[Q] Multiboot - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any multiboot available for the SE Xperia Play?
I would like to have CM7.2 as default and use the multiboot to test CM9...

They need different kernels and the only way you can change a kernel is through Fastboot. Thus, you can't do that.

So if I want to test another rom, I have to do a nand backup with CWM, flash the new rom and to restore, I have to do a restore of my backup with CMW??

Yes sir. And of course mind the kernel you're using. The CM9 kernel is not compatible with CM7 roms and vice versa.

Yes, new framework was introduced in ICS meaning the ramdisk needed to be updated, and ramdisk goes with kernel into boot.img. The only way we can flash to the boot partition is through fastboot.

Switch Kernels in Roms

In flashing roms, I notice that devs are including kernels in the .zip. It appears each dev has their favorites. Without debating which kernel is the "best", my question is can I switch a Zimage (which I assume is the kernel) with another of my liking? Or, if I'm running a particular kernel of my liking, can I flash the Rom without the included Zimage?

You should be able to flash a kernel, either through CWM or ODIN without problem.

I realize that. My question was in reference to flashing a rom (which all have a kernel included). Can you switch the Zimage inside the rom .zip prior to flashing...or can I just delete the Zimage inside the rom and flash it without one? I'm trying to avoid the two steps of flashing a rom, then flashing a kernel I prefer.
Ah, I've always just flashed the ROM, then flashed the kernel then rebooted out of CWM. Be nice if there was a utility where you give it kernel and rom and tell it to go, might be a nice feature for ROM Manager to add.

[Q] Stuck at bootscreen! HELP!

hello all!
i am trying out new roms on my xperia arc. its rooted, bootloader unlocked. i successfully tried cm7. anyway, now i am switching to xperia mod. i have the latest doom kernel, i flash the rom, restart from cwm and then the device is simply stuck at bootscreen [where is android wearing assassin clothes ] factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, all done. i dont know where i am lagging! facing same issue in arconium too! the original one, stock rom, works perfect!
Flash correct Kernel.
Than wipe all another time.
Get boot.img in .zip file, extract, and flash it from flashboot.

sorry mate, i am not getting this exactly what you mean. please be little more clear?
also i already tried reflashing the kernel through
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
after installing the rom and facing the issue. still no way!
1-You have tried to flash a kernel wich not supports stock .62 rom based, in this case you have to take the correct kernel (ex. doomkernel v18 for stock) and flash it by fastboot.
Doomkernel for CM7 is different from Doomkernel for stock.
If you were on doomkernel for CM7 with CM7 rom previously, now you have to switch on doomkernel for stock to install and make functional a stock based rom like Xperia Mod
OR
2-You are on the correct Doomkernel but you have to install the 1,6Ghz version for the devices that have boot issue with 2 Ghz version (as my phone), look at the Doomkernel's thread.

Thankyou very much for your reply.
1. I have the latest doomkernel v18 only. and yeah, the one for stock rom! i am running the stock rom on it.
2. I havent tried this. i am using 2ghz one. will give a shot to 1,6ghz one. but xperia mod or arconium is giving the same bootloop on stock kernel too!
Also my current stock rom is .48 build. does this has something to do with any of this?
Flash the boot.img file which you will get in the ROM original Zip file.
Usually DoomKernel works with all but its buggy with a *Few* Roms.....
So try flashing the kernel provided in the zip

There is no rom provided in the zip. Its written on its description page that it works best with doom kernel!

I tried 1,6 ghz one just now! same bootloop exists!
Flash with this doomkernel = http://doomlord.sylvester20007.com/xperia_2011/miui/arc_arcs/dk-v02-high/boot.img
@all, thank you all for support! i retried with 1,6ghz doomlord kernel. very first try this didnt work. i tried again, this time, before and after flashing of rom, i cleared cache, wiped data, factory reset and dalvik cache too! and whoa! worked! i am loving it all! thank you all for replies!

Do I need a custom ROM to use a custom kernel?

Title says it all, really. I want to try custom kernels, but I am not sure if I need a custom ROM to do that, or if I can just flash them with a stock ROM
You can use stock.

It depends.
You can run a custom kernel on the stock Rom, but you may be missing out without init.d support the stock Rom doesn't offer.
If you use a kernel with init.d script tweaks you should use a custom rom with support added. I know there are some very stock looking roms out there.

I ran Trinity on stock for a while. Worked great.
One more question about this:
To flash a custom kernel (specifically Franco kernel), do I just flash the small zip in CWM or the like? Also, if I want to back to 100% stock, can I just flash boot.img in fastboot mode, or will their be residual files? (I have a nandroid if I cannot do this)
Yes, flash the .zip using a custom recovery. When you flash a custom kernel, the update package may do more than just flash the kernel itself. So if you flash stock kernel (boot.img) back using fastboot, this doesn't have to be enough to fully return to the pre-custom kernel state. Restoring a nandroid will certainly do that, of course.
When you are willing to spend a few bucks, most popular kernels can be flashed using their control apps available in the play store. I know Franco's updater app allows you to fully backup the stock kernel + files before you flash a franco.kernel, and allows you to restore these backups.

How to backup kerel only?

Hello, as most of you probably already know, new kernel sources have been released by HTC. This leads to some kernel developement and here comes my question : how can I backup kernel only? I tried two different kernels for viper rom by far and both killed my wifi and radio connection. Of course I did full TWRP backup so I could easily restore. But here comes my question : is there any way to backup kernel only? Backing up entire device is long procedure and image takes about 1 GB of precious memory. I tried to backup boot only partition but with no luck. Any other suggestions?
Use the new venom flasher ! Its a kernel flash tool, download it from the OP's of the viperx thread
No need to back it up....just run the tool and select stock kernel
Thank you. It's not exatcly perfect solution, but still it works fine for now. At least as long as I stick to Viper
?
can i use this for 4.1.1 stock rom?
i need stock kernel 3.1.1.0 base on 3.14.401.31

ROM's and kernels

I came from a Droid X2 that had a locked bootloader. All the ROM's for it didn't change the kernel and the ROM had to be on a certain kernel to function properly.
My question is do the ROM's on Galaxy nexus come with kernel when you flash them or do you need to be on a certain kernel first or flash a kernel With the ROM while still in recovery.
The ROM I'm looking at doesn't say anything about what kernel to be on so I assume it comes with one.
Thanks,
Troy

No need to flash a custom kernel unless you want to, or unless the directions for that specific ROM instruct you to. Personally I found that my device performs better if I stay with the packaged kernel and not flash a different kernel after flashing a ROM. But others have had different results with different kernels. I would recommend sticking with the kernel packaged with your ROM to start with, that way you would know how it should perform. Then if you flash a new kernel in the future, if you start having an issue you would know it could be due to the custom kernel and not the ROM.

Some come with a kernel some do not....and there's no need to wipe cache or dalvik when flashing a kernel (as per Mr imoyseon himself)....flashing a kernel could cause a boot loop when its not compatible so just take your battery out and reflash a different one....just try some out and make sure you read allllllll of the OP whenever you flash anything
