To be honest the thing that lets my Galaxy S down is this awful Kies software...
is terribly hit and miss, 99% cant connect with my 64Bit windows 7 machine, luckily I have a 32 bit desktop and it seems better at connecting with this, but it crashes out, is clunky and slow....please tell me there is an alternative.
I thought I hated Itunes, but this it terrible
itunes is not that bad as you get used to it...
but KIES? well... KIES is just.. stupid.. I don't even install it, just the drivers.
Don't like it, dont use it.
I use Nokia's Ovi music player for music management.
How else can you sync with your outlook then ?
You can't really compare Kies with iTunes. I dislike iTunes, but applaud Apple in creating a program that just holds everything together. So much that none of their devices will work without connecting to it (imagine if Kies worked like that? The horror!).
Kies on the other hand is an annoying program. I actually liked it, well designed, it's got those nifty widgets, BUT it does not work most of the time.
I'm on Win7 64bit as well and it is so annoying.

sync over broadband
I use gsyncit on my PC to sync Outlook with Google calendar and contacts and let the phone sync via the cloud.
but the great thing is you don't need Kies,
you can easily drag and drop music/video files to your phone
and your email/contacts/calendar syncs wirelessly to & from Gmail
and if you need to flash the phone, there is always Odin and Heimdall

I don´t understand what the guys from Samsung where thinking about the development of Kies. For me it is completely useless. To sync my contacts and calender i have Gmail and never had any problem with it.
But with Kies... i have it installed on Windows 7 64Bit and to get it connected i have to restart the phone or the computer, otherwise it won´t do anything.
So yesterday i tried to set it up in Vista 32Bit and there it even wasn´t possible to install. No error or something showed up. Just hanged when it copied the files... Don´t remember any Setup that hanged on my computer. But well, i just don´t use it. Mass storage is all i need.
I don't think I've used Kies for anything so far, can't stand the thing. It used to start up whenever I plugged my phone in even when I told it not to, got it sorted eventually though.

Second this
and also agree with the topic.
Kies is really worse than Itune. luckily we have a very good solution "just don't use it "
Kies is a total POS software. Dont bother with it at all.
Yea compare to nokia pc suit. kies is just simply crap!
i use iTuneMyWalkman with iTunes. It automatically syncs the playlist you want or all the library with your phone when its connected, its free and works perfectly.. just in case, i use a macbook
I believe all original syncing software from all brands is crap.
The basic difference here with itunes (in my opinion) is that without itunes you can do nothing to iphone.
for kies on the other hand I cannot find any other use than updating your phone's firmware. (If you want to update to the original firmware.)
Syncing can be done with gmail from within the phone.
I don't seem to have a problem with it. It connects to my phone just fine (Windows 7 64b) and it has some nice little features.
Just make sure that you delete all USB drivers and phone drivers on your computer and once you do that, reinstall all drivers by connecting your phone while it's booting, starting up, and while fully on. Once all those are ok, download some Samsung Galaxy S drivers online.
Works flawlessly for me.
use Android Manager instad of KIES
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765081
if it's just the music and media management you're rambling about, forget KIES.
WMP12 works wonders with music sync. I've set it to sync my playlists automatically when I connect my Galaxy. The best part? Playlists are copied over to the phone as well. You can use WMP12 to manage photos and videos to, but I really only use it for music.
Videos? Simple - drag and drop.
Contacts and calendar? Set it it to sync automatically to you Gmail account.
Well...
Nokia PC suit was replaced with OVI suite... that simply blows...
iTunes is simply a memory leak application (does it do anything else?)
So besides nokia pc suite I find Kies decent...
Kies is crap... Then again, all of the 'official' phone software I've seen is crap (sony ericsson, nokia). Most of it is bloated, slow and just not worth it. iTunes is crap as well, always hated it and prolly always will.
Luckily you don't need Kies, you can transfer files etc just fine without it.
Anyone know if there is a way to install apps/games of over 20 mb without a wi-fi connection. So far i found nothing
Thank you for your help
also zune cant seem to let me sync my music (mp3 format) it says format not supported
strange , I just synced over 1000 mp3 using zune with a usb cable .
You need to tick the box in Zune to have it auto-convert to an acceptable format and you're good to go.
As for apps over 20mb - that'd be via the client and a USB cable.

To download an app larger than 20 MB, you need to be on a Wi-Fi connection or a connection to your Internet-connected computer via USB. Windows Phone 7 was designed for not only those with unlimited smartphone plans, but for those without smartphone plans or data capped smartphone plans. Therefore at this time, any apps over 20 MB must be downloaded over Wi-Fi/USB.

Download music from the Zune Marketplace can be in either a protected .WMA format (not WMV, as that is for videos), or an MP3. When you tap a specific song to buy or download, an MP3 will have a little MP3 icon telling you that you are downloading the song in an MP3 format. The same goes for purchasing music through the PC client. If you see an MP3 symbol, you are downloading MP3s, if you don't see that symbol, they are protected WMA files.
Symbol looks like:
Code:
_____
|MP3|
¯¯¯¯¯
If you set up the Zune software to convert files to a lower bit-rate during sync, then your files will be converted to the same format as your original file (though it seems only MP3 and WMA - if your file is not of these types, it will convert to WMA). Your original file, will not be touched on your computer, and only your device will contain the modified file.

So you mean you can buy mp3's from the phone and than just put it on the computer through Zune to have mp3 files there?
This restriction annoys me too, why not just have a pop up saying this is over 20meg, if you have a restricted data plan, it might be benifital to use Wifi or USB, do you want to continue?
For the mp3 i was unable to sync because i was trying top copy and drop them direcly from a usb drive to zune ... I bad to copy them on my computer first and then it worked
The 20mb limit is an operator restriction, not a phone one. It used to be 10mb...
how is it an operator restriction? wasnt limited on the HD2 though the same operate. its WP7 that limits it.

As long as you make sure you are buying MP3s from the Marketplace, then when your phone syncs with the Zune the next time you plug it into your computer, it'll sync that MP3 file to your computer.

Because some carriers have low data limits (like AT&T's 2GB limit and chain installing a bunch of large applications uses up tons of data). On top of that, if your data connection drops, then the file will have to start downloading all over again, which can lead to ridiculous data usage in low reception areas. Android does the same thing (restarts the download if the connection drops or something happens).
Music brought from Zune on a PC is downloaded in 320 kbps MP3 format. Just buy from the computer. The MP3s are huge, though. Like 10-15+ Megs per song, due to the high bitrate and low compression.

... then Zune says 'App will be downloaded soon'??!
Couldn't find any link to download in Zune. No option to sync Apps etc.
I have to:-
1. Disconnect phone from PC
2. Go to Marketplace and search for the App
3. Tap on Buy
4. "You've already purchased this. Would you like to install it again? message"
5. Tap on Install
6. Downloading starts

WiFi can drop, yes, but downloading **** off WiFi doesn't go against your data count with the carrier, and you always have the option of downloading with your computer over WiFi or a wired connection and then Syncing your phone via WiFi or USB.
I wasn't telling you what MP3 is. Someone said the files were WMVs. The music you buy off Zune aren't. The Subscription music (DRM'd) are low bitrate WMV files and they weigh in at like 4-6MB each (average). The brought MP3 files are high bitrate and weigh in at 10-15MB each.
I'm simply stating that if you are in a low reception area, or an area where the 3G->2G->3G handoff causes issues with downloads, you can end up using like 40 MB to download one MP3 from the Zune Marketplace. That is a real issue for people with a 2G data plan because they will also be syncing email, social network data, streaming music off Zune, and probably getting documents off SkyDrive, uploading videos to YouTube (that you can do trivially via email), etc.
If that happens 10x a month, that can be 300MB of your 2GB data limit, which is not a trivial number. For people like me who live in low reception areas, it can easily be more than that.
I only get a 1G (GPRS) connection here (rarely bouncing to edge), so don't talk to me about WiFi dropping more than a data connection. I'd probably use a Gig of data in month downloading due to failed connections and the phone restarting the download. WiFi is infinitely more reliable than ANY data network in this area, and I'm only 7 miles out the city. I've bounced between all 4 major carriers. They're all equally terrible - two of them don't get a connection here AT ALL.

So you see, different experience here.
My carrier is very stable most of the time. And fast.
Most of WiFi I use is unstable.
SO, I still think user should be able to decide what size of files are downloaded.
To control it's own device and react according to situation.
Again, treating users like idiots. That's why they cannot learn anything more sofisticated later on.
And using computer, well, that was not part of the question.

To this I say, most users are idiots. Maybe not us here on XDA (at least, most of us), but the majority of people who buy phones do not spend their late evenings browsing the forums of places like this one.
Most people are absolute idiots and the reason why they don't learn is because they refuse to learn, not because someone didn't provide "advanced" options. Everything must be done for them or else they are completely dissatisfied. So to this end, Windows Phone 7 is far more fool-proof than say Windows Mobile 6.5 or Android, and that is simply because most people are idiots. I do wish Microsoft would provide more options, but at this early in the game, we've gotta take what we got and run with it. More options will come as the OS matures, so just hang tight.
You know how we learn? We learn because of these limitations. If these limitations did not exist, we'd have no need for XDA or similar sites. So while I'd love more options, I love the fact that the lack of some options allows us to learn new things and gives people the motivation to learn and solve these issues.
We are, only human, after all.
I mean this is ridiculous that a top tier phone is so difficult (impossible) to sync playlists on, I am also pretty knowledgable regarding digital music, phones, and computers and still cannot get this working after months. Using MTP i can occasionally get ONE playlist to sync using winamp but when i try to do more it will erase the other ones or clear them out. I then got an app that puts my external SD card ino mass storage mode and that almost works but after adding about 20 songs to a playlist only 5 or so actually showed up. Doubletwist does not work. Windows Media player did not work. Using Kies it puts the songs on my phone but not the playlists.
If anybody can actually do this please share how. I used to have a captivate and this was as simple as it should be. So frustrating that i have spent this much time on it and still haven't gotten anywhere.

hm, i never got around to it myself, i just dump all my music on a 64GB MicroSD and there they are, but my mom sync'ed playlists i think with windows media player on my old GS3. MTP mode, debug in developers options ON.
It's more about what program you're using. I personally use isyncr. Though I find it strange that winamp isn't working.
Try "easyphonesync" from the playstore.
i'll check out a couple of the suggestions. It's actually not even so much an issue of 'syncing' the playlists either, more so just being able to transfer them one way from my computer to my phone
+1 for rsync
I shopped around for a couple of weeks for software to sync my playlists AND music. (I'm on Mac OS)
I couldn't find anything better. Give it a shot.

Here's the situation...
My wife wants to listen to music at work without using the data plan. She would like to have all of her music on the phone at all times. When she rips CDs (yes she still buys CDs) or buys new music on Amazon she'd like it to just show up on her phone. The CD rips and Amazon purchases go to a folder on a PC which automatically gets uploaded to Google. She has 9500 songs and a 128gb card so there's no space issue. I have tried two plans but am not happy with either one. If you have any ideas I'd appreciate it.
Plan 1:
Use Google Play Music. The only way I could figure out how to get all of her music to her phone was to create a playlist that had every song in it and then click on the download icon. That works but it's static. Any new songs aren't downloaded and she must manually go in and download any new songs. That doesn't make her happy. (Happy wife, happy life.)
Plan 2:
Use any other MP3 music player. Lots of good choices out there. However, maintaining the music is a pain in the buttocks. To get the files there initially I just put the 128g chip in my computer and drag all of the files to the chip. That works. But I can't find out a way to get new songs onto the chip without manual intervention. I thought I could use a folder sync application but none of them have the authority to write to the external SD card (thank you Google) and new files won't get to the SD card without a lot of manual hand holding. That's a no go. I guess I could root and then use a folder sync application but this is her phone, not mine, and I'm not going there.
So, if any of you have any brainiac solutions, I'd love to hear them.
Have you played with Samsung link yet? It will allow you to link your (her) phone to your computer (provided it's turned on and connected to the internet) so any new music loaded on to the computer will be available to the phone.

I went with plan 1. Turns out that to download music a playlist can only have 1,000 songs. I created 10 playlist to get all of the filed to her phone. Sending new music is relatively easy as there's a "recently added" playlist to use to download new music.
Plan 2 doesn't work well as KitKat and external SD cards are not user friendly.
I use SyncMe Wireless to transfer all files to my phone anymore. You can set a schedule to automatically sync any file from a shared folder on your PC to any directory on your device (not sure about an external sd card, i just use the internal storage). It's worked seamlessly for me. I just drop files in my "Send to Android" folder I made on my computer and in the middle of every night it will check to see if files need to be sent over. It can work in reverse too and send files from your phone to your PC.
Here's the link to the app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bv.wifisync&hl=en
It's nothing too flashy but it works very well. :good:

Question, are you transferring then unplugging to check if they transferred? Sometimes windows and android have a hard time communicating...this is jokingly called the "middle school dance" where both see each other but both don't make the first move to update what has been done.
Sometimes I transfer stuff but windows explorer never updates what has actually transferred.
Absolutely what @Gytole said. And it's not just Windows' built-in File Explorer. Other programs like GPSoftware's Directory Opus also have the same problem with views of the phone's storage across MTP.
@gmfeld Have you checked on the phone itself if you can see the files that you think you copied recently?
Try rebooting - both the phone and the computer?
Yes I checked my phone after unplugging. Weird, the last time I tried 4 files transferred out of 20. I rebooted my phone I will try rebooting my computer
I've rebooted my phone and computer and have tried every way I can think of. Four out of 20 files were transferred to my phone internal storage and I cannot get the rest of the mp3 files of the same album to copy over. This must be new to me with the latest update.

Thanks. I also already have a lot on there, this is something new for me.
I've loaded mp3s on mine (through musicbee sync) on mays firmware so i don't think it's tied to that. Are you on May or one of the betas (june's or 13)
I also transfered boot to downloads via explorer but that was on april
I'm almost willing to bet it's a driver issue. Windows is NOTORIOUS for "Hey! I see you're working but let's go ahead and install a different driver cause I want to piss you off."
Legit happened to me after I updated Evo to version 3 yesterday. I went into the bootloader, updated the rom, and when I went to copy over the boot.img there was no "Picel 6 pro" in explorer...I had to open device manager and choose the middle MTP driver from the "choose from list" to get it to see my P6P again makes me wanna freakin hit a baby sometimes.

I was about to do the test, but was having some problems with MTP seeing the contents of a very deep folder structure of some of my FLAC files (which already exist on my P6P's internal storage), and then I remembered that actually, when I copy large amounts of and/or large sizes of files, I do so through an intermediary - usually a MicroSD card through a simple non-powered USB-C hub (using X-Plore File Manager).
Now that I've reminded myself of that, I don't even want to attempt to do the same kind of thing through MTP. It's painful and actually takes longer than copying to a MicroSD card first. Figures, eh?
Maybe ADB pull command works better.
Edit. adb push
I just was about to test Xender - Share Music Transfer, but connecting wirelessly to a PC requires enabling a hotspot on the phone and connecting the PC to the hotspot. Still worth testing, but I'll have to do that from a PC that my constant internet connection isn't critical on - so sometime later when I have time to do that.
This seems to be more common when the stock USB C to USB C cable that was included with the phone is not used. Granted, very few people have a USB C port on their computer right now, haha.
Anyway, I would have issues making 60GB video file transfers onto my phone - not because the phone wasn't showing up - but because the file transfer process would just randomly close explorer.exe on Windows after transferring a few files. Once I started using the stock USB C to C cable, this issue stopped occuring (and the transfers were much faster).
But, of course, if Windows isn't even detecting your phone you may have to install the Google Pixel USB driver (and also be sure to enable file transfer on your phone when you connect it to the computer).
So it's not an issue with my phone, as I'm able to transfer mp3 files from my work Windows computer to my P6P using a stock (non-Google) cable. Could it be some setting on my home Windows computer?

I wish I knew what to suggest. There are just too many variables to know.

It's a driver issue on your computer. Remove the driver (uninstall it from device manager), restart computer and let it reinstall.
Don't install Google USB drivers since that's for USB debugging/fastboot. Let windows install the driver by itself.
If that doesn't work, there was a post someone made recently that shows how to reinstall the default windows driver, here.

I think you mean usually illegal, which is of course nonsense. I only use local file and get them from amazon (and formerly emusic). I hate streaming because the ads (though youtube music inserts those in local file too) and data required
