Anyone else having issues with wireless tethering? I have tried multiple ROMS including Random 3.3, CleanGB 1.0.3, and SleeperRom. The hotspot Hack used to work brilliantly for me but about a week ago I started having issues where my ipad would connect for about 5 minutes on first start of the tethering, then after about 3-5 mins it would start flashing the connected icon (like it was connecting and disconnecting from the hotspot). Other wifi connections work just fine (example the one at my house).
I have also tried barnacle and wifi-tether beta 11 for root. Those don't seem to be able to connect at all. (Could not join network message for barnacle, connect briefly then disconnect for wifi tether)
Any help is greatly appreciated as I use the tether to watch hulu and netflix while at work and I have been bored the past few days.
Since it is on every ROM and every tether app, is it possible it is something in your Ipad? Never had a problem tethering from Froyo to CM7. Try Odining back to stock, root and tether. If it works there move forward testing at each stage. You may have bad data somewhere.

I thought it might have been the iPad also except that all the other wifi connections I have tried work like a charm and stay connected. I am at stock EI22 right now so I will get it rooted and try again to see what happens.
Are there any system logs or anything I can look at to see if the broadcast is going in and out or something on the epic?
You can try running logcat. It is an app in the market. It logs all operations.
Might have resolved it...
I did a clean ODIN back to stock EC05, then ODIN to a rooted EC05, then ODIN the CWM 5.
I flashed CleanGB 1.0.5 MTD and attempted to tether with default settings (enabling security) which i think defaults to WPA Tkip. that didnt work (connect then immediate disconnect then when I attempted to connect again it gave failed to join message.)
Finally I switched security to WPA2 AES and connected the iPad. it has been connected for a few minutes now so hopefully it stays connected.
Thanks for the help.
TLDR: Switch security on Hotspot Hack to WPA AES and tether worked.
Nice job! Glad you got it working.

this has been an ongoing problem coming from 2.1 and still exists in 2.2.
i tried different versions of wireless tether 2.02 and 2.05 pre1, pre2, pre5 and now pre7. they all have the same problem where i connect and everything works great, then after 10 minutes, the connection drops on the laptop. on the phone it still says connected but with 0KB. (even if theres nothing connected, it should show 0.1 to 0.4kb) i will then have to disconnect tether from my phone, then turn it on again, it'll work for another 10 minutes before the connection drops again. i tried wiping the phone and it didnt help. i upgraded to froyo yesterday, tried wireless tether on 2.05 pre7 and the same problem exist.
does anyone have this issue?
Wrong Forum.
Questions belong in the Q&A Forum.
sorry, mods, please move. thanks!
Moved to Q&A.
I have the exact same issue. I thought I was the only one. I don't recall it being a problem prior the to OTA (1.47) update.
The only way I've found to have stable wifi tether at this point is to use cyanogen's rom. The built in Froyo tether is very stable and doesn't have this dropout issue. But I would prefer to use stock with Sense UI.
it was a problem for me since day 1. was hoping the issue would go away after the 1.47 update but no. i would also like to keep it as stock as possible with sense. if anyone can come up with a solution or fix. it would make me really happy
It is very annoying. I've tried:
-enabling Access Control
-Adding a WPA2 password
-Using both of the above
-Changing the SSID
-Changing the Channel
-Changing the LAN settings
-Updating to pre3 and then pre4.
-Wiping and Clearing Cache and Installing only Wifi Tether
-Numerous ROMS (Stock Eclair, Fresh 1.0.1, Damages 3.2.3, Stock Froyo + netarchy's kernel)
The only thing I haven't tried yet is pre6/7. I will give them a try tonight, but I don't have much faith that they will fix the issue.
i've done the same as you. im on pre7 now and it didnt fix the issue. =(
I have this problem only with Android 2.2 roms. I have tried Android Wireless Tether 2.0.5 pre4, pre6, and pre7 with the stock kernel and with netarchy's 3.7.6c kernel. I have tried on the rooted odexed final 3.26.651.6 posted by netarchy, Fresh 3.1.0.1, Ava's 3.0, and Baked Snack 1.1. The settings I use don't seem to matter (various SSIDs, encryption on/off, access control on/off). I can't stay connected longer than 10 minutes, but sometimes I am only connected for a minute or less. Also, after a disconnect it takes several tries to reconnect.
Might be good to start an issue for the developer's on their site by going here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/entry
Android Wireless Tether 2.0.2 (theory of evolution) works fine for me on various Android 2.1 roms and I stay connected for hours at a time.
What happens when you change the power mode to always on? Its under advanced settings. The default is to disable after 10min of inactivity.
Maybe you guys tried this. I didn't see it mentioned.

where is this setting? is it a setting in the wireless tether? i dont see it. only the disable wake lock. which is checked.
I'm sorry I thought you were talking about sprints app.
Maybe that setting applies to the wireless tether app too?
Worth a try anyways. It's under settings>wireless>Sprint hotspot settings>menu-advanced>power settings.

I wish my disconnects were only every 10 or 15 minutes. Unfortunately I am lucky to stay connected for 3 minutes at a time. When I get disconnected, the phone stops broadcasting its SSID and I have to stop and restart tethering to get connected again. I finally added an issue to the google project site here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=488&start=200
I think I found a very simple solution to this problem. I didn't think I had this problem, but I found out that I did once I tried to download over 12GBs of different operating systems for one of my classes. As you could imagine it was getting very frusterating having the disconects. The solution I have has had an active download for almost an hour now.
The solution? Turn on the wifi radio before tethering.
I wanted to kick myself in the nuts for not thinking of it sooner. Anyway, if you're having this issue give it a try and post your results.
Edit: So it seems a notification from Bloo killed the connection....I'm not sure what's up with that. I noticed when I sent a txt msg it interruped the connection briefly, but it started right back up. Any thoughts, comments, concerns?

You want this unchecked... wake-lock keeps your phone awake.
I read that changing the channel from 6 to 1 or 11 or just another channel may make it work. Good luck!
I'm using fresh rom 3.1.0.2 and the wireless tether version built in is 2.0.5 pre8 and I was wondering if there was a way tether my wifi connection. Is there another app that will do this? Everytime I turn on wifi and enable wireless tether it turns off wifi and I see my 3G connection turn on. This is my first time using wireless tether and it seems like from what I read that this is the norm. Does anyone know a way to make wifi priority over 3G or 4G? TIA.
So just rooted, and downloaded the wireless tether. But for some reason I can't get the ipad to get full ip connection. It connects, just not completely. Anyone else have this issue before?

Guess android and apple don't like messing with each other, lol (just had to put that in)...
But down to your question, have you try connecting a different device to see if you can connect? With your wireless tether on try connecting, like a laptop or other wireless device to see if you can connect. This will give you a better idea Of what's going on.
Did you change any settings for wireless tether?

I had the same issue with my iPod touch. I rooted and tried tethering on the stock rom and had the problem you had. I'm not sure if it was after I flashed a new kernel or a kernel and Fresh 3.2, but the next time I tried it, it worked perfectly. Maybe think about trying a new rom? Not sure of the actual problem.

I've never been able to connect a mobile phone via tether. Never tried an iPad though.

I am running Fresh 3.3.0.1 and my friends Ipad connects to it and works fine. I am using version 2.0.5-pre9 of wireless tether.
i know version 8 wont work with my apple stuff. version 7 works with ipad iphone i know. apparelntly so does 9
I'm running the Fresh 3.3 ROM with wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9 and it works fine with my iPad.
I had a similar problem when I got Wireless Tether. It wouldn't fully connect to anything (win 7, ubuntu, droid 2.1, iphone or macbook) although the devices said they were at least partially connected (except the droid never could see it). Turns out the Wireless Tether app in the marketplace is old/doesn't work for the EVO/Froyo - or something.
Go here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
And download the latest version (pre9 at the top - after you've uninstalled the old version) and it should work. At least it did for me.
Im running Fresh 3.3.0.1 and the last Wifi Tether that I've downloaded and reinstalled I don't know how many times.
At some point the iPad was working great but all of the sudden it just stopped working.
My blackberry connects to the EVO without a problem.
The ipad connects and disconnects or it just spins while trying to connect even tho the phone says its connected.
Any ideas or any other wifi tethering apps suggestions?
Thanks.
I just rooted my stock EVO running Froyo, and installed wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre9. Although it seems to run fine, and my iPad connects, it can't connect to the Internet. Seems to be a common problem, as there are several people complaining.

Hmm...
I asked my buddy with an iPhone 4 to try and connect the other day and it worked just fine.
Granted, iPhone and iPad are not the same thing, so take that for what it is. Just saying.
I have an iPad and I run CM6+Snap and if you use CM6 DO NOT use Wireless Tether, use it's built in hotspot ability. If you use fresh. I never had a problem using the included version of Wifi Tether.
On stock rooted. Hard to say. I only very briefly use stock rom's. I would guess fresh/etc. make other adjustments to fine tune but not sure.
I do know there is nothing hardware-related that prevent an ipad from seeing android tethering.
One tip I've read about, try using Channel 1.
It does seem to be the best for maintaining connection when experiencing repeated drops.
I've connected to my 2 grandkids' Touchs (or is that touches .. lmao) but best results on ch.1
cheers
i have rooted my phone earlier today using unrevoked 3 and i have install the new version of wireless tether - pre 10 and although it shows my htc evos connection as local or limited connection on my computer, i have yet to gain internet access. it shows limited connectivity and doesnt allow me to go online. i am confused and give up.
yes must agree about channel 1 on on wifi tether. I have iPad ios4.2 beta 2 running on my hook to my evo using standard stock rom 2.2 rooted. Using pre8 edition wifi tether, sometimes starting connection would not connect right away. I suggest toggle wifi-tether on and off about 2 times and give the iPad time to connect, one more thing could try on iPad is utilize forget this network if applicable and see if that helps! Hope all works out okay for you.

i almost returned my evo cuz my ipod touch 3gs wouldnt connect to it. sometimes it saw the connection sometimes it didnt...also it varied whether i had a passcode or not. i just gave up.
also, no phones can connect to it but my computer/laptop can. WEIRD!! i always maintained the latest wireless tether. once i root my phone again ill try this. but i will not get my hopes up.
also,
it sucks so bad that i have stopped using the ipod due to no internet and have gotten in deep with the g/f since she bought it for me...lol

This suggestion seems to have done the trick (toggling). I tried to connect using my old HTC Fuze and had no luck with that either. So I guess that puts doubt that the issue is client side.
I then turned WT off and back on. Lo and behold my Fuze was able to surf. Did the same with my WiFi only iPad.
I'm using the Pre9 version on my HTC stock 2.2 (rooted).
I couldnt get my evo to wifi to my ipad until I install wireless-tether 2.0.5-pre7.
Tried pre11,pre9 and it wouldnt work. As soon as I launched this the ipad connected right away.
Ok.. please excuse the ignorance about anything tethering lol... but can I connect my rooted evo to the Tmobile Samsung Galaxy tab?... and, obviously access theyre hspa+ network?
Thank you.
Seems since upgrading to cm7, I hafta run wireless tether twice to get it to work...the first time I run it I get the limited or no connectivity on XP, but if I stop then restart tethering it works fine from there.
Has anyone else seen this and if so is there a way to fix it?
same problem here. never works the first time, always works the second time.
but the built in tether app never works and i would like a fix for that as well so i can access it from the toggle menu.
Built in tether app seems to work for me, but I prefer wireless tether for the data counter and access control...
Anyone ever figure this out? I saw a few ppl mention it in the nightlies discussion but didn't see a solution...

Yes I used the Search feature, still no satisfactory resoultion...
I have rooted several phones over the past few weeks (with different bootloaders), Evo 4Gs, one tethers, one doesn't, Droid RAZRs, both tether, Droid 3s, neither tether (I read the TBH thread, so...), E4GT neither tether (mine included but am running Phantom's Rom so no worries there).
I am at my wits end. The apk(s) used to work before, but as of late I am not having any success at all. Android Tether lists in my networks, my pc and laptop will connect, internet access is detected, they connect but NONE of my browsers are able to connect.
I never had this problem, never had to change any settings in the apk(s), and never had to change my pc(s) configuration. Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone know what is going on?

Try FoxFi, free at Google Play. I had issues tethering E4GT. This app works great for Samsung & Motorola. All others, maybe Bluetooth.

Wifi Tether (Im using 3.1 beta11 pulled from Calk's ICS roms) works if you change the device profile to "Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE)". I always enable the access control and allow the pc accessing.
The hacked sprint hotspot has always worked for me on gingerbread as well i prefer it but use the other atm on ICS.
Wifi Tether wont work properly until you change it to thet CDMA/LTE Nexus it gives the same issue you describe without the change.

Ok but what are you running ICS or GB because there is an answer to both.... If you are rooted the stock wifi tether works fine so can we have a little more info although the answers you have gotten so far a pretty damn good.
Thanks
I switched to my Nexus S 4G to give the ICS ROMS a spin and really loved it but missed my E4GT so I recently switched back. I am currently on Phantom's EL26 (Gingerbread) from way back when. I found that the EL 26 modem gives me the best battery life by far and I like the debloated stock because I am running SPB SHELL 3D launcher (cracked-pm me).
I have so many Google Wifi Tether apks on my pc and dug up the wifi_tether_v3_1-pre101.apk and changed the channel to 6. It works now.
The Sprint Hotspot comes fully functional on the ROM that I am on but it was really bugging me that I couldn't get the google wifi tether to work on friends' and family's phones. There must be a bug in the newest release or something.
FIFOX said that HTC has a block on wifi tether when I tried to install it on my friend's Evo 4G.
I am going to use the TBH thread to change the radio strings on my friend's Droid 3 so he can tether. We'll see how that goes later today.
-worked like a charm; rewrote the strings with RadioCom and changed the entitleent with sqlite editor, using the most recent google wifi tether apk on chanel 6.
Thanks for all the input. I'm gonna hit the thanks button for you all.
PEACE!
I haven't been able to get my wifi tether working. I've searched for hours but most of the post aren't very recent. I've tried adjusting the settings to many different combinations as mentioned in three other posts. I'm on baseband MC2, JB 4.1.2 and have tried two roms...Swampmonster 2.2/2.3 and Macks Allstar 5.0, as well as using both my PC and laptop to connect. I've used the TrevE mods that come with both roms as well as a couple of apps from the play store.
The same thing happens with every attempt, I connect to the AP but don't get any connection to the internet...DNS server is not responding.
I've recently changed from big red over to sprint and have had my N2 for about a week now. Is this a Sprint thing or is it just my unfamiliarity with my Note 2?
Any help would be much appreciated. Dexter's on tonight.....
Also tried WolfRom and USB tethering, still no connectivity

It's been working for me, basically. I'm on a stock deoxided MC2 ROM with Perseus kernal. I get an error but I don't know what it is, since the log gives another error about no file existing. The error I had before trying to reinstall WiFi and BusyBox was a routing fix failed error.
I used this at work for at least six hours to connect a tablet and laptop. I figure I'm using around 2GB to 6GB each night.
Unfortunately, you're going to have to keep experimenting. I suggest trying with just the defaults settings. See what happens. If not, try changing Driver reloads or none. Unfortunately, it's just a lot of trial and error.

Thanks. I don't give up easily...I'll get it working if possible. I'm just wondering if Sprint is blocking the tether because I connect right away with no errors but the "DNS Server is not responding".

Sprint should be blocking you unless there is something off on your phone. My issue, I think, has to deal with the BusyBox Linux binary library that got loaded. I'm assuming maybe a phone wipe and reflash may fix it.
Yea, I'm near the wine valley, actually. Although, I prefer to be back in San Diego.
I installed Goodness Noteworthy v1.0.8 ROM and get good wifi tethering of 3G. I haven't tested 4G as I don't get it yet.
I'm just running stock rooted MC2 with updated CSC data (Garwyn's) and the separate TrevE version of the Wifi Tether APK works like a charm. My kids just used it on 3G and LTE all the way down I-95 in Florida. Sometimes it would boot them all off when switching from LTE to 3G, but they'd reconnect without issue.
Not sure if that helps you, other than I'm using the very latest MC2 OTA and maybe you're still using a ROM based on the leak? I'm not a dev, so if I'm talking out of my posterior just disregard!
Got it working
I'm still not sure why I had problems when nobody else did on the respective threads for the roms I mentioned above.
I did get it going though...For the touchwiz roms I had to run ISWAT tether unlocker while my tether was active (It's on the Play Store).
Right now I'm running LiquidSmooth's AOSP rom and the native tether works great. I've been bouncing back and forth between nandroid
backups; I like TW most of the time but when I want to tether or am looking for speed/responsiveness I switch over to AOSP.
Just to make sure, have you tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40234725
I flashed it on deodexed stock MC2 and it works great, even with tablets and an iPod Touch.
I got it working with Treve mod

Had to change one settings, or else it wouldn't appear on PC

I've got it working on deoxidized rooted stock rom. I'm using the latest beta from July 20, 2013 (TrevE Mod Wifi Tether. The only setting I needed to change was to Driver Reload 2.
wifi-tethering
Now, I'm also using the Wifi -Tethering . its still working now.
you can find info from rootnote2.com
Is the problem of wifi tether under AOSP rooms on this device totally insoluble?
I've never found an answer to it, only directions to fixing it under TouchWiz or vague changelog entries about having 'fixed wifi tether' on Carbon and such, which did no such thing.
Standard wifi tether app 3.3b2 fails to start an access point. TrevE mod claims to start fine in the app's log, but no access point shows up on a scan. The mobile hotspot function in system settings also starts up, and even let's devices connect, but there's no data transfer.
I understand that there's something bad going on with Samsung's release of wifi drivers, so I'm just hoping that someone somewhere has looked into this.
