Best partitioning for a HTC Desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a rooted Desire with CM7. I will use ROM manager + ClockworkMod recovery to partition my mobile. 32 GB scandisk class 4 (I want for Ap2SD mostly)
The settings which I followed are:
Swap = 64
Ext3 = 2048
Fat32 = Remainder
Is it good configuration?
Also this video at youtube . com / watch?v=M3RMJdpfHIc (I cant post links yet) explains with simple steps (and with an annoying voice) the process which you have to follow.
I know there are a lot of posts around but I didnt find any straightforward. Please inform me if I have to change anything in my configuration.
Thank you
Cheers.

Use GParted on Windows or 4EXT Recovery on your phone to partition.
Swap=0 (most if not all roms have it like this)
EXT= 4ext is better (1-2GB most of the time 1GB is enough)
Fat32 = Remainder

depends which rom you want to use, read OP for rom they will usually recommend partion sizes..alot say 1gb to 1.5GB for ext4 or can cause problems

Thank you very much for helping,
do you have any link for the cyanogenmod 7 partition sizes?
Cheers

Do you mean HBoot partition sizes? Alpharev.nl is the site you ought to visit for that.

For Cyanogenmod 7 there is no need to partition your SD card with an EXT4 size, because it does not support scripts like A2SD+ officially. If you want to use it anyway, you will find a guide in thread for Cyanogenmod.

I've tried a lot of different roms and with 1 Gb Ext and the rest Fat32 I've never had problem

I would definitely use 4EXT Recovery for partitioning your SD card. WAAAAAYYYYY easier than using gparted or anything else. And it'll automatically align your partitions & format them correctly. You probably won't even want to go back to Clockwork Mod recovery after using it. You can download the 4EXT Recovery Control app from the Market, and install the latest touch recovery.

You need an EXT partition to get leedroid working. Follow installation guide posted in leedroid's rom thread.

Me too, same problem here. But I've partition my 8GB sd card, with 512MB of EXT4...

You need stock hboot to flash the a2sd version.

How did you partition your sd card? Should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery only. I would also recommend 1GB ext4 as I believe some of the ext space is used for the rom.
Read the last few pages of that thread, I linked an faq for that rom, very useful.
Ext3 1GB is recommended and if u use ext4 u have to manually mount it before installing rom or some add ons.

good point, ext4 is supported and in theory is slightly better/faster, but doubt it will make much difference. manually mounting it is not difficult from recovery though.
@rosgani, up to you whether you choose ext3 or ext4, more important that the partitions are created properly with gparted or 4ext recovery.
if you stick with ext4, try mounting ext partition manually in recovery (in advanced menu i think somewhere) before installing.
also here is the FAQ, i found it very useful when i last use that rom a while back.

Thats a wonderful FAQ back then but i think some people dont want to read infos rather they take serious actions, even they don't read OP. Otherwise this thread wouldn't been born.

Partition questions and sd specs.

Please direct me to an idiots guide to SD partitioning...
I have been flashing my desire since the summer. And well i forgot how i initially setup my SD card.
I wanted to treat my self to a new CLASS 10 SD card. But when it came to partitioning the card i got lost.
Is it as simple as using clockworkmod to set partition size to 1-2Gigs? and swap to 0?
With reference to Ext2,ext3 and ext4 are these all multiple partitions? None of these where options within clockwork or rom manager
Anyway i did my partitions using clockwork and installed a new rom i had never used before runnymede. I found performance extremely sluggish and slow. Of course i did 3 new things at once. new card, new partition and new rom... could be one or all these causing me headaches..
Sorry to ramble on. Bottom line:
- Could i be kindly directed to a SD partitioning guide?
- Is the Desire compatible with 2,4, and 10?

hope it helps.
The class 10 SD card should be OK with your desire.
The people in the know mostly recommend not using ROM Manager to partition SD cards. I would suggest try using GParted.
In terms of ext2, 3, 4 - I would recommend ext 3 for your SD card partition - it is safer than ext 2 partitions.
I would suggest an ext 3 partition size of 1024mb or even 2048mb (that should cover you for most present roms and most future roms).
I am not as knowledgeable as some of the other guys here but I will give you an useful link:
http://www.techcredo.com/android/tu...-for-a2sd-with-gparted-on-a-windows-pc-ext234
I usually create a bootable GParted USB drive and use to partition my SD cards.
I hope that helps,
KKH
I have been trying to create an ext4 partition using GParted. I did all necessary steps - will quickly run thru, just so you know:
1. Burnt ISO and accessed thru boot menu (running XP/SP3, btw)
2. Deleted existing allocation.
3. Created new primary partition as FAT32
4. Allocated "free space following" as 1024
5. Specified the unallocated memory (1024) as ext4.
There was no error in the operation.
However... When I tried to load stuff to the SD card, Windows prompted me to format the card before using. It made no sense but I couldn't do anything. And by formatting it, I lost everything that GPL had done in the first place.
I went over the process again, to no avail.
Does anyone know where I've possibly gone wrong? Please help.
Which recovery are you using?
I had the same issue, vista kept asking me to format SD card before use.
I fixed this by making my first partition in GParted the fat32 and the second partition ext3.
I think windows accesses the first partition by default and is happy with fat32.
If your ext4 was the first partition, windows would ask to format that ext4 in to fat32 before use.
I hope that helps.
thanks i should be good to go now..

If you install 4EXT Recovery, you won't ever need a bootable disk to partition your SD card. You'll be able to do it straight from recovery I suggest you to give it a try!
My recovery is 4ext and I used this recovery to make partitions of my class10 sd card.
I also use this recovery to align my partitions.
You can also use the freeware "minitool partition wizard" under win xp instead of gparted.
Good luck.

If the OP uses this tool, he needs more than good luck. It's like rootSU says in his sig: "Don't be lazy and make GParted your first choice...". So please do not trust in windows software which wants to handle linux partitions.

No problem. Do not forget to use the thanks-button.
Either with as already GParted or recovery. Recommended recoveries are 4EXT or RMD.
I am familiar with Gparted and Easeus in Windows, but I do not know which format I should hold for CM7.1
- 1 Gig ext 3 or 4?
- 500mb swap?
- The rest fat32
(this is what i had with succes for my previous MIUI rom)
OK.. i created with MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.0 (freeware):
13.7 GB FAT32
1.1 GB Ext4
102 MB Linux Swap
Still only 106 MB internal memory left..
What am i doing wrong??
I'm using "update-cm-7.1.0-Desire-signed.zip" straight from the CM website.
...I almost start to think that A2SD is not supported...
Firstly, NEVER EVER partition your SD card MiniTool Partition Wizard!! Use GParted or your recovery.
Secondly, CM7 does not officially support A2SD. You have to flash darktremor's A2SD-script (can be found in CM7-thread here on XDA) in recovery use a2sdGUI from Android Market.
Thirdly, to get full use of CM7 I recommend to go S-OFF and flash CM7r2 Hboot.
Just flash it via recovery. no need of s-off.

Not for now, me being a newbee.
Maybe later when i see the advantages.
Can you tell me what you mean by "to get full use of CM7 I recommend to go S-OFF and flash CM7r2 Hboot"
CM7 along with many of the AOSP ROMs is smaller than sense ROMs. Therefore if you are s -off you can flash a custom hboot Which will reduce the size of your system partition & increase the size of your data partition.
Although many ROMs support apps to ext partitions only a few will move data to the sd partition. By changing the hboot you can make use of the space created by a smaller ROM.

CM7 only needs less than 145 MB on /system partition (I am talking about the desire's internal memory, which usually has this partiton layout: 250 MB /system, 40 MB /cache and 145 MB /data) and only 5 MB for /cache. So by using stock hboot with CM7 you would waste nearly 140 MB space for installing apps. Not very useful, isn't it. So with the CM7r2 Hboot you would get full use of Cyanogenmod.
But beware. You cannot flash the radio via recovery now, because the cache-partition is too small. So you have to do it via fastboot. It may sound scary, but if you are very careful and search better too much than too little and ask if you are completely unsure, nothing can happen. Futhermore, you will find much guides here on XDA which will help you.

[Q] Problem with Space Internal

Hi,
I have a HTC Desire with Cyanogenmod 7.1(Hboot 0.93.001) and my problem is the internale Space. I would partition with ROM Manager(5.006) but when I partition SD(256 Mb Ext4 and 0 Swap) reboot the system and I have a error
The log is:
"can't open /dev/tty0: No such file or directory
framebuffer: fd 3 (480 x 800)
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.7
I:Set boot command "boot-recovery"
Command: "/sbin/recovery"
Can you help me??
Tks
Try 4Ext recovery. It does best partitions, it does best all.
I presume that you repartitioned your sdcard after instalation of the rom.
If so there is 99% chance that you destroyd app data and/or user settings(I don't know which scripd did you use) and something else. EXT partition has to be made before flashing the rom and must not be tempered after(except if you backup EXT pt. data and restore it on the new partition).
Have to disapoint you - There is no help for that, so to fix a problem you either need to restore backup or reinstall(reflash) ROM.
Next time befor you do something like that be sure to RTFM or google for things that you want to make or change.
Many of the custom ROMs that are available use scripts and SDcard partitions as a workaround for the lack of internal space that Desire has. Almost all of the ROM have instructions(especially on this forum) how to install/flash rom. I strongly recomend that you read it and try to understand it If you ever encounter problems feel free to PM.

waaaayyyyy too much, you're wasting SD-Card spsce, you'll never use it unless you install the entire Play Store.
Also, using simple apps/data 2sd (leaving dalvic on nand) makes it a lot more stable IMO, not to mention better speed.
32gb class10 i think its have no memory Problems. And i think its fast and stable
if you're using CM7, you should use S2E. It's very easy to use.
Freespace should give you an idea on how much space you have left.
I have 1.5GB of sd-ext space. Used about 370MB
Internal storage is 102.8/147.6
Link2SD is my choice. I only use for games and very large apps.

Don't use ROM Manager - remove it, stay away from it, you don't need it. Would still recommend Gparted to partition sd card, although 4Ext recovery does seem to work but you'll need to be S-off to flash it.

100% agree, ive used both 4EXT and Gparted in past both ideal IMO. Class 4 16GB SD with 1GB ext4, works flawlessly with all roms i have tried.
also it's sometimes useful to have an ultra large sdext. Example would be using botbrew or compiling things onboard. My sdext is at 1.2gb used now

How do i get 4Ext recovery? In play store?
Hello all,
I am under 10 posts so I can not write in Desire Android Development.
I have "MildWild v-3.9" and I am very happy with this ROM. But I have problems of low free space. However, I created a Ext4 partition of 1 Go with 4Ext Recovery. I have HBOOT CM7 r2.
In settings, I see I have 8.6 MB free space for internal storage, 480Mo of space available for the SD card and it says "not available" for SD-Ext.
What's the problem?
All this on my SD card 4GB. I also have a 16GB SD card and I have another question. If I made partitions like the other and I copy the entire contents of the SD card of 4GB on the 16GB, I would have no problem?
Thank you in advance and sorry for my bad English.

- nandroid backup with your 4GB card inserted
- partition your 16GB in the same way
- copy everything from your 4GB card to your 16GB card (this will also copy the nandroid backup)
- insert 16GB card into phone, boot into recovery.
- full wipe and nandroid restore.

[Q] Cant sign to google account

First of all sorry to disdurb anyone with my issue, but tried everything and nothing works for me so I am kind of desperate here.
Well I am an owner of an HTC Desire (GSM) and had problem with low internal memory so I googled and found out a method to extend my internal memory to 2GB . I installed revolutionary which makes the phone S-OFF and installs clockworkmod I guess. Then downloaded the Cyanmodgen (cm-7.2.0.1-bravo.zip) also downloaded the Data2SDinstalerv1.3_GB.zip. I partioned a 8 GB SD Kingston microSD card to 4GB FAT32 and 4GB ext4 using Gparted. Installed everything with this order in recovery mod from the FAT32. Everything work perfectly. I also didnt touch the google apps at all and downloaded the latest version from goo.im (gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip) and only after that tried to sign in to my google account. But it seems that I cant sign in. It keep telling me I entered the wrong e-mail and password. The e-mail and password works just fine with a pc but dont work with the HTC desire. I am guessing that the google apps from the goo.im are an old version that wont work ? What wrong I am doing? There is something like a code bar I am seeing everywhere I search for a solution. What is this that for and what do I do with it?
Please help cause right now I cant sign to my google acount therefore no google play and all the rest google stuff for me.
4gb ext4 is too big. Should be 1-1.5gb max. Install 4ext recovery. Its much better. Repartition your SD card, wipe everything and re-install. Should work fine.

That is the md5 checksum. Once you've downloaded something you can look at it's md5. If it is the same as what is shown on the download site it means that the file has been downloaded properly. If not, it means that the file has been corrupted somehow and that you should redownload it.

Your recovery has got nothing to do with your signing into Google account.
I recommended 4ext recovery to partition your card correctly with 1-1.5gb of ext4 partition size.
When you install 4ext recovery from the app (search for the apk here), it will overwrite the existing clockworkmod recovery.

I have partioned a 16 GB class10 SanDisk SD card with GParted to 13GB fat32 and to 1,5 GB ext4 volumes.
I am kind of desperate here every ROM I use it ends up crashing. What I mean is I install the rom but when I am using the phone I am getting lots lots of failure message or phone reboot by itself or stop responding at all . Application this stopped responding and aplication that stopped responding.
I finally kind of making progress with the Supernova version but some issues also there programs crashing but less times and a sign saying my SD card has only read properties something like that.
Should I do a partion with the ext4 recovery programm from my phone? Can this be the problem? If so is there a quide for that?

Yes. Gparted is known to have issues with the desire partitioning. There's a good guide in the stickies (you'll have to look) but basically flash 4ext recovery, reboot to recovery and remove all partitions and start again. 1st partition 1 or 1.5 gb (not 3, or 5...) rest fat 32. Wipe everything and install your Rom of choice .
