I think the Google Music widget may be the ugliest, most blah, widget in all of Android.
I have been looking around and there really are not any alternatives. It kind of surprises me since Google Music has been out for a while. The only choices I could find are a couple of themed ones but didn't look right on the Nexus, and I read that Phantom works, but I tried it and it does not like ICS.
Does anyone know if making something like below is possible? And would anyone want to take it on?

Yeah, I'm right there with ya. The Google Music widget is just plain butt-ugly AND it's also incredibly stupid with it having no back/reverse button on it. (I swear if I ever find out who started this trend of music widgets having no "back" button on them that I will b**** slap them into next week)!
But I digress...the iSyncr app that's available in the Android Market has transparent widgets and they work with the Google Music app. They're the only widgets I've been able to find that reliably work. (Only problem I've experienced is that they sometimes don't show the album art, depending on how the picture file is embedded into the MP3 file).
There are 3 widget sizes included: 1x4, 2x4 and 4x4. You can see a pic of the 4x4 widget at the below link:
http://www.jrtstudio.com/iSyncr/iSyncr_Ratings_FAQ
And here's a pic of the 4x2 widget from my own phone:
I got to speak with one of the Google Music devs a couple months ago and he said the biggest request they've gotten is for more widgets and features available via the widgets for the Google Music app, and they've got it on their schedule to work on this during Q1 of this year. So maybe if we're lucky we'll have some better native widgets for the Google Music app within the next 3 1/2 months.
i like the widget in the op

It was via Google +. It was totally out of the blue because I had posted about finding what I thought was a bug in the Google Music app lockscreen controls on the Galaxy Nexus and one of the Google Music devs responded and thanked me for noticing the bug and said they'd fix it in an update (which they did the very next month ), so I took the opportunity to also ask him about possible widget updates for Google Music. He was a really nice guy, so I'm hopeful they really will give us some new widgets.
So what does everyone think of this?
I like that how did you manage to do it?
I think it's supposed to be a Photoshopped proof-of-concept, not an actual app.

Yes, this is just a mock up I threw together. Is it possible to make?
@Dakota0206 - I like the look of your "mock up" widget too. Did you ever use the "Pure Music" widget? That's been my favorite 3rd party widget for music and I used it all the time in the past. But when Google switched over from the old stock Android Music app to Google Music they broke the functionality for the Pure Music widget, which really sucks. The dev for Pure Music says he can't update the widget to work with Google Music unless Google releases an API for it.
Pure Music is really nice though in terms of the number of widget sizes it offers and that it's skinnable! I would really love to see it work with the Google Music app! Sigh.
You could make a widget that would send forward, back, play, pause commands, but in order to display track information and album art I think you would need to modify the music app itself. As far as I know, Google hasn't released (and doesn't intend to release) the source for the version of the music app that integrates with their online services. So you are probably stuck with either a crappy widget but usable online services, or a better widget but no online stuff.
Interesting idea though. I downloaded the available music app source and am going to play around with it a bit. Will post if anything interesting comes of it.

Not the news I was hoping for, but makes since. Let me know if you anything works out with the app source.
I agree with you all about the music widget. What I don't get is the music widget on honeycomb is really nice imho, yet they resort to the ugly widget with ics.
But the bigger question...Katy Perry and Modanna...really?

Oh almost forgot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990014
Tons of transparent widgets. Stopped using them a while ago because you have to request and wait for them to update them after they get updated in the market but might have to use the music widget now.

Just the first album art I came across. I thought about it at first, but ended up deciding no matter what I chose someone would give flack lol. I almost didn't use actual album art, but thought it might not convey what I was going for without it.
Whoa...big news! That Pure Music Widget that I had mentioned earlier in this thread received an update (almost 2 weeks ago but I just found out about it tonight -- d'oh!) so that it now works with ICS/Google Music app! Woo hoo!
The dev notes that it can't show album art for music streaming from the cloud, so bear that in mind. I don't really care about that feature since I keep all the music I regularly listen to on my phone locally.
I am so incredibly psyched by this! haha I am really fed up with waiting for Google to push out some updated widgets for Google Music...and now I no longer have to.
FYI: the widget comes with sizes of: 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, 4x1, 4x2, 4x4, is skinnable (looks like there are currently 22 skins available for it), and has a setting that lets you adjust the desired transparency level.
Here's a link to it in the Android Market if you wanna check it out:

Last I heard, it doesn't work with the Google Music service, which makes it useless for anyone who doesn't have music stored on the phone.

I've been having issues with the stock News & Weather widget for a month or two.
I love the weather widget. There's nothing else styled like it, and I prefer the look of it over virtually every other weather app on the market.
Problem is, it won't update. When I setup the widget, it just says 'No weather information to display.' I click through the widget, and it says weather is unavailable for my location. So, I refresh it, sometimes once, sometimes a dozen times, and it finally loads the weather.
Not a big deal, if it was only when I rebooted my phone, or something like that... but it's every single time my weather refreshes.
Now, it's not just one phone. I have 2 Gnex's on AT&T, a Nexus S, and an AT&T-branded Galaxy S II. The stock weather widget does the same thing on all of them.
And, it's not just me, nor is it my location. I have a few friends with Android phones - one with AT&T in San Francisco, one with Verizon in NW Tennessee, one with Verizon in Indiana, and a few with T-Mo, Verizon and AT&T in NJ. Every single one of them is having the exact same problem.
This widget worked perfectly until, say, mid-November, and then it just broke. I hoped it was just my GSII, but I had the same problem when I got my GNex. Then I started asking people, and, well, here we are.
I can't believe there's nothing really out there. I've searched XDA, I've searched Google, and I'm just not finding anything significant, which I would think it would be, considering how many people I know who are having the problem.
So, is anyone on here having the same problem? I can't imagine no one at Google is seeing this problem, with the exposure I've seen personally.
And, for the record, location services are set to use Wifi, etc, on all phones. Configuration shouldn't be the issue, but I'd be more than happy to try anything someone may suggest.
I've also grabbed the supposedly-revamped geniewidget.apk from 4.0.4, and not only is it not really revamped, but it has the same issue.
Thanks!
Same problem on both my mytouch 4g slide, and my tansformer prime. For the last few days I can get no update even refreshing. Tried in multiplte cities both with wifi and cell.

You are not alone - I have two yakju stock-stock android phone with T-mobile USA and they both have the same problem.
BTW, don't be surprised - google ain't exactly known for its attention to detail, otherwise they would have made direct control access to the three color leds easier and less stressful on the battery.
settings>location services>google`s location service, gps sat, location & google search.

I've had them all checked on all of my devices and it makes no difference. Setting a static location makes no difference either (the problem still occurs). I don't believe it's a location retrieval issue, rather a data retrieval issue.
A while back the team that did was was soliciting feedback for widget improvements (post Nexus One launch) on the Google support forums, I don't suspect they are still doing that though seeing as how the forum is dead
Same here....on both GB CM7 and ICS 4.0.4 on different phones...lately it almost completely stopped working.
I remember this was an issues 1-2 years ago and google blamed weather.com for this.

I like the fact that its 2 in 1 weather and news.....
my favorite news widget also doesnt work .....the Scrollable News Widget : )
Been having this more and more. Now i can't even put in a zip code as it says can't find location.
i'm running CM9 on SGS2 but happened with all devices. Anyone ever look at a logcat to see where it's trying to get the data from?
Nexus S here, ICS 4.0.4.
Even before I updated to ICS, I've noticed this issue with the weather widget on a daily basis, but now that that I did update, sadly this problem is ongoing. But whereas before (Gingerbread), it updated if I pressed 'try again' a few times, now it's hopelessly not updating. Only thing that seems to work is if I clear the data though the apps and set it up again. Definitely broken. And just like some of you have noted on here (and other posters on other sites), All sync and location features are enabled. I don't have any custom codes running on this phone.
When it does work, I am faced with a secondary problem: I live in a border city (Windsor, Canada), with Detroit being right across from the river, and even though I have a custom location selected, it randomly displays "Detroit" - which annoys me to no end because clearly the custom location does work since it does display it correctly at times. I've tried postal code, I've tried "Windsor, ON, Canada" (which is what the server uses on The Weather Network website). If I switch to 'Use my location', it almost always shows Detroit, with the occasional Windsor showing up. Detroit weather and Windsor weather can be as different as night and day, so it does matter that I am shown the wrong location, for heaven's sake, it's not even the same country!
Anyways, first post on here, hope the feedback helps. Thanks.
I find the problem happens often as well, though it almost seems like for me it's directly related to if it can see a gps signal.
If I'm driving in my car - I tend to be able to get the weather.
If I'm inside at work, or overnight with the phone on the bedstand - no weather information.
Sometimes using GPSTest and clear/update AGPS, then going back to weather settings and refresh will do it... but not consistently enough for me to think they're related.
Question - do you guys have general Sync turned off? I notice that i'll try to sync 10 times and it'll fail but if I turn on Sync in settings it works on the first try.

My Genie widget is fine....I am not sure why you folks are having issues.
My Stock Nexus S weather Widget was fine (with occasional hiccup) until it was updated to ISC 4.0. Now since ISC4.0.3 and even after ISC 4.0.4 the weather widget will not update (yes I've tried all options to no avail!!!) unless I'll reset it and re-add the widget.
I bought other weather apps but none of them have something similar that I like (the next 24hr graph). If anyone has a solution it would be much appreciated. Google does not seem to care...
****ing Google, how hard is it to fix this stupid widget. Its been problematic since Nexus One !

I've enjoyed ICS on my Desire Z for the last 6 months. I came back to gingerbread a few days ago and realized that this is what the phone is best at. So being a fan of HTC's Sense UI I loaded a stock rooted rom - tun4f1sh, which as we all know has a lot of unused stuff. So I removed bloat and some widgets I don't use and also included wallpapers, sounds, ringtones from Sense 4 and enabled track pad wake. If you are a fan of sense and are not into overclocked kernels and framework mods and would like to use a stable rom, then give this a spin.

I think the idea of this ROM is fantastic. The widgets i use are the weather widgets, the flip clock widget and the calendar widget. Other than that, i wouldn't really care for losing any of the other ones as i'd remove them myself anyway.
Also, I know you like to theme the ROMs you make, so if you make this Sense based one, you should give people the option of either using the themes you make, or just using vanilla Sense 2.1.

For me none, I don't use the other htc themes actualy, have one from the thread you mentioned.
Surprisingly, HTC has released an OTA update for our phones. Sadly, it isn't ICS (that was to be expected), but it's 7mb in and it seems to bring fixes and optimisations.
On the Virtuous Sense 2.0 thread, user deveb had this to say about it. So it seems like it would be worth including that small update in this ROM if you do release it.
sorry was travelling a lot lately. I'll have to start over this rom soon. Will upload as soon as i'm done

IF YOU'VE FOUND THIS POST, OR ANY OF THESE APPS USEFUL, BE SURE TO HIT THE THANKS BUTTON!
If you know any unique or useful applications, games or widgets please suggest them in this thread so I can check them out. If I think they're good, I'll add them to the list.
*NOTE* - If you wish to know what the best app is regarding your needs, ask in this thread and I, or others, will be able to help you out.
So, if you want to know what the best music player is, ask here and I'll suggest the best ones available.
If there are any apps that you feel shouldn't be in this list, please let me know and suggest a better one. I can then test it and maybe add it to the list, in place of the other one.
If you don't suggest a better app, I won't change anything.
Must Have Apps for the GNex
Due to popular demand via PMs, I've decided to add a slot to this thread to display some of the best games we can get on our Android device.
As with the app list above, if there's a great game you'd like to be added to this list, let me know and I may well add it in
1. Pool Break Lite - If you like to play pool, snooker, billiards etc. on the go then this is a great app you. There are a few different variations to play in either single player or multiplayer online mode and even more variations if you buy the pro version.
2. FIFA 12 - This game speaks for itself. It's the latest mobile version of the FIFA franchise and is easily the best so far, with it showing vast improvements. There's a load of different cups and leagues to play through and with great graphics with no lag in the slightest.
3. World Series Of Poker - Probably the best game from EA (in my opinion). If you like to play poker I totally recommend this game. You can play Texas Holdem and Omaha in either cash games, tournaments or play for a WSOP bracelet as the main prize. Guest mode is now available for no login from Facebook is needed.
4. iAssociate2 - This is a good choice if you prefer a bit of a brain tester. iAssociate2 is a word association game you have to figure out which words and phrases are associated to each other. Sound easy? Give it a try and you can soon find out differently.
5. Need For Speed Most Wanted - Another brilliant addition to the EA family, Most Wanted finally brings one of the best racing experiences to Android. It's a brilliant game all round but the only thing it's lacking, in my opinion, is 'free roam' mode. But apart from that, it brings brilliant graphics and flawless gameplay.
6. Grand Theft Auto III - Grand Theft Auto III was a crime game which changed the future of gaming and is amazing to play on the go with our Androids. The full console game with great graphics, full features and surprisingly no lag considering it's such a huge game. Countless hours of gameplay, HD quality resolution and visually stunning graphics make this a must for our devices.
Must Have Apps for the GNex
The idea to add widgets into this thread aswell was an idea taken from Goku80 and I hope you lot like it.
So, the list in this post is strictly for widgets. I'll add some widgets myself as a base, but as always feel free to suggest some of your favorite widgets and they may make it into this list.
1. Beautiful Widgets - Beautiful set of Widgets containing clock widget, clock and weather widget, weather widgets, date widgets and toggle widgets with skins/themes support!
2. Fancy Widgets - Personalize your Android home screen with highly customizable clock widgets, weather widgets, home (clock & weather) widgets, forecast widgets, and more with lots of customization options.
3. Ultimate custom widget (UCCW) - If you enjoy customizing the look of your homescreen then this is pretty much a MUST HAVE app for you. It allows the user to create their own pure custom clocks with a near endless array of options to customize it how they'd like. However you want it, you can make it with UCCW.
4. Desktop VisualizeR - Here's another really useful widget if you love to customize your screens. This gives you the ability to make shortcuts and widgets with any image you specify, rather than just the default logos. You can also use this app to give apps a custom icon of your own, which is handy if your icon design doesn't currently exist.
5. Minimalistic Text - Minimalistic Text is a widget app that displays information in a minimalistic way. It can be configured to display time, date, battery and weather information. The layout of the widget is highly customizable throughout.
6. Eye In The Sky Weather - This is for all those who like their weather clean, simple and beautiful. The app includes 12 of the best weather icon sets and the ability to add your own icon sets.
I don't use not one of these apps and have no need to. Go figure. Thanks for sharing, though. I'm sure others will appreciate it.

Is there an app that can back up settings?...such as settings for notification/ringtone sounds, notification light settings.
I like to flash new ROMs and I don't want to have to change my settings all the time.

Only about half of them I truly use myself, but when I made this thread in the S2 forums quite a few people were suggesting particular apps, so I added them because of the interest in them.

Keep it on-topic guys. I'll be requesting thread maintenance remove comments that aren't relevant, as and when it's needed.
Also, don't simply say an app shouldn't be in the list. Give me an alternative and I'll look into it.
Thanks.

And you definitely don't need an anti-virus and anti-theft apps. You can get both in Lookout, but I only use it for the security features. Don't think I have ever run any kind of virus check.
I also think Chrome should be in there as a browser. Sorry if it was, just gave a quick look.

ive actually found Shush It to be extremely handy.
I would add a good launcher, such as Apex. I agree with removing anti virus apps as they are useless. Google Voice is indispensable, and I also like Touchpal Contacts for contact management. Just my two cents.

Hello,
I'm thinking of purchasing a Fire phone and have a few questions.
1. What's it like having no back & recent apps button?
2. Have you managed to install any launcher that makes it look like what Android normally looks like with working widgets and kitkat/lollipop notification bar?
3. Anyone tried Nova Launcher?
4. I read you can sideload google play without root, does that work properly?
I currently have a Moto G, I like it but at times I wish it was more responsive.
I don't take many pics but when I do I often wish they were a little clearer.
I'm looking for a phone that isn't too expensive and isn't too big (most phones seem to be getting huge).
Thanks
I wouldn't. For the price, any phone with android would be better.
Find one that you can unlock the bootloader and your in business.
IMHO.
I am happy with it and the specs are great... not any android is better. Just need to get used to ir... back button is not necesary as you swipe from the bottom of the screen up and the job is done. And the price is really good... i paid 99 pounds...

Have you tried any launchers to make it look more like normal Android?
It's a good looking, very fast smartphone that is hamstrung by the OS. Amazon will not unlock the bootloader and let folks root it. If these things don't bother you, and you're willing to try something new, then for $99 it is an incredible deal. Although the same great specs in a true android phone would be better at this price, such a thing doesn't exist: the specs to price ratio is tremendous.
Finally, although I use it as a second phone, I have grown to like some of the apps I'm stuck with. For example, I like the phone's email app as much as the gmail app. The feature's on the phone's email app work better for me across various email accounts.

I have had the unrooted unlocked 3.6.8 version for a few months now. I had no issues side loading any of the Google products to the phone. I did have install older android 4.2 versions of the 4 files and that worked on the AT&T version. Google Maps have the double texted which is annoying but i have been using either the chrome version or Here app for navigation. Weird thing i could be wrong but my Zillow app has a map feature that does not have that issue. Not sure if it using GMaps but I thought it did. Someone smarter than me might want to see what the Zillow app does differently. My home screen is the Google Launcher with Zooper Widgets. IT runs and fells like a normal android device. Not having a back but does cause issues with some apps that have their own back button. If you press the home button once it takes you to the main screen you set in the launcher just like normal Android devices. If you double tap the home button it opens the FireOS recent app/app killer menu which I like MUCH better then the Lolliop way. The camera is great it takes wonderfulphotos much better then my Nexus 4.

1. Actually, you can wipe from bottom to up to perform a BACK operation.
2. I tried google now launcher. No widget and no wallpaper.
3. Not yet..
4. Google play actually works for most of the apps. I'm trying to figure out how to back up photo to google photos, as google+ can't be installed.
I think fire phone has a great camera. And if you're a heavy amazon prime user , I mean things like instant video and prime music, maybe getting one is pretty good.

I dont regret getting it. My prime was up soon so at a hundred bucks i say its an awesome phone. I did use google now launcher for a couple weeks but then decided to give the amazon launcher a try and i'm still using it two months later. The swipe up to go back isnt perfect but you do get used to it. I have a pretty thick case on my phone so the only time i have a hard time is in landscape cuz my finger hits the case. For notifications I use heads-up and it works really well. You really just need it for for apps you load through google play. If you use facebook messenger you can use the bubble thing. I dont use it but i have. You just have to mess with the messenger app settings. As far as sideloading... what do you want to sideload? I gave the link of google plus that works so that fixes that... hangouts notifications is fixed by heads up cuz the regular notifications disappear in one sec. Maps doesnt work cuz of the text but nokia here works really well and i've come to really enjoy it and dont miss maps at all. Other than that everything I loaded through google play works very well... clash of clans, pebble watch app. youtube, drive, google play music, keep, gmail. The only app I havent had the opportunity to use is wallet but i did install it and it loads fine. Just not sure if the nfc side of it works. If anybody has info on that it would be appreciated.

Oh and the firefly app is awesome plus the amazon prime music app has gotten really really good. Maybe theres room for improvement but I love it now. You dont have to add each song to your library to listen. You can just search and play and there's a lot of music included and new stuff is added all the time.
Which widgets are you referring to that don't work with the Google launcher? My Zooper, Hangouts, CNN, and Google Music widgets work for me.

I just found two really good apps from Samsung that can be sideloaded to increase functionality and efficiniy of the Tab S4.
One is called Multistar, that makes both apps in a multiview setup active at the same time. Normally the inactive app is frozen and does not recieve new info untill its activated again. So you wont see incomming text chats in the inactive app. Same goes in DEX enviroment. With Multistar the apps will behave like in a windows enviroment, staying activte. They also included a floating notifiction bubble that can be set up to open the pointed app into a floating app mode. Really handy!
Secondly, is the Task Changer apk, this changes the layout of the recents view. Also adds more functions to setup multiview. Design wise it looks really nice, I think Iphones have the same layout? Anyways check em out in the links provided from APKmirror.com.

These are all available in the Galaxy App store in the Goodlock app and include a bunch more features such as a new lockscreen and notification tray themes.

Im using them both on my tablet. I also have the new Task Changer view on my S9 phone, but sadly cant use MultiStar on the phone yet. Android 8.1 requirement.
Anyways, no impact on battery what I have noticed.
As someone mentioned, this is a part of Samsung Good Lock, but Europeans dont get to install Good Lock from Galaxy Store yet. Only Asia and America has support for it.
cool. didn't even know what Good Lock was!

Made my night. The app pausing was one of the more annoying issues with multi window. Now my game is active and running in background as I type this. Like the task switcher too.
okay, this is a pretty amazing suite of apps. the multi-window is pretty much the best feature of DEX ... but without DEX running!
very cool. just opened a video in Netflix, plus Gmail (composing opens up another window, smart!), the Google app, Google Keep and a settings app ... piece of cake

1. open your apps.
2. in your Recents / Task Changer, drag an app into the center box (you'll see where, there's an outline), and then BOOM, that app is windowed -- and resizable!
3. go back into Recents / Task Changer, repeat for your other apps.
i haven't done it for more than five at a time, but i'm curious how many windows could be opened.
it's crazy why Samsung doesn't make a big deal about features like this and the notification customizations! SO MUCH potential here. this is not in DEX, it's not in a "desktop mode" like Huawei. and of course iOS can't.
this is genius stuff. i used to hate TouchWiz, but i'm digging Samsung Experience.
HEADS UP: LockStar doesn't work well the Tab S4. tried it, uinstalled it.
On my tab s4 it worked for one day. After that i reinstalled multistar and task changer. But the apps doesn't seem to work anymore please help. I have tried a reboot and reinstall them both. Even tried to install Goodlock 2018, but that didn't help either. I've got it working again with nova.
These are both great, thanks for sharing
There's no need to sideload, they're both avialable in the Galaxy Apps Store
And if you also install 'Good Lock 2018' (also avialable in the Galaxy App Store) it lets you customise the settings for 'MultiStar' and 'Task Changer'
Edit: Samsung should have just built these features into the rom

True, but GoodLock is not visible outside Korea and USA at the moment. So Europeans can not install it the proper way yet =)

Oh wow, that's strange that they would restrict them. maybe there's some kind of licence/patent issue in some countries.
They're avialable here in Australia =)
Otherwise you can find them on APKMirror or similar
