[TESTING][ROMS]Custom ROM Showdown! The Results Are In!!! Fastest???... - HTC Wildfire S

So I was seeing all these ROM's now that the world is unlocked for the WFS.
"This is the fastest ROM around!", etc, etc...
Talk is just that so we decided to have a little fun.
This is just a straight up 1/4 mile race lads and lassies!!!
I don't have much to say much about aesthetics, logical placement of things, or other details although I did spend some time on each ROM and was familiar with a few to begin with. Again. It's a drag race by the clock only!
I proposed and carried out the following:
-I intended to make the field level as the foundation of a house my good ol' man himself would build.
- The ROM's got tested out of the box. No additional flashing of this or that to improve this or that.
- I used the same Wildfire S GSM A510e, and CLEAN formatted Adata Class 10 16 GB SD card to perform both Antutu and Quadrant Standard benchmarks on all ROM's. Consistant SD r/w results are part of what makes a ROM smoke. Especially using DATA2SD, LINK2SD, A2SD, etc. This card was formatted in the following manner:
Partition 1 - Primary/Active FAT32 - 13.5 GB
Partition 2 - Primary - Ext2 - 1.0 GB
Partition 3 - Primary - Linux Swap - 512 MB
- I ran each test three times and choose the highest score in both the Antutu and Quadrant tests.
- No software was added to the ROM's by myself other than a file manager if I needed one to install Antutu and Quadrant Standard. [/I]
-This was a speed and performance test only and only within the confines of the testing platforms at hand.
-I clocked all ROM's at 806mHz/806mHz with performance governor and just let them run flat out.
-I tested all equally and didn't put one in just to be impartial, not that I stood a chance.
The ROMs and their Developers:

.sense 1.0 By benjamingwynn
A clean well thought out Sense based ROM with updates galore.
m1ndh4x8r EU GB 2.3.5 By m1ndh4x8r
The standard for HTC Sense based ROM's. A Story I don't need to retell.
TurboFire Beta 9 By DJPC
A stripped down drag racer. This ROM weighs in as the smallest of the HTC Sense based ROMs.
Unofficial CyanogenMod7.2.0 Port By Alquez
The standard for Non-Sense based ROMs. This is the smallest sized ROM in the field and it again doesn't need it's story told.
The Results:
HenseMod4 By Henry_01
.sense 1.0 By benjamingwynn
m1ndh4x8r EU GB 2.3.5 By m1ndh4x8r
TurboFire Beta 9 By DJPC
Unofficial CyanogenMod7.2.0 Port By Alquez
Not surprisingly the lightest weight ROM came out on top by a hair in the Antutu Benchmark and by quite a bit in the Quadrant Standard score.
Second going to m1ndh4x0r's ROM, the kernel of which was used in all the other HTC Sense based ROMs. I guess if it's your game you might as well be the best at it if only by a hair over Henry_01 and his third place HenseMod4.
The other three ROM's came in really really close and at the end of the day, aside from the standout Quadrant score by Alquez, the pack was tight right to the end.
Kudo's to our three newest developers BenjaminGwenn, Henry_01, and DJPC (who might I add doesn't even own a Wildfire S and developed his ROM using the eyes and ears, and logcat files of testers alone!).
That's it folks. I'm ROM'ed out, typed out and seeing triple from this.
The drag race is over for another year.
Hope you enjoyed yourself and will give all these ROM's a run for their money and pick which one is best for you. They all deserve a serious look.
PS If you are a developer or end user who liked the idea of me spending the time and resources to perform these tests please do click thanks!

Great idea mate.
I'm well looking forward to the results
Hope all the devs get involved.

It will be good to know how each rom performs

Contest entries extended until Sunday, January 22'nd at 11:59 pm GMT-5 (EST)!!!

Will the roms be tested at their stock clocks or will they be clocked to the same frequency?
I ask because i clock mine to 600MHz because some people have had issues with the often 800MHz default clock used in other roms

I am looking forward to see the results...
I am using latest m1ndh4x8r's Rom and I am quite satisfied, but I want to see how other roms perform, in compares with the one I use...
good idea mate... keep up...

Today is the day! Let's get ready to rumble!!!
Time to start testing some ROMs
Everyone else. Just sit back and watch the results!

Awesome!

The results are in!...
Come on up to the first post and see the results of this years ROM Drag Race!
Please don't forget to click thanks and also thanks for the developers who put in so much of their time and energy to come up with these ROM's!
Here it is...The results!!!

Read post #24
THIS POST IS JUNK. SEE POST #24 WITH MY CONCLUSIONS BASED ON A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE DATA.
Going by the Antutu total score results, there is no reason to chose one ROM over another based on performance. The standard deviation is +/-1%. But, looking at Antutu category-by-category is a different story. Here are the lowlights/highlights:
* HenseMod4 -20% in SD card write
* .sense 1.0 -13% & -14% respectively in Database IO & SD card write
* m1ndh4x8r is as average as could be in all categories
* TurboFire +16% in SD card write
* CM7 +13% in RAM and +18% in SD card write
So, the big story here is variation between the ROMs in SD card write speed. There is a cumulative ~35% improvement in SD card write speed to be gained with the non-Sense ROMs.
Quadrant shows significant variation from mean:
* HenseMod4 -13%
* .sense 1.0 -5%
* m1ndh4x8r -3%
* TurboFire -1%
* Cyanogen7 +23%!!!!!
Now I'm even more glad to be running CM7. Thanks, again d33ps1x and Alquez!

You know. I love waking up in the morning crying and wearing my wasted dragon costume and seeing something like this! (Follow another thread for inside joke)
Thanks. Great breakdown.

Damn, well done to the other devs on their roms. As a tip to those whose roms are suffing on sd card performance, the read ahead values make a huge difference to performance, but leave them as init.d scripts not init.rc as I have had some users reporting issues with higher values.
Looks like I need to get some more tweaks into the rom yet, unfortunately I ran out of time trying to get a wifi fix and could not get some last minute optimization in.

Post a picture of the dragon costume?

[Benchmark] CPU Performance across ROMs

This thread has the objective of testing the latest Hero's ROMs available, through CPU benchmarking.
To perform these tests the following applications have been used:
Linpack 1.1.2 - GreeneComputing benchmark application for CPU and Dalvik VM performance. Measured in MFLOPs. [link]
BenchmarkPI 1.11 - Application used for benchmarking CPU performance. The objective is to calculate the 1st n digits of PI. Measured by a timer. [link]
Benchmark 1.03 - Softweg's test suite for benchmarking. All tests, except the GPU one, done here to account for CPU, Memory and File System performance. Measured by an internal score. [link]
All the ROMs were clocked @ 691MHz "Performance Mode" under SetCPU [link], unless specifiied otherwise.
After each ROM installation, the 4 applications were installed, Airplane mode was turned on, the phone was rebooted 2 times, and I clocked the 3rd boot time.
5 dummy tests were made prior to the real 5 valid tests, per application, so the results would be clearer.
The higher the score, the better, except for BenchmarkPI, since it is a timed test.
Non-JIT and non-BFS kernels were used in these tests.
Also, I forgot to time the Official 2.1 Boot time, my bad. Feel free to do it.
This work was made as a complement to Arkymedes 3D/OpenGL benchmarks. See his thread [here].

Really?
From looking at those results I thought it was interesting to see there wasn't one clear cut better rom as they all seem to excel in different areas..
Although considering super hero is based off vr12 I was shocked to see sense adding 10 secs to the boot time....
As im running vr12 but using launcher pro and no sense widgets might aswell switch over...
Thanks for putting in the time to do this!
Very nicely done.
Nice work.
Only comment (take it as constructive criticism btw for next time, don't worry bout it), is that in the last graph, it's really pretty hard to see which bars are for each ROM. It may be my eyes, but I just felt it harder than the others. A little gap between each possible?
Nice work btw.
I was also interested to note that VR12 is 10 seconds longer to boot than SuperHero, despite both being based on very similar base ROMs, and made in the same way.

JIT is unstable and tends to lag the menus performance, though it increases the Linpack score. It may be seen has a ghost improvement, since you pratically don't have any advantage with JIT enabled.
I speak for myself. I prefer an overall fluid ROM than a JIT enabled one, that will FC every 10min and reboot every 30min.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I vote for this benchmark to be STICKY! Seriously good job and well worth reading.... Cheers m8!
I'd like to see results with and without JIT enabled.
It would be a good measure of the performance improvements/losses possible on different roms (sense/AOSP etc..), and maybe even throw in a "# of FC's with JIT enabled during benchmarks" graph to show how stable/unstable it is.
Also maybe a game/fraps type benchmark would be useful?
Nothing like tripling all the hard work you're doing

The same way the results are very similiar without JIT @ Linpack application, the same similarity would appear with JIT enabled.
About the # of FC's, I would need a lot more time than 30 / 40min per ROM (the amount of time I used in these sequence of tests), and that is time I simply don't have, for now. To test the # of FC's and restarts I would need something like 3 hours of intense use per ROM, opening a whole bunch of different apps, basically "wasting time" until something goes wrong.
About the game/fraps type benchmark, Arkymedes is doing something similar. Read again the first post. You will find the link to his post there.

I will try to fix the last graph. Since it is made in Google Docs and updated automatically, it doesn't have the amount of editing settings as in Microsoft Excel.
I had to repeat the VR12 boot for a 4th time, because it was taking 90+ seconds, already overclocked @ 691Mhz on boot. The 4th time was the best I got from all the other 3. Maybe if there was a 5th try, the results would be more similar. I will check it now, since VillainROM was the latest rom to test, and I hadn't flash any since yesterday. I will edit this post in 2min, just to boot it once more. BRB.
Edit: 73 Seconds... The 70 seconds boot was made with Airplane Mode on. This boot wasn't.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm very glad you guys are taking my "little" work so serious. It means a lot to me.
Also, the last graph was updated, and the differences between the ROMs are clearer now.
Thank you all, once again.
Great stuff, the boot times made me test Vanilla Eclair 4 and it rocks (UI was more responsive to me than ezHero 4.0)! I'd suggest to add (for the future) the amount of free RAM after rebooting with standardized autokill settings. Vanilla Eclair scored very very well here, better than other rom I have tested.. a shame I cannot get the HTC dialer in vanilla roms :-(
Awesome work I'm happy to see daguu roms score that high - maybe this will help flzyup gain some popularity because apparently his work is on par and sometimes better than most of other devs' work.

Fusion
Welcome to our latest creation, Virtuous Fusion. It is the first fully functional, properly scaled Sense 3.0 ROM for the G2/DZ. Before going any further, it is important to note that Fusion is a different product than base Virtuous. The "Fusion" ROM will exist until Sense 3.0 has natively become available on our devices, if ever. Virtuous proper will continue to be updated and maintained as it always has been, following official HTC releases.
Fusion was made possible by the amazing work of Flemmard and Diamondback, who reverse engineered the m10 format and built an encoder/decoder. The two of them also made the specific adjustments necessary to this particular ROM's applications. It was also a collaborative effort across the DHD and G2/DZ communities. Cappychimp and I worked closely throughout the entire process, with support from numerous others. Thank you to everyone involved.
Screenshots
Features
Fully functional and properly scaled Sense 3.0.
Based on components from Sniper911's leaks of Rider (1.27.1010.0), Kingdom (0.81.651.0) and DZ Sense GB 2.30.405.1.
All device hardware should be fully functional, including wifi, bluetooth, camera, camcorder, etc.
Kernel 2.6.35.10 from the Gingerbread leak for G2/DZ.
Market-sourced applications (Gmail, Maps, Voice, etc) automatically installed on first boot into /data/app for easy removal.
Deodexed (as leaked) and zipaligned.
Bloatware and unnecessary applications removed.
Massive APNS list.
Installation
You must be perm rooted with and Clockwork Recovery installed (i.e. s-off).
Perform a nandroid backup of your current ROM, in case you change your mind or encounter issues.
Apply the zip via Clockwork Recovery. It has not been tested with any other recovery.
Expect the first boot to take anywhere from 6-10 minutes. The lengthy first boot time is due to the dexopts process and installation of /data/apps. Subsequent reboots should be significantly quicker.
After initial install, allow a few minutes for all ROM-provided applications to appear. Some are installed post-boot using package manager.
Known Issues
There are some remaining graphical glitches. Most of them are minor but feel free to report them.
Landscape mode does not work for Rosie, even with the keyboard extended.
Non-HTC widgets function but are not scaled perfectly; they may appear small and offset to the left. HTC provides plenty of awesome widgets, so I suggest using those.
Credit and Acknowledgements
Thank you to the following people for their help putting this ROM together: Flemmard, Diamondback, Cappychimp, eViL D:, siulimagic, rafyvitto, 911Sniper and all the testers who subjected their devices to test builds in order to provide essential feedback.

Well done bro. I'm still working on my port though. I hate stealing work. Well. Major work. Like a ROM. Other things are cool. And if they're given to me. Thats cool.
Although if you could upload a simple Kingdom port without the other stuff... I keep getting boot loops on the splash screen. XD

Exactly what I'm looking for, plus a good overclocking GB kernel and there's nothing more I could ever ask.
You're amazing, RMK. Great job in advance.
P.S. I don't think landscape is coming soon, if my info is correct; DZ/G2 are the only holders of landscape rosie due to the keyboard and since HTC is bluffing on Sense 3 on our devices, there's pretty much no such thing as landscape Sense 3...other than the Flyer.
Thanks and congratulations are most fitting for such a great job done.
I will now dive into my bed, hoping to find rom uploaded.
Cheers!
I love the look of it so much, I almost hate you for the wait =p Good Job rmk for all of your hard work!
How's the launcher? Is it slow some times?

Porting Information and Credits
There has been an enormous amount of interest surrounding utilizing components or modifications from our ROMs. To this point, our policy was that any such work needed to explicitly be approved by the team. The fact of the matter is that the policy is simply not enforceable and any time consumed working to enforce it detracts from the time we have to work on Android (which is what we really enjoy). As such, we’ve decided to go in a different direction.
Going forward, ROM developers are welcome to utilize any portions of our ROM which are of interest.
Our only requirement is that you let us know about what you’re doing by sending an email to (devteam|at|virtuousrom.com), credit the Virtuous Team in your thread(s) and provide a link to our website. No response on our part is required whatsoever, we’re just interested to hear about how our work is helping you.
Our plan is to continue to innovate and push the envelop of ROM development; with the goal of staying enough ahead of the curve to merit a desire to clone our work.
hrk - Allowing use of ghostySMS Vision version.
cypis - For his awesome Unity-banner
robocik - Tips regarding APK compression.
capychimp - Tips with DHD audio optimization.
HTC/Google- For building such a good base system.
Important Notes
If you are experiencing random freezes and/or reboots, this is likely due to your device being incapable of handling our overclocking defaults. Download and apply this flashable patch, which will reduce the maximum CPU frequency to 1Ghz and likely eliminate this issue.
You must complete a full wipe prior to installing this ROM the first time. We also recommend wiping between upgrades, but you are welcome to try upgrading without a wipe. However, no support will be provided if you file a bug without having wiped prior to submission.

nah if you click restart, it just says the usual HTC message about clearing files out of memory.
I would just like to take this moment to thank all the wonderful Devs whom made this possible!
Let the flashing of awesomeness begin. lol
i bloody love this rom, managing to get 150mb free ram,no rosie resets, REALLY FAST and scoring 2289 on quadrant! thanks EVERYONE INVOLVED!
Wow......working great over here!
90 character sms bug fixed, calender and email widgets fixed and super fast.
Have'nt found any bugs yet. Nice job dev team!
Finally i can send/receive messages as long as i want, but i already see one weird thing: long messages are being sent as MMS (at least my phone says so). Is that true? That would be deal breaker for me, as i'm sending a lot of very long messages and that costs me nothing, BUT i will have to pay for if they are sent as MMS.
Other then that, ROM feels much smoother then any previous Sense 3.0 based ROM. Nice.
By some reason i can't add photo frame widget. Mail widget is a bit oversized IMO. By the way, what's wrong with video playback while holding phone in vertical position? Half of the screen is all in green color.
What kernel is included in this ROM?
Thanks for your hard work guys!
Amazing ROM. Thanks for your hard work!!!
Thanks a lot to virtous unity you guys are ****en awesome!

Welcome to the RCMix Energized edition ROM thread !
This development thread is for the official RCMix blue, energized custom firmware series for the HTC Desire Z !
I build my ROMs with four main goals.
Eye candy ( I want my ROM to look great and for it to all flow together nicely)
Speed !!!
Smoothness, consistency and good aesthetics
Stability through private beta testing before public release
I preconfigure a lot of things in my ROM, because when I flash it on my phone, I want it ready to go. So, the ringtone, sms/email and other notifications to already be set. Doing it this way, makes for a nice ROM that's ready out of the box.
ROM Features
Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread)
Rosie transparency... modded
Blue overscroll
Blue highlights instead of green
Deodexed, zipaligned, tweaked

Updated hosts file for ad removal

FAQ Coming Soon!
You gotta have a DZ Hboot in order to be able to run Sense 3.X ROMs...here you go for a good guide to migrate to DZ Hboot, just disregard adb commands if you can boot-up recovery manually (hold "volume down + power" and then choose "recovery" from the bootloader options) and copy the file to sdcard through usb-toggle or place the file to sdcard through cardreader and then insert sdcard into the phone and boot-up bootloader.

What? Desire HD is mentioned numerous times, and Inspire 4g shares rom compatibility, so please do your homework before leaving comments.

Anyone remember the command lines to make contact pics come back after fixing permissions? I had it saved somewhere, and cant seem to find it. Searching is not finding the correct command line. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks St Louie for the quick response. I appreciate it. I know it was in the wrong area, but was hoping for a quick resolution to my wife's dilemma.
Hopefully with T-Mobiles 3 devices getting ICS updates we might see some of the stuff released get a complete build, it's hard making the transition to ICS with features not working that people actually need and use.
I have tried a few releases but there is still too much that needs work before it's a daily driver for myself.
Thanks for keeping up with it though.

Once the Desire HD gets ICS, a LOT of these bugs will be fixed. But until then, this is the way things are. If I could fix it, I would do it in an instant. But I can't. Maybe it will be like getting the AOSP camera to work - having people work together instead of arguing.

That would be great but unfortunately people are people. It would be nice to see everyone put away their differences in order to provide the community what our carriers refuse to for the sake of development but it always comes back down to who is better than the next.
Instead we'll hope that luck provides us with what we need.

Let me ask? Does Voice actions work? I see in the change log where it says Microphone in app work is the the same thing? Every other Sense rom it did not work.
I really wish i was better with the behind the scenes stuff, i would LOVE to help get the camera working in an ICS Sense rom...i hate to say it, but AOSP and AOKP ICS hasn't fully grown on me, though i have been eatin poptarts and ****tin rainbows for a couple days now lol

Not sure. From what I can tell, phone calls work. Other microphone apps don't. I remember getting them to work, just I do not know how I did it. I'll look into it.

Just to be clear, Voice to text does not work? Such as Google search or mess apps etc.?
