[PORT][ROM] Alien ★ Build #5 ★ [TouchWiz/Gingerbread] - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

This a port from the AT&T Skyrocket.
Ported by @cshort0982. Original Dev @romracer.
Original Link
INTRO-Alien ROM provides a concocted stew of TouchWiz, and Gingerbread for your Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Samsung's TouchWiz functionality stays intact, but the Alien theme brings a slight hint of traditional Gingerbread to the party. There are very few theme changes with this ROM.
Features:
- Based on AT&T UCKK1 2.3.6
- Fugu Tweaks modified
- Updated Juwe11 optimizations
- wpa_supplicant with support for Ad-Hoc networks
- Zipaligned
- PNG Optimized
- Deodexed
- Rooted
- Carrier IQ disabled
- CRT animation enabled
- Limited NFC support enabled
- 5 icon dock enabled (4 + the app menu)
- 5 column app drawer
- Customizable 14 toggle quick panel added
- Build.prop optimizations for speed, power savings
- Init.d scripts for compatible kernels (loopy smoothness, memkiller, zipalign on boot)
- Stock-ish kernel with custom ramdisk and BLN (disables ro.secure)
- Boot animation support!
- Reboot, Recovery, Download added to Power Options
- Tethering enabled / entitlement check gone
- SIP over WiFi and 3G
- Updated applications
- Some GApps moved to /data for more flexible management
- Latest Superuser application and binary
- Bloatware removed
- Removal of HSPA+ upload limits
- Additional Samsung applications made removable
- Mms.apk mods: increased MMS text threshold, increased recipient limit
- Email.apk mod: removed security policy restrictions
- Removed “full battery” notification, vibration, sound, and screen wake.
- Auto brightness decreased at lower levels to save battery during nighttime, low-light usage
- Compressed status bar for maximum functionality
- Transparent lock-screen default, changeable in Settings > Display > Screen display
- Colored icons removed from Settings application
- De-themed menus and popups
- sysro/sysrw added
- sqlite3 binary added
- so much more I can't remember!
Changelog:
No more Carrier IQ! It is still technically embedded in framework, but it is completely disabled. This allows MMS to work fine! After the first boot, you should wait about 10 minutes and then reboot. You can then verify there is no iqd process or Agent running. See known issues below if it somehow re-enables.
All system APKs have been re-packed. This solves a problem that occurred with Alien #4 and the "Android System" using more battery than intended. For the nerds, it was constantly running a garbage collection process for ~1 hour after a reboot.
Updated to use my stock kernel. This allows you to use BLN by simply installing the app from the Market. If you have no desire to use BLN, that's fine - no extra battery, etc is used by default.
Bluetooth fixes for HID devices (may fix other issues too).
NFC APK was resigned. This allows you to install the Google Wallet attachment in the first post. Unfortunately, our phone does not have a SecureElement so its unusable. But I have made this change in case some people have SIM cards with SecureElements in them (this is how ISIS will work).
Other minor changes and tweaks based on feedback in this thread.

Bugs:
Rotation (fix just flash kernel)
Flash player seems finicky when installing the ROM. Uninstalling and re-installing through the Market seems to fix it.
Changing the Wi-Fi sleep policy increases battery drain. This is common across many phones and ROMs.
If choosing power off from the Power menu just reboots the phone, you have the first version of Alien #4. Apply the update zip from here in CWM or update to Alien #5.
If Carrier IQ is re-enabled, simply reboot the phone which will trigger the NoCIQ script again. Wait roughly 5 minutes and reboot once more and Carrier IQ should be gone again. I've never personally seen Carrier IQ be re-enabled, but it is theoretically possible for AT&T to do.
If you are having FC bombardment issues after a reboot and you have ever installed Alien #3, then you will need to use stock recovery (3e) to factory reset, reinstall CWM and finally flash Alien #4 or newer. Wiping data in CWM, factory reset in Settings -> Privacy, etc will NOT work!

Is this an actual port? I.E. All the AT&T Apps and branding have been removed. Or is this just instructions because without doing anything the Skyrocket roms work, you just need the correct Kernel and radio if necessarily.
Just curious

Its a full port I presume! Cshort worked on it and yeah. Its not just instructions

Can't install apks from sd card. Swype won't work. Att contacts are still there.
It is not really a port. A port would have the right kernel, it would just work.

OK finally download it again LOL so flashed the rom after flashing i flash singery kernel and rebooted, so i waited 5min then try login to gmail and while login it kept restarting in every attempt, so i though lets do a factory reset data in menu so i did and this time i waited 10min so far so good! Thx phreshjoker...

Yes I flashed synergy kernel. Would not load some apps off the market as well. Says installing, then screen goes black, and phone does soft re boot

Do a factory reset from menu and whait 10min after its done rebooting
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium

That's why you should wait 10 min. The reason being is because the 10 minutes actually let's everything in the rom settle in and work properly...

You have got to be kidding me... It is not a house. During the 10min wait, the phone is supposedly rebuilding the dalvic cache. This is the first device i have owned and flashed where someone said to wait 10mins. There are other roms on here where the developer says no wait is necessary. But anyway, even after waiting 10 minutes it is having issues installing apps. Apks I have on my sd card, and ones from the market. May be a bad download, will try again.

If you want notifications from carrier telling you an updates are available that you can't get. Device management should be frozen or deleted.

Even if some phones say not too... most of the devs recommend it. I had it happen on SGS4g and the vibrant.

[MOD/SCRIPT][7-29]CPU Editor - Secret to Die Hard Battery

CPU Editor Snapdragon
This mod allows you to easily change cpu settings on the fly, and supports dual core devices. Easier and cheaper $$ than available apps that do the same thing !!
ReadMe
Quad core support coming soon !!
This mod will work on dual core devices with snapdragon processors, to check compatibility use a file explorer and go to /system/etc and look for a file named init.qcom.post_boot.sh, if that file exists this mod will work !! It is confirmed working on the Galaxy S3 and HTC One Series.
This is 90% of the secret behind my roms battery life, select ondemand profile from the menu and select battery saver. And see how long your battery lasts
Click to collapse
Features:
Change CPU Governor
Change CPU Min/Max Frequencies
Set Dual Core CPU's Independently - Governor and Frequencies
Force Dual Core - Second Core Online ALL The Time
View Current Settings For Everything
Settings applied on boot/reboot
OnDemand Profiling
Edit I/O Scheduler
Edit Cache Size
Usage:
Flash in recovery
Reboot
Open terminal
Type "su" without the quotes
Type "cpu" without the quotes
Make your selections
Notes:
An error appears sometimes when enabling or disabling force dual core, it's ok the settings still get applied.
Settings get applied immediately
Cores can be set independently, you can make the governors and frequencies different on each core. Could be a great battery saver by limiting the second cores resources.
Force Dual Core will make the second core stay online all the time
Some kernels do not have a available_scaling_freq so the available frequencies will not be displayed, look up the settings your kernel has either in your rom thread or kernel thread.
OnDemand Profiling allows you to set profiles for ondemand governor, the settings possible are performance, performance and battery, and battery saver. Setting will only apply to ondemand govenor !! This will overwrite your cpu settings ie. Governor and frequency.
If you experience a dip in performance while using battery saver, in v3+ you can set your own cpu speed and still use the profile. By default battery saver underclocks the cpus to 1242000, you can now run "cpu" and set battery saver for ondemand profile then edit maxcpu0 and maxcpu1 to a higher frequency like 1350000 until your performance is how you want it.
ChangeLog:
v3:
- Added I/O scheduler
- Added cache size
- Added clear all settings ie., disable
- Made it possible to change cpu frequencies when using a profile

Anyone having trouble with settings sticking use a file explorer and go to /system/xbin and look for a file called start-stop-daemon, if it's not there flash start_stop_daemon.zip in attachments... The script DEPENDS on this file, it will be in the next version to be sure its there
Please report any bugs you may find here.
Thanks to -viperboy- for some of the code used
Enjoy ....

Was in the middle of charging my phone. Flashed the script, set to battery saver, rebooted and finished charging the phone. Already at 18 min screen time and battery is at 98%. Pretty sweet.
So, I flash the zip in CWM and then use terminal to apply the settings?

Hmm, I can't seem to get the settings I set to stick at boot. What I'm trying to do is keep my phone in 'battery saver' mode, so I set it, and it works completely. I confirm this by checking my max CPU, and it is changed, so it worked.
Now, when I try to reboot, the settings don't stick. I checked out my root logs, and disabled all apps that may be changing anything CPU related. Then I ran the script again, set to battery saver mode, and rebooted.
Same thing, the script isn't applied anymore.
I'm running AOKP on JK with the KT747 kernel.
I also tried to make a script and get it to run on boot with ROM Toolbox, but I have no idea how to do that. I tried:
Code:
su
cpu
8
3
x
but that didn't work at all.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
AWESOME!!

Also, instead of flashing via CWM, could I just transfer the files to their respective directory via Root Explorer?

[01-06-2013] [ROM 4.1.2 TW] SUPERLITE SAMSUNG JB V1 > 202mb < ROOTED>

First of all I would like to thank Vincom for letting me releasing his Skyrocket ROM for out beloved T-Mobile GS2. Also, to whoever leaked the ATT JB and Mohan_kr for the awesome Kernel.
This is not my ROM (I'm not a DEV) so if you would like to contribute, please send your thanks to above mentioned parties.
What is this?
This is the strip down version of Bloated ATT Skyrocket ROM, from almost 435MB to 202MB of de-odexed rom. The phone is still fully functional and everything works.
For now, YOU HAVE TO FLASH THE ROTATION FIX NEXT RELEASE I'LL BE INCLUDING IT IN THE ROM. SORRY
STUFF I TOOK OUT, BUT NOT INCLUSIVE:
I'LL BE INCLUDING OPTIONAL APPS, THEY ARE FLASHABLE ZIPS - JUST CLICK ON THE ITEM YOU WANT TO REINSTALL, FLASH IT IN RECOVERY THEN REBOOT, NO WIPING NEEDED.
ALARM CLOCK

MORE STUFF BUT CANT REMEMBER.
ISSUES: No- signal bars are showing up. Please install Network Signal Info from the Play Store.
How to Instal:
1) Download the zip and transfer it to your device.
2) (optional) download any optional stuff (like the apps above),and transfer it to your device.
3) Do a Nandroid backup.
4) Did you do Step 3) ? Do it NOW
5) Format /system
6) Format /data
7) Wipe Data and Cache partition. (you can skip 6, if you have this option in your recovery).
OR you can do Dark side Super Wipe and skip steps 5 to 7.
8) Flash the ROM zip, first.
9) Flash Rotation Fix
10) Flash any Blaze Radio
11) boot the device and WAIT BE PATIENT.
12) Flashing will be successful: You will see the Samsung JB bootanimation, then you will see SAMSUNG logo (glow animation), at this point your touch key lights should be on (dalvik cache being built). If the touch key lights are not lit up, you are soft bricked, go back to recovery, wipe data and cache and reboot.
13) Do not touch for 10 Min
14) Optional-- Restore DATA (Only data) --- I have tested and restoring data works fine for me.
PICK YOUR RINGTONE OR ELSE IT WILL BE SET TO "SILENT"
INSTALL FROM PLAY "GOOGLE SEARCH" FOR THE SOFTKEY (HAPTIC) SEARCH BUTTON FUNCTION TO WORK

Solutions to common issues.
Anyone having problem with the data first wait for 10 min on the initial startup then restart the phone and flash the modems listed.
If that didn't work manually enter apn in the settings.
Hmmm, first. I just feel like saying that lol. Trying to rival my and Tmo's groups's TweakWiz, I see, eh ?

Awesome release. I like how you have those optional finals to be flashed.
I have a question though. I want to use that clock add on, but on a different ROM (LS RC9). I placed it in system apps folder, set permissions, reboot, and its not showing up.
So this fully functional? Everything works except signal bars? Is it smooth and fast?

Worth mentioning all that started with jelly neam upgrade. Ever since this phone had hundreds out wakelocks even hour for no reason. I am not using detect location on weather apps etc. Either. I am not using maps actively either

Having your location access/GPS on will do that for you. Also same thing if you use Google Now.

THe difference between sprint version and AT&T should really be the LTE radio that is about it. they have Wifi on all the time so their radio is mostly standby. mine does the same too. I can not believe - with the same apps - how can Sprint version (2 of them) get twice as much batter as mine !
we all bought the phone the same weekend. I even have AT&T and most samsung services Disabled. Looking at the wakelocks - there is something insanely wrong with way GOogle implemented for AT&T vs Sprint. I guess AT&T version is hogging much more esp with JB
by the way, the same comparison exists for IDLE scenario (bed time)

I agree. but not using google now and location services somehoe defeats JB purpose (apart from project butter
the thing that is puzzling is why Sprint implementation with same or even more options has twie as battery life
i have yet to come across any customization of wakelocks. Does anyone know if we can control these insanely frequent wakelocks? i know there is backitude - but that did nothelp either ;0(

Actually has nothing to do with AT&T vs Sprint phones. Although, if your phone isn't debloated, then yes, it will impact.
But like I mentioned, 2 identical S3 is impossible. The best example to this, one will handle OC/UV and the other won't (that being 1 example outta 100s). Which also makes it that 2 S3 side by side running the exact same thing with the exact same apps and settings will give different stats.

you should have mentioned this at the beginning. a lot of device issues arise after this firmware update. not that this is a guaranteed fix, but i'd wipe the phone. my wife's s3 began having gps, wifi and other issues after the update. boot into the stock revovery to wipe data and cache. of course this will reset the phone but i'd rather take 30 minutes to restore backups/reinstall apps than deal with update bugs for days on end. my wife hasnt had any problems since i reset it. actually, i went a step further by wiping data/cache, flashing the latest firmware via odin and wiping data/cache again in stock recovery. boom...

This. Those kies updates are terrible. What a terrible program that is for updating firmware
I did that. I actually tried cm 10.0 and 10.1 before settling back to stock. Since even cm 10.1 (android 4.2) was bad battery how I was afraid if they're was anything in my phone and they're back to full stock after wipe somehow cm 10.0 android 4.1.2 seemed tad bit better

i have everything stock right now - did not see dalvik cache clear option on stck recovery. ?? is that some hidden option on stock recovery? i cleared regular cache and had wiped data earlier when i went stock from CM 10.1
My wife has stock ROM. All I did was load custom recovery (CWM). When she had an issue like this earlier, I cleared dalvik, and it resolved the issue.
I follow this post everytime I install a new ROM. It's a link from Better Battery Stats discussion forum on XDA. It's solved my maps battery drain problem:

Rotation and WiFi will be broken. I used a boot.IMG that black wing sent me a long time ago that was meant for ATT that I used when I first started porting 4.2
Also all kernels must be modified to work on MIUI so don't flash another kernel

Once I set it to lte mode in the dialer it switches to lte instantly but once I reboot it reverts back to what it was set to previously. As long as I don't reboot I'm good though.

Switch it to CDMA in mobile networks I'm settings then go to dialer and put it in LTET/CDMA auto(PRL). You might have to toggle airplane mode for data to reconnect after switching

Good ol rooting questions

Hi guys
I dont mean to ask questions that have been answered or sound like a total noob. I have a stock s III with 4.4.2 and the gps is just GARBAGE. Im so mad at it. I saw a smiliar thread on this but my situation is a little different. I want to fix it. Whats the best rom to run on my phone that wont require a lot of work/maintenance. I had the OG epic and was constantly working on it to keep it tolerable before i got this. is 4.4.4 safe and mostly bug free? Please let me know and thanks for the help. Links with instructions or youtube videos are much appreciated.

If you're on the ND8 modem, try NDC. Or vice versa. I'll get back to you with the name of an app that *could* help.
Have you tried in the stock dialer ##72786# and then update PRL and Profile?
Those are about the only thing that might change your GPS performance unless you get into experimental file tweaking, but I can't help you there.
Is it the actual GPS that's the problem or the mobile data? If your mobile data is weak, Google Maps won't work with or without a GPS signal.
Personally, I doubt if any other ROM would make a difference.

I read some crazy stuff about GPS issues on the Web, when they first started being posted on XDA. One being that the issue related to loose screws. Said to take the back off the s3 and tighten the screws in the back (like 6?). Didn't bother to check into it, but stranger things I've seen/heard...

Im stock so idk what my modem is. Ive tried the prl and profile update several times. Its not the mobile data network cuz its ****ty even with wifi. It started acting up as soon as the phone updated to 4.4.2. "GPS" was changed to "Location" and everything related to the two just works like crap. Ive seen a lot of other ppl with the issues.

yes GPS was changed to Location but you have the option to use high accuracy, power saving or only the gps....and you will know what modem you have even on stock if you have sprint its ND8 if you have boost or virgin you have NDC
Ok. I have sprint. And ive tried all those settings. I guess to be more specific. It has no problem finding me. It has problems following me. So itll find me and set my route but when i hit start navigation itll take the arrow thingy that represents u and jump to another spot. Like itll put me in the middle of a field. And it wont matter if im driving or what my signal is. Itll stay in one spot. ive uninstalled app dates. Uninstalled google maps it self. Tried other navigation apps. And nothing.

just look at the additional options part when you make a reply...there is attach files and manage attachments button....and this is on the computer once you click manage attachments you can upload basically any file but some can be "to big" for the file type and wont upload but once you upload the pic press close window text and then submit your reply or preview it just to make sure it's there

I would do what I and others have suggested several times in extreme weird situations like this. Start back completely fresh:
Assuming you have a 16GB SPH-L710.
1. Backup everything you want to keep from your phone and internal storage to your SD card or computer.
2. Download the stock ND8 tar in the development thread (non-original). Extract the tar from the zip you download. Doubly check the MD5 hash of the tar to make sure what you downloaded matches what it's supposed to. You might need to run a search on that thread for MD5 to find it.
3. Download Odin v3.07 and the most recently available tar.md5 of Philz Touch Recovery.
4. Charge the phone full, turn off your phone and eject the SD card. Keep the SD card out for the rest of this.
5. Put your phone in Download mode: hold Home and Volume Down, and press and hold the power button at the same time until you see anything on the screen, then let go of all of them. It should say on the screen to press Volume Up "to continue". Do this.
6. Run Odin v3.07 on your Windows PC.
7. Plug the phone into the PC with a known good USB cable. After drivers load, Odin should show something like COM: 5, meaning it sees your phone.
8. Click PDA in Odin and direct it to the stock ND8 tar.
9. Uncheck Reboot in Odin.
10. Click Start. This'll take 5-10 minutes.
11. After done (Odin will say successful) unplug phone from cable and remove the phone battery to turn it off. Put the battery back in.
12. If you want to be able to root and make and restore backups, repeat steps 5 through 11 for the Philz Touch Recovery tar.md5.
13. If you want to root, boot into recovery (same as booting into Download mode but Volume Up instead of Down), click Advanced in Philz, and click the re-root option.
14. Before you do anything else with the phone including before putting the SD card in or installing apps, test the mobile data and GPS.
If any problems with mobile data, ##72786# in the stock TouchWiz dialer and then update PRL and Profile. That happens sometimes after Odining a stock tar or flashing a ROM.
If your problem is solved I would backup everything from your external SD card that's still removed and reformat it. That has solved some weird issues for myself and others, too.

I read a few other posts about terrible GPS, and it sounded like a bear to resolve. Never had a problem with GPS. Works perfectly (knock on wood). I went back through the posts and someone had mentioned that they fixed it by turning off Google location (in Google settings). They later turned Google location back on and (still) no longer had the problem...
Wondering if you had tried that?
