It is usually a .IMG file that you flash using Fastboot.exe (there's many guide in the forums on this, just have a search around)

You don't unpack the kernel. Search the development forum for the correct .ftf file that corresponds to your phone model.
Then, find a guide to using fastboot. That will tell you how to use the kernel.
Sent from my R800x using XDA

hello there
i have changed my rom and now i want to go back to my stock. i tried to use pc companion to restore the phone but when i did i got a message saying that i don't have the official rom (or something like that) and that i can not restore my phone to original. so i tryed to change my rom to the stock manually. but i dont know what .ftf file should i use. i made a try with one and now the phone bootloops and i can not even go to cwm to restore it from there.
please please please help me i am so lost.

thanks man. i am downloading it right now. i just flashed an ftf file "LT18i_4.1.B.0.587_Kernel" and its still bootlooping, i just dont understand why is this hapenning.
+ am i ever gonna be able to use pc companion again anyway? i mean to update my os
i think the problem is you are flashing a kernal instead of a full rom.
also you'll be able to use PC companion and all it's functions when you have a stock rom

What have you done before? Have you tried to install a custom rom? But that's no problem, first you've to reflash the firmware, by doing this:
Download flashtool (can be found in dev section)
Download the firmware .587 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24467321&postcount=1)
Install flashtool
Put the downloaded ftf file into the firmware folder of flashtool (C:\Flashtool\firmwares)
Then start flashtool, click at the flash button, choose the firmware, check "No final verification" and click on Ok
Follow the instructions
If the firmware have been successfully flashed, turn your phone on
Optional: Then you can root it again and install CWM if you want
When you've got a question, just post it :good:
can you please advice how do i update my firmware from .431 to .587?
one post above yours - there is a solution for intall .587

Hello there,
I see that there are already some threads about that but i'm a little bit confused. Can please someone posts clear instructions and links for the tools needed in order to downgrade my xperia M5 to lollipop?
So you need to download the latest version of flashtool from www.flashtool.net then look up your m5's model (eg. E5603, E5606, E5653) and download the software from http://www.xperiablog.net/forum/resources/categories/2015-xperia-range.73/ here (generic just means not set to a specific carrier and it doesnt matter about the country), then click the lightning button in flashtool and select flash mode then select your software and then follow the instructions
Thanks very much for the instructions. I also combined some guides found on the internet and performed the downgrade. You should download the firmware via xperifirm, bundle it in flashtool and then flash it.

well i have done it long ago but as far as i remember i used this guide (http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/08/1...are-files-using-xperifirm-and-flashtool-guide) to create my ftf and then i flashed it. It easy after that you just flash the rom
