Google voice - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

What are your experiences with Google voice? I've heard it drains the battery. I also heard it can cause duplicate messages. Thoughts, comments?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Drains the battery any more than other programs, no. Double messages, it depends on how you set it up. I set it up the old way of keeping everything separate. I don't integrate google voice into sprint. I have a sprint number and a google voice number. I don't use sprint for voicemail. I set the phone to conditional call forward to google voice for their voicemail if I don't answer my phone.

I am integrated and have no issues at all. Battery doesn't seem affected at all, the Doble notifications stopped with the most recent update, and I can check my voice mails and texts from any computer (excluding mms)

You can't receive MMS on Google Voice.
@topic, nope. Always worked fine for me.

I also have A Free Sprint to Home(GV#) add-on on my 500 Minute SERO plan. So all calls to and from my cell using GV# don't go against my minutes!!

Sure you can. Well, sort of. Now you get an SMS that alerts you to an MMS in your Gmail. Better, if you ask me.

Do you need to do anything to enable mms in gmail or is it automatic? I know when I had google voice, that didn't work.

you can set the google voice app to only alert on voicemail and receive sms/mms through the regular messaging app (or chomp or whatever). I don't use the app for texts, but I guess some people

Just for users of other phones who happen to wander into this thread, I believe this only applies to phones on Sprint (unless google rolled it out quietly).

Yes, it is due to Sprint and Google working together on integration, I believe. No, you don't have to do anything special.

Google voice for text

So I'm getting rid of sms on my plan and switching to google voice for text and calls. I'm wondering if there is a way to forward google voice texts through the stock sms app or something like go sms or handsent. The voice interface just kinda sucks and be nice to use something more full featured.

Nope, there's no way to use Google Voice on a stock messaging app. The only way for it to show is to send sms to your original number... which you obviously don't want to do.
I was. Looking in the google voice settings and found an option to send texts through the stock messaging app think it's a new option... Or I just didn't look hard enough before

That has been a feature ever since Voice has been available to the public. When you check to have a Voice text to your stock messaging application, Google is essentially texting your default number, which means you're receiving texts via network--which you don't want.
So forwarding texts is not a solution. You will just have to deal with the simple Google Voice messaging app or sign up for a texting plain just to use a messaging app aside from Google Voice.
*However, I haven't touched Google Voice settings since launch so I wouldn't know. Most likely, you're being charged a text or fee when forwarding your Voice texts to your stock app.

My family and I use gvoice for texting, there is no way to access gvoice through another sms app afaik. As for the text forwarding, you are getting charged for each text at that point. My mom accidently checked the box when she setup gvoice and had to pay 18 bucks in texts the next billing cycle.

[Q] Google Voice MMS for Verizon?

I know Google Voice for Sprint is now supporting MMS...is there somewhere that people have unleashed this same power on the Verizon network?

I heard you had to have text to email turned on for that. Can anyone confirm this? I'd rather not have my mailbox receiving tons of emails just to receive a few MMS.
So no knowledge of a difference in the Sprint version of Google Voice that enables the MMS to come through?
Sort of how the Blackboard app is only for Sprint, but a change was made that enabled it on all carriers?
I received one the other day, it sends a text then emails the text/picture to you.
EDIT: Also, I dont have email or anything turned on, it just forwards the email to you since the app doesn't support it yet.

Any idea how long it took to receive it? I had a friend text me twice with pictures attached around 2.5 hours ago and still nothing in my google voice inbox, my Gmail, or my text messages
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
It doesn't matter if you are on Sprint... it matters if the picture sender is on Sprint.
You will only get the picture forwarded to your email if the picture sender is on Sprint, regardless of what you are on. So the person who sent kangxi's girlfriend a picture is on Sprint. Same with the person who sent VinceT3 a picture.
This is disappointing. I cannot abide paying for text and data plans. Maybe if I decide to move to VZW I will finally break down and get FB or Google+ and use those for "MMS" texts.
I know whenever I get a text via Google Voice it shows up in my Handcent SMS app. Do you want me to do some digging and see what my settings are? Or am I missing the point?
Edit: oh I see now, your talking about MMS not SMS, sorry I guess I can't read and comprehend right now. It must be getting late for me lol.

Not from the GV number. You could from the new reassigned VZW number.
well that sucks i was trying to avoid using any other kind of number..maybe i should reconsider keeping my old number
Rumor is they are working with Verizon on gv mms support but for now its only sprint as mentioned. The hack is indeed to fwd gv copies to email as a way to get the mms content.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
One thing that needs to be mentioned about how Sprint and GV integrated is that you only have one number. I haven't heard about Sprint members getting MMS when they have a different GV number than their cell #. Remember how this works. If you have 2 numbers then you send and receive MMS from the actual carrier number. On Sprint once you "integrate" your Sprint number, there is only one number being shared. There is no forwarding from one number to another. So when someone sends a MMS it falls off GV and going right to the same number on the cell. I am pretty sure there is more to it. But in simple terms, there is only 1 number being shared on Sprint and GV. If that makes sense.

uh, it's one way but it does work with verizon.
you can get MMS (and it gets emailed), but not send. Not sure when the send parts coming but it's more people being sticklers for how they want to send it(who needs it as a text message, truly?)
You will only be able to "see" it as a fowarded email if it has been sent FROM a sprint subscriber. http://googlevoiceblog.blogspot.com/2011/10/first-steps-towards-mms-support.html And yes if you are on sprint yourself and have chosen to INTEGRATE your sprint and GV #, MMS are recieved like normal on your stock native messaging app, not in the GV app.

ICS Voicemail Issue

One major problem I'm having on all ICS builds is the voicemail issue.. Visual voicemail always crashes and i have to dial out to retrieve my voicemails. Ive tried the clear data and force stop method but once you receive a new v mail the problem repeats itself. Has anyone found a solution? I refuse to use google voice..

Sprint VVM is borked in the ICS builds. I believe its a bug with the notifications. Uninstall it and use Youmail until its fixed. Youmail is a nice standalone alternative and easy to activate and deactivate.

Ok thanks Ill give youmail a try.. And i google voice is just to much for me.. It records your text messages and everything uploads all your info online.. It comes in handy but that's too much control. I don't need google knowing everything about me lol.

Can you use Youmail as a replacement for regular sprint voice mail?
I have elderly parents that if they can't reach me on my cell will leave me a vm instead of texting.
On CM9, if you push visual voicemail to system>app and set permissions, it'll stop it from crashing. The new problem is that it keeps retrying to "get your information" every time you open the app then.

Why do you refuse to use Google voice? I set it up without integrating it with my sprint number and telling it not to be used for any calls. Then, I see it as the ultimate vvm because I can get messages on my tablet, desktop chrome browser, etc. If you don't let it have the additional functionality, it behaves pretty much the same as the stock vvm... Unless I'm way off base?

Google Voice issues.

Wasn't quite sure where this would go in the forum. Feel free to move it Mods.
I recently purchased a Nexus 4 from the Play Store and started a Monthly4G prepaid plan through T-Mobile. Everything works perfectly except for Google Voice. I add the T-Mobile number to the forward settings in Voice and it sets up calling just fine, but when I attempt to send text messages I get nothing but messages being "queued." I attempt to view messages in my inbox on the device I get an error saying "Network Error." Ever since adding this number I haven't been receiving notifications for new texts in Growl Voice and the Google Voice website doesn't load my inbox or settings either. Any ideas?
Thank you.
I may be wrong here, but I thought I read somewhere in the forums that Google Voice doesn't work with pre-pay T-Mo

I'm using it on mine no problem. Must use latest 4.2 compatible version. Also have to call Tmo and tell them to disable voicemail on your prepaid account then all messages will forward.

I've already called T-Mo and all that. I've had my voicemail disabled. It is more of an issue with the site's inbox not loading. It gives me an error "There was an error with your request. Please try again" and messages are constantly being queued on my Nexus 4 and 7, more so than usual. This all started when I added the N4 to my Voice call forwarding register.
What? Google voice works just fine with monthly 4g. You don't get conditional call forwarding but that's not the issue the OP is referencing.

Anyone else having problems where Google voice keeps giving notifications for old voice mails when the option to show voice mails in the native phone app is enabled?
So annoying. Every 12 or so hours, it pops up with a notification for 6 voice mails or something, all of which are old. I even make sure they were shown as read in the ap, and I played all of them and made sure they were read in the phone app.

YES YOU CAN. Why is this rumor getting started. I 100% use Google Voice on my Pre-paid TMO $30 a month plan.
Disable voicemail by calling T-mobile. That way your T-mobile voicemail doesn't kick in before your GVoice mail does.
Use the Google Voice app to send and receive text messages. This way you 100% know things are getting to you. I by-pass the built in messenger app which may be why some people are having issues.

+2 been using it since the plan launched.
When you first get the plan call T-Mobile. Ask to have voice mail disabled (there is no conditional forwarding, as has said), and also have them remove web-guard. When someone calls your phone, if you don't answer, google voice should time-out after x rings and take the voice mail (this is the reason you disable it on T-Mobile, or else T-Mobiles system will take the call).

When I try to enable GV voicemail by entering the code *004*GV Number here# I get a error message. I got this on two different Android devices. What am I missing? Are you saying once I disable the TMo voicemail this code should go through next time?
The google voice number is not the same as my mobile number if that makes a difference.
Unfortunately, i'm unable to send text messages and i'm wondering if it has to do with entering that code number through your dialer. Worked like a charm before when I was not on a prepaid plan.

You just don't worry about any of that. No need to dial anything or enter any codes.
Someone dials your google voice number, it rings until your google voicemail picks up. Simple as that.
If someone dials your pre-paid number, it will ring and ring and ring and ring.
To send texts just use the Google Voice app.

I'm curious if it will work with Google Voice Lite without the Google Voice App. Having to use the app does get irritating when it stops running in background and causes delayed notification if you don't have Text or Email notification active. Also it does seem the app doesn't get updated much.
I have missed important messages in the past and now I check the Google Voice app at least once a day to make sure it had not stopped.

I haven't used the GV app on my phone in months (or over a year now) - had to check to see if it was still there To be honest, I don't think it is needed after the initial set up.
I get my notifications via an Email from GV to my mailbox, with the transcriptions and link to message - I also get a text message sent to my GV#, which results in a SMS on hangouts app.

Thanks for the reply but like I said before if you have Text and EMail notification turn off you just get a voicemail notification from native app and could use native app to check. But if the Google Voice App stops you don't get the Notification because messages do not sync with the native app.
Text and Email notification (icon) if you have a lot notification do not standout as much as the voicemail notification (icon). Would be much easier if Google would include Google Voice Lite in the native app without having the separate app for syncing.
Transcription has never worked well for me because everyone beside Robo spam that leave me a message have Spanish accents. (Funny to read and trying to guess what they really said) Google Voice Lite app has the transcription but would be better in native app.

Understood. I don't use the native app for voicemail notification, so I never ran into this issue. I just rely on the hangouts notification. Thanks for the clarification

In the native phone app the voicemail tab works with Verizon's visual voicemail. I just finished setting up my phone and it works.
