be copied. A windows NBH consists of a number of parts, I can't remember what they are all called right now, but they can all be merged using NBHmerge. I can't give you specific instructions but there's no reason why it can't be done, not sure it'll be much fun though!

HTC Wizard. I have two of them, which I have named Radagast and Gandalf. It's my all-time favorite smartphone, although it is obviously even more obsolete than the Kaiser. I use one of them as my primary phone whenever Android is giving me fits. Right now I'm testing H3r7 beta 2 preview where the cook has adeptly squeezed WM6.5 into a tiny, fast, stable package.
If I knew that I wouldn't have given my Wizard away...
I thought Ham3r was finished when he hit 6.1 but I stand corrected...pfft.

please share for me : file androidinstall.tgz 2.1 or 2.2 but must run wifi and 3G.
Send for me by: [email protected] thanks i come from VietNam
I think with the proper memory map Android could be installed via FrankenKaiser or something of that sort. Something that addresses the NAND directly through OEMSBL, bypassing the need for a HardSPL. Of course the phone would have to be CID unlocked to do this, but I think it's possible to install via CustomRUU if the mapping was done beforehand.
I have read somewhere that NAND marked as bad in the map still gets "written" to, meaning whatever is supposed to go there is put there and never read. Once unmarked the written info comes back, but that requires a full format anyway.
I say very possible...
I have stopped trying to do this, but wanted to record my latest thoughts in case someone reads this in the future.
I think the best way to install Android on a Kaiser that can't read its sdcard is to edit the initrd then use recovery mode:
* install adbd so it gets started in recovery mode
* allow the menu when sdcard is not installed
* change scripts to look for /data/andboot
* change recovery mode to mount /data partition to usb
Then, of course, you boot the kernel, use the menu, enter recovery mode, transfer androidinstall.tgz and androidupdate.tgz to /data/andboot, then install system, install updates, clear data, and run. If something doesn't work, adb shell or adb push can help.
I think it's too much work to be worth it on this old phone.
Yeah..as the title says.. 3 weeks ago this hacker hacked into my network..
placed rootkits in all my 3 computers and then hacked its way to my Desire and my wifes iphone. good thing i had wireshark running same time.
So.. 5 units hacked with the method in like 1 houre. Bad luck for me i guess.
And kaspersky didnt give me any warnings at all. bye bye kaspersky.
Anyway... i flashed my desire's HBOOT just to be sure. after i did a check with "AutoKiller Memory Optimizer" all kinds of malware services was attached to most of my apps.
1- downgraded HBOOT
2- flashed stock HBOOT from alpharev
3- Changed recovery from CWM to 4EXT as i suspected the recovery being infected somehow.
I checkd my log... the hacker had removed some files and moved shell files from an folder to another as well as busybox and so on. it was so many i thought il be better of installing new ROM.
I tried with Gingervillain first... everything installed fine..
checking with "root explorer" i see same files that had been moved and added was still there.
OK.. i tried again..
full wipe with 4ext and then installed Runnymede.. still.. when i check my root partition most of the files still there and i get same results doing a root check.
any idees...? im not sure if my kernel is right. it should be, when i installed Runnymede. when checking kernel v.
it says.. "[email protected] #11"
May be kernel rootkit? does the kernel start before recovery?
can someone plz confirm this?
baseband seem to be the same
any advise as for how to start from scratch will be much appreciated.

Full wipe wipes /cache, /data and /sd-ext to my knowledge. There is a possibility some of the files remain on /system. Use 4EXT to manually format each partition using format option.

That seems in order. Long name in attach marks modules added to that kernel.

Ok
well.. i did the format manually in 4EXT.
I suspect some files still to be there..also some boot files containing malware script.
what file contains the boot script? i mean.. what file is the first to be triggered when booting in HBOOT. because many things in the recovery doesnt seem right. and the hboot fastrecovery starts with a delay.
Like when i want to partition or when i want to format all partitions except sd. Acts like it doesnt want to.
Anyway.. was just wondering if i could just adb and delete every file folder that is in in my phone and then flash recovery and ROM again.
Is that what RUU does?
is that something to recomend?
RUU is complete wipe of everything. /system, /hboot etc.
Download the correct one for your phone, *follow its instructions* (may need a gold card - google it) and run it on a clean pc.
Clean your pc ie format and reinstall after taking backups.
Then start again wit ha new hboot/rom setup.
Is that even possible? Infecting an Android phone via a Wi-fi network?
And Recovery shouldn't be able to get infected. I think ONLY /data can, and eventually /system if it's mounted as RW.
But on a wipe data gets deleted, and on a ROM install /system and boot (which holds the kernel and ramdisk) is deleted anyway.
RADIO starts before HBOOT. And there's absolutely no way they can be infected.
To be safe:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery *OVERKILL*
Then just do fastboot flash recovery {RECOVERY}
And there's nothing more you must do. HBOOT reflashing is 100% pointless.
Maybe top-notch hackers are shifting their interest from hacking NASA, FBI and similar organizations in the US to hacking Android phones. Or maybe it's one of their favourite ways to have fun in their idle time. Who knows?
Anyways, here's a Thanks from me, mr. Andrei, for your contribution to this community.

I do what i can. There are many devs that know much more than me. Your thanks are appreciated
For me it's still strange, tho. Only data and system could be "infected"
Take a look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399076
It's a scheme i made on how HTC and Nexus devices work. (How they boot, what are the individual partitions, etc)
