It seems I made the mistake of applying the last OA update. Which means no root. On the other hand, I need root edit gps.conf file, for a better gps fix.
After spending some time reading I found a way to downgrade - not sure if I will apply it, it seems a new update is coming.
Anyway, my question is - what is the difference between reset to factory default. Does it return my phone to the state I had it when I bought it, or just whipes all personal info without downgrading. I don't want to loose any data doing a reset, and now quite sure what the downsides of downgrading using the method described in ROM dev section. I am a but of a noob on Android topic, too... that is why I had to ask
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
very interested to know this myself - ive got a desire on telstra running:
2.26.841.2 and hboot 0.93.0001
iv tried just about every method out there to root it but no success (though i have come close)
i also have a gold card
if i go back to factory will i be able to root, and what is the best way to root his phone?
failing that - does anyone know anyone who can?
many thanks in advance
Factory reset wipes all the user data, it will not downgrade the ROM. So i'm afraid to get root you are going to have to downgrade as per instructions here

so does that guide work for the normal desire or just the desire hd?
sorted
ok sorted it all out and rooted my phone finally
having the phone completely up to date beforehand was probably the biggest hinderance
so in summary for anyone else in my (former) situation i can offer the following advice:
1. download downgrader from http://www.multiupload.com/CFAR720K5P and extract to readily accesible folder
2. copy PB99IMG.zip to sdcard (mine's 8gb kingston, had about 3gb of other stuff on there)
3. make a gold card as per http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=573866 up to the recovery step. i used the same card as above
4. run the win-down.bat file and follow all instructions (phone should now be running hboot 0.83)
5. remove the files you put in the sd cards root
6. download and run unrevoked3 (whatever version is 28,069KB)
7, you should be all sorted
you may find youself turning the phone on and off and and switching cards heaps, i found it useful to shuffle files around by selecting 'mount phone as disk drive' to move the files i needed, and then revert to charge only afterwards.
to arrive at this solution took me fn ages so i hope im helping another noob out there somewhere. experts are invited to shoot holes in my method.
many thanks to muskie for his passive assistance
Hi,
I made the mistake of upgarading to 1.83 =(
now i cant even temproot with visionary+
anyone help me out?
also, i have lots of apps installed, some which are games i have hours of progress in. is there any way i can get my root back ? other than downgrade?
and if downgrade is the only option, can i do it without even temproot? and how can i restore my apps alongwith their data ?
its a lot of questions, but i thought this is the best place for it =)
You are one of the first ones with 1.83 who want to downgrade, could you try my downgrade guide? You can find a link to it in the sticky roll up thread. It should work.
well i wouldnt want to downgrade, only thing is i cant root it. previously i was rooted with visionary (upto about 5 days ago when i made the stupid mistake). Is their an alternate method to root which works on 1.83 that i am not aware of ? (as you said i am the first one with 1.83 asking for it)
I already have your downgrade guide almost memorized, all the tools are downloaded etc. but i would appreciate if you could help me answer the remaining questions regarding apps and app data (game progress mainly)
there is mybackup pro, but it only takes apk+data if you are rooted. any ideas even just to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated. done a lot of research but still stumped =(

No, there is no way to root any of the latest firmwares, as things stand there is, as far as i know, no one working on root exploits on the latest firmwares because there is a straight forward method to downgrade. As regarding backup solutions i can't help you I'm afraid as I have root.
I know only my backup pro for backuping non-rooted phones. And that is right, there is no method to properly root new builds, you need to downgrade first.
hi, im new to this forum and new to android os.
i dont see root access something as a must have on your phone put i need it to fix my compass.
now, i cant find how to root htc wildfire running on froyo. i found that it was dificult before, and that its even more difficult now .
i tried using softroot.apk, but nothing happened.
i jut need temporary root so i can delete system compass calibration files, reboot the phone and get my compass working again (always pointing to west, randomly turning around, and after 5minutes of swinging phone in all directions it gets working again (but just until the screen goes of, then i need to do everything again)).
can someone please help me?
ps i got adb working, and a really searched how to fix compass a whole week now, and everything points back to rooting the phone.

You can't root Wildfire Froyo at the moment.
You'lll have to wait as we all are. There is no way.
and how is the development of the rooting going at the moment? some news on the progress (i mean are developers working on it and how long do they think it will take?).
and if i cant root it, is there another way of fixing the compass problem?

There is no news since first days of January, when Unrevoked said they were working on it. No updates since then.
A method has been "discovered" or I don't know how to say, which is a tool called XCT Clip, which costs around 200$ and some unlock shop would have and you can unlock for let's say 20$, but nothing certain. You may find some place which has it, but would be by casuality...
So... nothing you can do at home, unless you want to pay that money (if you can spend the money just for root it, just buy another phone)
EDIT: I know nothing specific about the compass...
this phone is still new, that the problem.
this is the mail i (tried but failed to) sent to htc about the compass problem, just a copy paste.
*******************
i found a permanent fix to this on the web after a few hours of research, but i requires root access and i dont have that (i dont see the point of it and ill loos my warranty). it requires me to delete operating system calibration data from the magnetometer chip, and that makes sense. the chip is sending good data, but the phone dosent know how to interpret it when it loads those files only because applications that use compass (something like google maps for example).
im sending an *.txt attachment with the procedure how to fix that, please at least read the part under number 7 and 8.
the files with ak8973 in the name are system files what are used for the compass applications and correspond to the magnetometer chip (chp model is ak8973, im sending the datasheet so you can confirm).
now, the problem is root excess and my lack of knowledge about the android system and root commands. as i said, i dont see the point of rooting the phone and i dont want to do that, but every time i found someone who successfully fixed the compass glitch it was when they did this procedure.
it would be great if htc made a software update at least for this part, because many people have this problem.
*******************
ive found the magnetometer datasheet and all the data required for this procedure, but i cant get root excess so i can fix the problem.
well, as already said above: everybody is waiting for an update of unrevoked
actually there is another tool announced here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794421
neither AlphaRev (thread above, website here: http://alpharev.nl/) or Unrevoked are finished yet
AlphaRev 1.80 said:
To be supported devices in version 2.0 (in no particular order):
HTC Aria GSM (Liberty)
HTC Wildfire GSM (Buzz)
HTC Desire CDMA (BravoC) - enabling fastboot in addition to S-OFF

all in all we need to wait untill they are finished with one click rooting.. ok thanks for all the info .
psneuter
you can try and use psneuter from the attached file
adb push the contents in the folder in the zip to /data/local/tmp
then chmod 777 those two files and you will have shell root
but you will have to remount system as rw

That worked, I've got root in shell now. But if we're root in terminal, isn't it easy to gain root access to all applications?
It's possible to start an application by terminal, so if we'd start an application that can get us permanent root access it should work.
i accessed shell root using superoneclick, that was enough to remove some files so the compass starts working againe.
superoneclick is really great at that .
just one more question, after temporary rooting the shell, do i lose my warantiy? i mean, if something happens, can they see in the service that i rooted the shell before?
Doesn't think so. If so, just use RUU or do factory reset before going to service.
friend you said it work please tell me. how can do it.. ?
Any news? Has the crack come out? Geez, this has been a looooong wait!
someone in the above posts included alpharev in rooting. thats wrong. alpharev is completely different.
-----unrevoked software roots ur phone (with older hboot) and installs a "custom recovery" , so that u can install custom roms. And unrevoked is not compatible with the newer froyo wildfires with hboot 1.01 untill now.
-----then coming to alpharev, this is an entirely different tool which works only on rooted devices. It turns the security flag on ur device to S-OFF so that u can access additional features. For a wildfire to work with alpharev, it should be rooted with the above unrevoked software. As far as today's date is concerned, this alpharev is not compatible with any wildfire. And the about to be released "alpharev2" will become compatible with older rooted wildfires with hboot 0.80. I dont know its compatibility with newer hboot.
And i can also say one thing. As far now, no one has successfully used ROOT ONLY APPS by any process on froyo wildfire hboot 1.01 (correct me if im wrong)
AND COMING TO UR COMPASS ISSUE:
(someone correct me if im wrong)
so, u wanted to delete the system compass calibration files (system rom files) with a file explorer. U meant to do temporary root for this purpose. I dont know whether it will be possible or not with a temp root.
ok. then trying to solve the issue. ok. u were saying that the compass issue is with all the apps which use the compass like google maps etc., . if it is so, have u done the FORCE STOP, CLEAR DATA, CLEAR CACHE, CLEAR DEFAULTS in the settings / applications / manage applications / all compass apps. I expect the compass calibration data lies here and will be deleted by doing this. I dont know whether this solves ur problem. but have a try. and try to download some fresh compass apps frm the market and check if the issue is with every app.
regarding ur question whether temporary root voids warranty or not, the answer will be NO. it retains warranty (only 90 % sure)
I THINK , YOUR COMPASS ISSUE IS NOT RELATED BY ANY MEANS TO ROOTING.
can say one thing. if it is a software issue, then "factory reset" should solve any problem.
there is a good news..Sebastian Krahmer has released the new exploit for android 2.3.3 and 3.0, bet the new unrevoked is coming soon

unfortunately there is no temp. root for htc wildfire
by the way what temproot gives ? what use of it ?
Hi guys, I would like to access my /data/ folder inorder to import some save game states but have not rooted my device.
I am currently happy sitting on my stock rom, as tbh im alittle worried about bricking my handset which Ive had it since launch week, unbranded unlocked from t-mob uk.
I was wondering if there is still a way for me to temp root or just be able to access my data folder without perma rooting so i can swap a few files around whilst running 1.72?
thanks =)
You can't root 1.72, not easily atleast. You'll have to downgrade.
i saw in the faq that rooting my version would be difficult but was wondering if there was another way to alter files in the /data/data folders

Hi,
I hope this is not asked before.
This is my situation - I am going to move from DZ to another Android phone. I understand that Titanium Backup can do all the backup and it needs root. In fact I have my phone rooted and Titanium Backup in it, but now TB says it cannot obtain the root privilege. But on the other hand, if I try to temproot using VISIONary+, it says my phone is rooted. Last year my phone was upgraded to Gingerbread via OTA, I am not sure if this is the cause.
Now I just want a single shot of root to get TB work once and that's it. I understand I cannot root 2.3.x directly and have to downgrade to Froyo first. Is there any alternative? Also, it seems to be a dead-loop question - before rooting I need to backup all the things, but without rooting I cannot get TB to work. Other apps like MyBackup Pro can do most of the thing but it cannot save apps data.
Hope my questions are not so clumsy.
If you look at this guide there is a way to get full temp-root (Titianium Backup working) on gingerbread.

Hi Nipqer.
Thank you, yes I also notice this tutorial. Should I go through 1) to 3), 1) and 3) only or only 3)? I suppose I don't need to do 4) right?
Just 1 and 3 to run Titanium.
